Subj: Taking the plunge

Subj: Minoxidil
Date: 12/6/2005
I started taking Minoxidil 2% a few days ago. I was a bit reluctant to do this. Will I lose any more hair than I would have if I stop use? Does Minoxodil “hold in” hairs that would have fallen out, or does it strictly stimulate new hair growth?
I still have a pretty decent head of hair – what is the best product that can halt my present rapid hair loss (about a dozen at each shower in the last couple of months) (please don’t print my email address) Thanks!

Alle

AskDocWeb: If it works for you, Minoxidil both prevents hair loss and causes the growth of new hair. If you discontinue use, you lose both the hair that you would have lost plus any new growth.

It is our policy to keep all email addresses confidential, that means we don’t print them.

Subj: Inflammation or tendinitis?
Date: 12/7/2005
I was wondering if you have ever herd of propecia being linked to inflammation or tendinitis problems?

Klen

AskDocWeb: No.

Subj: Hair loss Propecia
Date: 12/9/2005
I have been taking propecia since the summer of 1998 (age 17). I knew I needed to take it when I developed the nickname “Q Ball.” Well the hair in my drain has ceased and I have a full head of hair. (I never completely lost my hair before, but it was so thin that the scalp could be seen easily regardless of the length of my hair). The medicine works so well, that when I went for a regular physical, my physician asked me why I was taking it. My response, “I only do b/c it works.” Notably, every male in my family, all the way up the tree-on both sides- is or was bald and lost their hair in their teens or early 20’s. I am the exception.

Moreover, I haven’t had any side effects with this medication. I have since convinced two of my friends to take it. One of them started a year ago and he has since gotten rid of his come over. The other just started and I am looking forward to the results.

Subj: Finpecia
Date: 12/10/2005
Do you know or have you heard anything about finpecia, I am taking from last 10 days but my hair seems to be losing is this fenpecia (cipla company India) make is useful are weather I should stop taking it?

Ronak

AskDocWeb: Finpecia seems to be a counterfeit of Propecia and we do not support the use of counterfeit drugs.

Subj: Shen Min
Date: 12/12/2005
I am 20 and my hairline has recently started to receed. It is now getting to the point where it seems to be speeding up and soon will become visible. As I’m only 20 I am quite worried about the situation and have recently been looking at products although I have not taken any. The one that caught my attention was shen min DHT blocker is this proven to work? Is there likely to be a shedding phase? Any information would be most helpful. Thank you,

Aussie

AskDocWeb: Update answer 5/25/07: Shen Min is not recommended.

Subj: Under age use of Propecia
Date: 12/14/2005
Why is it that guys under the age of 18 shouldn’t take propecia? Has propecia been known to cause gray hair?

Steph

AskDocWeb: No, Propecia doesn’t cause gray hair. Doctors don’t recommend this drug for anyone under the age of 18 because it was never intended for that age group. No research has been conducted into what would happen or the side effects for underage users.

Subj: Athletic performance
Date: 12/15/2005
Will taking propecia limit or hinder athletic performance?

George

AskDocWeb: Officially no, this was not something that was reported by the manufacturer but people are beginning to questioned this. If it hinders your athletic performance, please let us know.

Subj: Propecia sterility?
Date: 12/17/2005
Hi…I was on Propecia for a year. I noticed a decreased volume of ejaculate and the fact that it wasn’t as thick and white as it usually was before taking the drug. I recently stopped taking Propecia (3 weeks) and would like to know when my sperm quality will go back to normal. Is there a chance that it causes sterility? Is there a chance that the side effects are irreversible? Please respond.

Propecia Scared

AskDocWeb: The manufacturer says that all side effects disappear but no longer say how long it takes to get back to normal (they used to say up to a year). We have not heard of anyone becoming sterile but there have been reports of it causing erectile dysfunction that lasts up to a year and a half.

Subj: Hair loss Propecia
Date: 12/19/2005
I have been taking propecia for about 7 years. It did work well. I did not see any new growth, but I did stop my hair from falling out. My libido was decreased a little bit but what gets me is that this happened over a long gradual period. About 6 months ago, I noticed penis shrinkage and testicle swelling. Some people have stopped the meds and never regained their libido and who knows what this stuff will do to your heart, kidneys, liver, testicles, pancreas, etc… The manufacturer should state that you may experience sexual side effects, and those side effects may never go away.

Subj: Hairline, ED and acne
Date: 12/20/2005
I am twenty five years old and have been taking propecia for about four months. I was thinning in the front, (receding hairline), and was wondering if the drug is affective in these areas. Also, I have been having a hard time getting an erection, and started getting mild acne. Is this normal, and will it eventually subside? For now, I am going to get off of the drug, will I start losing more hair since I am stopping? Would love your input! Sincerely,

Joel

AskDocWeb: Sorry, propecia doesn’t work on the hair line, just on the top of the head, and it is known to cause erectile dysfunction. For many, it seems to be a choice between having hair and no sexual function or no hair with great sex – which is more important to you? Your hair loss will resume when you discontinue Propecia.

Subj: Propecia, ingrown hairs, welts and pain
Date: 12/20/2005
My son has been taken propecia and has experienced hair growth in other areas than on top of his head, ingrown hairs and welts on his face, and topical pains on top of his head. Has anyone else had those side effects? Has anyone else experienced these pains? Thanks,

Karan

AskDocWeb: Because of the combination of the welts on his face and topical scalp pains, your son should seek a physician’s help immediately. It sounds like Propecia may not work for him.

Subj: Patches of hair loss
Date: 12/21/2005
Hi! Some questions from Sweden. I have been experiencing some loss of hair in the side-patches for about a year now. I am 23 years old. Would taking Propecia stop this, any chance of hair growing back? And if I take the medicine for say a year or two and then stop. Will all hair that would have fallen off, had I not taken Propecia, come off the following year? Merry Christmas!

Marcus

AskDocWeb: Propecia is not known to help when hair loss is in patches. If you stop taking Propecia you will lose all the hair you would have lost if you had not taken it.

Subj: Finpecia
Date: 12/21/2005
I’ve been taking finpecia ( which is finasteride in India )since 7 months without prescription. Does it lead to body hairloss?

Avinash

AskDocWeb: Since it’s made in India, we do not have any information on this product. We do not know what other countries are actually putting in their drugs.

Subj: Trying to conceive
Date: 12/22/2005
I have been taking propecia for around 4 years and have stopped taking it for over 6 months now as my wife and I are trying to conceive. It has been over 6 months now and we conceived within 2 months before. Can you tell me if any research has been conducted in this area? Kind regards,

Ben

AskDocWeb: We have yet to discover any research in this area. It would be helpful if you bookmark this website and return to let others know how you come out on this. A lot of others are concerned about conceiving when Propecia is involved.

Subj: Propecia really works
Date: 12/22/2005
I’ve been taking propecia for about a year. It’s really worked better than I had hoped. I’ve regrown a significant amount of hair and it’s stopped thinning. Believe me, I wish I could tell you this is a scam by the drug companies, but from my experience, it really does work. I just don’t worry about losing my hair now and I hope that one day there will be some gene-therapy to treat baldness. My sex life isn’t great, but it wasn’t before I started taking propecia. I also ride a bike, maybe that’s why. Either way, I must admit that taking propecia has done a lot to help my confidence and relieve the stress that came with loosing my hair at an early age.

Subj: Testicle pain after discontinuing Propecia
Date: 12/24/2005
Hi, I’m a 29 year old male. Around 2 years ago I started taking Propecia. Few days after starting Propecia, I noticed a significant reduction in libido, erectile dysfunction and pain in my testicles. I heard if I continued, the side effect would go away, so I continued but not every day (like 5 days a week). The side effects were reduced but never disappeared and since I was not sexually active, I decided to continue with it. The testicular pain was obviously because of Propecia, since whenever I would take it more frequently (every day) I have more pain. In few months I gained thicker and more hair.

After 1 year I decided to discontinue since the side effects were bothering me, especially the testicle pain. Also my testicles became larger. So I stopped it 9 months ago and the side effects were reduced but never went away! I still have testicular pain. I went to an urologist and he said nothing was wrong with me and he said sometimes they do not know what causes some pains in testicles, since they find everything normal.

Right now my libido is low; I frequently have testicular pain and problems with erection. My testicles are still larger. I never had this kind of problems before taking Propecia. I’m worried if this continues then I have ruined my life. By the way, the tests showed my testosterone was a little less that normal. All other things were normal. I also have less hair loss compared to before taking Propecia, although I’m not taking it anymore. Can anybody help me with this?

Cyrus

AskDocWeb: It would be helpful if you mark your calendar and return in six months to let us know how you are doing with this. One man reported that he still had side effects a year and a half after discontinuing Propecia. Read more feedback.
