Subj: Propecia issues
Date: 10/20/2007
I have been taking Propecia (finasteride) for over a year. Worked great! But, over the last month or so my hair is thinning again. Feels like it’s shedding. First, can propecia stop working and then work again if I just keep taking it? Second, at the same time I noticed the ‘shedding’ I stopped taking Sertraline (generic Zoloft) and starting taking probiotics and a strong vitamin b complex. Any thoughts there???
Bill
AskDocWeb: The men who reported a period of shedding (lasting 4 to 6 weeks) with Propecia say that it happens within the first three or four months, not after a year. There is not enough data on those who stop and start again to make a guess about that. On the other hand, people have reported hair loss while taking Zoloft so it is possible that just discontinuing that drug could stop the shedding.
Subj: Propecia side effects
Date: 10/20/2007
I’ve tried Propecia for 4 month and I did not see any side effect. Can you tell me please when in which period you can see side effect. When I started to take propecia I see that I have new hairs but I don’t know when your side effect appear, can you help me please?
Bardh
AskDocWeb: Side effects can show up anytime but are far more likely to occur at the beginning of treatment and during the first few months.
Subj: Very fatigued
Date: 10/25/2007
I’ve been taking propecia for about a month, and I’ve noticed my hair has stopped falling out immediately. Unfortunately I’ve also noticed that I’ve been very fatigued. This is a problem because I’m very active and I don’t even feel like going to the gym, or even at the gym I feel weak. Curious if you have heard of similar cases, and if it’s a phase or a problem.
Matthew
AskDocWeb: Only four men have reported fatigue or feeling extremely tired since we started the pages on Propecia (January, 2003).
Subj: libido has dropped, testicles now sensitive and ache
Date: 10/28/2007
I’ve been a user of Propecia for nearly 6 months, and despite not yet seeing any major improvement to hair growth but signs of retaining what I’ve left, my heart tells me to remain hopeful and stick with the prescription. On the other hand however, my head tells me that vanity is clearly coming at a price (and I don’t just mean the price of it on private prescription!)… despite having an attractive girlfriend my libido has dropped to a feeble once a week affair, my testicles have now become a little sensitive and have a tendency to ache sometimes, my sperm has thinned to a watery consistency which is only great for target practice, and probably the most annoying factor is my muscle growth appears to have been affected. I’m still working out 3-4 times a week, eating the right diet but don’t seem to be making gains any longer… does the inhibiting of DHT from Propecia affect the overall production of Testosterone levels in my body and therefore reduce my ability to regrow muscle? I can’t help but think I’m ice skating up hill right now? Would appreciate your thoughts… Thanks
JP
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you have figured it out but are not yet ready to make the decision. Only you can do that.
Subj: Is there any risk?
Date: 10/31/2007
I’m suffering form hairloss and tried anything like minoxidil, ervamatine and so…except propecia. I am 21 years old and single, is there any risk for me to NOT have a child when I got married? Thnx,
Iman
AskDocWeb: If you are asking if it well make you infertile, the answer is no, it will not affect your fertility.
Subj: Intense pain in right testicle
Date: 10/31/2007
I am 23 years old, and I have been on propecia for three months now. I have noticed no acceleration of hair loss or growth since I have been taking the medicine. I also experienced no side effects…until now. One week ago, I woke up with an intense pain in my right testicle / groin area. I thought I had simply slept in an unfavorable position, but the pain has not disappeared. It comes and goes throughout the day, and completely disrupts my concentration. I am worried that permanent damage has been done to by body – and for what? Propecia didn’t help me one bit, and given that there are 44 PAGES of complaints by Propecia-takers on this website, I’d say that Merks advertisement of “2% experienced side effects” is a crock of $hit. My advice to everyone out there is to avoid this medicine at all costs – I would trade, without hesitation, being completely bald to take away this physical discomfort that I’m now afraid will never go away.

Subj: Decreased libido/mojo and reduced sperm count
Date: 10/31/2007
I’ve been on Propoecia for nearly 6 months and have been suffering from the typical sexual side effects – decreased libido/mojo and reduced sperm count… however to all those out there who have since kicked taking it and yet to regain a normal sex life, might be an idea to try the natural extract Tribulus, this is a proven remedy for increasing sex drive, penile strength etc. I intend to do so myself… will let you know how I get on.
JP
AskDocWeb: Tribulus Terrestris has been shown to enhance sexual behavior in animals, apparently by stimulating androgen receptors in the brain.
Subj: Extent of side effects with Avodart
Date: 11/1/2007
I am considering using Avodart (Dutasteride) to treat and enlarged prostate however, I’m not confident in the drug if my sexual function will suffer to an unknown extent for an unknown duration. Could you please advise as to what factors are related in defining the extent of side effects using this product?
William
AskDocWeb: According to the Physician’s Desk Reference (PDR 2008), in the first six months of Avodart usage, 4.7% of men experienced impotence, 3% experienced decreased libido, 1.4% experienced ejaculation disorder, and .5% experienced gynecomastia, an abnormal swelling of one or both breasts. Some people refer to gynecomastia as man-boobs.
Subj: Tolerance to Propecia?
Date: 11/14/2007
In a previous comment you mentioned you could develop a tolerance to Propecia, and thus, I assume, reduce the effects. What do you suggest we do to fight this? Periodically interrupt the medication for short amounts of time?
Joe
AskDocWeb: Some people have tried that in an attempt to avoid developing a tolerance but they haven’t reported any success.
Subj: Conception concerns with Propecia
Date: 11/18/2007
Does propecia effect spermatogensis? I know it takes about 90 days to create new sperm. Could propecia warp the DNA or structure of the sperm potentially causing deformities or miscarriage? Have there been any studies looking at sperm formation while on propecia? I was wondering how long my husband should discontinue use before trying to conceive. Thank you for your time.
Amanda
AskDocWeb: To our knowledge the manufacturer (Merck & Co., Inc.) has not identified any changes in the quality of the sperm of men taking Propecia although a small percentage of men did report a decrease in the quantity of sperm produced. (PDR 2008) The main concern is that women avoid contact with the contents of the pills. They are coated to prevent that because the active ingredient can be absorbed through the skin. The Physician’s Desk Reference makes no mention of any need for a man to discontinue taking Propecia before trying to conceive. That is an additional precaution that is up to you and your husband to consider. As a personal choice, we would discontinue 30 days before trying to conceive.
Subj: Concerned about conception
Date: 11/20/2007
I’ve been taking Propecia for over 3 years now and I’m very satisfied with the results so far. I have a personal question that I just feel too embarrassed to go to a Doctor and ask. My wife, every now and then, when we have oral intercourse, swallows my sperm. We are not planning to have any children now, but I wondered if it was dangerous for her to do that since I do take the medicine. Also, in case we want to have children, how long before should I stop taking it? And how much days till it is not found on a man’s sperm any longer? Thank you so much.
Eddie.
AskDocWeb: In the animal studies performed on rats, they gave the male rats 488 times the human equivalent dose and there were no developmental abnormalities in the offspring from untreated female rats. Read more feedback.
