Subj: Worried about keeping the hair I have
Date: 1/22/2009
I am 22 and I have been taking propecia and it has given me a lot of erectile dysfunction including PE and loss of sex drive. Can you recommend something else that does not have these side effects? I am really only worried about keeping the hair I have not growing back the hair I’ve lost if that helps. Thanks!
Tom
AskDocWeb: Based on the all the feedback from those using hair loss products we recommend Procerin.
Subj: Liver problems?
Date: 1/21/2009
Hi, I’ve been taking a quarter of the propeca tablet daily for just over a year. Even though it has worked nicely and I have a full head of hair, I have since gone for a blood test and it showed adverse results. Granted that I have high cholesterol, but I don’t have a fatty liver, and I don’t drink that often. Does propecia have any side effects on the liver? Thanks
Keith
AskDocWeb: If you currently have any liver disease or problems, it is possible that you can still take Propecia but make sure you tell your doctor. You may need a lower dose or special monitoring during therapy.
Subj: Erectile dysfunction
Date: 1/23/2009
I might be one of the strangest cases on this forum. I’m 20 years old now with a full head of hair thanks to propecia. I started taking it 4 years ago and I can safely say that without it I would be completely bald. Male pattern baldness runs to rapidly in my family, I started balding when I was 14 years old! I was put on propecia in the beginning of my sophmore year of Highschool while my hair was at a stage of rapid hairloss. Although all of this has been a miracle for males in medical science, there is still the occasion when propecia gets to me during sexual intercourse. For awhile I denied the fact that propecia even had a role to play in my erectile dysfunction but after it happening a few times and comparing it to the times I had intercourse without taking the pill, it was obvious this product has some issues. But that’s the sacrifice we make I guess. I just want to know if there are any other medications out there simply focused on maintaining the amount of hair you now have. I believe my hair has stopped regrowing but I’d really like to find a way to ween myself off of 4 and a half years of propecia. I know I can’t be on this all my life and spending 75 dollars a month as a college student on a drug is so hard.

AskDocWeb: If you limit yourself to prescription drugs then there is nothing currently available that we can recommend for long term use. Monoxidil may work for awhile but according to Drug Facts from the FDA: “Hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks of continuous treatment in large clinical trials with minoxidil topical solution 5% for men.” On the other hand, if you are open to the possibility that supplements may have a beneficial effect then you may want to take a look at Procerin.
Subj: Difficult to keep erection
Date: 1/28/2009
My husband is taking Propecial for about 2 years. I have seen a major improvement with his hair, he had a full head of hari now. But here is the problem he seems difficult to keep an erection and to stay in the mood. And I can tell that my married is not very healthy now. My question is if he keeps taking this longer is it going to get better or should he stop now? Thank you!
Kathy
AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer all side effects disappear, both for those who continue and those who stop taking it, but they don’t say how long it takes to get back to normal. There have been a few reports of erectile dysfunction that persists a year and a half after the drug was discontinued. We suggest you read the feedback and make your decision based on that.
Subj: How long to get normal?
Date: 1/28/2009
I took propecia 3 weeks and quit since I have erection problem. Six weeks passed since I quit propecia, but still I have same erection problem. Please send me any data you received for how long need to get normal. Thanks,
WJ
AskDocWeb: There seems to be a lack of data as to how that takes. If readers find a good reference for this, please share it.
Subj: Returned to normal
Date: 2/1/2009
I have used propecia since it first came out on the market in 97. My hair looked great and the hair loss was a thing of the past. I did begin to experience sexual side effects such as not being able to maintain an erection and watery semen. I was with 4 different women during the last 7 years and was not able to get them pregnant. I found out I had very low volume of sperm and the mobility was not up to par. I quit propecia in 2007 and now my sperm count is back to normal. My sex drive and erections returned to normal after about 1 year. I truly believe propecia effects much more people than merk claims. this drug does work but the side effects are extreme. I would not recommend this dangerous drug to any one.

AskDocWeb: We have heard that Nopecia is the Egyptian version of Propecia but have not yet verified that. If it is then you can read about the side effects here.
Subj: Finasteride with minoxidil?
Date: 2/6/2009
Am 25 years old, am loseing hair since I was 20 and more then half of the hair has been gone in my crown area and its getting thiner and thiner. Am palning to start finasteride. I had been going gym from 5 years I don’t take any suppliment I eat regular protein rich food like fish, meet, egg everyday. I also have very mild acne on my face and back. Is it ok for me to start finasteride with minoxidil? Will it effect my muscle growth and strength?
Sujan
AskDocWeb: We have two problems with that; 1. How do you know which product is most effective for you? And 2. If you have negative side effects, how do you know which one caused the side effects? A few men have reported a decrease in both muscle growth and strength but the manufacturer lists neither as a side effect.
Subj: Wonder if it contributed to miscarriage
Date: 2/8/2009
I am very concerned about Propecia and male fertility. My husband and I conceived our first child on the first try. Shortly after that my husband got on Propecia. 3 years later we started trying for another and had no luck for 5 years!! I happened to get pregnat in November of 08. My husband told me it was during the 3 weeks he happened to be off Propecia for the first time throughout all those years. Sadly, I lost the pregnancy on January 4th. After researching on line and finding many complaints like mine, I feel pretty sure Propecia has been the problem. And I almost wonder if it contributed to the miscarriage due to malformed sperm. We desperately want to try again and feel our chances of conceiving will be much higher if my husband goes off Propecia for good. Is there an alternative topical solution you could suggest???
Wendy
AskDocWeb: If the results of Minoxidil lasted more than 48 weeks we would recommend that but until something better come out try Nisim Biofactors.
Subj: Health problems
Date: 2/12/2009
I have been taking propecia for 4 years and although I feel it has helped with my hair loss I am now feeling it maybe causing some of my health problems: stress/boils/lose of sex drive/stomach pains and now I have discomfort below my left breast. Diabities does run in my family and everytime I have visited my Dr and had a physical everything seems fine. I occansianlly have small amounts of blood in my stool, not sure if this means anything but I thought I would share, currently the only other thing I take is a one a day vitamin. k I’m worried and unsure that if I stop taking propecia and still have problems I will just go backwards as far as hairloss goes. Please let me know your thoughts, thanks.
Debating
AskDocWeb: The manufacturer does say that if Propecia is discontinued then the benefits are lost. That means you would go backwards and your hair loss would continue. As with any medication, the benefits are supposed to outweigh the side effects but sometimes that doesn’t happen. When you add that to the fact that it is possible to have unrelated health problems at the same time, the decision to quit or continue can get complicated. Whatever you decide please let us know how this works out for you.
Subj: My doctor failed to mention this
Date: 2/14/2009
I started taking Propecia (dose was 1mg/day) when I was 23 years old. It prevented the balding from spreading further but weeks after I took it I experienced lack of psychological and physical (erectile dysfunctions) sex drive. I used it for two years and stopped using it six months ago because I met a woman. The second reason is that I’m a competitive sportsman and finasteride is considered a doping product because it can be used to mask steroid abuse. I’m disappointed that my doctor also failed to mention this since I could have been banned from international competition. I’m 26 now and although my sex drive has improved it’s still nowhere on the same level as 2,5 years ago. I looked it up and found that it’s natural for testosterone levels to decrease with age but in my case it’s far worse than the natural 10% decrease for males in their thirties. Today, my doctor toke a blood sample and I expect the results next week. This might give some insight if my problem is not partially psychological as well. I will post the results. I’ve read in the comments that the long term effects of finasteride are still unknown but if someone were to make a hypothese – Is there a valid, logical argument whether my testosterone balance will gradually restore over the next months or years or am I really screwed? My second question is: Will products like viagra improve my sexual condition?
Anonymous
AskDocWeb: Products like Viagra may provide some temporary improvement but you need to check with your doctor to make sure it is safe for you. The logical argument for a return of your testosterone balance comes from other men with similar conditions. Most of those men reported returning to normal within a year after discontinuing Propecia. That is not a guarantee that will happen for you but it does mean your chances of returning to normal are good, which is encouraging. Read more feedback.
