Subj: Alcohol and Propecia
I’ve been using propecia for about a month and a half now. I haven’t really noticed any difference but I still have a full head of hair anyway. I noticed a receding hairline so I decided to just start taking it as a method of prevention more than regrowth. I have not noticed any side effects. I do have a question though. I drink often and sometimes in large quantities. Will this decrease the effectiveness of propecia?
AskDocWeb: There are no cautions about the use of alcohol with propecia.
Subj: Permanent effect of impotence
Search propicia and you find its devastating side effects it can cause PERMANENT sexual side effects. They claim it will go away but there are many, many pages and forums about how it’s a lasting permanent effect of impotence.
Subj: Sexual concerns
I started finasteride a little over a month ago and my hair has gotten thicker…my bald spot in the back is filling up slowly…I hope the top of my head starts filling in too and doesn’t stop at just getting thicker… now for the bad part…my cum is a lot less than it used to be…sometimes I masturbate twice a day just to make sure I don’t become impotent… so obviously my concern is this…if my cum doesn’t shoot out when I masturbate…how can it possibly get a girl pregnant if it just flows out a little… and how long do I have to stop taking propecia for the levels of cum to reach normal again.
AskDocWeb: A pregnancy can be caused by the sperm just seeping out, ejaculation is not necessary.
If it leaks or oozes, that is all it takes. The amount of time required to return to normal varies with the individual. You have to be patient and wait to find out.
Subj: Stopped taking Porpecia
Hi, I used propecia for 2 days. I stopped immediately when I noticed it became slightly harder for me to have an erection, and now, I noticed I have a decreased volume of semen produced upon ejaculation. Please tell me how long these effects will take to go away? I have only been taking it for 2 days and it’s been 1 day since I stopped taking it. Surely it must be out of my system now? Then why do effects still stand?
AskDocWeb: The side effects can persists even after the drug is out of your system. There is no way to know how long they will last but if it is longer than a couple of weeks, we would see a doctor.
Subj: No scientific proof
I have been taking propecia for 5 months and have noticed an improvement. However for the past 2 weeks my hair has been falling out again. I have started using regaine again as well as propecia. Also my wife and I are planning on having children soon but my consultant advised me to stop taking propecia 3 months before we start. I have also been told that there is no scientific proof as yet. Please advise what the best solution is and why is my hair falling out again?
AskDocWeb: You are right, there is no scientific proof that your child will be free of birth defects. Why would you do anything that might increase the chances of problems? As for why your hair is falling out again, some men have reported building up a tolerance for the drug and it just stops working. Why that happens is not known.
Subj: Propecia side effects
Was on Propecia for about 9 months. After 3 I started feeling odd like never before. Foggy headed. Twitchy like I might be about to have a seizure, though I’ve never had one before. I wasn’t on anything else. I don’t drink or smoke. I take good care of myself and I began to wonder about the Propecia but my doctor assured me it was just nerves. There are no such side effects from this drug I was told by more than one physician. Still, I’d never felt remotely close to this way before, and was getting suspicious. Then things got much, much worse. Experienced a decreasing sex drive, and while on a trip alone had symptoms of a heart attack. Went to the ER but wasn’t one thankfully. Symptoms began occurring every night. I couldn’t sleep. Was terrified. Went on for a couple of months. During that time, I scaled back the Propecia and felt slightly better. Then got off it and felt more improvement. Back on and quickly felt worse. After the 3rd time in the ER I felt pretty sure it was the Propecia since I’d never experienced anything like this before, have an athlete’s heart and am not on anything else. So I got off the drug entirely. Turns out my experiences weren’t heart attacks but anxiety attacks. It was described to me as being like post traumatic stress disorder. It has taken almost a year for the symptoms to dissipate to nearly livable levels, though they’re not gone entirely, and some nights they reappear in diminished form. St John’s Wort and some sedatives at night seemed to help a lot. I imagine the drug won’t affect everyone this way, but I think physicians shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss this type of side effect. I’d warn anyone thinking of taking Propecia to remain alert to similar symptoms. I hope they disappear completely some day, but for now I’m stuck with them.
Subj: 1 week
I have been taking Propecia for about 1 week, so far I did not see any side effects, how long should I wait to see if I will get any side effects. I even think that I’m having more sex drive than before, I know its suppose to be the opposite, I don’t know if its in my head but I really think that my sex drive is up. Let me know for the side effects.
AskDocWeb: One week means you are just getting started. The manufacturer says that side effects are rare which we interpret to mean that most men have no side effects. On the other hand there is no set time for them to show up. They could show up a month later or a year later, there is no way to know if you will have them or not.
Subj: Propecia is a life saver
My hair started to thin, barely, but I knew from family history where it was going. I started on propecia at the age of about 23, at age 28-29, my hair looked like it did when I was 18, I have pictures, it’s almost unbelievable. As most men do though, I stopped taking it, with in 2-3years…oh boy, has it started going FAST. But again, since I still have all my hair follicles, a decent hair line, as when I was 23, thinning, but not gone. I have started taking propecia again. In 1 1/2 months, when I shower, hair has stopped falling out. Hair diameter at the base is getting thicker. Almost looks silly cause where my hair line has gone back like 1/4 of a cm, I have all these little hairs all over the place. I believe I fall into some 4% category of men where my body accepts propecia like a best friend or something. I know in the next 6mos to 12mos, what is going to happen, all my hair will be back to normal and I won’t loose any. Both sides of the families in the men have gone bald at the ages of like 33 or so…bald, not loosing or thinning… I still have a FULL head of hair… Propecia is a life saver for me. Also…decreased sex drive??? Not me…not problems at all. I think the key is that I did not wait till my hair was way gone to try and solve the problem, when I saw the writing on the wall, I did something about it right away. I suggest to men in their 20s or so, if this happens, start taking it right away and don’t ever stop. My hair has thinned, cause I was stupid and stopped, but its not gone or nearly gone, I will take Propecia for as long as I can.
I am considering getting on Propecia. I am 27 and have noticed my hair generally getting thinner, but not in one specific area. My girlfriend thinks I am crazy and I am not loosing my hair, it still looks good, but not as good as it was at age 20. My question is this. Does everyone experience shedding? If not, what are the percentages? and does it work at maintaining the hairline at all?
AskDocWeb: It is obvious that some men experience a shedding phase because of all the feedback about it but we have yet to find statistics on it. In the 42 pages of feedback we have on Propecia (over four and a half years, only 2 men have reported having success with the hairline.
Subj: Propecia side effects
Dear AskDocWeb, I had been taking propecia to treat my thinning hair, helped my hair, but I had been on the drug for 6 and a half years. In these 6 1/2 years I started noticing side effects: 1. Less sexual interest, 2. Mental Fog, 3.Joint pain, testicles were tender, and I mood swings. Finally wising up a bit, I stopped taking propecia and have been off the drug for about 4 month’s. At first it felt like I had the sex drive of someone going through puberty, now I feel normal in that sense, not like I was at first. My thoughts have become clearer, and the mood-swings have stopped. My Joints have improved slightly, but they still hurt. My question is – should I get some blood work done, and or should I also have my liver function checked?
AskDocWeb: We would get a rheumatoid factor done, PSA, and a comp panel.
Subj: Uric acid level?
I took propeice for 4 months and I started getting gout on my foot … my father has it as well but he gets it maybe once a year when his uric acid gets high. When I was on the pill I kept getting it like life, once a month. When I stopped it went away. So does taking propeica raise your uric acid level high and what other negative things does or can it effect in the future?
AskDocWeb: We found no evidence that Propecia would raise the uric acid level but a few of the drugs that did include:
- Ascorbic acid
- Nicotinic acid
Most uric acid dissolves in the blood and travels to the kidneys, where it passes out of the body in urine. If your body produces too much uric acid or doesn’t remove enough of it, you can get sick. Excessively high levels of uric acid, called hyperuricemia, can cause gout. Read more feedback.
