Subj: Angst with Propecia
Date: 4/3/2005
I took Propecia for about 2 months. I stopped when I started having too much energy/angst that occured mostly in the morning. I had heart “dipping” during workouts, but since I stopped about a month ago, the dipping continues (occasionally). I also gained 10 lbs that hasn’t gone away (no diet change). I still have slight angst in the a.m., but it’s better. I hope these side effects go away.

Subj: Hair Genesis
Date: 4/7/2005
I am using hair genesis for 3 month. From using theirs, is any sexual side effect or I will not able to birth a baby after a year? I discontinued the genesis so I will go back to normal or not?
Salman
AskDocWeb We have not heard anything about sexual side effects from Hair Genesis so you should be okay.
Subj: Thinking about trying Propecia
Date: 4/9/2005
Hi, My name is Alan and I’m thinking of taking up and trying Propecia. It seems that this stuff blocks more than is said and I can’t find the details of what it actually does, apart from preventing hairloss. To keep this Propecia from interfering with the rest of my body and testosterone function, would I be able to apply it on to my scalp in some form? I would very much appreciate your advice in this regard. Thanks,
Alan
AskDocWeb Propecia comes only in pill from. Apart from preventing hair loss, Propecia does seem to have an affect on the sex lives of many men. Read all the feedback here and you may decide that there are worse things than hair loss.
Subj: Gaining lean body mass while on Propecia
Date: 4/9/2005
I’m a big fan of propecia and have been using it for 4 years. I did have a question about the effect on gaining lean body mass from weight lifting. Is there any affect?
Mark
AskDocWeb The medical community says no but we would like to hear from some weight lifters who use Propecia. If you know a weight lifter or body builder who uses Propecia, ask them if it has caused any problems. If so, they can share their story here.
Subj: Substantial hair loss
Date: 4/11/2005
Well I’m 24 years old and for as long as I could remember a main characteristic traits I held was a VERY thick main of hair but in the last 2-4 years I have encountered a substantial amount of hair loss as well as the super dry texture my hair has gotten, so my question is which method of hair restoration would you go with at my age?

AskDocWeb We suggest you consult with your physician about the condition of your scalp to see if there is a medical problem you should deal with first.
Subj: Nightmare
Date: 4/11/2005
My father’s receeded hair has been a source of great worry to me since childhood. When I was twenty-two I started taking Propecia (although the evidence of hair loss was no doubt an invention) a few months later I started to lose my ardour with my then girlfriend. We began to argue and eventually broke up from tension owing to my frustration and anger. My libedo plummeted, and what was once my fondest joy in life is now, three and a half years later a nightmare. I have no confidence, I have been to doctors who tell me it is all in my head. I can’t sleep. The real feeling of impotence is seeing an exciting looking girl and knowing that I simply cannot deliver. My mind and body no longer work in harmony. I pray to god to let me have my former love, and ability to make love back. All this for a little show of vain fear. Believe me, all your problems cannot be solved with a pill. Now, neither can mine. Be wary! Think! You might lose that which is dearest to you, simply because someone needs to make money. Try lying with a woman unmanned. She may have pity, but will never respect or love you…wretchedness, all.
Bryan
AskDocWeb So three and a half years after you started Propecia you still have sexual side effects. It would be helpful to know if you are still taking the Propecia or how long ago you stopped taking it.
Subj: Seeing results
Date: 4/13/2005
Propecia is something that does work. I was a bit suspicious before taking it. Even when my doctor suggested me to take it, I was not sure whether to take it or not. But its been about 8-9 months I’m taking propecia without any side effects. And most importantly, I’m seeing some result.

Subj: Big problem with Propecia
Date: 4/16/2005
I am 32 years old. Started Propecia two years ago. I started seeing the results just in one months. But I also started having less desire for sex. I propecia has a big problem it messes up with your system in a big way. The company claims its only 2% who get effected but I believe real figure is much more than that. Some should complain to FDA and stop this drug. This drug works but has severe side effects for sure.
Sean
AskDocWeb How true! Here is the place to start: Complaints to the FDA.
Subj: Weight lifting and Propecia
Date: 4/14/2005
I have been taking propecia for a month and procerin for about a week, without much noticable difference. I am on a strict weight lifting regiment, which I fear may be adversly affecting the propecia. Is there a correlation between lifting(which raises testosterone levels), and Propecia( which lowers them). Has anyone else had success with these products while also on a lifting regiment.

Subj: How long to get back to normal?
Date: 4/16/2005
About three months ago, I stopped taking Finasteride because of a decresase in sex drive and difficulty in achieving an erection. This was after taking the product for a three month trial period. What steps can I take to try to get back where I was. Did I do irreperable damage to the sex drive and the spermatogenisis process? Please advise and thanks,
Bill
AskDocWeb You have to be patient and wait to see what happens. The manufacturer says that everything should return to normal within the 12 months following discontinuing Propecia. Please let us know how long it takes in your situation.
Subj: Minoxidil
Date: 4/16/2005
Hi, I love your website. Is it possible to put some information for minoxidil? Thanks,
Jocelyn
AskDocWeb Yes, you can find it here.
Subj: Fantastic progress
Date: 4/18/2005
I have been using rogaine fairly regularly for around a year (but in the early stages often forgot about it for days on end). Then about three months ago I could no longer bear the receding hairline that was making me look older and less virile than all of those other bushy haired 26 year olds. So, I began taking Propecia and Rogaine religiously 3 months ago and my progress has been fantastic. The hair on my crown has thickened, my temples are re-growing (still peach fuzz but at least better coverage) and there is a definite overall increase in hair density. I have had zero sexual side effects and would even suggest that I have had an increased libido (possibly due to increased confidence which has resulted in more female encounters). The only physical change I can report is an increase in weight but that may be due to frequenting more late night establishments, beer and junk food (none of which I recommend!).

Subj: Permanent side effects?
Date: 4/19/2005
I have read through most of the emails on this site. It seems that there are a large number of people who have taken propecia and have had serious sexual side effects that have persisted after they stopped taking propecia. Consistently your response has been that Merck did not represent this in their initial warnings, why have you refused to mention to people that permanent side effects are a reality? I have been on a number of different forums and I have encountered a number of men who are still suffering with an incredibly reduced quality of life due to the drug. I think it would be the least you could do to warn people that these side effects can be very serious even if they only happen to a small percentage of people. Thanks,
Charles
AskDocWeb The main purpose of this website is to share information about the side effects of these products. We do not know if the sexual side effects of Propecia are permanent or not. We are keeping an open mind because we recognize that there is a difference between permanent side effects and those that disappear after a few months. More feedback is needed from those who have long-term symptoms after discontinuing Propecia.
Subj: Erection problem after Propecia
Date: 4/20/2005
I (used) propecia about a year ago and after two months I gave it up because I started to lose my erection. Till this day I can’t seem to keep an erection. Will this ever stop? Will I ever go back to the way I was? Please someone get back to me.
Abraham
AskDocWeb If I understand you correctly, you stopped using Propecia 10 months ago and the erection problem is still present. We are tracking this problem and encourage you to report back when/if your problem is resolved.
Subj: Decreased libido and volume of ejaculate
Date: 4/21/2005
Hi, I’ve taken propecia for about 8 months and have been off of it for 2 months after seeing decreased libido and less volume of ejaculate. The side effects have subsided a bit since I stopped taking it but it’s not near what it was before. What can I do to help this? How long do I have to wait?
John
AskDocWeb That is not known, some have returned to normal and others are still waiting for this to happen.
Subj: Propecia and blood pressure meds
Date: 4/26/2005
Has there been a side effect of Propecia counter acting High Blood pressure meds, like ACE inhibitors, like ACTACE. Thanks,
Joe
AskDocWeb Haven’t heard of Propecia affecting any blood pressure meds.
Subj: Propecia and cholesterol levels
Date: 4/27/2005
I took propecia for 3 years and noticed an increase in cholesterol levels. I went from 146 to 187. I stopped taking it and within a year my level was back down to 149. Anyone else notice similiar possible side effects?
Chris
Subj: Propecia caused muscle pain
Date: 4/28/2005
I have had a hair transplant and was prescribed propecia. I have been taking propecia for 4 weeks now, and have muscle pain through my body, and genitals. One month before the surgery, I took propecia for 2 weeks and had bad stomach pains. Thinking it was just a stomach virus at first, until my wife asked me to stop taking the pills to see if the pain would go away, and it did. After the surgery I started back up on propecia until now. Now that I’m in pain. I would stop taking this drug if you have any early side effects.

Subj: Depression and Propecia
Date: 4/29/2005
While taking propecia I have noticed a feeling of depression at times. Is depression a possible side effect of this drug??
Randy
Askdocweb Although depression isn’t a listed as an “official” side effect of propecia, several have reported it here.
Update December 2010: Merck has officially added depression to the list of possible side effects of Propecia. Read more feedback.
