Subj: Mood swings and anger problems
Date: 1/12/2008
I would like to add my voice to those who suspect that propecia may be causing mood swings anger problems etc. I have been taking propecia for about four years now and it has done the job of preventing further hair loss, yet I cant help thinking that somehow it is responsible for my increase in stress levels or to put it another way, my ability to cope with stressful situations. We all experience stress and anger in everyday life but in my experience I can’t help feeling that my ability to cope with it has somewhat diminished without my life being anymore stressful really. The only thing that has really changed is me taking propecia. I’m still taking propecia and will continue to self monitor this hypothesis, I just thought I’d put it out there.

Subj: Concerned about having a baby
Date: 1/14/2008
My partner has been taking propecia for around 5 years, and recently I discovered I am pregnant. He has since talked to a hair loss specialist at a pharmacy who has concerns that if I have a boy he is likely to have extremely thick hair. I am extremely concerned now that I will have a child with abnormally thick hair, could you confirm whether this is a known side effect, whether it could affect a girl, and whether the hair growth is limited to the head, or does it include other parts of the body. I am probably being slightly neurotic about this but am concerned about having a baby that looks a bit freaky! Many thanks,

Rachel

AskDocWeb: It is possible that the pharmacist was just telling a joke and your husband took it seriously. Propecia has no affect on the hair of children that are conceived by the men who use it.

Subj: Hair loss clinic
Date: 1/17/2008
I’ve recently went to a hairloss clinic in west Covina to see if I would be able to get a prescription for proscar and he tells me that it’s illegal to prescribe if I don’t have prostate cancer… I don’t think he was a doctor because he kept trying to sell me shampoo and saw palleto for 40 bucks…a month. I pass cuz I’m poor… anyway, is it true? What can I do?

Brian

AskDocWeb: It does sound like you were talking to a salesman. You may want to do more research and reading about the causes of hair loss, all that costs you is your time. If you are on any medication you might want to check the list on this page and talk to your doctor about alternatives.

Subj: Birth defects?
Date: 1/18/2008
Hello. I have a very important question, my husband has been on finasteride for the last two years and we have just found out that I am pregnant? Is there a great chance that my baby has a defect? Or will be born with any defects? I am just two weeks into my pregnancy and experiencing already bleeding and pain. Thanks for your reply,

Jasmien

AskDocWeb: The finasteride should not harm your baby unless you come into contact with the powder from a broken pill.

Subj: 6 years after discontinuing Propecia
Date: 1/18/2008
I used Propecia for over 2 years. At first the drug was great. I noticed my hair coming back very strong on the sides and my hair was thickening on top except for the crown. After the second year, I noticed my libido was decreasing, my sperm was clear and I was having a hard time maintaining an erection. A few months later, my voice was becoming more and more feminine. A few months after that, the same signs were still evident and my testicles began to hurt. This was the time that I visited my doctor and he recommended to discontinue the drug.

Once I discontinued the drug, my hair began to gradually loose its thickness, my erectile problems remained in tact, the hurting in my testicles subsided and my voice remained permanently damaged. Today, approximately 6 years after discontinuing the drug, my voice and erectile problems remain and I was diagnosed with cancer. I wouldn’t recommend this drug for anyone.

Subj: Haircut required
Date: 1/23/2008
I am 50 years old and have been taking Propecia for over 5 years after I noticed some initial hair loss. I have never experienced any problems with Propecia. I highly recommend the product and my Barber does as well…hair cut required every 3 weeks.

Subj: Sexual side effects
Date: 1/24/2008
How soon can the sexual side effects start? I feel like I may have decreased libido less than 24 hours after taking it, which seems a bit strange. Is this just placebo?

Evan

AskDocWeb: Even if is a placebo affect the result is still disconcerting. It does seem strange that they would start that fast.

Subj: Is there any side effect?
Date: 1/26/2008
I’m planing to use propecia but I have few doubts i.e. I’m 36yrs old & I’m having diabetics & liver problem so is there any side effect in using propecia? Please advice me in using this pill.

Cyril

AskDocWeb: Please take the time to read About Propecia. The are possible side affects that you should learn about before making a decision.

Subj: Miscarriages
Date: 1/28/2008
I am starting to believe that propecia is related with miscarriage during early pregnancy. I had two miscarriages while my husband took propecia and a successful birth when my husband stopped for a couple months. I hate this.

Subj: 62 year old woman
Date: 1/31/2008
I am a 62 year old woman with what my dermatologist said is male pattern baldness, my hair is very see through on the top, she said she can prescribe propecia for me since I am (way) past childbearing age. Do you recommend it? My mother also had very thin hair in her older years, my fathers hair was always thick and full!

June

AskDocWeb: If your dermatologist thinks it is worth trying then go for it.

Subj: I lost my libido
Date: 2/3/2008
I have been using propecia for about a year now, I think it slowed down my hair loss considerable but around the 8 month time, about the same time I noticed my hair loss slowing down, I lost my libido. Blood test shows that it stems from my pituitary not singleing too my tests to produce testosterone. Doctor thinks its from internal stress I think it might have to do with the propecia.

Subj: Propecia with Provillus?
Date: 2/6/2008
I started taking propecia, I felt like it made me shed a ton, just after 1 month of use. After evaluating many alternatives it looked like it should be the best so I got on again. I’ve also started using Provillus a supplement similar to procerin. Is there danger in taking them both together?

Clint

AskDocWeb: The main ingredient in Provillus is saw palmetto and according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, “Saw palmetto should not be taken with drugs that affect the levels of male sex hormones (androgens), such as finasteride (Proscar®, Propecia®) or flutamide (Eulexin®).”

Subj: Hair loss on my forearms and lower legs
Date: 2/7/2008
I have been on Propecia for 9 months now and I am seeing hair loss on my forearms and lower legs. Is this a side effect and if not what medical condition can cause this?

John

AskDocWeb: That is not one of the listed side effects of Propecia. Radiation poisoning such as chemotherapy can cause hair loss all over the body. This can be extremely upsetting but it is not a sign of anything other than the expected reaction to cancer treatments.

An overactive immune system can cause hair loss all over the body. Many people with this disorder, called alopecia Universalis, also have thyroid, allergy or lupus.

Steroids can cause the loss of hair on the arms and legs.

Certain types of skin ailments such as seborrhea and psoriasis can damage the skin and hair follicles.

There is also a rare inflammation of the follicles called Keratosis Pilaris that will often cause balding, especially on the arms, where the condition can cause hair follicles to become plugged.

Alopecia areata is a condition which causes temporary hair loss in small well-defined patches throughout the body and can occur just about anywhere, including the arms and legs.

Subj: Through my observation
Date: 2/9/2008
Through my observation, opium users seem to be immune to hair loss. Although opium itself is an addictive substance and makes people look unhealthy but there must be some ingredient in it that prevents hair loss. So I think any research on this substance can be useful in treating hair loss. I am 100% sure about this but unfortunately I am not a doctor to do any tests. Sincerely,

Ray

Subj: Good results until the 4th month
Date: 2/11/2008
I have been using propecia for 4 months. I took the risk of using it since the study says only 2% have side effects on sex drive… and that it attacks only DHT not testosterone. Everything was perfect, no side effects, good results for hair falling (not hair regrowth) until the 4th month, suddenly from a day to the other I loose a lot of my sex drive… I though it was probably from not having much sleep until I ran out of supply for one week. Everything was back to normal. I did some research and I land on this site where my fears are described by other users. I did some more research on DHT and it says that it is more responsible for sex drive than testosterone… So if propecia works for hair loss, there is no reason it should not work for lowering the sex drive… unless u are really lucky. And for bodybuilders, I did not loose muscles, but it was harder to gain more muscle mass and to get the same pump as before. Plus I was not able to control my hunger. My suggestion for those that stopped it and are still experiencing side effects, do some cardio (for blood circulation) and some powerlifing (for increasing your testosterone). I do not guarantee it works though. And for my falling hair, I’m on minoxidil and I will try to use procerin (only serum, no more pills!!) to attack the DHT from the exterior.

Subj: Erections just stopped
Date: 2/14/2008
I have been using generic propecia for a week and my erections just stopped. I have stopped using propecia and hope this problem goes away. If you are thinking of using propecia I would recommend you do not.

Subj: My experience with propecia was bad
Date: 2/15/2008
I am now about to start taking procerin but I’m so confused…my experience with propecia was bad reflex hyperandrogencity which make me have powerful ecrection greasy thin hair…so I stopped it…with procerin is there possibility to this to occur or it works by natural different mechanism, thanks,

Amido

AskDocWeb: Those two products are in different categories. Propecia is a drug (you have to have a prescription) and Procerin is a supplement (no prescription needed). Porcerin does not have the sexual side effects as those reported with the use of Propecia. Read more feedback.
