Subj: Pressure on testicles
Date: 8/5/2005
I have noticed a little drop in libido but still have no problem gettin an erection. My only real side effect just happened 3 months into it. I have light pressure on my testicles. Is that something that will go away in time? I know when you continue to take Propecia a lot of side effects go away, what about this one?
Scott
AskDocWeb: Any feeling of pressure in or on your testicles should not be ignored. You had better see your doctor.
Subj: Propecia: swollen breast and tinnitus
Date: 8/11/2005
Hi! I have used Propecia for 1 year and noticed swollen breast and got a terrible tinnitus. My nose and throat are very soar too, and it feels that I’m speaking in a box and I have problem to understanding speech from other people. Is this Propecia that have done this and if so what should I do to get it away (my tinnitus and hearing are really bad now).
-AN!
AskDocWeb: If anyone else gets these symptoms, please don’t wait so long to report them to your doctor. Propecia has done this to others.
Subj: Propecia and conceiving
Date: 8/15/2005
My doctor advised me to take propecia until three months before I plan for a child. If I start taking propecia now and discontinue taking it for 3-6 months few years from now when I plan for my child, will I lose all the hair that grew during that period. That being the case will it be better if I take it after my wife gets pregnant?
Suresh
AskDocWeb: Yes, and we would go an extra step for safety by waiting until after the child is born.
Subj: Propecia and liver
Date: 8/15/2005
I am scared to know the side effects of propecia on liver. What is the effect of propecia on liver and the body in general?
Suresh
AskDocWeb: If you currently have any liver disease or problems, it is possible that you can still take Propecia but make sure you tell your doctor. You may need a lower dose or special monitoring during therapy.
Subj: Propecia, alcohol and drowsiness
Date: 8/18/2005
Can propecia cause drowsiness specifically during the consumption of alcoholic beverages? Thank you,
Anthony
AskDocWeb: Alcohol causes drowsiness, not propecia.
Subj: Propecia finasteride
Date: 8/19/2005
I used finasteride for about a week and noticed slight breast enlargement on one side. I stopped it right away. Will it go away? And what do I need to do? Thank you very much.
Aaron
AskDocWeb: There is nothing you can do about it except stop taking Finasteride.
Subj: Long term use of Propecia
8/22/2005
I’ve used Proscar for 10 years because it works. I was told 10 years ago that I if I stop, I can safely (get) my wife pregnant. However, do you know of any studies that show men can stop even after 10 years — and still have a healthy baby?
John
AskDocWeb: There are no long-term use studies in yet, but yes your wife can become pregnant safely according the manufacturer.
Subj: Growth on penis
8/25/2005
I have been taking propecia for about three years and the results have been very positive (new hair growth). I recently have noticed a small cist on my penis near the head. Could this be caused by propecia or is this something that I should be concerned about??
John
AskDocWeb: This could be a penile wart or something else. In any case, have it examined by your physician.
Subj: Propecia and birth defects
8/27/2005
There is a note regarding women handling tablets “could cause birth defects”. What about the men taking it, can they pass birth defects on to babies?
Blair
AskDocWeb: No, not according to the manufacturer.
Subj: Propecia cost
8/27/2005
I’ve been using Propecia for 2 years and can say that it has definitely worked for me. However, this has come at a cost. I’ve suffered a huge loss of libido, a significant decrease in ejaculate, and worst of all, I ejaculate much sooner than normal (ie. I don’t last anywhere near as long as I used to).
James
Subj: Propecia and pregnancy
8/27/2005
I stopped taking propecia when my wife and I decided to have another baby. She is now pregnant, and I am concerned about propecia in my semen coming into contact with the fetus. What are your thoughts?
Joe
AskDocWeb: That you should not worry, things will most likely be just fine.
Subj: Propecia and sex drive
9/1/2005
I have been taking propecia for over 2 years now. My hair loss slowed dramatically, but so did my sex drive.
Tim
Subj: Propecia hair loss
9/2/2005
If I take this drug for 3 months, will my hair continue to thin for the 3 months? If so do you think that any thinning that had occurred would “go back” to its thickness prior to the three month period? ( I realize its a difficult question and a definite answer, if there is one, probably depends on the individual themselves).
Adam
AskDocWeb: If Propecia works for you, hair loss will decrease slowly over a period of several months. According to the manufacturer it can take up to a year to see results. If you discontinue use, you will gradually loose the hair that you would have lost anyway over the following twelve months.
Subj: Tingling sensation with Procerin
Date: 9/5/2005
These may be a silly questions but I’ve been taking Procerin for almost two months now. Ever since taking it I have had a tingling sensation around my hairline where it is thinning. Is the tingling sensation a good thing? I have noticed very small light hairs growing there where it hasn’t in a while. Will the light hairs thicken and gain my normal brown hair color or will they stay small and light? Thanks for having such a great website.
Jeff
AskDocWeb: Yes, the tingling sensation does seem to be a positive sign. Several men have reported having this sensation along with new hair growth. Some have reported that their new light hairs were darkening.
Subj: Dry mouth with Propecia
Date: 9/7/2005
My husband has been taking Propecia for well over 8 months. He has had good results. Recently he has developed a dry mouth and throat. He will have it checked out at his yearly physical in 2 weeks. I’m wondering if the dry mouth could be related to the medication. Thanks.
Chris
AskDocWeb: A dry mouth and/or throat is not in the “official” list of symptoms for Propecia. Several men have reported dry skin but you are the first to raise this possibility.
Subj: Propecia
Date: 9/7/2005
What are the Benefits of Propecia? Please tell me in details.
Roger
AskDocWeb: It slows hair loss and causes the growth of new hair for most men.
Subj: Sinus congestion
Date: 9/9/2005
Has there been any evidence that taking propecia can cause sinus congestion?
Scott
AskDocWeb: None.
Subj: Want to have children
Date: 9/11/2005
Hi, my name is Rodney. I’m a 40 year old healthy male. I have been looking around the internet to see if other people have my side effects. I’ve been taking Propecia for about 2.5 years and often suffer from weak erections and definite decrease in ejaculate. It also appears very clear and thin, almost watery. I noticed Merck claims it occurs in 0.8 pct. Judging from this website alone, I don’t believe we all fall into that small percentile. I want to have children soon. Do I have to stop taking this drug so I can provide more semen? I have had success with this drug in growing and stopping hair loss, though. What are my alternatives?
Rodney
AskDocWeb: Judging by the feedback, it may take a year or year and a half for the side effects to leave. Minoxidil and Procerin seem to be good alternatives.
Subj: Erection help
Date: 9/12/2005
Hello, I have been using Propecia for the last 20 months and have noticed moderate results (my hair falling has reduced greatly). About 4.5 months ago I also started Rogaine and the results have been almost drastic. My hair thickened a lot. I have still continued using propecia during this time as well. Unfortunately, it appears that the Propecia has completely reduced my libido and I am unable to maintain an erection during intercourse. But I am still able to have an erection during masturbation and ejaculate during that time. It is only during actual sex that I am impotent and unable to achieve and maintain a full erection.
Is it okay for me to stop the propecia and just continue the rogaine? Is rogaine as good as propecia?
Charlie
AskDocWeb: Rogaine is not as effective as Propecia but getting rid of the erectile dysfunction is often more important than a little hair loss.

I am 27 and have been gradually losing my hair for several years. I have considered starting use of propecia, but I am scared to death of the sexual side effects. Like most men in their 20’s, I have a tremendous sex drive and sex is very important to me. My doctor has told me that the side effects are rare, consistent with the less than 2 percent reported by Merck, but after doing my own research, I am still worried. If I experience the side effects and discontinue use, will my hair loss be more severe than it was before starting the drug, or will I only lose the hair that I regrew and continue to lose hair at the same rate?
Also, my hair loss is only on my forehead (receding hair line). Does Rogaine work on this area? I’ve heard that rogaine only works on the top of the head.
Brian
AskDocWeb: We have strong doubts about the accuracy of the 2 percent figure published by Merck. If you discontinue use you may go through a period of increased hair loss for a few months but it will gradually slow to the same rate as before. There is currently nothing we can recommend to help with a receding hairline. Read more feedback.
