AskDocWeb: Good luck, T.
Subj: Danger of Phentermine
Date: 6/6/2005
What is the danger of taking phentermine daily for months? I took it for the standard 3 months and am wanting to order more.
LISA
AskDocWeb: Of course you want to order more and that is the danger. Phentermine is habit forming, both physically and psychologically.
Subj: Gaining weight back
Date: 6/10/2005
I took phentermine for approximately 2 years. I have stopped the pills and I am eating right, exercising, drinking 64 oz. H2o, etc.. I am still gaining weight. Will this stop??? What can I do. I am very depressed and scared.
Janet
AskDocWeb: You will gain some weight back, but it should level off. Keep doing all the hard work you are doing by eating right and exercising. If your exercise program is good, some of the weight gain will be muscle. And that’s not bad.
Subj: Bulimia
Date: 6/15/2005
Two issues with me. 1) I take (self-prescribed) phentermine because it is the only thing that has helped in my long-time struggle with bulimia. Antidepressants worked to lift my depression, but only in combination with phentermine did I feel any relief from bulimic hell.
2) Last winter, I stopped taking it after 3-4 years, and experienced severe withdrawal symptoms. I thought I’d like a break from the phentermine expense, and had been doing well with the bulimia so I thought I could quit. Gradually, the withdrawal symptoms crept up, and then quickly intensified. I spent about 10 days in bed, most of it dead asleep. I was extremely depressed, woozy, weak, dizzy, and had some terrifying hallucinations. I live alone and had a horrible time with this, but was too weak to call the doctor. The withdrawals did pass in 2 weeks time, but I literally lost 2 weeks of my life.
After enduring that awful time, I promised myself not to go back to phentermine. But… the bulimia returned.
As far as I am concerned, it’s an easy choice. I would rather face withdrawals again, and whatever potential long-term side effects of phentermine, than live the rest of my life with bulimia. Anyone who has been lost in bulimia will understand this. I’m afraid to tell my doctor about it for fear he’ll insist I stop taking it. I won’t give up this ‘cure’, albeit a hack job. I already know that there are no magic pill-cures for bulimia. If this works, then I’m sticking with it.
Anyone else in a similar situation? I do feel quite alone in all of this.
‘lita

Subj: Phentermine and Stacker 2
Date: 6/16/2005
Hi, I am currently taking Stacker 2 (w/ephedra) to control my appetite; one pill at about 1 p.m. every day. If I start taking Phentermine (just got my prescription today) at 5:00 a.m. every day, do I have to stop taking the Stacker 2? please let me know, as ephedra was not listed as one of the drugs that should not be taken w/Phentermine. Thank you! K
Kathy
AskDocWeb: Both Phentermine and ephedra can cause tachycardia or rapid heartbeat. Please talk to your doctor before combining herbal treatments with prescription medication. Some herbs interact with medication.
Subj: Different strengths?
Date: 6/18/2005
Hello, I was just wondering if phentermine blue has a strength of 37.5? Because I just purchased the blue pill and I didn’t know what the difference was between buying the blue pill or the ones with the strengths next to them.
Michelle
AskDocWeb: Phentermine comes in varying strengths from 15mg up to 37.5mg. The color depends on which manufacturer produced it.
Subj: Sleep problems with Phentermine
Date: 6/26/2005
I just started taking Phentermine 4 days ago. While I have noticed a decrease in my appetite, it has been difficult for me to go to sleep at night. Last night I stayed up until 3 am and was not tired enough to go to bed, even though I knew I had to wake up at 6 am. Will this side effect decrease over time, or will I always have problems falling asleep at night?
Michelle
AskDocWeb: It stimulates the nervous system, which can cause problems with sleeping. It may not go away until your body builds up a resistance to the drug, and then you wouldn’t want to take it anyway.
Subj: You are doing it wrong
Date: 6/27/2005
It is terrible that you all are having problems. You all are doing it wrong… don’t stress about it. Take it one day at a time and you will see a change. Be patient. Don’t try to be Mr. or Mrs. Fitness and do so much. Let your body adjust… don’t put it in shock… just start by drinking more water. I find drinking a little bottle of water, when I first get up, helps. Then slowly, cut back some of your food and then you may see your appetite change. If you stress about what you eat, too much then you will only being hurting yourself. Just cut back.
I would do a little exercise… some sit ups… a little walking… some stretches… whatever you enjoy and makes you feel better.
It won’t happen over night and you should not rush it. It will happen, if you take the pill. To me, I found taking the pill every other day for the first month, good for me, then I took it everyday…
I lost my weight that I had on me for 10 years and I lost it in 3months, alot of it. Then I slowly worked myself off of it and losing the rest. Once your body looses some weight it will feel better and you will be able to do more easily.
Hope this helps. No one should look like a barbie, just be healthy. Looks don’t matter. I don’t care what people think of me. They come and go and who knows really how they feel. I have me and Jesus loves me and that is all I need. And since I gave it all to him, I have a man who loves me and most importantly, I now love myself and it is not because of my size but I am happy that I am healthier…God Bless.

Subj: Loss of sex drive with Phentermine
Date: 6/29/2005
I have been taking phentermine for about 3 months now and have noticed an unpleasant side effect. My fiance and I have a great sex live however lately it feels like my sex drive is decreasing. Is this a normal side effect? And is there a medication that I can take along with the phentermine in order to get my sex drive back?
Amy
AskDocWeb: Phentermine is known to affect the libido (sex drive). There are no drugs available to increase your sex drive yet but as an alternative, some of the herbal products like Vigorelle are worth exploring.
Subj: Chest and leg pain
Date: 6/29/2005
I have been on Phentermine for five weeks and lost a total of 10 lbs. All is well but I find sometimes I have “chest pain” and recently I have been experiencing a little “leg pain” should I be concerned. The chest pain is only once in a while and always late at night, usually before I go to bed. My leg pain comes and goes. I am on no other medication, great blood pressure, very healthy overall.
Chris
AskDocWeb: Yes, there is a reason to be concerned. The pills may be causing tachycardia (rapid heart rate). The leg pain could be because the valves in your heart are not opening and closing as they should.
Subj: Unacceptable side effects with phentermine
Date: 7/11/2005
While using phentermine I experienced some side effect i.e. chest pressure, pounding heart, slight tremor. I have not used the medication in about 10 days because of these side effects but they have not resolved. How long will this take? Thanks
Tammy
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may not be able to use Phentermine. We think it would be a good idea to visit with your physician about this and possibly have an EKG done. There could be another problem.
Subj: Shortness of breath, dizziness and tightness in throat
Date: 7/12/2005
hi I have been taking phentermine for 2 months now and all of a sudden I am getting shortness of breath and dizziness some times tightness in my throat. Why is this and also what are the consequences if taken for a long period of time? Thanks,
Melissa
AskDocWeb: With your symptoms, it sounds like you should stop immediately and talk to your doctor before proceeding. Do not take any chances with what could be an allergic reaction.
Subj: How fast
Date: 7/14/2005
How fast can you see results?
Priscilla
AskDocWeb: Everyone is different and have different results. Typically results are seen within the first month.
Subj: Drug pushing mother?
Date: 7/18/2005
My mom is taking phentermine and wants me to try it. I am 18, 5′ 6″ and 140 lb. Is it safe for me to take this product and will it affect my birth control pills?
Tammy
AskDocWeb: Phentermine is only for those who are obese. At 140 pounds you are not even overweight. You can check your BMI here, it is only 23 which is desirable.
Subj: Registered nurse
Date: 7/21/2005
I was taking phentermine 37.5mg. I took it for 3 weeks and I lost 10 lbs. I unfortunately had to stop taking it last week because it caused my blood pressure to go up and caused irregular heartbeat. I didn’t go to the doctor. I am a registered nurse and I decided to stop the phentermine. Since stopping them my blood pressure is back to normal and my heart isn’t going crazy anymore. I really wished I could have stayed on them because it’s the first thing that has really worked for me.
Kim
AskDocWeb: As you know, 37.5 is on the high side of dosage. It may be possible to get results with a lower dosage and avoid the side effects at the same time.
Subj: Had to stop taking Phentermine
Date: 7/23/2005
My wife has been on Phentermine for 3 and 1/2 months. She has been given this medication from a physician’s assistant. My wife has been very unhealthy. She bruises easy now and has a very pail look about her. She has had increased vaginal discharge in the last week or two. I am worried about her she has lost 35lbs or more and has just now been cut off this drug by her physician’s assistant. I am worried for her health. 3 days ago the physician’s assistant found a lump on her right breast. In addition to all of this her thyroid was over active until the dosage has been decreased and her thyroid seems to be getting better. I would not advocate anyone taking this drug. Please answer some of my questions.
Jackson
AskDocWeb: A 35 pound weight loss is okay but with the effect it had on her, we are pleased to hear that she stopped taking it. As long as her blood counts are checked and they are fine she will return to normal. Read more feedback from users.
