Subj: Anxiety, brain fog and low libido
Date: 11/2/2008
I’m sorry but the beast has finally been unleashed. I have been on propecia since I was 15 years old (10 years). There is no doubt it has stopped my hair loss. When I look back at my life however, I’ve had anxiety and brain fog (I believed this before I even heard it was a side affect). I would just wake up groggy and shaky. I’ve just tried to continue my day to day. Now I realise that I haven’t had a morning erection in 10 years or a spontaneous one. My erections may not be as hard as they could be either. Oh yeah and I’ve had chances to sleep with many beautiful women and not even bothered!! Low Libido. I’ve finally put all the peices together. I am an intelligent and together guy. I’ve battled these effects for a decade and I realise now that there was nothing I could do because the anxiety was created by physical side effects in my body. I constnatly felt shaky for absolutely no reason and I just put it down to the trauma of hair loss at a young age. I’m gonna quit this drug and I guarantee I will be back here to let you know. My best mate’s dad is a doc and he didn’t suggest I use it 10 years ago as there is evidence it effects the cognitive function in rats (published journal articles). I tell you one thing. I would much rather have my penis working and my mental facility than have hair.

Subj: What is the problem?
Date: 11/2/2008
I have been taking Propecia For 6 months at the first 5 months my hair look grate and stop falling down. I was very happy but the last month I have noticed that my hair start to fall down again? And I’m so sad? What is the problem is propecia didn’t work for me and way it was working good before.

Khalid

AskDocWeb: It’s not talked about much but sometimes people develop a tolerance for a drug and it stops working. There is no way to know why it stopped working but even the manufacturer admits that Propecia doesn’t work for everyone.

Subj: Question about Propecia
Date: 11/3/2008
I am thinking about using Propecia and had a question. Is Propecia only intended to maintain/grow hair on the crown area of the head or does it also work in maintain hair in the frontal area of the head (the hairline). From a lot of the responses to the reviews I’ve read, I am confused with it’s exact purpose.

Matthew

AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer it is used to treat male pattern baldness or hair loss on the top of the head and mid-scalp areas. Some men have reported growth in the front hairline but that doesn’t happen with everyone.

Subj: Maximumhair
Date: 11/7/2008
I’ve been using Maximum Hair’s treatment – Maximumhair – for 18 months and have had little to no improvement and am still losing hair at the same rate as before. It basically involves using a laser, rubbing on regrowth lotion twice a day, using ice drops every few days and taking 2 tablets a day. It has cost an extortionate amount of money to keep going and I’ve been told by Maximum Hair that if I stop using the treatment I risk losing more hair. First of all can you tell me if this is true, or are they just saying it so that I keep paying the money? Is it too much of a risk to give up the treatment? Also, after about a year on the treatment I was told I should start using propecia too. I was annoyed about this because I’d paid a lot of money for a treatment already that didn’t seem to be working. Is it an option to give up the Maximum Hair treatment and use propecia instead (because I can’t afford both)? What do you suggest?

David

AskDocWeb: The only reason we know of why your hair loss might increase after discontinuing a hair loss product is when that product was preventing the loss of hair. If it wasn’t working in the first place then there will be no increase in hair loss when you discontinue using it. Not knowing your age, we suggest you get a physical to make sure there isn’t a medical reason for your hair loss. And before deciding on a product, read what users are saying about side effects. That may save you from some nasty surprises.

Subj: Pain, testicles and prostatitis
Date: 11/8/2008
Hello, after using Propecia for 1 week I started having some kind of annoyance at my testicles. My dermatologist told me to stop until the pain was gone. I stopped but my annoyance became a pain and was not supportable 3 days after stopping Propecia. Furthermore, the pain was not localized (not anymore at the testicles, but higher near the prostates). I decided then to go the urologist and I was diagnosed with abacterial prostatitis (the bacterium was not found). Both the urologist and the dermatologist said the prostatitis was unlikely caused by the Propecia.

After two months from the diagnosis while fighting the prostatitis with antibiotics, my urologist told me that I could try to take the Propecia again. I started 1 week ago and exactly yesterday I started again to have the same kind of annoyance as two months ago (like the first time, my pains started after 1 week of using Propecia!).

I am thinking of stopping to take Propecia again and not to take it anymore. Do you think can Propecia cause prostatitis? Or can for everybody the pain at the testicles be the reflection of an inflammation of the prostate? (I know that the prostatitis manifests with pain at the testicles). Last question: from the comments of this website somebody says that the pain disappeared after keeping taking Propecia. I was wondering if I should try to continue for some days or stop it completely. Thanks a lot!

Davide
AskDocWeb: Swelling of the prostate gland (prostatitis) is typically caused by a bacterial infection and is treated with an antibiotic. Prostatitis is not listed as one of the possible side effects. According to the manufacturer, side effects went away in “most men who continued taking Propecia” but not all. The decision to continue or stop is something you should discuss with your doctor.

Subj: Side effects continue
Date: 11/8/2008
I experienced extreme fatigue, anxiety, depression, gynecomastia, apathy, anorgasma, penile fibrosis, penile numbness, loss of nighttime erections and endless hormonal imbalances. I took this drug for 1 year and 4 months. The anxiety and depression affected me almost immediately although I was completely clueless as to the cause. I cycled through every single anti-depressant and ADHD medication trying to solve this problem. It wasn’t until I stopped the medication that I realized it was the Propecia. THESE SIDE EFFECTS HAVE NOT SUBSIDED AT ALL SEVEN MONTHS LATER! I would not wish this on my worst enemy. This drug has literally destroyed my life. I know that no one wants to lose their hair and look unattractive, but just imagine how attractive you will be if you are one of the unfortunate few of us that gets gynecomastia, penile fibrosis, and inability to ejaculate (I CANNOT EVEN MASTRUBATE TO ORGASM after taking this drug). If you value your life then I strongly suggest you find some other way!

This drug propecia is the biggest sh*t in pharma industry. Don’t fell in trape to what the Merck says. It really does have very severe side effects like dec sensation to almost numbness of genitals and dec penis and testis size. How do I know? Cause I am a victim myself.

Subj: Propecia, laser hair removal, and Nisin shampoo
Date: 11/13/2008
I am 41 and have been using Propecia for nearly 2 years and had good success (thicker hair, crown still much thinner but improving slowly). I’ve had some minor side effects (nearly zero libido for the first 2 months or so but fine after that, and a decrease in the volume of ejaculate — as well as a thickening which means that it does not “shoot” as it used to). The side effects are tolerable for now. However, I recently visited a laser hair removal center to consider having some light/moderate back hair removed. Their opinion was that if you are taking Propecia, then the treatments won’t work (and explicitly will not give you their standard 2-year guarantee). My understanding was that Propecia targets male pattern baldness, and no other body hair. After 2 years, I have not noticed any unusual body hair growth (back or otherwise). Do you agree with the laser center’s assessment? Finally, I notice that you’ve commented on Nisin shampoos/products. I’ve been thinking of giving them a try. Is there any risk of using them while still on Propecia? Would you recommend getting off Propecia first before starting the shampoo? Many thanks,

Tony

AskDocWeb: With laser hair removal, there is a small percentage of cases (0.6%) where the process seems to act as a stimulant for hair growth. Aside from that we have no data on the results of laser hair removal while using Propecia. There are no reports of any problems with using Nisim while taking Propecia however, we are still collecting feedback on this and have yet to form an opinion.

Subj: Shedding
Date: 11/14/2008
I was wondering, will you have increased hair-loss for the first month or two of propecia?

Nathan

AskDocWeb: It doesn’t happen to everyone but shedding during the first few weeks has been reported to occur with all of the hair loss products that we’ve looked at.

Subj: My libido dropped
Date: 11/15/2008
I started taking Propecia in early December 2000…almost immediately, my libido dropped, I lost my morning erection, and my semen dropped dramatically, and was of a watery sustance that I had never seen before…However, vain that I am, I kept taking it till April 2005…well over 3 and half years on, nothing has come back to normal…and I have not had a long term relationship since well…December 2000….I am now 37, and I am starting to accept the fate that I will never get into a long term relationship again, and will have no kids…This has preoccupied me EVERY DAY FOR THE LAST 8 YEARS….If you are considering taking this drug…PLEASE DON’T….Better be bald then lose one of the best aspects that life has to offer, SEX…

Subj: Weak erections, low libido and gynocomastia
Date: 11/18/2008
I went for hair implants 9 months ago and was so happy with the results. I started using propecia after the implants to keep what I had. The combo of propecia and the implants were a ‘god send’. I thought that this whole battle of balding was finally over. My confidence shot up..so happy…8 months into propecia I started developing gynocomastia. I was advised by my specialist physician to stop using propecia, since then the swelling of the breasts have decreased however the puffy nipples still remain (which make you look like a teenage girl!) this unfortunately doesn’t go away when stopping the drug. I have now been forced to search for a surgical alternative to have the hardened breast tissue removed and return my nipples to their normal state. Since stopping (6 weeks ago) I have noticed my hair falling out rapidly and I can now notice the balding again. The implants are still there but in a few months are going to look stupid when the hair behind the implants starts falling out.

I also noticed that since stopping my libido has returned with a vengence. I was aware that this was a side effect but was prepared to deal with it, however I didn’t actually realise the extent to which the drug inhibited my libido. The combination of the weak erections, low libido and gynocomastia is a bit too much for me to handle. I don’t know what to do about the hairloss returning…started using regaine…the stuff is shocking and has done nothing to stop the hair falling out. After the surgery I’ll reconsider propecia…if they remove the breast tissue then I think I’m in the clear with regard to gyno. Was just shocked that it took so long for this side effect to come into play…keep a watch out for it guys…trust me.
