Subj: Propecia and Procerin together?
Date: 9/6/2007
I took Propecia for about six months. I am 25 and thinning in the front. Although in the beginning I did see more hair fall out (which frustrated me) it did stop by about the fourth month or so. And by the six month I was feeling confident about it as my hair loss stopped and I could swear I saw some new hairs growing in. Well, for certain reasons I stopped taking it for about three months and my hair started falling out again. So I am back on it(again) and have had accelerated hair loss. But I am expecting it to stop. I have no glaring sexual side-effects. But I do have a question. With all the positive reviews of Procerin, would it be worth it to take both Propecia and Procerin at the same time? Thanks for the great website!

AskDocWeb: No, we would not use both at the same time.

Subj: Hormone pills to increase sex drive?
Date: 9/9/2007
Will using hormone pills to increase sex drive cause less effects of using propecia?

AskDocWeb: It’s likely that you already know the answer to that but want to hear something different. Sorry, Propecia can only block so much testosterone from being turned into DHT. If the theory is true, that testosterone conversion into DHT causes hair loss, then putting more testosterone in your system is counterproductive to hair growth.

Subj: Female Propecia user
Date: 9/10/2007
I am a female user of Propecia. I do not have an intention of pregnancy (using Diane) but I would like to learn if it will have side effects for my future pregnancy?

AskDocWeb: Everything we have read indicates that the concern is limited to exposure during pregnancy, not future pregnancies.

Subj: Nasal spray for sexual dysfunction
Date: 9/11/2007
Should I be using propecia if I use nasal spray for sexual dysfunction?

AskDocWeb: It would depend on what is in your nasal spray and only your doctor can determine if that is safe for you.

Subj: Stopped Propecia
Date: 9/14/2007
I used Propecia for 2.5 months and about 3 weeks ago I started to experience hives (bug bite looking things) itchy rash on my left fore arm and the left part of my mid back. I was sooo very itchy for 3 weeks even after taking Benadryl and using cortisone creme. I spoke to my doctor about stopping the daily pill and he said yes stop. But I don’t understand really the full ramifications of stopping the drug. I am still recovering from the hives/itch and I am afraid I will lose all my hair. Please advise… Thanks

AskDocWeb: You are not likely to loose all your hair, at least not right away. It will just start falling out at its natural rate.

Subj: Not keeping and holding an erection
Date: 9/18/2007
My husband was on propecia for about a month and got off due to some side effects such as not keeping and holding an erection. We became pregnant. It’s now been 7 months since his been off propecia but my husband has no sex drive. He’s not really instructed in sex anymore. It’s like the propecia killed his man hood. I need help. Please help, let me know if this is a fact.

AskDocWeb: Unfortunately this has been reported by others. Aside from consulting a urologist, about the only thing you can do is to wait and see if his sexual function returns.

Subj: Anxiety attacks
Date: 9/19/2007
I used propecia for just over a year. About 3 months in, I started struggling with incredible anxiety attacks. I had never in my life experienced this behavior before and it was excruciating panic. Normal situations that would make me slightly anxious would instead send me into an all-out panic attack. I also had some other interesting side effects. I felt foggy and disoriented very often, and I noted to a friend that although I was sleeping well I hadn’t remembered a dream in several months and this bothered me.

I finally found anecdotal evidence matching my symptoms on the web and decided to discontinue the drug. After about 2 weeks a number of things happened: My anxiety subsided significantly, my “brain fog” cleared noticeably, and I abruptly started remembering dreams again. Maybe I was just sleeping lighter after stopping, but it was light night and day. I am still suffering somewhat with anxiety, by my belief is that the residual effects are due to a year’s worth of conditioning to be anxious on propecia. I won’t take it again. Recent studies have suggested that propecia suppresses not just DHT, but some other hormones that regulate the natural anxiety and depression cycle, but the jury is still out. This may not affect most men in this manner, but for me, it was huge.

Update December 2010: Merck has officially added depression to the list of possible side effects of Propecia.

Subj: Erection difficulty
Date: 9/22/2007
I have been taking propecia for 9 months now. I notice a little more hair growth. However, I do notice a decrease in ejaculation and difficulty to get and maintain an erection. If I stop taking Propecia, how long will it take for these side-effects to get out of my system?

AskDocWeb: They used to say within a year but now no time is specified. They just say, “These side effects went away in men who stopped taking PROPECIA because of them.”

Subj: Is this drug working?
Date: 9/22/2007
Hello I am 25 year old and I am on finastrade 1mg for about 7 months now. I haven’t noticed any regrowth of hair but saw a decrease in hair fall. Is this drug working for me? I want my hair back.

AskDocWeb: There are two things Propecia may do for you, stop hair loss and grow new hair. If you have a decrease in hair loss (hair fall) then that part is working. It is less likely to cause a growth in new hair. Studies on its effectiveness in restoring hair growth have a range from 40% to 65%.

Subj: 8 years later, still not normal
Date: 9/22/2007
I took Propecia in 1999 for about six months. It grew hair like I was 17 again. Too bad it turned me into a damned castrati! Couldn’t get it up, decreased to maybe 10% of the ejaculate I used to have. To this day I am still not normal. Better, but only half the erectile ability and maybe 20% of the ejaculate I used to have. This stuff leaves you permanently damaged. Grows hair but what it does to your testosterone is tragic. I doubt anyone can help with this situation, hopeless I’m afraid!

Subj: Propecia in semen
Date: 9/27/2007
Yes, my partner and I just had oral sex not long ago and I was wondering if my semen can be dangerous for anyone to digest while I’m on Propecia? Also will it stay in a person stomach for a while?

AskDocWeb: The manufacturer gives no indication of any such problem. I doubt if it would survive very long in stomach acid.

Subj: Hair growing after stopping Propecia
Date: 9/27/2007
I’ve taken Propecia for several years, when I stopped I’ve noticed that hair growing in other parts of my body like hands, arms, etc which I never experimented before, is this a side effect after stopping taking this drug? Thank you,

AskDocWeb: No, new hair growth has not been reported anywhere on the body after stopping Propecia.

Subj: Burning, inflammation and irritation
Date: 9/27/2007
Hello, I am 21 and have noticing hair loss since about the age of 17 or 18 on my hairline. My dad is bald, along with that, all my uncles are either bald or have a definite hair thinning. However both my grandpas have full heads of hair. I started taking propecia just this last May so I have been using propecia for about 4 and 3/4 months. For about the past 6 to 7 weeks or since mid august I have been experiencing some scalp irritation and inflammation. At first it started as itching and started hurting a little bit. Not all the time though, just when I lay down usually or run my fingers through my hair. Is this a common thing that happens or what does it mean? I have been noticing shedding (I know it’s common) or at least a definite hair loss since about the time of the inflammation occurring. When I examine the top of my head in a mirror I can see the scalp somewhat, this wasn’t the case and it wasn’t nearly as bad at all until the inflammation started. Once again is that common or even heard of? Is this a sign that propecia is working or do I need to see a doctor? And finally…I work out alot. I take supplements, vitamins, etc. do any of things effect the way that propecia works? Do things like pro-hormones or steroids or testosterone boosters have an effect. I know that testosterone is linked to DHT, I am wondering if propecia will counter that or what will happen? Any thoughts at all will help alot, any suggestions. I’m super paranoid about going bald and will pretty much take any step not to. Thank you,

AskDocWeb: Taking testosterone boosters will add to the problem of hair loss. The burning, inflammation and irritation should not be happening. We suggest you consult with a dermatologist. Sometimes they have a patient discontinue use for a week, then restart using it every third day, then every two days etc. to see if it happens again. Read more feedback.
