Subj: Excessive drinking with Propecia
Date: 2/7/2007
I have seen comments on Finasteride being metabolized in the liver and was wondering what effect this may have on your liver in terms of alcohol consumption. I am in my 27 and have used propecia for about 4 years. I don’t drink during the weekends, but I do drink on the weekends (heavily). I have regular checkups with my doctor as far as liver enzymes and such go, and my doc says I am perfectly healthy. Do you think excessive drinking on weekends coupled with Propecia usage would matter? Thank You.
Tony
AskDocWeb: Yes, excessive drinking does matter because it is known to lead to problems. We believe in moderation most of the time and use excessive drinking to find your limits, not every weekend.
Subj: Discontinuing Propecia after 8 years
Date: 2/10/2007
I have been taking Propecia for roughly 8 years with only good effects. Hair loss stopped and no side effects. I stopped about 3 weeks ago as my wife and I are trying to conceive and don’t want any risks. Over the past week I have been experiencing anxiety, slightly short breath, nervousness and anxiousness, slight dizziness. It seems to come in waves with no consistent pattern. Is it possible that these symptoms are related to my ceasing use of Propecia? It’s the only change I’ve made and I haven’t been able to find any info anywhere on this. Any help is appreciated.
CT
AskDocWeb: Yes, it is possible that these symptoms are related to discontinuing propecia but there is no record of others having them. If they last longer than a week, we would check with a doctor because it could be an unrelated problem.
Subj: Penis getting smaller?
Date: 2/11/2007
I’m taking propecia almost for 2 years, I still loosing hair, but less then before, and I believe my penis getting smaller, I hope I find answer for my question.
Merouane
AskDocWeb: Sorry, what was your question? Do you think the Propecia is responsible for your penis getting smaller? It is known to produce erectile dysfunction in some men but we’ve not heard of anyone getting smaller.
Subj: Propecia + Minoxidil 12.5% + Azelaic Acid 5%
Date: 2/14/2007
I have been using a blend of: Propecia + Minoxidil 12.5% + Azelaic Acid 5%. I have been using this for the last 2 years! It worked for the first year with regrowth results on the crown only! However, after the first year the medication stopped working and now I have less hair than ever and it is accelerating! I am still taking the medication with the hope of it working again! I am also paying £100/month for the medication! Can you give me some advice on where to go from here and if you have heard of this before? Many thanks for your time.
Trevor
AskDocWeb: Yes, we’ve heard it before. Many times people will build up a tolerance for a medication and it will gradually stop working. With Minoxidil this seems to happen around 48 weeks. There is not much you can do about it other than to switch to something else. To continue spending money on hair loss products that don’t work is just a waste of money.
Subj: Other hair loss alternatives.
Date: 2/17/2007
I have consistent hair fall since a year…my doc has prescribed mintop…but reading reviews am scared of using it. The growth rate of my hair is very good, but the density has gone down. I feel this is the right time to take a decision. What are the other alternatives. Help me out, thank you,
Mirul
AskDocWeb: A good alternative would be Nisim Biofactors, a shampoo that supports hair growth and fights hair loss.
Subj: Individual hairs becoming thinner on Propecia
Date: 2/19/2007
I started propecia 16 months ago when I become concerned that I might one day lose all of my hair. I am 26 years old and my hair has been receeding 6-8 years, although I have not lost any hair from the crown of my head it has receeded back at least an inch or more from the frontal parts where male pattern baldness is typical. Since taking propecia I have noticed that my hair no longer seems to be thinning in terms of falling out, but the hairs themselves have become much thinner. I used to have extremely thick/coarse hair and now 16 months later my hair is amount is the same but the hairs themselves are extremely thin and wirey. Because this is not any of the listed side effects do you think this could be caused by the propecia, and if I stop taking it will my thick hair come back?
chad
AskDocWeb: We can only guess but experience says that it is not caused by the Propecia and if you stop taking it you will probably start loosing more hair. A dermatologist may be able to tell you more after taking a biopsy.
Subj: Permanent impotence
Date: 2/19/2007
I’ve read some reviews about propecia from propecia users over the Internet saying it gave them permanent impotence. Can this really happen or it is just the fear of taking something you know could make you impotent?
Bobbertson
AskDocWeb: Yes it can really happen but we have no evidence that it has happened. On the other hand several men have reported impotence lasting more than a year and one case where the impotence has continued after two and a half years.
Subj: Hair Loss sucks
Date: 2/20/2007
I have been on Propecia for about 3 1/2 months now. I have never been this depressed in my entire life. I now suffer from mechonia – a depression disorder since taking the medicine. Hair Loss sucks and since taking the pill my hair loss accelerated, to fast for me to handle. The first month my I felt no enjoyment from sex. It was a numbing feeling to something that should have been so special. Today the feeling is almost back to where it was but there are still traces that propecia is still in my system. I studied, I researched, I dreaded the feeling of losing hair, but hope keeps a man alive. My depression is because of what will be, this stupid, expensive pill is what I bare so I can prolong the effect of male F*ing baldness. I wouldn’t wish hair loss even on my enemies, one day guys there will be a true cure.

Update December 2010: Merck has officially added depression to the list of possible side effects of Propecia.
Subj: Proscar erectile problem
Date: 2/21/2007
I’m taking Proscar (1/4) since 3 years now. This product works fine for me. Since 2 months now, I’m having erectile problem and headache sometime. Before that, no problem at all. Can this problem come from the Proscar side effect, after 2 years and a half without any problem? Thx for your help.
Frank
AskDocWeb: Yes, it can happen at any time while on proscar.
Subj: Propecia for women?
Date: 2/22/2007
Please let me know if Propecia can work with women who do not and can not have babies anymore. (due to a hysterectomy)
Lynn
AskDocWeb: Yes, several women have reported successfully using it.
Subj: Permanent side effects?
Date: 2/22/2007
I’ve read some reports from people taking this drug about serious permanent side effects like foggy mind, hypogonadism, permanent impotence and the such after stopping the medication. Can this be? Can propecia alter your body so profoundly?
Bob
AskDocWeb: Yes, it is possible but not yet proven.
Subj: Considering procerin
Date: 2/22/2007
I quit fin after a month because for the last two weeks of my treatment, I had no morning erections and found it extremely difficult to get an erection at all. I use rogaine foam and nizoral 1% so I’m looking for a dht inhibitor to add to this regeim. It has to be something with no sexual sides though. I was considering procerin after reading some replies here but from the small trial done here, it seems some did get sexual side effects. Are there any other dht inhibitors that can be taken orally with no side effects? I’m aware of revivogen etc but don’t know if I will have the time in the mornings etc to use it.
John
AskDocWeb: Considering the number of those who reported sexual side effects, we concluded that Procerin has none. Three percent said that their libido increased and three percent said their libido decreased. These numbers are too small to be statistically significant and if you add them together they come out zero. (Added 5/24/07) Please read the disclaimer page on Revivogen’s website.
Subj: Tolerance to Propecia
Date: 2/25/2007
With regard to getting a tolerance to Propecia, do you have any advice on where to go? i.e. would it be wise to increase the dosage to 5mg; change diet? Many thanks for your help.
Frank
AskDocWeb: It would not be wise to increase your dosage, that just opens you up to an increased chance of side effects. And changing your diet is not likely to have any affect on hair growth. Currently there is no solution to building up a tolerance, sorry.
Subj: If you quit Propecia and still experience side effects
Date: 2/25/2007
If you’re considering taking Finasteride for hair loss, DON’T. Read the member stories, blood tests and studies about the dangers of this drug. There are many men now experiencing secondary hypogonadism and early Male Andropause (low testosterone/DHT, high Estrogens, low LH/FSH) as a result of usage, and side effects did NOT resolve after quitting. Many men have been left with decreased semen volume, shrunken penis/nuts, impotence, Peyronie’s Disease (crooked penis), decreased mental capacity and total loss of sex drive, to name but a few. Side effects of this drug are very real and can be dangerous for those that get them, as for the most part they seem to be IRREVERSIBLE and PERMANENT. Male Andropause, a condition usually seen in men aged 50+, is now affecting young men in their 20s thanks to this drug. DHT is a vital male hormone necessary for proper genital tissue structure, erectile function, libido, keeping Estrogens in check, and many other bodily functions. You have been warned.
