Subj: Allergic reaction to Propecia?
Date: 4/20/2006
I was taking propecia every day for about 3 weeks. One day I woke up and my face felt rough and was red with some little whiteheads on it. My neck was also very red. I haven’t taken them in 4 days now and it is going away a little bit. Is this an allergic reaction? Should I stop taking propecia all together or will these effects go away? Can I slowly ween myself on them maybe like take half or every other day?
Geoff
AskDocWeb: It does sound like a reaction. Taking one every other day may be worth trying to find out if you can get some benefit without the reaction. It’s something you may want to talk to your doctor about, after he checks you out. If it is a true allergic reaction rather than a side effect you may not be able to use it at all.
Subj: Shedding
Date: 4/21/2006
I have been on Propecia for 15 days now. My hairline has receded somewhat dramatically since I started. I know “shedding” is normal, but is it normal THIS soon after taking it? It’s very disturbing how much hair I’ve “shed”, is it normal? Thanks for your help!
Detrickk
AskDocWeb: This may not be normal but it seems pretty common. For some men, it is reason enough to discontinue. Others say to wait it out because it only lasts for a few weeks. It’s also possible that those who said to wait it out weren’t loosing as much hair.
Subj: Hair thickened dramatically
Date: 4/24/2006
Propecia has worked such wonders for me that I have given it a nickname of “elixir of life”! 🙂 My hair have thickened dramatically, and my confidence level has soared. Believe it or not, my sex drive now is better than ever! I think maybe the folks suffering from the dysfunction may get it because they psychologically thought at the outset that Propecia was going to decrease their sex drives. Well, if you start believing that, it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy!

Subj: Recovering from Propecia
Date: 4/24/2006
I’ve been using Propecia for a little over a year. I neglected to renew my prescription and subsequently wasn’t taking my pills. After 2-3 weeks, I began to notice that I was a bit more aggressive and I started to feel mentally sharper. I’m thinking that whatever was happening while I was taking the pill was so gradual that I didn’t notice it, so I was only able to recognize the change when I suddenly stopped taking the pills. I was wondering if you’ve heard of anyone reporting any side effects related to this?
David
AskDocWeb: No, you’re the first to report such an experience. Maybe someone will write in who has had something similar.
Subj: Sexual dysfunction
Date: 4/24/2006
My husband is considering using Propecia. It was mentioned that some side effects may be sexual dysfunction. If this happens and he stops using Propecia will his sexual functions and performance return or not?
Diane
AskDocWeb: According to the maker of Propecia, his sexual drive should return after stopping, they just don’t say how long that will take.
Subj: Temples?
Date: 4/25/2006
Hi, I have been reading comments on your website and am ready to start taking Propecia. But, on the propecia website it says there is not sufficient evidence that propecia works at the TEMPLES. Where exactly is this temple area? Is it the area on the side of my head? Could you show me a picture?
Gilles
AskDocWeb: Your temples are the flat areas between your ears and your eyebrows/forehead. They are referring to your hairline in that area.
Subj: The future of hair loss products?
Date: 4/25/2006
Just started using Propecia (1st month), at an early but definite stage of hairloss. Minor sexual side effects as described, and plan to report progress. But I was curious about a comment you made while answering a post c. 2004. One young man was concerned about taking the product “for the next 70 years.” In your reply, you said that this was unlikely, as medical progress would most likely yield a more effective cure within the next 10 years. Of course, I’m paraphrasing liberally, but I was wondering if you still believe this and/or if there is any consensus out there, one way or the other, concerning the future of effective, affordable hair loss treatment. Thanks.
Mark
AskDocWeb: We’re not sure about a consensus but we are optimistic about effective new products for hair loss as well as outright cures for many diseases in the next few years.
Subj: Temporal regions
Date: 4/26/2006
Why do Rogain and Propecia not work in the temporal regions of the scalp?
Josh
AskDocWeb: Right now no one knows but when researchers find out then a product that works for the hairline will not far behind.
Subj: Missed dose?
Date: 4/27/2006
Why should you NOT take 2 propecia if you missed a dose?
Drew
AskDocWeb: Because it would be too large a dose to take at once and that would make it an overdose. Most people know that overdosing is something to avoid.
Subj: No libido with Propecia
Date: 5/3/2006
I’ve been on propecia for about 18 months. I have had no libido for about 8 of those months. I can definitely say that my testicles have shrunk.
Chris
Subj: Permanent impotence?
Date: 5/7/2006
Hi, thinking of taking propecia, is there a chance it could cause permanent impotence? And is it worth the risk/ are there any other solutions? Thanks,
Chris
AskDocWeb: This drug hasn’t been around long enough to say for sure if it can cause permanent impotence but there are a few men still suffering the sexual side effects three years after discontinuing. We recommend Procerin as a safer alternative for hair loss.
Subj: Lost sex drive
Date: 5/8/2006
I used propecia for 5 months. It really worked and got my hair back, then side effects started. I lost my sex drive and libido, also got testicular pain. Then I read comments about the drug on the web, saw that there was a significant number of people experiencing same side effects. I gave up the drug and everything seems to be normal now.

Subj: Propecia loosing effectiveness?
Date: 5/9/2006
I’ve been taking propecia for 5 years and it has greatly slowed my hair loss. I have several family members who lost all of their hair by 25 and now, at almost 30, I’ve retained most of mine. In the last 6 months I’ve noticed some hair loss at a faster rate than I’ve noticed since I first started losing my hair. Is there a time period at which Propecia starts losing it’s effectiveness?
Chris
AskDocWeb: Yes, it can lose its effectiveness, but it’s different with everyone, so a timetable cannot be given.
Subj: Hair loss treatment?
Date: 5/9/2006
hiya I was considering using propecia as I’m 21 male and my frontal area is starting to thin. My father is bald so I can except that it will happen to me 1 day. Although he says his never started till he was 30 or so. I used to take steroids for bodybuilding, which was a big mistake. With that what can I expect with my thinning of hair. Will it go very fast I heard steroids speed up the process of hair loss. What do you recommend I do. I heard of propecia and that its meant to be good but after reading all these reviews I’d say 95% people have side effects. Sexual side effects are a no-no for me obviously but I’d do anything to keep my hair. So depressed at the minute with all this please give me some advice, thanks.
James
AskDocWeb: We’d like to give you a good answer but unfortunetly there isn’t one. Staying away from the steroids will help. While a high percentage of the users here report negative side effects, you have to remember that that is what this website is all about, collecting feedback from users. Those who experience side effects are the most likely to find us as opposed to the majority of users who have no side effects and are not likely to come here.
As for our recommendation, that would have to be Procerin. We see it as a safer alternative that is working for 7 out of 10 men. That’s pretty good odds.
Subj: High blood pressure and increased anger
Date: 5/9/2006
I know someone taking propecia who is now experiencing high, high blood pressure and increased anger. Is this a side effect of propecia?
Amy
AskDocWeb: Although neither of these side effects are “officially” listed with this product, there have been several reports of problems with anger and controlling the temper. Your friend should consult with his doctor about this rather severe problem.
Subj: Any birth defects?
Date: 5/10/2006
I’ve been using Propecia for 5 years with good results and no side effects. I’m getting married soon and we are planning to have a child right away. Should I stop taking Propecia now? Do you know of any documented cases of birth defects caused by Propecia being passed through male semen?
Steve
AskDocWeb: Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. To avoid trouble, remember that women should not handle this drug because of the adverse effects on a male fetus. Although this drug will not affect your sperm as far as birth defects, even without any impairment of normal sexual function, it may decrease the volume of ejaculate making conception more difficult.
Subj: Mood swings with Propecia?
Date: 5/11/2006
I just wanted to say that I took Propecia for a year and during that time I experienced severe mood swings, particularly a tendency to cry that I didn’t have before. I wanted to know if there’s any research on that.
Lalo
AskDocWeb: We haven’t seen any research reporting mood swings but we have a few reports of problems controlling temper.
Subj: Decreased libido and decreased erection strength
Date: 5/13/2006
I stopped taking propecia 6 weeks ago because of decreased libido and decreased erection strength. I had been taking the drug for about 2.5 years. I still suffer from the sexual side-effects. Do you know about how long it will take for my body to readjust?
Josh
AskDocWeb: There is no way to tell how long that will take but you could help others by keeping track and let everyone know how long it takes you to get back to normal. Read more feedback.
