Subj: Propecia for women?
Date: 2/11/2005
I am 43 years old and married. I have 3 children and my husband has had a vasectomy. I am not at risk for getting pregnant? What are my risks and side effects as a woman taking propecia?
Holly
AskDocWeb: The main concern about women taking this drug is the risk to a developing fetus. Although you don’t have that possibility, a study involving 137 postmenopausal women showed no benefit from using Propecia. On the other hand, a couple of women have written that they are getting good results with it.
Subj: Dramatic decrease in sex drive
Date: 2/11/2005
I started using propecia recently on the recommendation of my doctor. I read the side effects were rare (less than 2%),so started the medicine with a lot of optimism, hoping it will benefit me without getting side effects. Unfortunately, in less than 3 weeks, I experienced sexual side effects like lower libido, erection not as hard as before & dramatic decrease in sex drive. I’m 25 & sex drive is not something I’m willing to compromise on, so I’ve stopped taking the drug & don’t recommend it as I feel the chances of getting some kind of sexual side effect from this drug is inevitable, unlike what is documented. ROGAINE HERE I COME!

Subj: Pubic hair changes
Date: 2/12/2005
I am a male 23 years old and have been taking propecia for the last 2 years. It has helped me keep the hair I have and reduced my hair loss. However the left side of my pubic hair has been going white and almost 40% of the pubic hair only on the left side are white while the right side is pitch black. could this be a side affect of propecia?
I honestly would not be concerned if all the pubic hair was going white but it is happening only on the left side and was wondering if you know why this may be happening. Thanx.
Amrita
AskDocWeb: We’ve not heard of that happening to anyone else. The only thing we can think of is that someone may have a sneeky sense of humor. Make sure there is no bleach around before you go to sleep.
Subj: Propecia muscle loss?
Date: 2/13/2005
I have just been prescribed Propecia for my hair loss. I understand that this is basically a inhibitor for Dihydrotestosterone. I love to workout and enjoy the results I see. Will I see muscle loss with the use of propecia?
Scott
AskDocWeb: Others have voiced this concern but no one has reported any muscle loss from using Propecia.
Subj: Propecia vision changes
Date: 2/14/2005
Hi, just wondering if there’s been any reported connection between taking propecia and the occurrence of vitreous eye floaters? I’m 28 and have been on propecia for 4 and a half months and it seems to be working. However in the last couple of weeks have noticed a vitreous eye floater in my left eye (and possibly one in my right eye). I got them checked by an eye specialist and they are innocent but do affect my field of vision a bit.
Charles
AskDocWeb: We didn’t find any connection between floaters and Propecia.
Subj: Can’t give blood
Date: 2/15/2006
I went to give blood today and I was turned down because I am currently taking Propecia. The blood bank workers mentioned that it causes birth defects. If I continue to take Propecia will this affect my future children?
Brandon
AskDocWeb: Propecia is known to cause birth defects when taken by women but to date, there is no evidence of that problem when taken by men. If may be that they just don’t want to take ANY chances. They will likely allow you to give blood when you have been off of propecia for 30 days.
Subj: Propecia side effects

Subj: Hairline at temples
Date: 2/20/2006
Quick question. I’ve been on Propecia for 5 months but I’m still receding at my temples. This is the area I worry about most because I’m fine everywhere else. I just worry I’m going to have a receding hairline. Besides propecia “which doesn’t guarantee regrowth,” What can I take to regrow the hair I had at my temples? I have searched the web but have not found anything official. Thanks,
Dan
AskDocWeb: Sorry Dan, we are all still looking for that.
Subj: Procerin with Provillus
Date: 2/20/2006
Can I take Procerin with provillus? Thanx,
Mo
AskDocWeb: We suggest you begin by using only one product for hair loss. That way if there are any side effects you will know what to blame.
Subj: Advice
Date: 2/21/2006
What I can do after I read what Brayen and Steven say? Plz advice me,
Karin
AskDocWeb: At some point we will all have to accept hair loss as a part of life. In the mean time we just do the best we can with alternatives.
subj: Is Nopecia same as Propecia?
date: 2/21/2006
I was with doctor today and he ask me to take Propecia or the Egyption one ( Nopecia ) but I am really so worry of it and I don’t know what will happen to me if I take it…I just want to ask if I take it 3 months, only 3 months, it may have the side effect or does it need more than 3 months for it? And 3 months in good to gain my hair with use Nopecia with Rogaine? And the last question is the Nopecia is the same as Propecia? Thank you,
Sad
AskDocWeb: Some people have had side effects show up in just two or three weeks but others never have side effects. There is no way to tell ahead of time if you will have them or not. Sorry, but we don’t even try to keep up with all the drugs made in countries outside of the USA. There are just too many.
Subj: Body hair growth?
Date: 2/21/2006
Does Propecia cause more body hair growth?
Mike
AskDocWeb: No, Propecia does not seem to affect non-scalp body hair.
Subj: Affect on conception
Date: 2/21/2006
Do you have any research on Propecia and affecting conception? I see that it may affect amount of ejaculate…but do you have any other research on number of sperm and motility? Thanks.
Josy
AskDocWeb: Sorry, we don’t have any research on the number of sperm count or motility.
Subj: Propecia for diabetic?
Date: 2/22/2006
I am a Diabetic (TYPE II) can Propecia cause me problems. I am not overweight, I workout regularly – I am 44.
John
AskDocWeb: No problems with diabetes have been associated with Propecia.
Subj: Propecia stopped working
Date: 2/22/2006
I took propecia for several years with very good results. Then my hair slowly started to thin again, so I stop taking the drug about 2 years ago. Hair loss has been rapid since going off the drug. Would taking the drug again help to slow or even restore some of the hairloss? Thanks,
Joe
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may have developed a tolerance to it and it quit working for you. You probably will not see the same results once you begin again, but you can try it.
Subj: Internet chemist?
Date: 2/23/2006
Would it be possible for you to recommend an internet chemist that can be trusted, as I worry about being sold fake drugs.
Patrick
AskDocWeb: If you buy Propecia from a reputable source then you don’t have to worry about it being fake. While it may be tempting to save some money, you are dealing with your health. You could be buying the real thing and still find out that the product is well past the expiration date. We suggest you error on the side of safety and get it from your local pharmacy.
Subj: Hair loss becoming apparent
Date: 2/24/2006
I have been experiencing hair loss for a little over a year and a half. My dad takes propecia and said it worked great for him without the results, but he says he doesn’t think I really need it. I naturally have very full, thick hair, and up until recently the hair loss wasn’t noticeable to anyone but myself. However, now my scalp is getting easier to see in the back. One of the things that I think contributed to my hair loss was creatine, which I used on and off for over a year. The hair loss seemed to start about 4 months after I started using creatine. I have been to my dermatologist about perhaps getting a prescription for propecia, but both times he simply brushed me off saying that I just had dandruff which can cause temporary hair loss. I would like some advice as to what I should do, I grow more concerned about my hair loss every day and feel that the problem is now becoming apparent to the naked eye of everyone else.
Steve
AskDocWeb: Both the lack of vitamins and dandruff can cause hair loss, along with the stress in your life. You could begin to quantify your hair loss by counting the number of hairs a one-foot piece of tape picks up from your pillow each morning. Press the tape once across the center of the pillow, pull off and count the hairs. Keep track over time to get an average and to tell if your hair loss increases or decreases. If you start using a hair loss product, we recommend keeping this kind of record to track your results.
Subj: Poison
Date: 2/24/2006
GET AWAY FROM THIS POISON! SUE MERCK! This drug is pure hell, after taking it for 11 months I got sexual and other health side effects. Now, after 28 months off the drug I still have side effects and I’m scared to death that all this is permanent (hope not). STAY AWAY FROM THIS POISON!
Guillermo
Subj: Best substitute
Date: 2/25/2006
I’m 16 years old and already experiencing mild hairloss. I started taking propecia a few days ago and I’m already feeling the side effects. Would procerin be the next best substitute?
Ananomous
AskDocWeb: Yes, that is our opinion.
Subj: Rogaine tolerance
Date: 2/26/2006
I’m a 43 year old male. I have been using Rogaine for the past 13 years. Recently I have noticed an appreciable hair loss. I would like to try Propecia; however, I understand that Rogaine cessation is associated with increased hair loss. Can an individual develop a Rogaine tolerance? Do you recommend simultaneous Rogaine/Propecia? Thanks,
Tom
AskDocWeb: Yes, you can develop a tolerance to Rogaine. Propecia works for most men’s hair loss but we don’t recommend it because of the possible sexual side effects.
Subj: Inflamed prostate
Date: 2/28/2006
Is it possible that propecia can cause an inflammation of the prostate?…I had never had such a problem until I had taken propecia for about 1 month…Now, I have unexplained infection and an above normal PSA.
Vince
AskDocWeb: An above normal PSA reading is to be expected while on Propecia. That by itself is not necessarily an indication of a problem while taking this drug. Another drug called Proscar (which is 5 times the dosage of Propecia), that is used for reducing enlarged prostate. It seems more likely that this is a coincidence. The Propecia may actually be helping but you need to visit your doctor to find out. Read more feedback.
