Subj: Shedding like crazy
Date: 9/14/2005
I have been using propecia for 3-4 days and I’m shedding like crazy. I know for sure it is not in my head cause I have constantly put my hands through my hair ever since I noticed my hair loss, it is kind of ridiculous, so is this increased hair loss. After the second day I counted 30 hairs that fell out, from shaking my hair and running my hands through it. Before the most I ever had was like five- ten at a time. Also before I started typing at least 10 hairs fell out, and this is after washing it a couple hours ago. Does this sound normal, it just seems like a serious acceleration in hair loss.
Z
AskDocWeb: Yes, it goes through stages, shedding is the first one, be patient. Also note that this product doesn’t work well for everyone. If the shedding lasts more than 4 or 5 weeks, we would discontinue however this seems to be pretty common.

My boyfriend is considering taking propecia, but we are planning to start a family in the spring. Is there any increased risk of birth defects in babies fathered by men on propecia?
Camille
AskDocWeb: There is a risk to the male fetus only if a woman takes it, also a woman is not to even handle the medication.

Have there been any reports of Propecia causing problems with the heart and syncope due to alpha blocker responding to body? Took propecia for the past 6 months. Had four episodes of passing out momentarily then coming back to. Doctor found bundle branch block and advised heart muscle had been weakened. As a result I now have a pacemaker. I’m 35 years old and was healthy with no medical conditions or risk factors to such heart ailments previously. Checking to see if propecia could cause the heart to slow down and lose muscle. Of course I’ve quit taking Propecia.
Joe
AskDocWeb: We have had no reports that would suggest Propecia could cause any heart problems.

I was taking propecia because I had a hard time remembering to use rogaine twice a day. I experienced really bad mood swings and had suicidal feelings quite frequently. I also had a very hard time getting an erection while on the medication. After stopping the pills, my mood improved and I am feeling normal again. Looks like I’ll have to go back to rogaine.

Does propecia cause overall increase in hair growth like back chest hair. I have undergone laser hair removal for my back. Will that come back?
Rick
AskDocWeb: It is highly unlikely that Propecia would cause the growth of body hair. However, the laser hair removal is a different story. In a small percentage of cases (0.6%), the process of laser hair removal seems to act as a stimulant for hair growth. That means you have a 99.4% chance that the hair will not return.

Hi. I’m a healthy (at least before) 26 years old, European guy. I took propecia in 2000, for 4 months aprox…then my breast grow a bit, so I quit Propecia and everything went normal again. 5 years from that, I started to took Propecia again, and after 4 months of taking it, I cannot have an erection…or I lose it in a few minutes… My balls are also hurting me a lot. I quit Propecia 5 days ago and this week is for sure the worst of my life… I need an advice please…Thanks,
Martin
AskDocWeb: Erectile dysfunction has been reported by other users. With your testicle pain hurting a lot you better seek your physicians advice. Make an appointment as soon as possible to discuss your erectile dysfunction as well as the testicular pain.

I just came from a consultation with the doctor about my hair loss concern. The dr. then recommended the use of Propecia or the Finasteride. When I got home I immediately took 1 mf tablet and just for curiosity I browse in the Internet to check for the possible side effects or user feedback. Then I found out that the possible effects are so alarming, so I decided not to take the medicine anymore. Am I going to experience anything or problem after taking 1 tablet of propecia and discontinued taking it? Thank you very much! More power.
MJ
AskDocWeb: No, you shouldn’t see any side effects from taking just one pill. There wasn’t enough Propecia in your body to build up any side effects.
Subj: Propecia infertility?
Date: 9/25/2005
Is it true that propecia could lead to infertility in men?
Jason
AskDocWeb: It can decrease the amount of ejaculate and cause impotence but infertility has not been listed.

Hi, I’ve been on propecia for 7 months now with pretty good results but am wondering does it cause muscle loss? Like if I start bodybuilding will I gain less then a man who’s not on propecia?
Dave
AskDocWeb: The mainstream answer is no but we are taking a closer look at this possibility. If you know of anyone who has first hand experience with this tell them this website is a good place to share their results.

Hi, I am 19 years old, and I began noticing my hair falling out and receding about 5 months ago. I’ve been on propecia for a little over a month. My dad has thin hair and my uncle on my mom’s side is a class 5 norwood. My hair has changed alot in those past 5 months, although it’s not noticeable to others yet. I was wondering if the degree of baldness I was destined to have affects how well propecia will work for me. I do not know what that is, but if I were destined to be pretty bald, but still had alot of hair when I started propecia, do I have a chance of keeping it? I am also using the laser comb and viviscal. Thanks,
Justin
AskDocWeb: With the use of Propecia, it is possible to delay whatever degree of baldness you would have experienced. Just remember that it doesn’t work for everyone and some have problems with side effects.
Subj: Short-tempered and ED with Propecia

I’ve been taking propecia for a month, and I’ve noticed feeling more agitated/short-tempered. I’m also having difficulty getting an erection. Are either of these side effects normal, and do they go away?? I’m also taking Lexapro for anxiety. Could it be a bad mix?
Mark
AskDocWeb: A couple of people have reported problems with anger, but it is not listed as a side effect that is given out by the manufacturer. Erectile dysfunction is listed as a side effect. The Lexapro wouldn’t cause these symptoms.
Subj: Another short temper
Date: 10/8/2005
My husband started taking propecia (one tablet daily) about a month ago, and in the last week he has been having a weird symptom. He’s been feeling particularly angry and irritable, a semi-depressed, short-fused “ready to explode” feeling, without any real cause, which is very unlike him. I realize that his mood is based on many factors, but I do feel that these symptoms are being caused by the drug. My question is…can propecia be causing them, and if so will it go away? Thanks so much.
Karen
AskDocWeb: There have been a few reports of people having a short temper, anger, and agitation. If it is caused by the Propecia then it won’t go away as long as he is still on the drug. There could also be another underlying problem going on. See if he is open to discussing the problems with you, it might make him feel better if he knows you understand.
Subj: Avodart
Date: 10/13/2004
I have been using Propecia for 3 years and was very happy with the results and suffered no side effects, but in the last few months I feel that it isn’t working as well as it was, so I am going to switch to Avodart. Is it okay to switch straight over from one to the other or should I let the Propecia get out of my system first and, if so, how long should I wait?
Keith
AskDocWeb: The package insert for patient information is not clear on this but Avodart should not be used with any other DHT inhibitors so you need to stop the Propecia before starting Avodart. The elimination rate of Propecia from the body decreases with age. To be on the safe side, we would wait 72 hours after discontinuing Propecia before starting the Avodart.
Avodart seems to have much the same sexual side effects as Propecia but it stays in your system much longer. Where the half-life of Propecia is measured in hours, the half-life of Avodart is 5 weeks.
Please note that Avodart affects the results of PSA and prostate cancer tests. The total serum PSA concentration is reduced by approximately 50% following 6 months of treatment with Avodart. Your doctor will need to establish a new baseline value to assess potential cancer-related changes in PSA. Digital rectal examinations and other evaluations for prostate cancer should be performed on patients with BPH prior to Avodart use and periodically thereafter.
Subj: How long to see results

I have been taking finasteride 1mg for three months but not seen any improvement in hair growth till what period should I continue will it work if I take for a long time?
Khan
AskDocWeb: The manufacturer says to try it for a year. We say that if you haven’t seen results by your 6th month, you are not likely to see any. Read more feedback.
