Subj: Mintop Soln
Date: 4/30/2005
Does mintop soln help in stopping hair loss? Is it true that once we stop using it hair loss will start again? I earlier had scalp psoriasis but now it is not there due to medication. Now the same doctor has advised mintop for hair loss. Should it be used through out my life?
Ra
AskDocWeb: Yes, once you start using a hair loss product, you have to keep using it to keep the benefits. If you stop using it, your hair will resume within weeks. Mintop Soln is just another version of Minoxidil.
Subj: Propecia and the liver
Date: 5/2/2005
Does propecia affect the liver? I have been on it for a few years and my liver proteins are now very high. Prior to taking it, they were normal.
Bill
AskDocWeb: We know that Propecia has some influence on the liver. If you have liver disease, you should let your doctor know so that the dosage can be adjusted and you may need special monitoring during therapy.
Subj: Propecia and Clonazepam
Date: 5/3/2005
Since April, 2004 I have been under severe stress (heart stent in 7/03, divorce in 4/04, panic attack in 4/04, two panic attacks in Sept 04 and children problems). Anyway, about 2 months in 6/2004, I noticed a small loss of hair in the front left and experienced limp hair for about a month. It seems to correct but after Sept 2004, I had limp hair again and in Nov 2004 had some hair loss in the front left. In Jan. 2005 I was brushing my hair and noticed hair come out in the front and right side. I had noticed in Nov. 2004 that the right side seemed stressed. I did some research and decided that the clonazepam I was taking for sleep may be the cause. I also started Propecia in Feb. 2005 and stopped at the end of Feb.05, but I went cold turkey off the clonazepam in early Mar05 and exerienced significant problems. My hair “collapsed.” I could not syle it and after being off it for 10 days, I noticed I had lost alot of hair in the front (diffuse) and scalp and alot on the left side (I had insomnia, anxiety, and several other bad withdrawal effects). I had to go back on the clonazepam on 3/14/05 but it is now 5/3/05 and I still have significant loss in the front left side and my hair just is not the same. It seems to be regrowing (my pubic hair had stopped growing and then grew rapidly after being off clonazepam). Do you think the Propecia and Clonazepam withdrawal caused a sudden telogen hair loss? I have researched clonazepam and it does cause hair loss while taking it and during withdrawal. What do you think happened? Thanks.
J
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you had more than enough stress to cause hair loss even without the drugs. Discontinuing Propecia is likely to cause a period of accelerated hair loss but it only lasts a few months.
Subj: Fast side effects
Date: 5/3/2005
How long does it take before the side effects begin to show? I’ve only taken it for two days and already have problems with impotence. Is this just a mental thing or the propecia?
Paul
AskDocWeb: Some people are more sensitive to this drug than others, and it is a known side effect, sorry.
Subj: Propecia exacerbating hair loss
Date: 5/5/2005
I’ve been taking propecia since September of 2004 and so far- nothing. Not only has my balding not ceased but I am shedding just as bad as before. Have you ever heard of propecia actually exacerbating the problem as opposed to mitigating or doing nothing?
Greg
AskDocWeb: In some cases, yes. It doesn’t work for everyone.
Subj: Trying to conceive with Procerin
Date: 5/5/2005
My husband is taking the common hairloss medication Propecia. I am concerned about two particular things. Can any affects be passed to me through his semen. Also, we are trying to conceive and I am worried that this may be a contributing factor to way we are not pregnant yet.
Jane
AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer, .8% of users had decreased volume of ejaculate, which could be the reason you are not pregnant yet. Judging by the feedback received here, your husband may want to discontinue use until you get pregnant.
Subj: ED with Propecia
Date: 5/6/2005
I have been using propecia for 8 months now and it seems like my hair loss has stopped or slowed down considerably at worst. Around month 4, I noticed my erections becoming softer and I now have difficulty achieving and maintaining an erection along with a definite loss in sexual desire. I hear that these side effects can go away with continued use of propecia. Is that true and has anyone had these same side effects eventually go away on their own while continuing to use propecia?
Josh
AskDocWeb: Yes, these are side effects of propecia and they may or may not go away with continued use of the drug.
Subj: Hair falling out again
Date: 5/9/2005
I’ve been using propecia with excellent results for 3 years. I was ecstatic. I experienced no side effects whatsoever, I still have a much higher than normal sex drive. The problem is about 4 months ago, I noticed hair falling out again, and my hair getting thinner. Does propecia stop working? Thanks,
Brent
AskDocWeb: Yes, it is possible that it could stop working. That’s one of the problems with using drugs to achieve an effect, the body sometimes develops a resistance to them.
Subj: prostate or bladder Pain
Date: 5/9/2005
Can Propecia cause prostate problems? I have been taking Propecia for many years. For the past few years I have experienced prostate or bladder pain after weight lifting (working out legs in particular). The pain occurs 3 to 4 hours after working out, and goes away by the next day. Recently I did not take propecia for a week (lazy on a refill) and did not experience the pain after working out. What do you think?
Patrick
AskDocWeb: Some pains are intermittent, which makes them hard to track down. You shouldn’t be experiencing bladder or prostate pain after working out. Have your PSA level checked and a urine sample examined as soon as possible to be one safe side.
Subj: Want to restart taking Propecia
Date: 5/10/2005
I have a question on propecia-used it for 3 years and it was fine, good results. Stopped 3 years ago as were trying for children and that won’t stop now until end of next year when we have had all the children we want. I have lost a lot of hair since stopping (only 60% of hair on top remains) by the end of next year this may be 30-40%. I was wandering if I start taking this again after we have had our children will I still be able to grow some of the hair back I lost over last 3 years or just keep what I have? It says to start using this in early stage of hair loss but what does early mean (within 1 year of losing hair?) or within 5-6 years of losing hair? Thanks,
Bob
AskDocWeb: You may be able to regain some of the hair that you lost, but it may take 6 months to a year. Those who took Propecia at the beginning of their hair loss had the best results. Many of those who started taking it later still got at least some results.
Subj: 6 years on Propecia
Date: 5/10/2005
Been on propecia for 6 years now. Possible mood swings and significantly less sexual desire, all in the name of vanity…
BRETT

I have been on propecia for a little over 2 years now and been able to keep my hair. Since I have seborrheic dermatitis I have been perscribed Nizoral 2% Ketoconazole shampoo. What is causing the shedding the shampoo or the propecia?
Brian
AskDocWeb: Not possible to tell. It could be something else.
Subj: Propecia and cancer
Date: 5/11/2005
Propecia was originally designed for use against prostrate cancer. I have heard that if you are taking this medication for baldness and eventually develop prostrate cancer, you can develop an acute case of cancer. Is this true?
Daniel
AskDocWeb: Unfortunately, yes it is. A recent study produced a strange mix of good and bad news. It found that the overall number of cancers in men taking Propecia long-term dropped from 63 per 1,000 to 45 per 1,000, that’s the good news. The bad news is, the study found that 22 of those who developed cancer would have an acute (aggressive) form of cancer. It appears that overall, taking Propecia every day for seven years would reduce your risk of getting cancer by 25 percent but if you did get it, it’s more likely to be a bad one. It seems as if the drug prevents the formation of minor cancers but may allow the more aggressive forms to become more common.
Subj: Some dizziness
Date: 5/12/2005
I’ve been using Procerin for a few weeks now, and see changes already, but have noticed some dizziness. Has this been a common occurrance, and is there anything I can do to offset it (besides the obvious–not taking it). Thanks!
Doug
AskDocWeb: Dizziness is not a common side effect. It might be a temporary adjustment of your body to the saw palmetto. If it continues, do the obvious.
Subj: Testicle pain
Date: 5/12/2005
I have been taking proscar for 3 months, and I have also experienced testicle pain. Some websites say that it´s one of the rare symptoms. I know I should go to the doctor, but, in the mean time, … could you tell me if this is dangerous? Thanks,
Alvaro
AskDocWeb: Testicle pain is one sign of cancer in that area. Like most diseases it is much better to treat it early. If you let it go or put it off, it becomes much more difficult to treat. Get yourself examined by a physician.
Subj: Shrinking testicles?
Date: 5/12/2005
Is it possible that Propecia could cause my testicles to shrink? they look like they have ‘pulled up’ to my body, but don’t hang like they used to. Have been taking drug for about 3 years now. Am 34.
Mike
AskDocWeb: We haven’t heard of anyone having this problem, better get it checked out. Read more feedback.
