Subj: Propecia story
Date: 5/17/2006
I’m 21 male and started taking propecia 8 months ago, and stopped two weeks ago because of several side effects. Firstly, my sperm count reduced dramatically, my sex drive became very unsatisfying in my girlfriends eyes, and mostly because off the effect it had on my concentration, intelligence. Before starting with propecia, I passed my university exams with no problems, even getting the best results of my year last summer. Since ca. 3 months of treatment, I realized for the first time how my concentration had become bad, I couldn’t work for more than half a day, and my understanding of problems lost it’s effectiveness. Just to tell you: take care,

Subj: Shedding with Propecia?
Date: 5/20/2006
What percentage of users experience noticeable “shedding” while beginning to use propecia?

RM

AskDocWeb: Exact numbers are not available from the manufacturer however, we have received many reports from users of shedding with Propecia.

Subj: Propecia after hair transplant
Date: 5/20/2006
I had a hair transplant several weeks ago and am doing well. I was prescribed propecia 1mg 1x per day. I take alot of vitamins and supplements and a pharmacist told me that Saw Palmetto would counteract the positive effects of the propecia, is this true? I saw a hair treatment at the same drugstore that contained Saw Palmetto and the box claimed it inhibited production of DHT. That would mean it works the same wouldn’t it? I am also using minoxodil 5% but had to discontinue due to irritation. Can you comment please? Thanks for your help…

Michael

AskDocWeb: The idea that saw palmetto might counteract the effects of Propecia is a new one. There is no stated interaction between Finasteride and saw palmetto indicated in the Physician’s Desk Reference (PDR) or the package insert of either Proscar or Propecia. A search of Google.com didn’t turn up any reference either so we have to wonder where he got that idea. There are some health concerns with using saw palmetto but that is not one of them.

Subj: Concern about unborn child
Date: 5/22/2006
My wife is pregnant about 13 pregnant. I quit taking propecia while we were trying to get pregnant. Now that she is pregnant I started taking propecia again. My wife read where it is harmful for a pregnant woman to physically come in contact with Propecia. My wife is concerned that now that I am taking propecia that my sperm contains propecia traces and will hurt the unborn baby. Is there any data to suggest this is true or untrue?

John

AskDocWeb: From data supplied by the manufacturer: No developmental abnormalities have been observed in offspring resulting from mating finasteride-treated male rats (at 488 times the human exposure) with untreated females. The main concern is that your wife should not come into contact with the dust from any crushed or broken pills.

Subj: Shedding at 19
Date: 5/22/2006
Hi. I started taking propecia (In the form of proscar, just cut the pills) roughly 8 months ago when I noticed I was losing hair. At this point I have not noticed it working at all, nor does rogain. My hair loss actually seems to have increased significantly in the last month. When washing my hair I count as many a 50 hairs on my hands daily. Does male pattern baldness cause hair loss this aggressive?

It’s not just on the crown but the entire head. I only started “shedding” maybe 10 months ago and my hair is already noticeably thinning. I’m only 19 and feel as though I might be completely bald before I’m 21. I until recently would separate a few weeks of pills at a time and put them in a ziplock bag. Do you think that exposure to light would make it ineffective?

If you can answer any of these questions or give me any advice as what to do it would be great. Thanks.

Ben

AskDocWeb: If you read the package insert for Rogaine you will find that you should have quit using it 4 months ago, you should have seen results by then if it was going to work for you at all. You could actually be causing more hair loss by continued use.

The manufacturer of Proscar says nothing about light affecting the pills. You might check our list of drugs that cause hair loss (halfway down that page) to see if you are taking anything that might be causing a problem. With hair loss as aggressive as you describe we suggest you consult with a dermatologist.

Subj: This drug is a poison
Date: 5/22/2006
My boyfriend was on Propecia for 5 months. It seemed to help with the hair loss problem but he did experience a significant loss of libido. We have been together for 11 years and not even once did we have any problems of the sort as a couple. I have to admit, it was rather frustrating. As many other people have reported, erections were very hard to keep and not very hard. It felt like he had totally lost interest in sex. In addition, he had trouble sleeping at night. I think this may have something to do with the anxiety and panic-attack side effects that other people have mentioned. He is not the kind of guy who would lose it and be angry or anxious, but it definitely affected his ability to take more than 5 hours of sleep at night. I was very much afraid that these effects might be irreversible but he seems to be OK now, 3 months after he stopped taking it. This drug is a poison. Do not take it and do not let anybody else take it. There must be a better way to deal with hair loss…

Subj: Question regarding androgenetic alopecia vs. bitemporal recession.
Date: 5/22/2006
In some descriptions of Propecia they proclaim efficiency against androgenetic alopecia, yet they do not give firm proof about efficiency against bitemporal recession. Are there any clinical proofs that Propecia will help against bitemporal recession?

Jan

AskDocWeb: For those who are wondering what bitemporal recession is, it’s the loss of hair at both the temples at the same time. And no, there isn’t any current evidence that we are aware of at this time that Propecia will help against this problem.

Subj: Tolerance?
Date: 5/23/2006
I see it is possible to develop a tolerance to propecia. When does this tolerance take effect? Will hair loss resume at its normal pace or will it still resume slowly?

G

AskDocWeb: Yes, you “can” develop a tolerance at any time, no one can say for sure when or if that will happen. If you develop a tolerance you will likely go through a period of heavy shedding until you have lost all the benefits provided by the drug. At that point your hair loss will resume at its normal rate.

Subj: Sore nipple
Date: 5/23/2006
After taking Propecia for about 3 months my left nipple is extremely sore. How concerned should I be?

Ed

AskDocWeb: This sounds like a precursor to unwanted breast development which is a known side effect of this product. Best to have a serious discussion with your doctor about this. Let’s put this another way, if you continue taking Propecia you may find it embarrassing to visit your local bar for a drink.

Subj: Propecia induced ED
Date: 5/24/2006
I’m a 27 year old male who started using propecia after mild hair loss. One week into treatment I noticed that my erections were much weaker, and that I had NOT lost interest in sex. I was still my horny self but without my previous tool to do the job? Also, I started to use this on my pediatric anesthesia rotation, which made me insane. I had a temper, I was snapping at my colleagues. I had turned into near lunacy. So my question is does PDE5 Inhibitors do the job for Propecia induced ED?

Subj: Propecia breast enlargement?
Date: 5/26/2006
I started taking propecia about 4 or 5 months ago and although it’s worked pretty good, I’m not starting to notice that my belly and pectorals are getting bigger. I haven’t gained a single pound and I’ve been eating like I always have. Does this have something to do with the Propecia maybe or is there a way where you can gain belly and breast fat without gaining weight? What made me think so is that people that have testicular cancer and have to remove their testicles, their breasts increase a lot so maybe since propecia reduces dht, is that why some fat is starting to develop?

Mohamed

AskDocWeb: The cause may not be what you think. We think you should talk to your doctor about this because Propecia is known to cause breast enlargement in some men.

Subj: Propecia side effects
Date: 5/26/2006
Is propecia side effects retardable?

Ibrahim

AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer, all side effects subside after discontinuing. They just don’t say how long that takes.

Subj: Weary of side effects
Date: 5/28/2006
I appear to have MPB, so doctor has decided to prescribe propecia. Slightly weary of the side effects, however I’m trying to take into account that although most comments on here are negative, people generally only write when they have a bad experience! I’m sure there are many thousands out there with good results. Hope it works!

Mark

AskDocWeb: Yes, there are many people who have positive results with propecia. Let us know how it goes and good luck.

Subj: Breathing problems?
Date: 5/31/2006
Has Propecia given any of you breathing problems? I know it sounds like a random question.

Rob

AskDocWeb: Only in the event of an allergic reaction, in which case you should seek immediate medical attention.

Subj: Avoiding birth defects
Date: 6/1/2006
My boyfriend has been taking Propecia for 8 months. We have heard that he should stop taking it if he wants to become a father to avoid the risk of abnormalities in a male baby’s sex organs. We do not know for how long he should stay away from it before a pregnancy event. Could somebody give us advice? Thanks.
