Can I take Phentermine with Sertraline and Amitryptiline?
8/30/2012
I’ve been taking 1 1/2 tabs of 37.5mg of Phentermine a day for the last 6 weeks. I’ve lost 2lbs and I still feel hungry and crave sweets. I do get dry mouth, which I can deal with, but I’m extremely tired come midday. I have no energy at all, so no I haven’t been exercising. Quite honestly, I think I feel worse now then before I started taking this drug hoping to get to a healthier weight. I do have a question though. After reading some of the comments on here I was wondering if it’s ok to take Phentermine with Sertraline and Amitryptiline? Thanks,

Sarah

AskDocWeb: There is a major drug interaction possible when amitriptyline is used with sertraline. The problem is that sertraline can inhibit the body’s ability to process amitriptyline. This can result in a buildup of significant plasma levels of amitriptyline in the body. For details, look up isoenzyme CYP450 2D6. Using sertraline with amitriptyline increases the risk of serotonin syndrome, which is a rare but serious and potentially fatal condition thought to result from hyperstimulation of the brainstem (5HT1A receptors). This combination is used only when the benefits are deemed greater than the risk.

Phentermine may possess serotonergic activity and is generally not administered with serotonin reuptake inhibitors because of the additive risk of serotonin syndrome.

The combination of phentermine with amitriptyline may produce additive cardiovascular effects, increasing the risk of hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, tachycardia, and fever.

Horrible back pains
8/31/2012
I am having horrible back pains about 2 weeks after starting phentermine. Is this common?

Bonnie

AskDocWeb: Back pain is not common nor is it listed among the possible side effects of Phentermine but there are a few reports of that symptom.

Drug test?
9/3/2012
I am taking Phentermine 57.5. I have been taking it for 2 weeks. Can my husband fail a drug test for having sexual intercourse with me?

Sierra

AskDocWeb: You can relax, that is not an issue with this medication.

Phen and GERD
9/11/2012
Can phen cause gerd? I am having the worst time had to stop takin phen 6 days ago and im still having trouble?

Britney

AskDocWeb: Hello Britney. We looked up your question and found nothing to suggest that Phentermine might cause GERD. Its possible of course, but it has not been reported to date as such by past or current users.

Possible dosage adjustment?
9/12/2012
Ok so I have been taking 37.5mg (1x daily). I have seen a slight increase in energy. Basically I could fall asleep anywhere anytime even driving (with 8 or more hrs of sleep the night b4) not sure y I’m always sooo tired but anyway since startin the diet pills, I don’t have that overwhelmin need to fall asleep so that’s good. However, I take it @6am soon as I wake on an empty stomach as directed but by 11 or 12pm I’m getting tired & hungry. Is it possible my dosage needs to be increase & if so, will my dr do that if I originally got the pills @ a weight loss center? My dr knows I was getting them, I got her approval 1st. Thank u for reading.

J

AskDocWeb: Please speak with your doctor if you think that Phentermine is not working properly. The maximum dosage is typically 37.5mg daily but that varies with age and other health factors. Some patients take it in divided doses to spread the effect throughout the day. You might ask your doctor if that would work for you.

Concerned about long term effects
9/13/2012
I started Phentermine a week ago and I think I’ve already lost close to 10 lbs. (Probably water weight but I’ll take what I can get) at any rate, my side effects are dry mouth, extreme “hot flashes”, and sweats a couple times a day, unable to sleep and perpetually happy. I am worried, I cannot cry. I have had some things happen this wk. that I would normally cry about, for good reason and nothing. The tears wont come. Its just really weird. Also, I am concerned on what research has been done about the long term side effects now of Phentermine. I know I should have thought before I started, but if you look at so many other drugs, there are so many class action law suits on the long term effects that kill people. I see a fatal lung disease Pulmonary Hypertention is associated with it and now I’m afraid to keep taking it. Is this something I can get from taking it for only 3 mths? I’m losing weight, no heart palpatations and I’d like to keep on it for the 3 months prescribed. Oh ps. another side effect I have is talking alot. LOL

Tina

AskDocWeb: Hi Tina, talking a lot is allowed here. If you read the package insert you’ll see that Phentermine is prescribed for short-term use, which typically ranges from 6 to 12 weeks. Although it appears rare, we have read of one case where a 29 year old woman was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension after taking phentermine for only five weeks.

Over time the body builds up a tolerance for the drug and it loses effectiveness. Clinicians are often advised to obtain written informed consent if phentermine is prescribed for longer than 12 weeks because of the possibility of dependency.

Gallbladder issues?
9/14/2012
Hello, I started taking phentermine In may (2012) and 3 days ago I had to have emergency gallbladder surgery. I had gallstones and my gallbladder was acutely inflamed. I never had problems before taking this medication. I began having attacks at night, sending me to the ER. Finally, the last visit to ER they did an ultrasound on my gallbladder and found the problem. *has anyone else had issues with gallbladder when taking this medication?

I was on it 3 full months and lost about 24 lbs. I was 172 and now weigh 147. So, I wans’t too overweight. Do I need to stay away from phentermine from now on?? Please, if you’ve had these problems, explain in detail, maybe they need to discontinue this med if it causes such dangerous body issues.

Advised to quit Phentermine
9/17/2012
I have been taking phentermine for 18 days. Started with severe headaches, tingling sensation in my head, and neck pain the first week. Week 2 still had headache but not as severe, tingling changed to head itching, still had neck pain, mood swings/easily upset, and constipation. As of today, day 18, still have headaches, neck pain, head itches like crazy, feel like I am on an emotional roller coaster, constipation, and just an overall feeling of unease. Needless to say, I have been advised to quit taking this medication and will no longer be taking it. On the weight loss side; I lost 9 pounds in 9 days, 1 pound from day 9 to day 14, and gained 1 pound back between day 14 and day 18. It did cut my appetite tremendously. Hope this is helpful to some of you.
