Subj: Propecia shedding
Date: 6/4/2006
I am 25 years old, and am experiencing just the beginning stages of hair loss. I have only just begun taking propecia a month ago, and have noticed that a lot more hair is falling out than it had before. I had heard that this was common as the hair follicles are beginning to regenerate. But had also heard that propecia can cause hair loss, how can I tell if it is actually working? When should I make the cut off point and stop taking it if hair loss continues?

Sam

AskDocWeb: As near as we can tell the shedding lasts from 2-5 weeks. If you are still shedding at the end of 6 weeks talk to your doctor.

Subj: Minoxidil with propecia?
Date: 6/7/2006
Ive been suffering from hair loss for around 2-3 years. I started firstly using rogaine 2% then went to rogaine 5%. This was for about a year and a half. I did notice a bit of improvement but what really irratated me was the flaking and itching of the scalp.

I’m now on the combination of minoxidil 12% with 5% azelic acid and propecia 1mg. This has been for around 9 months now and to be honest, I really haven’t noticed much difference. Do you have any idea or have had results from people on this combination perhaps who have shown improvement, if so, how long? and also, is minoxidil 5% with propecia a better alternative?

AS

AskDocWeb: If you haven’t noticed a difference by now then it is not likely to work for you. These products do not work for everyone.

Subj: Just started taking Propecia
Date: 6/9/2006
I am an 18 year old male who has been taking propecia for 3 days….before I started taking the Drug I was experiencing major hair loss, like whenever I would wipe my hand against my head about 10 hairs would fall out each time and now that I’m on propecia I haven’t really seen much of a difference. Is it cause I’m not on the drug long enough?? Also my friend tells me that since I have long hair (about 4-5 inches long) that hair will just naturally fall out as it does in women…is this true??

Muad

AskDocWeb: Yes, you haven’t been on it long enough. It will take months to see results. The length of your hair has no influence on how fast you lose it.

Subj: Long-term use of Propecia?
Date: 6/10/2006
How long should one continue to use propecia, lifelong?

Kho

AskDocWeb: You have to buy Propecia and use it as long as you want the results to continue.

Subj: Laser Comb VS Propecia
Date: 6/10/2006
I’ve seen a lot of good press on the Hair Max Laser comb lately, so much so that I decided to purchase one. I’ve been on Propecia for the past 10 years, and have gotten to the point in my life (27 years old) where I question the long term effects of taking the same pill year after year. Would I be taking a major gamble in phasing out Propecia in lieu of the Laser Comb, or should I continue with the Propecia if I want to keep my hair?

Scott

AskDocWeb: There has only been one post from a Laser comb user and they said it didn’t work for them.

Subj: Propecia
Date: 6/15/2006
Just wondering how long it takes for propecia to clear your system once you have stopped taking it?

Roberto

AskDocWeb: Most of the drug will be gone within three days.

Subj: Propecia Sucks
Date: 6/18/2006
Propecia may work as long as you don’t care about having sex ever again. Which is the reason that most of us want to keep our hair anyway, right. The sexual side effects are no joke. I tried it when I was 21, NEVER EVER had any trouble before that. The first day I couldn’t hold an erection. After a week or so of this I quit propecia. My erections were back to normal within a day or two. Propecia Sucks.

Subj: Propecia miscarriages?
Date: 6/21/2006
I need to know if taking propecia by the male can go through the system and into the female during intercourse, causing miscarriages? This has happened to my daughter in the last 5 months and her husband has used propecia for about 5 years.

Cynthia

AskDocWeb: This is the first we have heard of a miscarriage involving Propecia. Given the number of men using Propecia we would expect that this would sometimes happen by chance but if others have had miscarriages please share it here.

Subj: Propecia mood swings
Date: 6/24/2006
I noticed mood swings when I took propecia as well. High to low and back. I seem to be able to control these swings now by rationalizing that it’s just the drug. My hair loss has definitely slowed since taking it (about 3 weeks now).

Subj: Potential birth defects
Date: 6/25/2006
Is there a potential of birth defects because the male has this drug in his system? My wife is very nervous about me taking this drug and then getting her pregnant.

Rich

AskDocWeb: Your wife’s concerns are important and anything you can do to increase her sense of security could benefit you both.

All the information we have from the manufacturer indicates that the possibility of birth defects exists only when the woman takes Propecia or handles the crushed or broken tablets. The active ingredient in Propecia can be absorbed through the skin but the tablets are coated in an attempt to prevent this.

Subj: Propecia in semen?
Date: 6/27/2006
I just started taking Propecia a few days ago. My wife is very concerned because we plan to start a family in a few months and she is worried about possible birth defects to the fetus. Can a pregnant woman, or one who intends to become pregnant, come into contact with the semen of a Propecia user?

Martin

AskDocWeb: The amount of Propecia in semen is very small. In one study semen levels were so small that they were undetectable in 60% of men using 1mg of Propecia per day. Also see the post above this one.

Subj: Proscar Vs Propecia Vs Procerin
Date: 6/27/2006
What is the main difference between Proscar Vs Propecia? Or are these 2 the same? Both are Finasteride. Also, if one is on Proscar Oral Medication, would it be ok to take Procerin concurrently? What would you suggest? Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Kaydi

AskDocWeb: The main difference between Proscar and Propecia is in the dosage. Proscar contains 5mg of finasteride and Propecia contains 1mg of finasteride. Both are prescription drugs where Procerin is not.

Subj: Propecia man boobs
Date: 6/29/2006
I have taken propecia for about 1 week now. I’m 26, I can feel that my chest has enlarged and is uncomfortable. I am worried, do not want man boobs. But I am getting them. If I continue to take propecia will it increase or eventually go away?? Or is this effect permanent even if I stop or continue?? please help. Does this mean I have low dht to begin with since I had enlargement of my chest. from Propeica? please let me know, thanks.

John

AskDocWeb: Yes, if you continue with Propecia, your symptoms are likely to increase. According to the manufacturer, the “man boobs” side effect disappears within a year.

Subj: Propecia mood swings
Date: 7/6/2006
My husband has been taking propecia for about 5 years now. Propecia has done wonders for his hair but has been hell on the rest of his family. I have noticed extreme mood swings and constant anger management problems. He used to be a very calm and even-tempered person, now he is out of control. Let’s not even go into the lack of sex issue. Why isn’t this talked about before treatment?

Kathleen

AskDocWeb: Sometimes it is and sometimes it is not. Ideally patients should be made aware of all the symptoms and possibilities before taking a medication, but too often that just doesn’t happen. That’s why we are here for those who take the initiative to find out what others are saying about these products.

Subj: Propecia for women?
Date: 7/6/2006
Can this product be used if you are a woman but have no intentions of getting pregnant. If not are there any similar products that work for women. I have had women ask me this and I am not sure how to respond.

HEJ

AskDocWeb: The only concern about women taking Propecia that we have found has to do with the risk of birth defects. If there is no chance of becoming pregnant than that is not a problem.

Subj: Propecia story
Date: 7/9/2006
This is my post from 5/13/06: I stopped taking propecia 6 weeks ago because of decreased libido and decreased erection strength. I had been taking the drug for about 2.5 years. I still suffer from the sexual side effects. Do you know about how long it will take for my body to readjust?

Today is July 8, 2006 and I have recovered about 80% – 90% of my libido and erection strength. This is about 3 months after I stopped using propecia which I had taken for 2.5 years. One adverse side effect that I did not write about in my last post was decreased testicle and penis size (both un-erect and erect). Both of my testicles and my penis seemed to have decreased in size. My testicles felt lighter than normal. Although my penis seems to have returned to its normal size, my testicles sometimes feel like they haven’t. At times they feel their normal size and weight, but at other times, it seems that they are smaller and feel lighter. In addition, when I drink alcohol, my testicles feel tingly and seem to shrink. I don’t know if this is normal, and I just hadn’t been conscious of it before, or if it is another adverse side effect. Has anyone else reported a similar reaction? Another potential cause of my decreased libido may be my increased age. I’m not 16 or 19 or 21 anymore. I’m 24. However, 24 seems to be too young an age to have a noticeably decreased libido.

Furthermore, during the last few months of taking the drug I had a very difficult time falling asleep. However, this may have been caused by other factors such as increased anxiety due to law school. On the other hand, it may have been caused by anxiety over my decreased libido and other physical problems caused by propecia.

Overall, I am displeased with the drug because of its adverse side effects. It does work to stop hair loss and to regrow some hair but at a price (at least for some users). I have noticed that I have been losing more hair and at a faster pace since I stopped taking propecia. Yet, I’m unwilling to place my body, and especially my reproductive system, at risk for my hair. I am especially disappointed at my doctor for failing to warn me about the adverse side effects that many users seem to be experiencing. When I spoke to him about my physical problems he did state that many of his patients have suffered similar side affects. Most drugs warn of possible side affects, but this is the first time that I have taken a drug and actually experienced the potential side affects. Merck should be sued and forced to take this drug off the market until further studies have been conducted.
