Subj: Headaches and purple dots under the skin
Date: 5/3/2011
I have been using phentermine for just under a week now. I have lost 8 pounds so far. I have been experiencing headaches ever since I began the medicine. It really works to supress my hunger, but I am worried because I just noticed little purple dots under my skin on the right leg. I don’t know if it’s related or not, but I will bring this up to my doctor as it as my slightly concerned after reading about the causes of this on the internet. I really hope it’s nothing serious.

Subj: Noticeable hair loss
Date: 5/5/2011
I have been taking Phentermine for month and have noticed a significant change in my hair. It is thinning (very noticeable in the temple area) as I’ve always had thin hair in that area. I usually keep my hair in a pony tail so I notice it big time!! Also the texture has changed to a frizzy texture.

Subj: Can you take Phentermine and aspirin?
Date: 5/13/2011
Hello, I had (Thrombosis) blood clot in artery of brain 4 years ago. I was very lucky for this to go away with Dr. prescribed medication. I recently had another MRI (due to headaches) to make sure it hasn’t come back & it has not. The headaches are caused by stress. I really want to lose weight & wanted to know if it would be safe for me to take Phentermine? And if so, is it safe to take it with the lowest dosage aspirin daily? Please advise at your earliest convenience. Thank you
Lori

Subj: Taking phentermine 30mg
Date: 5/16/2011
I have been taking phentermine 30mg once a day for 10 days now. For the first 5 days I ate whatever I wanted while I adjusted to the drug in my system. I then began to pick more healthy choices and On day seven I started exercising and signed up with Weight Watchers NEW Points Plus Program with E-tools.
It is now 10 days into Phen, Diet and Exercise that I can actually say I am loosing interest in FOOD. I can NOT eat large portions of ANYTHING. I am thirsty all the time (side affect)so I drink a lot of water. I also take multi-vitamins daily. I noticed when I had a cup of coffee that my appetite was even more diminished (only tried it 3 times). I have mixed feelings while on it. I still get tired enough to close my eyes during the day if I am sitting still and relaxed, but I also feel in my head the urge to get up and move around if I am just sitting(not relaxed). I sleep very well at night too. But sometimes awake feeling tired for at least 10-15 minutes (like I could go back to sleep). So I usually drink 8-16oz water and get moving around when I wake, take the Phen, 30 min. later I Eat fruit, do some zumba dance (on Xbox) or march in place with 3lb weights for 15-20min., before I eat breakfast.
In ten days I have lost 6 pounds (probably because I didn’t have a diet routine right away). I have a BP machine at home to keep track of my Blood Pressure. I have 19 more days on the Phen before I STOP. Not sure how to STOP though??? Will have to consult with my Doctor on that. Will check back in on my TOTAL weight LOSS and how I felt once I STOPPED taking Phentermine.
Charlene
AskDocWeb: Welcome to the forum Charlene. You may find it helpful to remember that “Total weight loss” is only one way to measure progress. When losing weight some changes do not show up on the scale. For example fat is likely to melt off of a few key places on the body first, like the stomach, thighs, buttocks, waist and arms. Taking measurements can help reassure you that things are happening–even if it doesn’t show on your scale. It is possible to lose zero pounds and still drop two pant sizes.
Subj: 10 day master cleanse
Date: 5/17/2011
I have been on it now for 4 months lost 25lbs.. I have had extreme short term memory loss. I will be driving to go somewhere and completly forget where i was going. Before phentermine everyone used me for my great memory now everyone is worried about me. I also have depression and rage. I need to get off of this crap! I feel horrible but i am scared to gain the weight back.. I do the 10 day master cleanse every year would i be fine to go off of it slowly during the cleanse? I think this would detox my body of it??

AskDocWeb: We are not familiar with the 10 day master cleanse so talk to your doctor about how you should go about stopping this medication.
Subj: 2 major issues: hair loss and addiction
Date: 5/18/2011
I have been taking phentermine for about 6months, only lost about 28lbs, but my major 2 issues are hair loss and addiction to this pill. My hair was down my back, now I can barely make a ponytail, never ever had problems with my hair. People see me and ask if I got a hair cut, but I didn’t, my hair is breaking off, falling out. Anyway, I tried to stop, and I went through deep depression. I was off the pill for 3 days, could not function and lost a since of confidence. I read the comments about hair, but I really think doctors need to look at it, this is a side effect, just google and read all the reviews on hair loss, what a mess. I can’t even get off this.

Subj: I just keep getting hungry
Date: 5/19/2011
I have been taking phentermine and adipex or 3 months now. The first month, I lost around 14 pounds. The 2nd month, I love 10. Now, the 3rd month….I love 3 more pounds for a total of 27, but I keep on losing and gaining the same 3 pounds. I find myself hungrier…even thought I stopped taking it for a few days to get it out of my system and started it back up again. I just keep getting hungry. So, I changed my dosage. The hunger pangs are gone…But my weight is creeping up. I feel absolutely bloated. What’s going on???? Is this the end of the road for me?
Shanetta
AskDocWeb: It is not the end of the road for you but it might be for the drug. As many have noted, the body eventually develops a tolerance to Phentermine. As the tolerance builds the drug becomes less effective. This is one of the reasons why diet drugs are usually only prescribed short-term. When this happens it is time to check back with your doctor to assess your options.
Subj: Phentermine makes me sick
Date: 5/19/2011
I have been taking phentermine for 3 days, it makes me extremly sick. I take 1 in the morning an hour before breakfast, it makes me nauseous, and dizzy all day long… What to do?
Man
AskDocWeb: Some upset stomach has been reported in the first few days of using Phentermine but dizziness is listed as a side effect that should be reported to your doctor.
Subj: Can I double up on Phentermine?
Date: 5/22/2011
Can you double up on phentermine? I don’t have the same feeling with it as I did when I first started.
Shanna
AskDocWeb: Remember that Phentermine is a central nervous system stimulant and makes your heart work harder. You really want to avoid overworking your heart so NEVER double up on a dose.
Subj: Hallucinating, light headed, and chest pains
Date: 5/25/2011
Hi, I’m 21 years old. I started using Phentermine about 4-5 months ago, because I was having a hard time losing the baby weight. My doctor started me on 30mg a day. Everything was great, losing weight and no side effects for the first 3 months. The 4th month only lost 5lbs, went back for the 5th month had only lost 2lbs, I couldn’t feel the pill working anymore. They doubled my dose, 30mg 2x a day! Its been about 3 weeks and I can’t sleep, I had a night where I was hallucinating while in bed and couldn’t sleep, I have been getting lightheaded real easy and now I’m having trouble breathing and a few occasional pains in the chest. Once the shortness of breath started I started researching and putting all these together. I have stopped the pill as the breathing problems started this week, but today has been horrible, its like I need to take a deep breath, but my lungs can’t take in the air, I’m extremely worried now after researching this. I’m calling my doctor tomorrow ASAP, but I’m worried.

AskDocWeb: Several of your symptoms are legitimate causes for concern. Hallucinations are listed as one of the possible side effects of Phentermine that may require emergency medical care. Any difficulty breathing should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible.
Subj: Phentermine and Prozac
Date: 5/26/2011
I am taking 37.5mg of Phentermine and 20mg of Prozac. I have been taking them for a lil over a week. What are the risks of taking these meds together.
Rita
AskDocWeb: There is a possible major drug interaction when Phentermine is used by someone taking Prozac. Although the exact mechanism of interaction is unclear, there are reports of jitteriness, racing thoughts, stomach cramps, dry eyes, palpitations, tremors, and restlessness following a single dose of phentermine. This has occurred even a week after discontinuing Prozac (fluoxetine).
Diet drugs such as Phentermine are generally not administered with serotonin reuptake inhibitors because of the additive risk of serotonin syndrome.
The symptoms of the serotonin syndrome include:
- mental status changes such as irritability, altered consciousness, hallucinations, confusion, coma
- autonomic dysfunctions such as tachycardia, hyperthermia, sweating, shivering, blood pressure lability, pupil dialation
- neuromuscular abnormalities such as, hyperreflexia, muscle spasms, tremor, rigidity, inability to coordinate voluntary muscle movements
- gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
Serotonin syndrome is a rare but serious and potentially fatal condition thought to result from overstimulation of brainstem 5-HT1A and 2A receptors.
