Subj: Propecia and mood swings
Date: 6/20/2005
My husband has been taking Propecia for almost a year. His hair looks great but he has been having severe mood swings and a problem with anger management. I feel there’s a link between this and taking the drug.

Subj: Looking for answers
Date: 6/21/2005
I have experienced hairloss for about five years now (vertex and frontal hairloss). I’ve been using a combination of propecia and minoxidil 5% for about 2 years now. However, I am still experiencing daily shedding and considerable hair fallout in the shower. My overall hair is definitely thinning, so I am skeptical as to whether the propecia and minoxidil is in fact working or not. But, I’m afraid to discontinue the medication for fear of increased fallout. I have searched through numerous message boards, but have not found an answer. Does my genetic predisposition not allow for propecia and minoxidil to work? Does my body develop much more DHT than the propecia can block? Are there any other alternatives? Looking for answers…

does it work?

AskDocWeb: Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place. Sounds like you are losing your hair any way you go. Okay, here is something to try. First, quantify your hair loss. Put a notebook and roll of tape next to your bed. Every morning, stick a one foot strip of tape across the center of your pillow. Pull it off and count the number of hairs it picks up and record that in the notebook with the date. This is not going to be exact but over time you will get an idea of your current hair loss. A month after starting your record, discontinue one of the hair loss products and record the results over the following month. If at the end of that time you are losing more hair, then you can start that product again. If your hair loss remains about the same then you know that you have been wasting your money on that product.

To get an answer to the question about your genetic predisposition, you would need to explored that with your doctor.

Subj: Changing from Rogaine to Finasteride
Date: 6/22/2005
I used Rogaine(5ml) for about 6 months stopped, then immediately switched to Finasteride(cipla) which I’ve been using now for about 6 months. I’m just starting to experience some serious shedding, 6 months into the Finasteride regimen. I think this is a late stage for shedding… Do you think my immediate switch from Rogaine to Finasteride is causing this shedding at such a late stage? Also, do you know if there is any permanent damage that I caused because of the abrupt switch? Regards

Jon

AskDocWeb: No, we can’t think of any damage that would be caused by an abrupt switch from Rogaine to Finasteride. Using a counterfeit Finasteride would cause a problem like yours. Make sure the Finasteride is the real thing.

Subj: Itch like crazy
Date: 6/22/2005
I have been taking propecia for 4 months and my skin, hands, crotch itch like crazy. Is this a side effect? I also take clexia every day with propecia. Thank you,

J

AskDocWeb: Itching was not listed side effect. Sounds like you need to seek the advice of a dermatologist.

Subj: Sudden impotence
Date: 6/23/2005
I have been off of propecia for 2 weeks now after experiencing sudden impotence. I can get an erection, but it’s hard to hold during sex and often goes limp. So far no improvement. I also experienced dizziness and lower back pains and a host of other problems. I am crossing my fingers that this is not a long term problem as I am still in my 20s.

Subj: Strange stuff in semen
Date: 6/25/2005
I’ve been taking propecia for 8 months. I’ve noticed less hair loss in the shower but still thinning on the crown. Also, I’ve noticed some gel like texture in my semen in the past few months, is this one of the side effects and should I be concerned?

Frank

Askdocweb You should be examined by your physician, since this is abnormal for any male.

Subj: Propheshia
Date: 6/25/2005
I have been using propecia from Mexico, b/c its half the price down there. The pills are labeled “Propheshia”, b/c they are in Spanish. My hair loss has been gradual for the first 6 months on the product, but these last two months have been severely drastic. I am very worried I will lose all my hair soon. Should I look into using the US version of it before quitting propecia?

Lane

AskDocWeb: Yes, use the U.S. version for 3 months before deciding.

Subj: Finopecia
Date: 6/25/2005
My fiance has just started taking finopecia. What are the side effects? Would it cause any problem for having baby after marriage or would it affect our sexual relation?

Mahnaz

Askdocweb We have never heard of that product. While it could be a new one, we suggest you check to see if it is a scam.

Subj: How long do side effects last?
Date: 6/27/2005
I would like to know, if the side effects appear, stopping the taking of Propecia, does this symptoms (side effects) disappear, and for how long I can continue taking my medicine? Please if you can answer me? Thank you in advance,

Rukije

AskDocWeb: Some men take it for years. Everyone is different as far as how long the side effects stay in the system. The manufacturer says that symptoms stop within a year of discontinuing.

Subj: Low budget Propecia
Date: 6/27/2005
My budget will only allow me to take propecia four times a week, will it still work? I have some hair and lots of fuzz, is it to late to take propecia?

Curtis

AskDocWeb: No, it’s not too late to take Propecia now. It will work, but less efficiently.

Subj: Cut the crap
Date: 6/30/2005
Okay, first of all, I was like the rest of the people here who came online to find a solution to their hairloss problem. After reading through almost every forum I’ve come to the conclusion the side effects of the drug…are at least in 33% of the people who try it. Not 2%. Everybody convinced me to take it and that the side effects were rare. Well… I feel like less of a man now than I would’ve had I been bald. My libido has gone to hell. I feel numb from the waist down. My girlfriend who used to turn me on like anything feels like just another guy to me now. I don’t know what the drugs done to me and it’s not a damn placebo effect either. The people at Merck should cut the crap and carry out better clinical trials than they have cause the facts are all !@#$ed.

Subj: Tender sore testicles
Date: 7/1/2005
I recently just started taking propecia and it has been only 5 days but I have started to feel some tenderness or soreness if you will in my testicles. Does this ever go away. Its not extreme pain but needless to say it is uncomfortable. Also how much shedding should I expect and will this grow back if I decide to stop taking propecia because of the soreness.

Bobby

AskDocWeb: With your testicular pain and discomfort, we suggest you talk to your physician about this right away and discontinue the propecia until you do. Since you have only been taking Propecia for a few days, it has not been in your system long enough to have any influence on your hair loss. Discontinuing it is not likely to do anything to your hair.

Subj: Long term damage from Propecia
Date: 7/5/2005
I had a great hairloss problem since 18. I also was very sexually active and quite horny individual up to the age of 20. I found out about finasteride(propecia) and its potentials in an endocrinology meeting in which we were basically told that the depth of its side effects was really unknown since they only knew at that point that the substance would permanently inactivate 5-alpha reductace and would cause amongst other symptoms a series of hepatic inflammatory changes. Off course I was so desperate to try this new drug to improve my deteriorating hair condition that I didn’t really take into account potential side effects.

After 2 months of usage, I got great results on my hair, yet 6 years later and at the age of 26 I cannot recall a single spontaneous or morning erection, my genitalia have shrunk and my sex life has been destroyed irreversibly. Recently and after having been tested for any possible reason for this sudden impotence I found out that the number of dht receptors throughout my body was minimal and that was the cause of all my problems. It seems however that there is no scientific treatment available.

Yet the problem is that the drug really did a nasty job. Since I was ok around 6 months after dropping it, I never really understood how the adverse side effects rebounded since I never ever used anything else to combat hair loss. If you want my advice, don’t risk your sex life for anything.

Subj: Heartburn
Date: 7/5/2005
I’m 25 and my hairline is receeding, I thought id give procerin a bash, I’m on my 3rd week and nothing as of yet except heartburn for the first week.

Martin

AskDocWeb: It takes alot longer than three weeks to see progress, be patient.

Subj: Strength and muscle growth decrease with Propecia
Date: 7/6/2005
I have been taking propecia for 3, 4 weeks and even though I do not mind the loss of libido, I feel my body strength and muscle growth have decrease. I have been working out at the gym for 2 months and after I started taking Propecia, my muscles stop growing and my level of energy is really down. Any correlaction?

Albert

AskDocWeb: A few others have asked about this and it is beginning to seem as if there may be a connection. We would like to hear from anyone else that has experienced this.

Subj: Propecia stopped working
Date: 7/6/2005
I’m 32 and have been taking Propecia for about 2 1/2 years now, and it has really been great as far as growing my hair back. My doctor has been having me take blood tests every now and then to check my testosterone levels. Recently, my bloodwork indicated that certain types of testosterone (total and something else, but not PSA) are about 40% higher than the normal upper limit. She said that means I was losing my hair because of lower than normal levels, and that now Propecia is making it high. It sounds odd to me, as everything I have read about Propecia says the opposite. I am not taking anything else that would increase testosterone, so what else could it be? Any ideas?

Yusuf

AskDocWeb: It sounds like your body may be developing a resistance to the drug. If that happens, there is not much you can do about it other than to start looking for something else. Read more feedback.
