Combination drug interaction?
Date: 2/1/2012
I just started taking phentermine and tenuate, I also take celexa 40mg, and impiamine 10mg, I cannot find a cite that talks about this combination of drug interactions. Concerned!
Jill
AskDocWeb: Please check the spelling of “impiamine” as that spelling is not in our database.
There are at least 2 possible major drug interactions with the meds you list. Phentermine and Celexa (citalopram) are generally not prescribed together because of possible toxic reactions and/or serotonin syndrome, which is a rare but serious and potentially fatal condition believed to result from hyper-stimulation of brainstem receptors.
The symptoms of the serotonin syndrome may include mental status changes such as:
- irritability
- altered consciousness
- confusion
- hallucinations
- coma
Autonomic dysfunction such as:
- tachycardia (abnormally rapid heartbeat (over 100 beats per minute))
- hyperthermia (abnormally high body temperature)
- diaphoresis (sweating)
- shivering
- blood pressure lability
- mydriasis (pupil dilation )
Neuromuscular abnormalities such as:
- hyperreflexia
- myoclonus (spasm of a muscle or muscle group)
- tremor
- rigidity
- ataxia (inability to coordinate voluntary muscle movements; unsteady movements and staggering gait)
Gastrointestinal symptoms such as:
- abdominal cramping
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
The above warning also applies to using Tenuate (diethylpropion) with Celexa (citalopram). It is very important to tell your doctor about all of your current medications before getting a new prescription.
Phentermine and tinnitus
Date: 2/1/2012
In response to the question on whether or not Phentermine can cause tinnitus: I have taken this drug twice, and both times I have had ringing in my ears the entire time I was taking it. Other side effects are a metallic taste in my mouth, small headache, and slightly blurred vision. These side effects are inconvenient, but tollerable, however; Phentermine worked both times I have taken it. I lost 85 pound the first time, and I am back on it two years later to lose the rest of the weight (a target of 40 pounds).

Breathing difficulty and dizzy
Date: 2/9/2012
High, when I started I was 136 pounds and 5’6″. I wanted to drop 21 pounds and fast so started taking 30mg. I dropped to 126 in one week. However, I had to stop because I had a feeling of not being able to breath and very dizzy. It was bad enough I couldnt even walk from the couch to the bathroom because I couldnt breath. I was wondering if I took 15mg once a day if that would still help me lose weight but not have as bad of side effects?
Chelsea
AskDocWeb: Both breathing difficulty and dizziness are listed as possible side effects that should be reported to your doctor. Your doctor can advise you if a lower dosage might be effective enough to continue use or if an alternative might work better.
High pitched ringing in ear
Date: 2/10/2012
I started taking 37.5 mg Phentermine pills to loose weight about six weeks ago. About 4 weeks ago, I noticed a high pitched ringing in my right ear that won’t go away. I also experienced shortness of breath and my blood pressure dropped below normal. I stopped taking this medication. Will the ringing go away?
Sylvia
AskDocWeb: The high pitched ringing is called tinnitus. Fortunately most drug induced tinnitus goes away when the drug is discontinued.

Breastfeeding and Phentermine
Date: 2/17/2012
I just had mu son on December 20th and my doctor prescribed me phentermine last week. I told him I was breastfeeding and he said it was fine.. Is he wrong?? I’ve been taking it and breastfeeding, everything has been fine soo far. If I keep taking it will it cause brain damage or anything to my son?
Rachel
AskDocWeb: Unfortunately you are not likely to get a definitive answer because there is no data on the excretion of phentermine in human milk. However, Phentermine is chemically similar to amphetamine, which is known to pass through breast milk and have negative effects on nursing infants. Although many sources say not to breast-feed while taking phentermine every woman’s situation is different. There may be known health risks to the mother that override the possible risks to the infant.
Anxiety attack
Date: 2/20/2012
I had an anxiety attack last night in which I worried about work, various other things that I usually control no problem. There was rapid heart beats. I could breathe, however, it was not so comfortable. No more for me…. I will not take another pill no matter how well it helps me to lose weight. Not worth it. I will watch what I eat without this damn drug!

Phentermine rash
Date: 2/21/2012
I have been taking this drug for 1 week today. I have not been hungry and the energy effects are working ok. I am on a 1200 calorie diet and have lost about 4lbs so far. Yesterday I noticed a rash on the back of my neck. And today it got worse and spread to the front and on my chest. I this a normal side effect and will i have to quit taking this drug?
Lisa
AskDocWeb: A rash is NOT a normal side effect of Phentermine but it is listed as one of the possible side effects that should be reported to your doctor.
Can Phentermine cause blindness?
Date: 2/21/2012
I have been taking phetermine for several months and am now experiencing eye issues can these pills cause blindness?
Jean
AskDocWeb: In the past 9 years there has been only one report of blindness and blindness is NOT listed as one of the possible side effects of Phentermine. However, this medication can raise blood pressure and a change in vision is a symptom of very high blood pressure. The product information for Phentermine says to stop taking it and seek immediate medical attention if you have changes in vision (e.g. blurred vision).
Allergic to Sulfa and Sulfate Salts
Date: 2/25/2012
Hi, I am allergic to Sulfa and Sulfate Salts. I was wondering if I could take Phentermine because it has sodium lauryl sulfate in it? Would I be allergic?
Fabi
AskDocWeb: First a note for anyone who is allergic or has allergies to anything: Please tell your pharmacist about any allergies you have so that it can be noted in your records. This may prevent problems that could arise with future prescriptions.
There are people who are allergic to sulfa drugs but are not allergic to sodium lauryl sulfate. Being allergic to sulfa drugs does not necessarily mean that you are allergic to sulfur containing compounds. Those are two different allergies. Even people who are sulphite sensitive are generally okay with sulfates. Just make sure your doctor knows about all your allergies.
