Subj: Hysterectomy
Date: 10/8/2011
How long after a hysterectomy can I start taking the phentermine? I have not been on any pain medications at all since I got home. That was almost 3 weeks ago.
Kara
AskDocWeb: There doesn’t seem to be a set time because individual circumstances vary too much. You will have to check with your doctor to find out.
Subj: Lack of appetite
Date: 10/16/2011
Hi, I’m 18 and weigh 240 lbs. I have been taking phentermine for a week and 4 days. At my one week check up I had already lost 9 lbs! The first day the pill pretty much gave me a sense of euphoria and ecstasy, but in the days after I haven’t even noticed the pill. While ecstatic about my weight loss I know it is because I have no desire to eat. I go a whole day without eating sometimes. I know this is not healthy and would prefer not to but the pill makes everything sound and smell horrible! Will I ever get a little bit of an appetite back? I never thought I would be asking this! Lol! Thanks!
Ashley
AskDocWeb: You may have heard that wise old saying, “Never shop for groceries when you are hungry.” Not having an appetite can allow you to make wiser choices when choosing what to eat and how much. You can base your decisions on nutrition rather hunger or cravings. Phentermine may suppress your appetite temporarily but it will return when you stop taking the medication.

AskDocWeb: Hi Jeannie. Keep in mind that this is well worth the effort so keep us posted. Good luck!
Subj: Headaches, anxious, and fast heartbeat
Date: 10/17/2011
I’ve been taking phentermine for a little over a week and since I started I’ve had headaches almost everyday, I’ve felt anxious, my heart was beating fast, I felt like I had to take small breaths, I felt light headed and I have vaginal bleeding(not menstruation). Could the phentermine be causing all of these?
Elizabeth
AskDocWeb: Yes, those symptoms are listed as possible side effects of Phentermine that should be reported to your doctor.
Subj: Sore throat
Date: 10/18/2011
Hi, I have used phentmerine 2 yrs ago but I noticed that I developed sore throat with it so I stopped. I have been taking it again for like 3 days now and now i’m having sore throat. I don’t see sore throat as one of it’s side effect. My doc also said it’s not one of the side effects. I would like a second opinion pls. Thanks.
Tohlar
AskDocWeb: Although a sore throat is not listed as one of the possible side effects of Phentermine, a few patients have reported that symptom. If it continues or becomes too bothersome you may want to check with an ear, nose and throat specialist.
Subject: Horrible taste on my tongue
Date: 10/22/2011
I have been taking Phetermine for weight loss for about three weeks but stopped about 2 days ago because I have this horrible taste in the back of my tongue. I can’t even drink water without getting this taste. I was wondering how long it will take to get my normal taste back or is this a permanent side effect? Thank you for your help.
Mrs.
AskDocWeb: Unless you are getting chemotherapy or a bone marrow transplant the change to your sense of taste not likely to be permanent but there is no way to tell how long it will last. Although Phentermine is not listed as one of the Drugs that Change Taste it may be a rare side effect. Some diets require supplementation with vitamin B-12, the lack of which can cause changes in taste, smell, and vision. You might want to ask your doctor about that. Also TheraBreath has an ebook about the cause of changes in taste (and the resulting bad breath) that might be helpful. You can get a free copy here.
Subject: Anal issues, pain, hemorrhoids and anal fissures
Date: 10/24/2011
Hi, I’ve been using Phentermine off and on for over 6 years. The product worked for me to suppress my appetite and lose weight, however, the side effect was very excruciating!! to say the lease. I have experienced very PAINFUL anal discomfort, hemorrhoids and anal fissures. At times the pain was so severe that I had to go to the ER. This would happen even if I was NOT making a BM. The symptoms would begin approximately an hour after consuming the pills. I spoke to my Dr. about it and he said he has never encountered anyone with that symptom or complaint. I recently had colonoscopy done just to make sure everything was ok..and it was.
To date I’ve lost approximately 100lbs. that was in the first 8 months, I’ve kept it off for 5yrs..Went from a size 13/14 to a size 3-4 however, recently gained 30lbs back and now wearing a size 7-9..I was considering having hemorrhoidal surgery and begin taking the pills again. Other than anal issues the pills worked for me. Too bad the pain was unbearable. Has anyone else experienced the same symptom? Thanks,
Barbie
Subject: Back pain
Date: 10/26/2011
I have been taking phentermine 37.5 mg for about 3 to 4 years now off and on; I had some miscarriages and had trouble losing weight after. Doctor put on Phentermine and HCG shots also Lipo B and vitamin B-12 each time after the miscarriages. I have been very successful losing weight each time I was placed on a diet along with the pills and shots. My question is…This time around my lower back mid way down on the left hand side hurts if I don’t drink enough water or if I drink coffee first and then water. The pain is not strong but it is disconfirming. What is going on with me?
Anna
AskDocWeb: Although it is not listed among the officially recognized side effects, there is a growing number of people who have reported back pain when taking Phentermine. It may turn out to be a rare side effect but that is just speculation so far.
Subject: Hair loss scared the heck out of me
Date: 10/27/2011
Date: 10/26/2011 I have used Phenteramine on and off for several years. I found that once I get off of it, I gain a lot of weigh and quickly. Although I had never noticed it to this extent before, I am now experiencing a tremendous amount of hairloss which has scared the heck out of me. Gobs and Gobs fall out daily. My hair is now tin and brittle. Here is some interesting facts of what I experienced while I was on Phernteramine.
-If I eat something with Aspartame or if I take Splenda I will notice an increased, unwanted sex drive. I’ve had to relieve myself many many times so that the feeling would go away, and it still would not go away.
-If I take any caffeine with the phenteramine I also have side affects and will not be able to sleep at all.
-In both instances, I will get light headaches and it will put me in a state of confusion all day until it wears off.
-I also get headaches and feel sideeffects if I do not take any water with the medication. It is absolutely necessary to take lots of water throughout the day. I feel the med alone in your body makes you more prone to side effects.
-When I first started taking the medicine many years ago, I first noticed dry-eye and dry mouth which are common side effects. I sometimes also suffered from exzema in the scalp and now that I think about it, increased stress levels. -Finally most important, I notice that when I take Splenda or Aspartame, I get really really depressed when this mixes with the Phenteramine. The depression gets so bad that this is the last draw and I have to get off of the medication.
I like losing weight, but the depression really hurts me and I find myself having cryins spells. So why do I continue taking the medications after all of these side effects? I so desperately want to lose weight. I pray to God that I can get off and stay off at this point and lose weight some other way.

Subject: Constipation
Date: 10/29/2011
I have been taking phen for 2 1/2 wks have lost 10lbs but I have the worst constipation! I have to literally take something to make myself go and it is still hard. I eat a alot of salads veggies and fruits. I also get dizzy and a little light headed. Sometimes I feel hot and start sweating. Not going to the bathroom is my biggest issue Should I be concerned?
Moni
AskDocWeb: Constipation is listed as one of the possible side effects of Phentermine that should be reported to your doctor. Of course a stool softener may help relieve constipation but it does not address the cause. Are you drinking lots of water? That seems to help many. Other things that are helpful when dealing with constipation are adding fiber to the diet, pears, bael fruit, oranges, papaya, figs, prunes, and Guava (eaten with seeds).
Subject: Swollen ankles and feet
Date: 10/29/2011
I just started phentermine 4 days ago and I just noticed today that my ankles and feet are swollen, does it usually happen that quickly? I’m really worried because everything I’m reading online says that swelling is a severe symptom and that I should contact my doctor immediately. Please advise. Why are swollen ankles/feet/toes a severe symptom?
Nicole
AskDocWeb: Medical advice should always come from your personal physician. This forum is for discussing the side effects of Phentermine. The reason why swelling is listed as one of the possible side effects of Phentermine that should be reported to your doctor is that it may be an indication of one of 3 very serious conditions: congestive heart failure, deep vein thrombosis, or venous insufficiency.
Congestive heart failure is a direct result of the body retaining fluid, which builds up in the vascular spaces, as well as the heart and lungs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart failure is a serious condition that causes weight gain with marked swelling in the in the legs and ankles, causing generalized fatigue and weakness.
Deep vein thrombosis, also known as thrombophlebitis, typically causes sudden swelling of the lower leg accompanied by pain and tenderness behind the knee and calf. According to the CDC, deep vein thrombosis may cause the leg to appear dusky in color due to compromised circulation and often indicates a serious condition that can cause disability and even death.
Venous insufficiency, also known as varicose veins occurs when the venous wall or valves in the leg veins fail to work properly. This condition allows the blood to pool in the legs, which causes swelling, and results in poor blood return to the heart. According to the Cleveland Clinic, venous insufficiency often occurs from blood clots in the legs known as deep vein thrombosis. Symptoms become noticeable after a long period of standing, causing an aching heaviness in the legs.
