Subj: Weight loss with Propecia?
Date: 6/4/2008
Weight loss as a side effect of propecia: after almost a year on propecia I’ve noticed that I have lose some weight and I became leaner even my friends noticed this. I did not change my diet so my guess is propecia did this. I stopped taking it hoping I’ll regain my weight. Are there reports of this kind of situation? Need your opinion. Thanks,

Herbert

AskDocWeb: There is no indication that Propecia would have any affect on weight, neither weight gain nor weight loss but there are a few reports of each.

Subj: Un-normal
Date: 6/5/2008
I am taking propecia 1.5 months and I noticed that my semen volume increased but by different way. The colour of my semen is going to white to transparent many times. But occasionally white. When it is white the volume of semen is decreased. At the beginning of my taking propecia, my erection is clearly increased not decreased maybe can define viagra effect. But now it is normal. The unnormal thing is the colour of it. Thank you…

Subj: Shedding, migraine headaches, and sensitive scalp
Date: 6/6/2008
I started thinning a bit so my doctor told me to start taking Propecia. It has been only one week of use and I have experienced the following shedding of hair, migraine headaches, sensitive feel of all my hair, pressure points on my scalpe that travels. I have stopped and wish not go back onto Propecia. Will the side effects end and will the hair I shed grow back?

Sev

AskDocWeb: The side effects are likely to end but there is no way to tell if the hair you lost through shedding is gone for good or not.

Subj: Should I?
Date: 6/10/2008
I’m scared of taking the plunge. My problem is that I use my head everyday for work, and I don’t want the “brain fog” some users have reported. That would simply damage my career. I need clear head and motivation every day. As for the sexual side effects. If anything, my sex drive is a bit too high. I’m in generally good health, and I also respond well to medicine. So, reading all the success stories, I’m thinking I shouldn’t have any concerns. I am trying to find that extra motivation to take the first pill. Should I?

AC

AskDocWeb: You have read the reports from others so you know what the possibilities are, so now you have to decide. It’s up to you.

Subj: Erection is strange
Date: 6/15/2008
I’m 21 and my erection is strange since some weeks ago. I can get an erection when I stand up, but not when I lie down. My libido is normal. I stopped finasteride for about two weeks. Can it be a reduced blood flow?

Andrei

AskDocWeb: It does not sound likely. You may want to see a urologist if it continues to be a problem.

Subj: Experiencing sexual difficulties
Date: 6/25/2008
I have been using Propecia for 4 weeks now and after 2 weeks of using it I started experiencing sexual difficulties (e.g. I could not have an erection or I did not have any desire for women & etc). I talked to my doctor about this and he told me to use it for another 2-3 weeks and these side effects will usually go away. But it just keeps getting worse, its now been 4 weeks and at the moment I’m experiencing TOTOAL loss of semen! Should I give up using the product or should I keep at it hoping that the side effects will go away? Can it create a long term problem?

Zakk

AskDocWeb: Sorry Zakk, this website is not a substitute for your doctor’s advice. If you aren’t satisfied with your doctor’s advice we suggest you consult with a urologist.

Subj: Propecia VS Provilius
Date: 7/14/2008
Propecia VS Provilius, which of these is proven to be better? How can I order finasteride or how do I get it?

Manny

AskDocWeb: There isn’t enough feedback on Provillus yet for a meaningful comparison with Procerin. Finasteride is a prescription drug (Propecia) and needs your doctor’s approval before you get it at your local pharmacy.

Subj: Hairline worst with Rogaine
Date: 7/14/2008
Hi! I’m 22 and was experiencing a receiding hairline (nothing too crazy) especialy on the temples. Been using Propecia for 1 year now and didn’t notice any changes, but at least my hair was the same. Then I started using Rogaine Foam like 5 months ago and saw after finishing the first bottle that my hairline and temple were shedding sooo bad! After freaking out I decided to stop it but my hairline and temple was getting thinner and thinner. Now I’m giving another shot to rogaine, cause I read that the shedding phase is normal, but I’ve been re using it for 3 weeks now, and I’m sooo depressed, my hairline is sooooo thin, I can see through my hair my scalp now and my hairline is receiding more and more. Is it normal?! Could it be like an allegic reaction? Could it be too harsh for my hair? Otherwise how long do you need to wait for that shedding phase to go away and get thick hair?! I know that Rogaine is not supposed to work for hairline and temples (where I am using the product) but I read good feedback from people on line. I never thought that my hairline would be worst with Rogaine otherwise I would never have tried it. I’m not even sure I’ll get my hairline back. Thanks!

Chris

AskDocWeb: Remember Chris, stress is also a cause of hair loss so getting stressed out only makes things worse. The signs of an allergic reaction are difficulty breathing, closing of your throat, difficulty swallowing, hives, and/or swelling of your lips, tongue, or face. There isn’t enough data about shedding yet to tell how long it will last when it does happen but several men reported 4 to 6 weeks. It doesn’t happen to everyone.

Subj: Normal hair loss?
Date: 7/15/2008
I am on generic Finasteride 1 mg for about 1 year with 4 or 5 breaks which lasted long not more than 1 week. It did stop my hair loss but it didn’t help in any regrowth. For over a month I am on finasteride as well as procerin. Now and then I notice hair falling after bath or when I rub my head with a towel. To count I shud say I loose aroung 50 strans everyday. Is it normal?

Arin

AskDocWeb: Yes, normal hair loss ranges between 50 and 150 strands of hair per day.

Subj: Propecia side effects
Date: 7/16/2008
Propecia – personal side effects: Severe anxiety, panic attacks, negative thoughts, depression, brain fog. Effected not only myself, but my family. This was not me. Only took for three months. Took much longer for side effects to subside. In my opinion a dangerous drug. May not have the same effect on everyone, but these side effects seem to be common enough to be documented and taken seriously. At this point seem to be being ignored.

Subj: Shedding
Date: 7/18/2008
I recently switched for three days from propecia to proscar after using propecia for six years. After one week I am shedding a lot and have now switched back, will the shedding be reversed and how long will it last.

Dave

AskDocWeb: It is likely that the shedding will stop within a month or so but the only way to find out for sure is to wait and see.

Subj: Back pains
Date: 7/24/2008
I’ve been on propecia bout 9 months now and have been getting terrible back pains.

Subj: Propecia and birth defects?
Date: 7/28/2008
My husband just started taking Propecia. We are also trying to conceive. Can Propecia be carried through the sperm and cause birth defects?

Sharon

AskDocWeb: The manufacturer says there is no risk of birth defects for a woman who becomes pregnant by a man using Propecia.

Subj: Increased libido, mood swings, anxiety and insomnia
Date: 7/29/2008
I started taking Proscar tablets divided into four based on prescription from a doctor. I was of the hope it would help with hairloss and psoriasis of the scalp and was combined with topical quateroids. The initial reaction was fantastic. After just a couple of weeks my hair stopped falling out and the tingling, pain and itching which accompanied (which I associated with DHT) all stopped and the psoriasis all but dissapeared. However after about 8 months of taking it every day my nipples began to get puffy and the hair loss and what is worse is all of the symptoms I started taking it to stop are returning. To top it off, I am getting increased libido, mood swings, anxiety and insomnia. Are these related? Is this my body over compensating for the presence of the drug? Am I becoming tolerant to the drug and should I stop taking it?

Simon

AskDocWeb: We suggest you use your side effects as a reason to consult with your doctor to assess your condition and decide what to do from there.

Subj: Propecia questions
Date: 8/1/2008
I have started taking propecial for 5 years already and it effects really good to me both stopping hair loss and growing new. Unfortunately I started to slow down propecia in the last year and stopped taking it for 5 months during the period I did my frontal hair transplant. Recently I am attacking by 100 to 200 falling hair each day, then I start to take propecia again. My questions are 1. Is it normal case to lose lots of hair after stopping propecia? 2. Will the propecia regrow my currently hair loss? 3. Do you think I will get a good result as my first time using propecia? 4. How long does it take to see the result?

Jay

AskDocWeb: Yes, it is normal to go through a period of rapid hair loss after stopping Propecia. If you started taking it five years ago and stopped then this is your second time. We would expect results to be similar to your first experience but that also depends on your age. You may see results in the first three to six months but according to the manufacturer it could also take up to a year.

Subj: Propecia is responsible for this
Date: 8/2/2008
I tried Propecia for 2 weeks when I was 17, but stopped because I couldn’t get erections. Three years later I tried it again because I read that sexual side effects disappear with continued use. I started it and the SEXUAL SIDE EFFECTS DID INDEED DISAPPEAR AFTER ABOUT A MONTH OF USE. I was ecstatic. HOWEVER, 3 years into using it, I suddenly lost my libido and erections. It happened so acutely and suddenly, that I thought I was just tired from work or something. I soon lost morning erections and sexual images would not stimulate me at all anymore. I knew that the only time in my life that I had experienced sexual dysfunction was when I first started the propecia, so I tried stopping the propecia. As expected, my sex drive came surging back for about a week, but for some reason it crashed again. NOW IT HAS BEEN 13 MONTHS SINCE I QUIT PROPECIA AND I HAVE NO LIBIDO OR IMPROVEMENT. I have seen many doctors, and all my hormones fall into normal range, so doctors cannot find a remedy. They conclude that it is due to “stress” or that this is psychological. Well, honestly I wish it really was psychological, but too bad it is not. Propecia is responsible for this. If you enjoy life, don’t use propecia.
