Subj: I am confused
Date: 9/4/2011
Regarding phentermine 37.5 taken along with ambiem to sleep i have read many different stories from one person taking 4 phentermine an 6 ambiem a day an was fine. I am confused. Please explain.

Debbie

AskDocWeb: Over time people who abuse drugs often build up a tolerance for those drugs and use them in ever-increasing doses. Because of their tolerance they may use amounts that would be dangerous or lethal for the average healthy person. When you read posts from those using more than the prescribed amounts you need to keep in mind that those posts are from drug abusers. In our opinion you need to be very careful when considering the advice from someone who is abusing drugs.

Subj: Is this weird?
Date: 9/8/2011
I used phentermine for 6 months from March 2010- Sept 2010 In that time I lost about 38lbs! I was soooo excited and felt awesome!! ….After stopping I felt very tired, actually thought I may be pregnant. Went to the Doctor and they ran multiple tests and said I actually had Hypothyroid and prescribed me levothyroxine. (Not sure if Phentermine caused this?)

I started gaining weight again and got very very frustrated…I started Phentermine again this year from Feb-March 2011 but didn’t feel the same boost of energy as the first time, So I went off it for a month then tried it again may-july and lost 10 lbs. Still don’t feel like it is as potent as it used to be. Is this weird? Is this something to do with my thyroid? I currently take: Sublingual B-12 tablet 5000mcg every morning, levothyroxine 50mcg, yaz pill, phentermine. Just wondering if my thyroid is lessening the affects of phentermine? Thanks!

Devon

AskDocWeb: It may seem weird but it is normal for the body to build up a tolerance for this drug. That means that over time it becomes less effective. Sometimes taking a break from use will bring back some of that effectiveness but typically it is never as effective as it was the first time that it was used.

Subj: Liver problems?
Date: 9/12/2011
Can phentermine cause you a liver problem?

Elizabeth

AskDocWeb: The only notes we have about liver problems while using Phentermine relate to elevated liver enzymes. Some patients have discontinued the drug because of that. The early signs of liver damage are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual fatigue, loss of appetite, yellow skin or eyes, itching, dark urine, or clay colored stools. If you have these symptoms, you should notify your doctor immediately.

Subj: Not feeling that “hyped up” feeling
Date: 9/14/2011
My daughter began taking peentermine 37.5mg and has been very successful. She says she feels a “hyped” up feeling when she takes it in the morning. However I have just began taking the same mg 37.5 and do NOT feel that hyped up feeling she does. I only know I’m taking it because my appetite has decreased, and am having some insomnia. (been up 24 hrs as I type this). My question is should I be feeling that hyped up feeling or is it just our bodies reacting differently? Also is there anything I can do to help with this insomnia? Thanks,

Sady

AskDocWeb: Not everyone gets that “hyped up” feeling and it goes away once the body becomes adjusted to the medication. However, if you are experiencing insomnia that may also be a result of feeling stimulated, and that too may go away with continued use. Remember that taking a dose too late in the day is known to cause insomnia.

Subj: Phentermine does affect birthcontrol
Date: 9/15/2011
I have been on the DEPO shot for 9 years and the only time I have ever had a period is when my shot is due. “AskDocWeb” don’t get on here and say with DEPO cycles could be irregular and that normal blablabla…. I have purposely gotten off Phentermine to see that my cycle goes right back to its norm of only coming when my shot is due but when I am taking Phentermine I having a continous period/spotting, everyday. Phentermine does effect your birthcontrol. Ladies, I know this is the issue with me. I have gotten off the Phentermine multiple times and my cycle goes right back to normal but “everytime” I start taking Phentermine my period becomes constant. Don’t listen to what docs are telling you. Listen to your body and your instinct. To avoid getting pregnant I would not rely on birthcontrol while taking Phentermine. Phentermine does affect your birthcontrol.

America

AskDocWeb: You have our apology. We did mean to imply that the Depo shot was the “only” explanation for a period that lasts two weeks. However, that is a problem for a number of women. And yes, Phentermine has been reported to cause the following changes in the menstrual cycle:

  • spotting
  • missed periods
  • early periods
  • having two periods within four weeks
  • late periods (up to 10 days late)
  • Some women describe it as messed up

There is no evidence to suggest that the use of Phentermine might alter the effectiveness of birth control pills in preventing pregnancy. However, there are some drugs that can make birth control pills less effective, which may result in pregnancy. Using Ortho Tri-Cyclen as an example, here are the drugs, and one herb, that reduce the effectiveness of this birth control pill:

  • bosentan (Tracleer)
  • certain antibiotics (Rifampin and possibly others)
  • HIV or AIDS medications
  • phenobarbital (Solfoton) and other barbiturates
  • anticonvulsants (seizure medication) such as carbamazepine, phenytoin and others
  • herb: St. John’s Wort

You may need to use additional contraception when you take any of the above drugs or St. John’s Wort.

Subj: Urine test
Date: 9/16/2011
Question would Phentermine Hydrochloride 37.5 show up positive on a urine test even thow it is a appitie supressing pill.

Nissy

AskDocWeb: Unfortunately that is a possibility. Phentermine has been reported to show up as a false positive for amphetamines and ecstasy on urine tests (See reference 3. We recommend that anyone who is subject to drug testing be able to provide evidence that the medication they are taking is legitimately prescribed by a doctor and has been obtained through appropriate channels.

Subj: Kinda paranoid
Date: 9/19/2011
I have been taking phentermine for almost a week now. the past two days i have gotten kinda paranoid, but i am able to control it. i get freaked out that my throat is closing up or that my heart is going to stop.. this is only after i read that some people have died from this medication, is it possible for this to happen? would i have more side effects or warnings if this was going to happen? and is it ok for me to work out every day. i get freaked out my heart will stop. Thank you for your time.

Stephanie

AskDocWeb: We have searched extensively and cannot find one instance of a death that was caused by using phentermine solely as directed. The reports of death that you read on the Internet all seem to be the result of combining Phentermine with other drugs or overdosing. Phentermine has been on the market for over 40 years and your doctor would not prescribe it unless he or she thinks that the known benefits outweigh the possible risks. To avoid problems get your doctor’s approval on any work out program you are considering.

Subj: What the heck am I doing wrong?
Date: 9/24/2011
I’ve been taking Phentermine for over a week and I’m still hungry. My appetite hasn’t been suppressed at all and I haven’t lost a single pound. What the heck am I doing wrong??

Sarah

AskDocWeb: If you have made the required lifestyle changes to your diet and activity level and are still not losing weight then check back with your doctor. It is possible that your dosage might need to be adjusted.

Subj: What can I take?
Date: 9/26/2011
I am taking Phentermine for weight loss. I have gotten a cold or bad sinus. What can I take that will not enter act with this medicine?

Carla

AskDocWeb: Many of the medications used to treat cold and sinus problems have moderate to serious drug interactions with Phentermine. If your have a specific product in mind you can check it against this list for possible interactions. However, you will have to talk to your doctor to find out what would be safe for your particular situation.

Subj: Buzzy feeling, insomnia, excess sweating and high blood pressure
Date: 10/7/2011
Hi All! I started phen three days ago, first day I took the 37.5 once and felt a buzzy feeling but wasn’t hungry, had insomnia that night, next day I decreased to just half a pill once a day, no buzzy feeling and was able to sleep. However, today I went back to 37.5, I felt fine until this evening when I went out for a walk, normal pace and I started sweating like crazy (it was about 75, cloudy, with a steady breeze) and when I went to take my bp it was 155/94, it has since decreased to 151/94 but I have never had high bp (usually around 120/80). I know it elevates bp but is this normal? Will my bp go down after a week or so to something closer to the normal range or no? This is the first time I have had this side effect in two days, however other than the HP I had no other signs of “hypertension”. Help!

Piper

AskDocWeb: Phentermine is known to elevate blood pressure, which is why some patients with hypertension cannot use this medication. Your BP reading of 151/94 is in the range of Stage 1 Hypertension so please discuss this with your doctor. If there are any other health issues present such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease or other conditions this can be a very serious complication.
