Subj: No effects from propecia
Date: 11/18/2008
I have seen little to no effects caused from propecia. Not only has it not cured the balding but it has not prevented it from spreading further. I hope attempts by other patients go better then mine.

Subj: Blepharitis
Date: 12/4/2008
I have been taking Propecia for almost a full year now. I have had no side effects. But just recently I have developed a really annoying eye condition called blepharitis. Could this be a side effect of taking Propecia?
Jeff
AskDocWeb: Several men have reported dry eyes but blepharitis is not listed as a side effect of Propecia. Blepharitis is an acute or, most often, chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins and may result in the loss of eyelashes (madarosis) or misdirected growth of eyelashes (trichiasis). There are both bacterial and nonbacterial causes: staphylococcal infection, seborrheic dermatitis, dry eye, rosacea, and meibomian gland dysfunction. A reminder from Ferri’s Clinical Advisor says that treatment should be continued for 1 month after all signs of inflammation have disappeared, otherwise the inflammation may redevelop.
Subj: Forgetting to take a dose
Date: 12/6/2008
I’ve been on propecia now for 8 years with great results, with little to no side effects although the last 2 years I’ve been skipping or forgetting to take a dose. I never double up for missed dose. My question is, can this be unhealthy?
Dean
AskDocWeb: In the 6 plus years that we have been tracking feedback about Propecia there have been no reports of problems caused by missing a pill.
Subj: PSA
Date: 12/7/2008
Propecia How does it impact a PSA? Thanks.
BB
AskDocWeb: Taking Propecia reduces the total serum PSA concentration which may result in inaccurate PSA test results. That is one of the tests used to discover prostate cancer. In order to avoid inaccurate PSA test results, your doctor will need to establish a new baseline value to assess potential cancer-related changes in PSA.
Subj: I got lucky
Date: 12/10/2008
Propecia works for me. There is so many negative comments about this drug, but I started losing my hair at age 20. I have been on propecia for a year and a half and it has stopped all thinning and has grown back a noticeable amount of hair. There were side effects in the first month such as decreased sex drive, but after that everything is fine and I do not feel a decrease of testosterone like men talk about. I feel fine, it works, but it’s probably not for everyone, I got lucky.

Subj: I don’t see any results
Date: 12/11/2008
I started to take propecia about 5 months ago. Along with taking propecia I got hair transplants to my crown area and my two sides of my temple. I don’t see any results to much on the crown area but my parents said they do. I have no side affects but was wondering if they could come down the road. Also I’m only 18 still. Thanks.
Mike
AskDocWeb: The manufacturer says that you may have to take it up to a year before you see results. We think that if results aren’t seen within 6 months then they are highly unlikely.
Subj: Sex drive not affected…but
Date: 12/14/2008
I started taking Propecia roughly five years ago when I was twenty. I started it a few months after I had finished with Accutane (the acne medicine) because one of the temporary side effects was hair loss. I was paranoid and took Propecia until I was nearly twenty three. It’s been two years since I’ve taken it and I wish I never had. My sex drive was never affected by Propecia. However, I have lost significant size in my penis. I have lost an inch in length and a little over an inch in girth. You can imagine the psychological effects this has had on me- I might as well not have a sex drive. It is difficult for me to remain erect without constant stimulation and women have taken notice. Being the good guy that I am, I assure them it isn’t their fault. I have seen four or five doctors about this and not one could help me. Imagine my bemusement when the specialist said to me, “Well, it could get better, it could stay the same, or it could get worse.” That’s from a guy whose job it is to tell me why! Don’t take this medicine- it just isn’t worth it.

Subj: How long does Propecia work??
Date: 12/15/2008
Does Propecia continue to grow hair after 2 years? Thanks.
Bill
AskDocWeb: Sorry Bill, we have yet to locate any data on how long Propecia continues to be effective.
Subj: 3 years
Date: 12/16/2008
I’ve used this product for 3 years now and I still have the same sex drive I had before using it, so I guess it depends on the individual, I’m now 43 and planning another child, I’ll keep you posted.

Subj: Mood swings and irritability
Date: 12/18/2008
I have taken Propecia on and off since it came out in 1997. It did drastically slow my hair loss for most of that time, however, I had to stop taking it because of the mood swings and irritability issues. With all due respect, I have seen this effect posted several times on here and have not seen a real response to it yet. I stopped taking it for two years because I became so frustrated, and was able to stop my antidepressants. Just recently I decided to try it again and over the past week I have almost lost my job. People around me are stunned at how out of control my temper is and how irritable I am. My doctors can’t make a connection, but someone suggested that it is causing more “unconverted” testostrone to be present in my body. Please let me and the several others on here know what your insight is. Thanks,
Chris
AskDocWeb: We suggest to anyone taking Propecia that you read the package insert each time you renew your prescription for current information on side effects. As far as we know mood swings and irritability have not been added to the list of possible side effects. Mood swings, irritability, and temper control do seem to be an issue for some men but side effects are only listed when they occur in 1% or more of patients.
Subj: The problem got worse and worse
Date: 12/19/2008
I started using Propecia 9 years ago at the age of 21. At that time, I had an incredible sex drive. Not even close to any problems. Two years later, I began to notice some lack of hardness. Fearing I would not be able to perform, I started taking Viagra to mask the symptoms. It generally worked for about 5 years although the problem got worse and worse and I occasionally could not perform, even with Viagra. I had to take more and more over time. Now it is at the point where I no longer get erections during the day or at night. I am finally going to make the choice to lose my hair to get normal functioning back. I just hope it isn’t too late. If you are experiencing any symptoms, stop. Don’t let yourself end up like me.

Subj: Increased hair loss
Date: 12/28/2008
I have been using propecia for only 2 months or so but it seems that my hair loss has picked up dramatically since taking it! Is it possible that procecia can make my hair loss quadruple? It sure seems like it anyways. It has me worried and I may stop taking it.
Jack
AskDocWeb: Several men have reported shedding more hair during the first month or two on Propecia. Judging by the feedback, this seems to be common for a small percentage of men no matter what hair loss product they use.
Subj: No sexual desire
Date: 12/28/2008
My boyfriend has no sexual desires what-so-ever, thanks to your product. I think you need to do a re-assesment before you release more into the market. All balding males beware. Dont mess with Propecia or consider remaining celibate for the rest of your lives.

AskDocWeb: There are consumer reports on many different products here but none of them are ours. Thanks for sharing your experience with Propecia.
Subj: Complete impotence
Date: 1/1/2009
I was on propecia for about a month and a half and was in a sexual relationship at the time. I suffered complete impotence after about a month and stopped taking it. It has been over a year now and I still suffer from impotence issues. I can now get an erection again but I cannot hold it for very long and I feel as if I’ve lost control of the muscles in that region of my body somewhat. I did kegel exercises as well. Now they are difficult.

Subj: Itching problem
Date: 1/6/2009
I was taking Propecia for 1 week and since then I can not stop itching. I have stopped taking it for 9 days now. I know one of the side effects from Propecia is itching. Do you know how long will it take to get out of my system? Also do you recommend any medication to stop the itching? Please note that I am allergic to Aspirin. Thank you!
aaa
AskDocWeb: It may take up to a month to leave the system completely. Cortisone is a good choice to relieve itching and is recommended by most pharmacists.
Subj: Significant re-grwoth in all areas
Date: 1/8/2009
I’ve been on propecia for over a year and the results are mind boggling. I’ve noticed significant re-grwoth in all areas (Including the temples). Haven’t experienced any side effects what so ever. I guess I’m just one of the lucky ones that reponds well to the drug. It’s a scientific breakthrough and a freakin miracle.

Subj: Undesirable side affects
Date: 1/10/2009
Thanks for taking the time to help everyone looking for answers! I started taking propecia three weeks ago, and have definately noticed undesirable side affects. The worst is the mood swings. My wife says I have less patience than usual, and I feel like I am constantly on edge. My anger is out of control, I swing in and out of depression, and I dont have the motivation that I used to. The sexual side affect was minor for me. The effects on my everyday happiness were enough for me to discontinue treatment. The worst part is that these side effects are NOT listed by propecia’s creator, so I am going to fight my best battle to get the money back I put into propecia’s little white lie.

AskDocWeb: No one in the USA gets a refund for any prescription drug, I think there may be a law against it.
Subj: Hormone levels
Date: 1/18/2009
Is it possible for Propecia to affect hormone levels(testosterone)? I have had a loss of libido and noticed a change in some other things that make me wonder if that is whats going on.
Billy
AskDocWeb: Propecia results in an increase in testosterone levels in both the blood (a systemic effect) as well as the scalp. As a result of taking Propecia, the testosterone that would normally have been converted into DHT remains as testosterone. In a study conducted in Turkey, patients received 5 mg a day of Propecia. At month 3, the testosterone level had increased by 15%. In that study, Propecia caused erectile dysfunction in 22% of patients by month 3 and 33% of patients by month 6. (Reported by Science Direct, April 1998)
