Subj: Sexually bankrupt
Date: 7/29/2004
After a year of taking Propecia, I noticed that I am sexually bankrupt. I no longer dream of sex, but about clouds. If you want to keep your manhood, discontinue Proscar.

Subj: Propecia and acne
Date: 7/30/2004
I was thinking about taking propecia to stop hair loose before it gets really bad or noticeable. My question is, does it effect the same Hormones that cause acne? Being a former acne sufferer, is there a chance it could flare up my old acne?

Chris

AskDocWeb: Although not listed as a “known” side effect, some users have reported small blackheads on forehead and increased skin oil across face. Two users report suffering from acne 6 months after stopping their Propecia intake. This is probably not a big problem but it is still a potential risk.

Subj: Widow’s peak
Date: 7/31/2004
Hello. I have read the propecia doesn’t work for receding hairlines starting from the temples. This may be a silly question, but does that mean the “widow’s peak” area? Thank you.

Michael

AskDocWeb: Yes, that would be your hairline from the right temple across the top of your head to your left temple.

Subj: Finpecia
Date: 8/3/2004
I am using a cheaper alternative (finpecia). I am 22 and started experiencing heavy hair loss about 8 months ago. I have been taking the drug for about 45 days now. I have seen no change, maybe even more hair loss. I have been trying to find other people using this Finpecia but I can’t seem to find any reviews. Is this shedding going to stop??? I am going crazy. Does this stuff work??

Michael

AskDocWeb: It is our understanding that Finpecia is an illegal generic version of Propecia made in India. That is, it is a federal crime for residents of the U.S.A. to import this counterfeit drug. Since we live in the U.S.A. we have not ordered, nor tested Finpecia to find out if it actually contains the same ingredients as Propecia.

Subj: Weak erections
Date: 8/11/2004
I’ve been taking propecia for a few years now and it has stopped new hair loss. I have noticed some sexual side effects though. For instance, my erection is weak and comes and goes. I am already on the small side, so this is a problem for me.

Subj: Low sperm count
Date: 8/11/2004
My husband began taking propecia in April of 2001 and in September that same year we conceived our first child on our first attempt. In December of 2003 we again attempted to conceive, however after 8 months of trying have been unsuccessful. We have both been checked out and I’m fine however my husband’s sperm count falls below the low normal range and 80% of his sperm are motile or slow moving. We were informed that propecia may affect libido but were not informed nor can find any reference to this side effect (reduce sperm count/motility) in the product information or CPS. What is known of this? Should men planning to have families be informed prior to taking this medication so they can make an informed choice. My husband has stopped taking the propecia for 4 months should this condition reverse itself?

Tracy

AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer, the men who experienced this condition returned to normal after discontinuing Propecia. They did not, however, say how long that took. There are many people who would like to know how you come out on this. Please let us know.

Subj: Eyebrow hair loss from Propecia
Date: 8/12/2004
I’m 42 and have been using Propecia for two years now. It seemed to be working but recently it seems the effectiveness has worn out and my hair loss has progressed. I will try Procerin but my concern is that several months ago I had noticed eyebrow loss which I assume is from taking the Propecia. There has been no regrowth. Does taking Propecia cause eyebrow loss and will taking Procerin (combined with Propecia) significantly add to eyebrow loss?

Keith

AskDocWeb: One other person asked about the possibility of losing eyebrow hair, but you are the first to say you are losing eyebrows. This kind of hair loss was not mentioned in the clinical trials of Propecia.

Subj: Anything to worry about?
Date: 8/13/2004
I am a 56 year old female who has had thinning hair (female pattern baldness) since the age of 30. I have taken Propecia for 2 years with great results. Is there anything I should be worried about?

Edith

AskDocWeb: We know of nothing to worry about but, care should be taken to keep this drug out of the hands of women who are of child bearing age.

Subj: Propecia zits
Date: 8/14/2004
I took proscar, divided it into 1mg pieces, and took if for 4 months. Hair loss stopped but also developed tons of deep zits around my jaw….wondering if I lowered the dose that would help reduce side effects.

John

AskDocWeb: Yes, usually if you lower the dosage, you can expect reduced side effects.

Subj: Long term side effects of Propecia
Date: 8/17/2004
My FiancĂ©e has been looking for research to the answer to this question “Long-term side effects of using Propecia for 5 years or longer? Should he stop taking it? When should he stop taking it? Is there a certain amount of years that a person can take Propecia before it has negative side effects?” Thanks

Angela

AskDocWeb: That would be handy if everyone reacted the same way, but unfortunately, nature is more complex than that. For some men, side effects never show up. For others, they occur within hours. There is no way we know of to tell ahead of time how long or if he will experience side effects.

Subj: Multiple approach
Date: 8/19/2004
I am taking a combination of medicines, vitamins and minerals to try and combat my recent hair loss. I am using Propecia, Procerin, Shen Min and Biotin, along with my daily multivitamin. Can a combination of these cancel out each other’s effectiveness? Is this a safe regimen? Is it an advisable one?

Dan

AskDocWeb: As far as we know, this combination of products will not cancel out each other’s effectiveness. But is it safe? Please read our
Report on Propecia
and all the feedback from men who have used this product.

Subj: Worried about Finpecia
Date: 8/20/2004
I am 23 years old and my hair loss began 2 years ago. The first year I used Regaine 5% Minoxidil (it’s mentioned as Rogaine in some sites). After noticing that it didn’t reduce my hair loss, I started taking Generic Propecia (Finpecia) which I buy from an Indian Company (Cipla). I just read a user’s review in which he complained that it hasn’t the same result as (branded) Propecia and I get a bit worried. I have not experienced any sexual side effects during the 8 month period of using Finpecia. I will wait for another 4 months, to complete the one year period (recommended for a Finasteride treatment) and if my situation does not improve, I am thinking of replacing Finpecia with Procerin. I can’t afford both Regaine and branded Propecia, but Rogaine and (branded) Procerin is affordable. My actual question is if Procerin has better success rates than Propecia or if it has slightly lower success rates and is just recommended to those who complain for sexual side effects. Finally, I would like to ask you if you are aware of any other DHT inhibitor drugs (or any other hair loss treatment in general) or is Propecia and Procepia the best things science has to offer us right now. Thank you anyway,

Stamatis

AskDocWeb: We will have our recommendation on Procerin online in January, 2005. The success rate of Propecia is way above everything else on the market. It is the number one drug for hair loss. You may consider trying Advecia, a supplement that provides the nutrients your body needs to grow hair.

Subj: Impotence?
Date: 8/21/2004
Can propecia cause impotence? If it is, is that a permanent damage that can not be cure. If you stop taking propecia, will you be back to normal? What is the solution, if you become impotence? Please back to me as soon as possible. I am waiting for your answer. Thank you,

Ujjal

AskDocWeb: Impotence and other sexual side effects did show up in about 2% of the men in the clinical trials. The manufacturer says those men returned to normal after discontinuing Propecia. According to the feedback we have received here, that may take some time, could be months.

Subj: Permanent damage?
Date: 8/24/2004
Is propecia cause a permanent damage, problem like impotence, decrease libido? Or it is a temporary problem? Once you stop taking it, you go back to normal?

Greg

AskDocWeb: See our answer above. We need to hear from men who have returned to normal after experiencing sexual side effects. If that’s you, please tell us how long it took to return to normal.

Subj: Taking half the dose
Date: 8/25/2004
Would be grateful for advice. I’m 28 years old, have been using regaine and now considering propecia, however I’m apprehensive due to the potential side effects. If I decide to take propecia, I’m thinking of taking one tablet every other day to reduce the risks of side effects, as the dose would essentially be 0.5mg per day. Obviously the benefit would be reduced and would take longer to appear, which I’m ok with, but what I would like to know is whether it is safe take this kind of regimen. Thanks for your help. Kind regards,

Sam

AskDocWeb: As long as you understand on all the warnings, we have no problem with taking half the dosage as it would reduce the chance of sexual side effects.

Subj: Slow recovery
Date: 8/25/2004
I took Propecia for about 5 weeks with out noticing any side effects. I actually believe I was a bit more horny while taking Propecia. Then Erectile Dysfunction set in abruptly. So, I stopped taking it. It’s been a very slow recovery. A few weeks after stopping the Propecia, my libido would increase and I would start getting slightly hard. But, it’s been 5 months now and I’m still not getting max hard, so I don’t stay hard for long. But, of course with some manipulation, I could cum and the normal amount of semen would be released. The doctor I went to didn’t recommend this medicine for reasons like this, so I bought it off some web site because I knew 5 people taking the drug had only good things to say about it.

I’m just wondering how long I have to wait before I’ll be normal. Will I be normal? I would so much rather be bald then suffer these problems. It’s just embarrassing to be with girls now. I actually did get blood tests before taking the medication and everything was normal. How long did other people have to wait before getting max hard again? I’m just worried that I’m gonna be like this for the rest of my life. Thank you.

Ed

Subj: Propecia and impotence
Date: 9/12/2004
Would you please tell me, if propecia cause impotence, is that permanent or temporary? Please reply me back as soon as possible. thank you

Greg

AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer, just under one percent of men experienced impotence and all regained their ability after discontinuing Propecia. It is temporary but they don’t say how long it takes to recover.

Subj: Stopped taking proscar because libido took a dump
Date: 9/13/2004

I started taking the proscar tablets divided into 5, and for the first month I didn’t notice any side effects, and I reacted to it quite quickly, noticing no more hair-loss, and after a little longer, fuzz regrowth! THEN my libido took a dump. Erections are few and far between now. I have stopped taking the drug. Will my normal libido return??

Paul

AskDocWeb: The manufacturer says yes. You could help others out by letting us know how long this takes.

Subj: Accelerated hair loss
Date: 9/13/2004
I have been taking Propecia for about 2-3 weeks. In the last week-or-so I’ve noticed GREATLY accelerated hair loss. Why is this happening and when should I expect it to stop?

Sean

AskDocWeb: It seems that your hair goes through different growth phases and this tipically lasts 4 to 6 weeks.

Subj: Propecia stopped working
Date: 9/15/2004
I have been on Propecia for about six months and it was working great, lots of thicker hair growing back. However it has now seem to stop and my hair is thinning very quickly. I am still taking propecia but am worried as it stopped working when I got a new batch on line. Could I have been given crap stuff? I have also been under a lot of stress.

Andy

AskDocWeb: If you purchased from an American pharmacy you probably have the right “stuff.” The main problem we see with buying from a pharmacy is the lack of accountability. There is nothing you can do if a foreign pharmacy rips you off.
