Subj: Thoughts on finpecia
Date: 5/30/2005
Started taking the finpecia (cipla brand) 3months ago, not any problems if I stick to the regular dosage, 1mg per day. Did notice a small libido problem at 19th day but it cleared up about a week later, it was actually kinda nice to have a hormone holiday. (I was taking about 3/4 mg twice a day.) decent hair re-growth, best I’ve seen from any product so far, rogaine was a joke. (or should I say scam). Any side affects cleared up before they were noticed. (if there were any besides the libido problem). I read earlier that the guy had a rash, DHT affects skin, maybe the lack of it caused skin to be affected, shoulda stuck it out to see if it cleared up, or maybe an allergic reaction from soap or something due to lack of DHT. Shoulda reduced dosage and then ramped up, find a happy median. It shouldn’t hurt anyone (male), maybe just too much too soon. 1 mg a day is max, it doesn’t limit minimum. Anyway, hope this inspires people to try it. Do lots of reading and use common sense. Guy asked about crushing up, try it, and continue to take orally, if it helps, great, if not, what’s a pill or two. Had the same idea myself, try putting it in emu oil since it’s transdermal. (may not be soluable in oil though).
Sam
AskDocWeb: Crushing the pill is not recommended. It is not just a question of “what’s a pill or two”. Propecia is coated to protect women from the contents which can cause birth defects. If you crush the pill, the dust on your hands could be absorbed through the skin of any pegnant woman you come into contact with and could cause a birth defect. That is something you really want to avoid.
Subj: Chances of regrowing hair in front
Date: 6/1/2005
Hi I am 20 years old and have been taking propecia for about 2 weeks. My hair is receding in the front and I was wondering if my chances of regrowth are better sense I caught it at an early age? Have you ever seen regrowth in the front of the head after taking propecia?
Kevin
AskDocWeb: Catching it early is a definite advantage but we haven’t seen improvement in front, no matter what product is used.
Subj: Rogaine and diet
Date: 6/2/2005
Hi, I am 19 year old male and have always had a fairly high hairline at the temples, now I am starting to notice a receding hairline. I was wondering if using rogaine would help stop any further hairloss at the temples and even help regrow some. How long would it take for me to see results? If it did regrow would I have to continue use to prevent the hair I grew from falling out? Also could a lack of balanced diet speed hair loss?
Taylor
AskDocWeb: People have had different results as far as time, some 3 months, some 6 months. There is no way to tell beforehand what results you will get. You just have to experiment, give it time and be patient. And yes, diet does affect your hair loss, eat your fruits and veggies! If you don’t eat a balanced diet, check out Advecia.
Subj: Ejaculate and libido problems
Date: 6/2/2005
My wife and I are trying to have a baby, how long after using propecia do the ejaculate loss and libido problems start to usually occur?
Vin
AskDocWeb: Everyone is so different that those symptoms can show up anywhere from a few weeks to three years later (and longer).
Subj: Proscar
Date: 6/9/2005
I have been taking 1mg proscar for almost 3 years. I’m 21 now after using 1mg for bout 2yrs. I wanted to switch to 1.25mg cutting into 1/4. Did it for a month then switched back to 1mg, I panicked. Then after doing it for a couple weeks decided that cutting into 5ths just sucked cause it was breaking too much. I then switched back to cutting into 4ths but I have noticed alot of hair shedding. Could it be that? I have been doing the 4ths for bout 20 days and sticking to it. Can my lost hair grow back if I stick to it or are they lost? Could using Adderall 30mg XR be a reason too. Worrying a lot about this, please get back to me.
Mark
AskDocWeb: Yes, the Adderal could influence your hair loss. Your hair should grow back if you stick to it.
Subj: No sexual side effects
Date: 6/10/2005
I believe the stats are accurate on the low percentage of sexual side effects. The 1.8% leaves plenty of people to complain on web sites, but people that experience none usually won’t bother to comment on the lack of side effects. I’ve been taking it for about 4 years. It seems to have slowed my hair loss, which was frighteningly rapid, to a very slow crawl. That’s worth the price for me, at least for now. Oh, and no side effects.

Subj: Finasteride, acne and cancer?
Date: 6/12/2005
I have been taking finasteride 5mg for 6 months to stop hirsutism. Although the hair growth seems to have slowed down by its use, I am getting more acne than usual. Is it due to finasteride? Also, being a woman, I’m concerned on whether finasteride in long term use can cause breast cancer? Please tell me.
Mridula
AskDocWeb: We have seen no link between this medication and breast cancer. The only link we found to any kind of cancer was a recent study about overall number of cancers in men taking Propecia long-term. That study found that the rate that men developed cancer dropped from 63 per 1,000 to 45 per 1,000. The study also found that 22 of the 45 who developed cancer would have an acute or aggressive form of cancer. It appears that overall, taking Propecia every day for seven years would reduce the risk of getting cancer by 25 percent but if you did get it, it’s more likely to be a bad one. It seems as though the drug prevents the formation of minor cancers and allows the more aggressive forms to become more common.
Subj: Before hair loss starts
Date: 6/13/2005
I am 44 years old. I have a full head of hair, but have noticed when washing my hair that it is thinner than in the past. I was talking to friends who are taking Propecia and they all have full heads of hair prior to the treatment. My question, should I be taking this pill as precaution against future hair loss? Also do I need to continue the treatment throughout the rest of my life, for the hair to continue growing strong?
Edward
AskDocWeb: We believe that if you take any prescription drug when it is not needed you will cause problems. Aside from that, there are no studies on the outcome of taking it before you have hair loss. And yes, once you start, you would have to continue taking it to keep the benefits.
Subj: Depression, anxiety and panic attacks
Date: 6/14/2005
I’m 28 years old. I was using propecia for 10 months, on the one hand it did stop my hair loss, on the other hand about 3 month ago I stated getting a bad depression, anxiety and panic attacks, which is different from anything I had ever felt before. I’ve stopped using propecia for a week now and I don’t know if it could be the cause of this. At the first couple of month of using the medicine I had sexual problems (difficulty getting an erection and no sex drive) which eventually went away, now I’m getting the same symptoms again. My question is can propecia be the cause of a depression, anxiety and panic attacks.
Mark
AskDocWeb: Although depression isn’t a listed as an “official” side effect of propecia, several have reported it here. Anxiety and panic attacks have not been reported.
Update December 2010: Merck has officially added depression to the list of possible side effects of Propecia.
Subj: Generic Propecia?
Date: 6/15/2005
I have been taking Propecia for 6 years now and I think it has definitely slowed down my hair loss. Of course the problem with it is that it is rather expensive. I’ve seen generic versions of Propecia such as Finpecia. They claim to have the same active ingredient of finasteride (1mg), but they are manufactured in India. How safe is it to buy and use something like this? Is it even legal to do such a thing?
Russell
AskDocWeb: Propecia is still covered by patent so generic Propecia is illegal in the USA. Remember, in order to buy an illegal drug you have to do business with a drug dealer. And that is usually a bad idea.
Subj: Is generic propecia for real?
Date: 6/16/2005
I was wondering if the websites selling generic propecia are for real? I was looking at a website (URL removed) and they say they have a physician who can give you a prescription online. Is that legal?
Tim
AskDocWeb: First, generic Propecia is illegal in the United States. Other drugs can legally be purchased online if the physician lives in the U.S. and is prescribing through a U.S. pharmacy. However, several states have banned the online purchase of drugs in their state. Check with your attorney general to see if your state allows this.
Subj: Shedding with Propecia
Date: 6/17/2005
hi, I want to make a question to the doctor. I am using propecia in 9 months. When I started that it stopped completely my hair loss. It was amazing. But since month 6 I am shedding very much, like 30 hairs in the shower every day, and in the start of the treatment I shed like 3 or 4. I can see my hair since month 6 so bad, can see my scalp in the light, I can’t see that before. I am shedding very bad 3 months now every day. I don’t know what will happen if it don’t stop quickly. My question is, is this shed is a good sign and the medication is working and the hair will be good again? It’s strange because most users shed in the first months and then get the results, in my case was very different, I got the results first and after started shedding. What the doctor can tell me about that? Is there a possibility that my body is producing more levels of dht that the drug can’t lower enough right now to do something good for the hair? I am 25 years old. Please help me! If you can send me a email. Thanks,
Rafael
AskDocWeb: There are several possibilities here. First your body could be building up a resistance to the Propecia. Then again, you may be going through a period of unusual stress. Another possibility is that something else is going on. Have your doctor give you a physical and request that they check your PSA level. Be sure to tell them what prescription drugs you are taking, especially the Propecia.
Subj: Enlarged breasts with Propecia
Date: 6/18/2005
Hi, There is male pattern baldness in my family so I purchased propecia from an online UK provider. I thought I would use it as prevention. After a month of taking it, I have very tender and enlarged breasts, which are quite painful and very tender. What might this mean. Should I stop taking it as a preventative? Thanks
Daniel
AskDocWeb: For a small percentage of men, this is a side effect of Propecia. Unfortunately, it means that you will probably have to quit it. It’s either breasts or baldness, which do you prefer?
Subj: Hair loss at temples
Date: 6/20/2005
I began using Propecia about a year ago to prevent hair loss (almost every guy in my family is bald). I am noticing thinning of the hair at my temples and I understand that Propecia has not been shown to solve this problem. Would Procerin or some other medication help me with this situation? I am not experiencing any side effects and the Propecia seems to be working well everywhere else. Thanks!
Nizar
AskDocWeb: A few men have reported success with using Procerin for the hairline but not enough to recommend it for that. Read more feedback.
