Subj: Difference between Prilosec and Nexium
Date: 7/11/2009
I have had acid reflex desease for the past year I have been taking Prilosec, and it works well.. I am concerned regarding the long term use of Prilosec. I also want to know what is the difference between Prilosec and Nexium – should I use nexium instead?
Angie
AskDocWeb: Nexium costs a lot more than Prilosec. Nexium is prescription only where Prilosec is available both by prescription and over-the-counter. According to court documents* “there is no pharmacodynamic reason why a dose of (S)-omeprazole, i.e., Nexium, would interact with the stomach’s parietal cells any differently than would an equal dose of omeprazole, i.e., Prilosec”
*United States District Court for the District of Columbia, Civil Action Numbers 06-2084, 06-2089, 06-2155, 06-2157, and 07-0041 (all RWR)
Subj: Prilosec OTC long-term?
Date: 12/11/2010
I’ve had heard that prilosec OTC has an increased chances in causing cancer if taken for long-term is this true?
Geo
AskDocWeb: There has been a lot of talk but so far that talk is only about a theoretical possibility of cancer. There is no conclusive connection and there are no case reports of that happening. With the widespread use of PPIs more data on the risk of increased gastric and colon malignancy (cancer) is needed.
Subj: Taking a PPI on and off
Date: 4/28/2011
I have run of the mill acid reflux and was given a script for 20mg of Prilosec. I started taking it, felt great and concluded that I don’t need to take it anymore. My syptoms came back, starting retaking the medicine and it took longer for my syptoms to subside. If a patient gets into a cycle of taking a ppi on and off, can they build up a tolerance? Thank you.
Bill
AskDocWeb: There are reports of people building up a tolerance from using then too often or continual use but not from using them on and off. Switching PPIs to a different one seems to help.
Subj: Valtrex with prilosec?
Date: 9/28/2011
Can valtrex be taken with prilosec?
Curious
AskDocWeb: Although there are no drug interactions listed for these two drugs, you would have to consult with your doctor to find out if that combination would be safe for your particular situation.
Omeprazole is my lifesaver
Date: 3/28/2012
I have been taking Omeprazole for over 2 yrs now, and I can honestly say that it is my lifesaver. Before I realized I had a serious issue, I was bent over in pain every night, not able to go to sleep, not able to breathe well. I have no side effects, related to the meds anyways lol.

Anyone have problems with their teeth?
Date: 3/15/2013
I have been on Prilosec for 6 years now because it was the only thing that worked on my GERD. I take calcium and magnesium every day to try to protect my bones. Approximately three months ago, I started getting painful muscle cramps in my feet that would go away if I took extra magnesium. The cramps came back and now I was getting them in my hands.
While waiting for an apt with my doc, I’ve been trying out H2 blockers without much success. I’m concerned that only a PPI will work and I’ll end up having the same problem. Also, I’ve read about the effects of PPI’s on hip and femur fractures. I’m not reading anything about teath though…I am at the dentist every couple of months because I fractured a tooth. It’s costing me a fortune. I’m wondering if the PPI is damaging my teeth. I don’t take anything else and I’m a total OCD tooth brusher. Anyone having similar issues? Thanks,
Cindy
Trouble breathing
Date: 5/14/2006
Omeprazole (prilosec) is completely TOXIC. I too had trouble breathing 5 days after starting Omeprazole for suspected reflux. At first I refused to believe that the medication was doing it so I stupidly continued taking all while getting sicker! I stopped 5 days ago and although the breathing is still labored (cannot get a deep breath) it is getting better. I have read reviews that say it can take up to a month to get back to normal after being poisoned. I have no faith in the medical field.

Sour, metallic taste
Date: 9/19/2016
After 6 days of using omeprazole magnesium (otc) my taste changed negatively. Sour, metallic etc. I haven’t taken any for a week, yet my taste is still not normal. I don’t understand if the half life of this drug is so fast clearing the system, why my taste is still changed. And I can find no information on when it will become normal again. Thank you.
Renee
AskDocWeb: Are you taking any other prescription medication that might effect your sense of taste? The possible causes of changes in the sense of taste are often hard to pin down and are not well understood. This subject is just one of many that could benefit from more research.
