Subj: Man boods
I have been taking propecia for about 7 years. The results have been fairly good I think. It slowed my hair loss substantially and thickened my hair as well. I have a question about side effects however. I have noticed increased fat around my chest (man boobs). Can this be attributed to the propecia? Will it go away if I stop taking it? Also, it did not really regrow any hair for me…just essentially stopped my hair loss. If I stop taking it should I expect significant and sudden hair loss?
AskDocWeb: The “man boobs” will probably go away but you need to report this to your doctor. When Propecia is discontinued you loose all the hair that it kept you from loosing. And that happens in the following 12 months.
Subj: 22 year old male
Hi! I’m a 22 year old male. I have had hair loss since the age of 18. But it is very slow! And I noticed that my hairline is receding at the temples very slowly! I have thought about taking Propecia but am not too sure about it, because I am worried that it will effect my organs etc. Do you suggest I should try it?
AskDocWeb: No, we suggest you to find out about the possible side effects of Propecia before making a decision. There are side affects that you should make yourself aware of and for some men, it’s better to be bald than to lose their sex drive.
Subj: I need info
Unfortunately I have only 20 years and already have kidney stones…these are mainly produced by the high uric acid and calcium value. My question is this, if I start the Propecia, does it effects me with the kidney problem?? I mean thus it have something that will increase my problem?
AskDocWeb: No problem, Propecia is metabolized in the liver, not the kidneys. Increased serum levels have been noted in those with renal insufficiency (decreased kidney function), but no dosage adjustment is necessary.
Subj: Decided to stop because of side effects
I’m currently 25 years old and began taking propecia as a preventive measure after a small but noticeable amount of hair loss. After a week on the drug I started to notice side effects and but the end of week 2 I feel numb below the waist. After taking it for 15 days I decided to stop and fully expected to go back to normal, but that hasn’t happened. It’s been over 2 weeks now since I’ve stopped and I still feel the same. Is there anything I can do? Will I recover? When? What can I expect?
AskDocWeb: The recovery time varies with the individual but for most men it is a few months. You may need the help of a neurologist or urologist depending on how far below the waist you are talking about. Please notify your doctor about this.
Subj: Finasteride 5mg
I am 20yrs old. I have noticed about the losing of hair in crown area and front hair line decreases. It seems to be going to bald. I am healthy. Can I use finasteride 5mg? Can I take any of other medicines along with it?
AskDocWeb: Finasteride at 5mg would be Proscar and you need to talk to a dermatologist to find out if it would be safe for you or not.
I understand that DHT is responsible for the hair loss but I was wondering if it serves other purposes. Are there problems with rendering DHT in younger men (22 years of age)? As for the libido problem, what do you suggest would help the situation, other then not taking the prescription?
AskDocWeb: DHT seems to be necessary for the normal formation of sex organs in a male fetus. We know of no treatment for the loss of libido other than discontinuing the drug.
Subj: A year and a half after stopping Propecia
I had used propecia for about 5.5 years on and off from ages 35-41. It had worked at improving my overall fullness of hair with decent coverage around the crown. The cost of the drug has been a weak erection and libido, and a reduced amount of sperm that had a thick and lumpy consistency. I did not pay much attention to this and used Viagra to mask the shortcomings. But this is no solution and I decided for the sake of my health and fertility I that I would get of it altogether. It has been about 1.5 years of Propecia free life and I can report this:
1. Yes my erection has returned after about 1 year.
2. My hair is now falling out at a normal rate for my family history but it may appear a bit shocking if you have maintained a consistent amount of hair for about 5 years previously.
3. Sperm is no longer lumpy and yellowish and has returned to a decent amount (although not as much as before P, but this may be due to age and natural hormonal changes).
Subj: Nourkrin man
Hi, I have been taking propecia for 3 months now and have mild symptoms regarding libido. After checking out various websites regarding symptoms I am thinking of quitting as the drug seems to be largely untested long term. I was wondering if you have heard anything regarding Nourkrin man as a hair loss remedy? It’s getting good reviews over here in the UK and I’d like further info. Regards,
AskDocWeb: There has been no feedback on Nourkrin man, either in favor or against. It would be appreciated if you would share your results.
Subj: Hair loss products
I’ve used Propecia for years and tell you that this stuff works. I heard about Procerin and I’ve been testing it now for nearly 2 months, but I’m sorry to say, that it doesn’t work like Propecia. In some weeks I want to test Provillus and Revivogen…something else than propecia must work…
AskDocWeb: Two months is not an adequate amount of time for any hair loss product to do its job. If you are going to give them an honest try then use them for six months or at the very least, three months. And only use one hair loss product at a time.
Subj: Propecia stopped working after six years
(JD) I am 43 now and started losing my hair (thinning only) at age 32. I started taking Propecia and Xandrox (5% Minox mix) early 2000. I saw amazing results within six month of taking the drug after the initial shedding period ended, which lasted a couple of months. I grew back most of the hair that I lost, my hair looked very normal, no visible signs of any problems. The drugs continued to work until around September, 2005. I stopped taking Propecia for one month due to losing my meds while on vacation. Nothing to worry, I thought, my hair is great. I ordered Finistrade to replace Propecia because it’s cheaper and easier to get at my local pharmacy, which I continued to take until the end of 2005 (three – four months).
Early in 2006 (January). I started to notice increased amounts of shedding so I immediately stopped taking Finistrade and switched back to Propecia. It’s now March, 2007 and I have still not regained the hair that I have lost. As a matter of fact, my hair is now thinner then ever. Probably thinner then when I started the regimen in 2000. HELP! What can I do to re-grow my hair? I noticed many posts that mention a tolerance build up to Propecia. Is this True? My doctor tells me that tolerance buildup cannot happen and that the drug should keep working forever. I have been on Propecia now (religiously) for over 14 months and still have not regained what I have lost. Should I stick with it for another year? What will happen if I stop using it and switch to something else? What do you recommend? Sincerely,
AskDocWeb: The literature from the manufacturer of Propecia says that if it doesn’t work within 12 months then it is not likely to work at all and you gave it 14 months. It sounds like you have proven that at least one man has built up a tolerance to Propecia. There is no good recommendation, you can either try another hair loss product or accept the inevitable.
Subj: Worried about side effects
I m 26 year old and have just started taking this medicine for androgenic alopecia, but I am little worried about the side effects of the same specifically related sexual potency and all, are they very significant or irreversible, and after how long use of the drug thanks and regards,
AskDocWeb: Most guys who experience sexual side effects would agree that they are significant. The loss of sexual function has a strong emotional impact. According to the manufacturer, during the clinical trials all men who had sexual problems recovered. What users are reporting now is something that you should read while considering this drug.
Subj: Peach fuzz
I’m 20, I just began taking propecia about 4 days ago and I’m already noticing peach fuzz on the frontal entries that has thinned considerably over the past 2 years. If this is a sign of things to come then it’s definitely worth it. Will it eventually get thicker and darker at the pace I’m going?
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you are off to a good start. And yes, it should become thicker and darker.
Subj: Libido and sexual function have not returned
Hi, I have been on proscar for 4 months at 1mg per day. I quit 9 months ago and yet my libido and sexual function have not returned. I was put on TRT and that is not working either. How long do these side effects take to disappear and is there anyone that has never bounced back? Or is that just a wives tale?
AskDocWeb: Not quite a wives tale. There are some men who are still waiting (and hoping) for the return of their sexual function. The worst case we’ve heard about has been waiting two and a half years and still counting.
Subj: Propecia is great
Just after 8 months, I have seen significant improvements in the crown of my head. I have had no side effects. I have noticed that the hairs on my head begin to be visibly seen as thin blonde hair. Eventually, these hairs have become longer and thicker. I’m sure every one’s response to the medication is different. I suggest giving it time and never forgetting to take the medication.
