Subj: Red blotches
Date: 2/28/2006
I tried taking Propecia for a couple of weeks. Slowly but surely, I developed red blotches all over my body. I don’t know if they would be considered hives. I stopped the medication and they went away within a couple of days. Is this an allergic reaction? The hives did not itch or bother me in any way, in fact I didn’t even know they were there unless I looked in the mirror. What are the chances that if I start taking Propecia again I will have the same reaction?
Solomon
AskDocWeb: Yes, this sounds like an allergic reaction. Chances are high that it would be worse if you begin taking Propecia again.
Subj: Propecia and Pregnancy
Date: 2/28/2006
My wife became pregnant after I had been on Propecia for 2 weeks. Is there any cause for alarm here?
James
AskDocWeb: Not unless she handled the pills herself or took them orally.
Subj: Widening part
Date: 3/2/2006
My hair part down the middle seems to have widened will propecea close that up and I have alot of short pointy hairs.
Johnny
AskDocWeb: There is a good chance that Propecia will help with that but watch out for sexual side effects.
Subj: After Propecia
Date: 3/2/2006
I have been taking this stuff for about a year and it is doing great but I didn’t take it for about 3 weeks and now I started back up will I lose all my hair? I started to lose some but nothing like it was before I started taking it so thanks for your time.
Chris
AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer, you will gradually loose the benefits (the hair) that Propecia provided over the 12 months after you stop taking it. Your normal hair loss will resume from that point on.
Subj: Symptoms of Celiac disease from Propecia?
Date: 3/3/2006
I have been on Propecia for 5-6 years. November 2004 I began having abdominal pain and mucus in my stools. I had every test ever created performed and everything was normal. The only thing my doctor found was that I met 1 of 2 criteria for Celiac’s disease and he wrote it up as the source of the problem. However, I recently met another person on Propecia. He’s been on it since 1998 and oddly enough, he has all sorts of gastrointestinal problems. I stopped taking Propecia when the abdominal pains started and after 1 month the pain and mucus was gone. I started back on Propecia the first week of January and now I’m back to the same symptoms again. Anyone else?
Jason
AskDocWeb: If anyone shares Jason’s experience please let us know. Celiac disease affects both adults and young children. It is a defect in the digestive system making digestion of the gluten of some grain foods. Those with Celiac disease may suffer from vomiting, diarrhea, muscle wasting, a swollen belly, and extreme fatigue. Most patients do well on a diet that is gluten-free, high-calorie, and high-protein. Replacing the wheat in your diet with rice and corn also help. Celiac disease is also referred to as nontropical sprue, gluten-induced enteropathy, and celiac sprue.
Subj: Pregnancy
Date: 3/5/2006
I am pregnant. My concern is that I got pregnant accidentally when my husband was still using Propecia. He has discontinued the use since we discovered the pregnancy but the possibility of side defects is scaring me.
Clara
AskDocWeb: There is no concern unless you have handled or taken the pills.
Subj: Loss of sex drive
Date: 3/7/2006
I have been taking Propecia for less than 2 months. I guess I haven’t been taking it long enough to notice any positive effects yet. However, I have definitely noticed a huge decrease in my sex drive. I see a few other people in here have had the same problem. I can still get erections but they are really hard to keep for very long, and not very hard. If this doesn’t ease up after 3 months then I’m going to quit taking Propecia because to me re-growing a little hair is not worth losing your sex life over. This sucks, anyone else experiencing the same thing?
Rick
AskDocWeb: Yes, others have experienced the same thing.
Subj: 6 months and Propecia is not working
Date: 3/7/2006
Hi, I’ve been taking Propecia exactly as described for six months now. I have experienced no side effects but my hair seems to be thinning more than ever. Should I continue with the treatment?
Danny
AskDocWeb: The drug company says to give it a year but we think that if it doesn’t work within six months, it’s not worth continuing.
Subj: No side effects
Date: 3/9/2006
I thought I was lucky until I noticed some thinning on the front of my scalp. I’ve been taking Propecia for 3 years without any side effects. I’m the only male out of my large family to be approaching 30 without a bald spot or a notable receding hairline.
Ron
Subj: Propecia and liver
Date: 3/10/2006
I noticed increased LFT’s after taking propecia. Can you comment on the effects on the liver. I too believe it effects sexual drive, but that is my opinion. I been taking it for about 9 months.
Dave
AskDocWeb: The patient information sheet for Propecia advises that caution should be used in the administration of this drug to patients with liver function abnormalities. Propecia is metabolized extensively in the liver so it is no surprise that it affects the liver function test.
Subj: Minoxidil and pregnancy
Date: 3/11/2006
I am a 30 years old male and experiencing rapid hair fall for last 2 years. I approached a clinic and they are recommending Minoxidil 12.5% + AA and Minoxidil 5% + MPG for 12 months for hair re-growth. We are planning for a baby this year. Please suggest whether I can go for this treatment having planned for a baby. Also, please advice how long do I have to use this medicine and what are the effects if I stop this suddenly after 12 months.
Mike
AskDocWeb: That sounds like the clinic in the UK that is experimenting with high dosage use of Minoxidil. You will want to talk to your family doctor first about using that high a dosage if you are planning a pregnancy. You should be aware that Minoxidil does not work for everyone but if it does work you should see results within four months. As with all hair loss products, when you discontinue use you lose the benefits.
Subj: Hair turning grey
Date: 3/15/2006
I am 24 year old male and I started taking propecia about 2 years ago. My hair loss has decreased and I have grown some more hair around the top region of my scalp where it was earlier thinning. Recently however I have been noticing that only the left side of my pubic hair is slowly turning grey. The right side is completely black but I have noticed an increasing amount of grey hair only on the left side. Could propecia be the reason for this and is there anything I can do to stop this?
Amrita
AskDocWeb: At your age this is unusual. There is no mention of hair color changes in the research we examined. The only way to find out if Propecia is causing this is to discontinue use for three to four months to see if the hair color returns.
Subj: Questions about Propecia Proscar
Date: 3/17/2006
Hi, Is there any difference between proscar & propecia? Where is the best place to buy it from? If you stop taking the medication does your hair fall out?
Paul
AskDocWeb: Proscar is five times as strong as Propecia. The safest place to buy Propecia is your local pharmacy. And yes, when you stop taking it you will lose any benefits (hair) over the following twelve months.
Subj: Propecia for women?
Date: 3/17/2006
Is Propecia safe for women? My mom is 72 and has hair loss. What can she take? Thanks,
Rose
AskDocWeb: Propecia is not safe for women in general because of the possibility of causing birth defects. But since your mom is 72 there is no concern about pregnancy but there are also no studies on the affect of Propecia in women in that age group. So far, sorry to say, the only solution seems to be wigs or hats.
Subj: It works
Date: 3/17/2006
I have been using Propecia for over 3 years now after researching it on the internet and talking to a very well recognized dermatologist. Well folks, the bottom line is it works! I am so confident in my new hair growth and noticed re-growth after 3 months and continued growth as time went on. More importantly no new hair fell out!! no more hairs on the pillow! I am in sales so confidence is so important in front in the public. Thanks Propecia! This is a god send. Try it!
Paul
Subj: Shedding phase?
Date: 3/20/2006
I have been taking Propecia for about 2 months now and I have notice more hair falling out then before. I was wondering is it common or is there a shedding phase when taking Propecia.
Maxim
AskDocWeb: Yes, we call it a shedding phase and although it is not officially recognized, it does seem to be common with hair loss products. According to feedback from users it will stop in about 4 to 6 weeks.
Subj: Any new hair loss products?
Date: 3/21/2006
My hair has grown using propecia, it’s been 4 years but worried about long term effects. Is anything else coming in the future.
Bill
AskDocWeb: As we see it, the most likely source of a new hair loss product (one that works for everyone) will be an offshoot of the gene mapping research now underway. Once we understand the genetic difference between hair follicles that grow hair and those that shut down, a new product will follow shortly.
Subj: Cutting Propecia pills in half
Date: 3/22/2006
I read in other literature (from UPenn) the 1 mg daily dosage of Propecia is excessively high. Over the past 2-3 months I’ve combined Propecia, Rogaine, and Revivogen (a natural topical solution). However, I’m using less than the prescribed doses of both Propecia and Rogaine. I cut a tablet of Propecia in two and take ~0.5 mg per day along with applying 1ml of Rogaine once per day at night. Is it critical I take the prescribed 1mg of Propecia per day? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Jim
AskDocWeb: We are wondering what kind of results you are getting. If you are cutting the Propecia tablets in half that reduces the possibility of side effects in you but increases the chances of contaminating a woman of child bearing age with the contents. You also reduce the effect the pill is suppose to have on you such as less hair growth and less chance of stopping hair loss. (Added 5/24/07) Please read the disclaimer page on Revivogen’s website. Read more feedback.
