Subj: Incredible results
Date: 10/18/2004
Hello.Since I have used Propecia in the last 12 months I have seen incredible results. All my friends and family have seen a positive difference. I am a little worried about the sexual side effects I been hearing and actually feeling. Doesn’t seem that my Libido gets as hard as it use to. I don’t get the sensations that I did before. Does Procerin have any side effects like Propecia? Is it just as effective? Thanks,

Chris

AskDocWeb: Procerin is not as effective but then it doesn’t have sexual side effects either. That is what makes it an attractive alternative to Propecia.

Subj: Afraid of hair loss

How long for propecia to fully leave the body after stopping its use? I’ve been on it for almost 5 years and my libido is non existent, and have erection problems. Should I stop it for a week or 2? I am afraid of losing my hair and all the 5 years of work if you know what I mean. Thoughts?

Gary

AskDocWeb: Discontinuing use for only a few days will do nothing for your libido. After five years of using Propecia your libido may take several months to return after you discontinue use. You will certainly lose the hair that resulted from the drug but, it is up to you to decide what is more important to you, sexual function or your hair. There are many compromises in life and this is one of them.

Subj: Propecia for enlarged prostate
Date: 10/24/2004
I have taken Propecia, 5 mg., for a mildly enlarged prostate for a few years now. I haven’t seen much, if any, improvement in hair loss. Lately, however, I have experienced a noticeable fall-off in libido. My question: Is 5 mg. too high a dose for any hair-loss benefit, and are the side effects cumulative over time?

Fred

AskDocWeb: If you haven’t seen any improvement by now, it is not going to work for your hair loss. Unfortunately, the side effects will likely get worse with time.

After the dermatologist prescribed Propecia, my General Practitioner ordered me off the drug ASAP. She stated that the drug permanently alters the Y chromosome in male sperm and that if I were ever to have a male child the pregnancy would not be allowed to continue due to possible genetic deformations. Are there any recent studies backing this up or that are against this?

Kparla

AskDocWeb: If you are a woman then your doctor’s concern is valid. There are studies that show Propecia effects a developing male fetus with deformations of the sex organs.

Hi, I used propecia 4 years ago and got good result. I cut it and I lost my hair. Now I’m 49 year and I try again propecia but now regrowing hair is very slow. What is meaning? Thanks,

Kazem

AskDocWeb: It sounds like it is just not working as well as before. It depends on how long you have been back on Propecia too. It may take several months to see good results.

Hi, I use propecia 4 years ago that affected very well but I couldn’t find propecia in my country and I lost my hair after 2 years. I started treatment by propecia and cimetadin but it doesn’t work to me please answer me why?

Kazem

AskDocWeb: It will take several months to notice any progress. That is, if you are using the real thing. Some countries sell a counterfeit Propecia.

Subj: Propecia side effects
Date: 11/4/2005
I have been taking Propecia for about 3 years or so and it has worked well. I have never really had any side effects until I got my last 3 month supply. Since then I have developed small lumps in my breasts, swelling of the nipple, and once even a clear discharge. Both breasts are mildly sore as well. I know I am supposed to see my doctor, but before I do is there anything that could explain why only with this batch this has happened. I am going to switch pharmacies out of caution. Are these serious side effects or just temporary discomforts? I thought I would ask you first before the doctor because I am currently without insurance. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Rufus

AskDocWeb: It may not have anything to do with the batch but rather the amount of time you have been on it. Some men develop what is called a tolerance for it and at that point it either stops working or side effects start showing up. It is likely that you will no longer be able to take it without adverse effects.

Subj: Procerin with Propecia?
Date: 11/10/2005
I am taking Procerin and Propecia at the same time, but I take 2 pills of procerin instead of 3 which is recommended. Do you think this is safe taking both of these?

Ryan

AskDocWeb: Our biggest concern would be the possible sexual side effects of Propecia. Other than that you should be okay.

Subj: Propecia cost
Date: 11/10/2005
I’ve been taking Propecia for 2 1/2 years. As far as hair lose goes I’m comparing my hair line to my brother by looking at pictures of him that would be the same age as I am through these 2 1/2 years. He has lost most of his hair but is not completely bold. I still have most of my hair but have noticed a considerable change in my hair line, causing me to change how I part my hair (not quite a comb over yet). If the inevitable “is what it is” then I can accept the expensive loss to my pocket book and my hair. The harshest aspect of taking Propecia is the loss of sexual drive (Libido) and the almost none existence of ejaculate. Currently I’m noticing that it feels as if I’m going to Pee my pant’s. First I thought maybe I needed to go but when I stood over the Toilet, I didn’t need to go after all. This has been a nagging bummer. I’m 35 years old and not looking forward to diapers. If propecia is the cause then I will have to quit.

Greg

AskDocWeb: The cost of taking Propecia is high in terms of sexual side effects however, this sounds like something else may be going on. Better have this checked by your doctor.

I started taking it about a month a go and am already having erection problems. I feel like I can’t get it up at all. Stopped taking it.

Subj: Sexual side effects of Propecia
Date: 11/13/2005
Is there any information about the permanence of sexual side effects of Propecia? I’m concerned about long-term fertility problems and I’m skeptical of Merck’s claims that all side effects go away once usage is stopped (how would they know? Propecia hasn’t even been around for that long).

Michael

AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer all side effects disappear within a year in those who discontinue Propecia however, we share your skepticism. One ex-user reported here that it took them a year and a half to return to normal function.

Subj: Pain in testicles
Date: 11/13/2005
I had been taking propecia for about 3 years. I had developed pains in my testicles. Since stopping the propecia it has gone away. I was told that this was a side effect that was not mentioned. It is pretty scary that it reduces your sperm count.

Subj: Propecia without prescription?
Date: 11/15/2005
Hi, I have been taking propecia for over six months with good results, I’d say. I started in Taiwan and now in Romania – my home country. I’d like to know if I should not worry that all pharmacies in both countries sell propecia without prescription?

Calin

AskDocWeb: We think your concern is appropriate. Some countries may not require a prescription for this so we would check out who is manufacturing the product. Find out if they are legitimate. And read the ingredients on the package to make sure it contains Finasteride.

I’m wondering why there are so many reports about side-effects by users while the studies about propecia show that side-effects occur just rarely.

Nick

AskDocWeb: You have to remember that this whole website is about the side effects of health products. Most people find us in a search engine because they are concerned about side effects. We don’t hear from many of the people who have no problems or concerns.
On the other hand, a growing number of people believe that the side effects of Propecia have been seriously underreported.

Subj: Finasteride propecia
Date: 11/21/2005
I have been on Propecia (1 mg Finasteride) for over 4 years with no side effects. Some men I read about use Proscar. They advise taking the pill and cutting it in half or quarters. My concern is increased risk for side effects.

If you experience no side effects from 1mg., could you find yourself experiencing side effects upon increasing the dosage to 1.25mg or 2.5mg.? It would seem that if your going to experience the side effects from Finasteride, your would experience regardless if your taking 1mg., 1.25mg/ or 2.5mg. Would I be correct in this assumption?

Dean

AskDocWeb: The stronger the med the higher the chances of having side effects.

Subj: Propecia shedding
Date: 11/23/2005
Hi, I am 33 years old and I have suffered from alopecia form almost 7 years of my life. Although my prior hair loss was steady and not really significant, but after I turned 30 the hair loss started to be more and more evident. At first I used Rogaine and the loss stopped, but about 9 months ago I started shedding like crazy. Within just two months my bald areas were extremely visible, therefore I decided to give Porpecia a try, and well I can tell you that my hair loss stopped and my hair started to look thicker and fuller. A lot of hair both in the forehead and vertex area that was almost vellum sized started to re grow as normal hair. I even took some pictures of this, but suddenly after the 4 month on Propecia passed the shedding started again. I am now losing all the hair I had regained and it is just getting worst as time passes by. Has anyone experienced something similar? Will stop? Or should I stop with the treatment? Thanks in advance.

José

AskDocWeb: There isn’t enough information available on this subject to know if it will stop or not. It is certainly worth trying for another month to see if the shedding stops. If you stop using the product, your hair loss will only become worse. Let us know what happens. Read more feedback.
