Subj: 16 year old
Date: 7/13/2009
I am 16+ year old living in Singapore. I too have male pattern hair loss due to DHT deposits in my hair follicles. After consulting the Senior Dermatologist in Singapore Skin Centre, I have been advised to take propecia 1mg daily. Although my hair falling has been reduced, I have not really seen any major hair growth. I have been taking it for 3 months and the same Dermatologist asked me to continue for 6 more months after recent consultation. I would like to ask whether it is safe for me to take this drug at this age and if not is there any better alternative to this. I would appreciate if you could give your expert opinion on the subject. Regards

Anand

AskDocWeb: In the USA Propecia is not to be used or given to anyone under the age of 18. The results of using Propecia by those under the age of 18 are unknown.

Subj: Medicine to prevent side effects?
Date: 7/14/2009
I was taking propecia for a year, and it worked fine, but the side effects were too much to live with, in my case it was decreased sexual drive, is any other medicine to keep this from happening, other than viagra of course. Thanks for your time.

Alex

AskDocWeb: Most medications are orientated towards coping with the side effect once they occur, such as viagra, but we have yet to find any medicine that would prevent the side effects.

Subj: Will Propecia harm unborn baby?
Date: 7/20/2009
Hi my husband had been taking propecia for 1 year and stopped taking March 2009 so we could try for a baby, I am now pregnant and he now wants to start to taking again as this did help to thicken losing hair, could you please tell me if this will harm unborn baby if we have unprotected sex. I am aware of side affects if I touch propecia. Many thanks.

Louise

AskDocWeb: From data supplied by the manufacturer: “No developmental abnormalities have been observed in offspring resulting from mating finasteride-treated male rats (at 488 times the human exposure) with untreated females.” “Tests were performed for semen levels in 35 men taking Propecia daily for 6 months. Propecia levels were undetectable in 60% of the samples. The highest level measured was 1.52 ng/mL and the mean was 0.26 ng/mL. Using the highest semen level measured, a woman’s exposure through vaginal absorption would be 750 times lower than the exposure from the no-effect dose in Rhesus monkeys tests.” Out interpretation of those statements is that while the risk is NOT zero it is highly unlikely.

Subj: Propecia is not useful

Subj: Weight gain?

AskDocWeb: Although there are a few reports of weight gain it is not listed as a side effect of Propecia. The same is true about weight loss.

Subj: I got confused
Date: 7/22/2009
One day I was giving my husband his propecia pill while taking one of my vitamins and I got confused and end up taking his propecia. I tryed to throw up but couldn’t. Is this something I should be worried about? Its been 1 year after that, and we are planing to have babies.

Sandra

AskDocWeb: That single Propecia pill you took is long gone from your system by now so there shouldn’t be any problem from that. You may want to the reconsider handling of your husband’s pills while you are pregnant. The pills are coated to prevent the finasteride from being absorbed through your skin but it is safer not to take any chances.

Subj: No good results
Date: 7/24/2009
Hi, I have been dealing with hair loss for about 2 years. I’m 32 years old and started propecia 9 months ago. I’ve had no good results at all. Should I give the medication the recommended 12 to 18 months? The weird thing is I get some regrowth but it then disappears again! I have no family history of hair loss at all. Any advice would be appreciated.

Jeff

AskDocWeb: Remember, Propecia does not work for everyone. We would have given up on it after 6 months. If you haven’t had one, consider getting a complete medical physical to rule out vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems, and other health issues that may be causing your hair loss.

Subj: Unexplained muscle pain
Date: 7/28/2009
I have great results with Propecia – over the last 8 years I have pretty much stopped my hair loss. Problem is: it seems I have unexplained muscle pain whether working out or not. How long should I stop Propecia to see if there is a relationship between the drug & the pain?

Jonathon

AskDocWeb: There was one other report of unexplained muscle pain while taking Propecia. In that case the pain went away upon discontinuing and returned within 4 weeks when they started using it again. They did not say how long they were off the drug before their muscle pain subsided.

Subj: About Us
Date: 8/3/2009
Hello, I just stumbled on your website while looking for more information about the side effects of Propecia (particularly depression). I am very impressed with the objectivity and helpful opinions expressed here. Would you mind giving a little more information about AskDocWeb, such as who writes the articles and reviews the feedback from readers? You don’t seem to have an “About Us” section. Thanks,

Scott

AskDocWeb: The articles and reviews are a group effort. Some articles are outsourced to university students and various medical personnel to help both with their expenses and provide us with new material. We currently have enough writers but if there is a drug or supplement that you would like to see covered just let us know.

Subj: Low libido and low volume
Date: 8/3/2009
Hi all, I’m 38 and have been progressively losing hair on the top and the crown for some 8 years now. In fact I had a severe bout of loss for about a month when I was about 21. But it was not noticeable by others. I used rogaine both on the crown and the top for about a year and a half with fair diligency, but the progressive hair loss continued. So I stopped applying rogain on the top of my head. After 6 months or so, and for the past year or so, I have been losing considerable amount of hair. Its been not good to say the least. So I took finasteride (generic) for about 6 weeks. Cut the pill int four (1.25 mg each). But, it’s a small pill, so the quarters are rarely the same size. It did feel like the loss was starting to stem and for a couple of weeks, when I was out and about, I didnt feel so conscious of my thinned top. Did not see any side effects for about 2-3 weeks and then bam! Low libido and low volume, longer time to get erect, you name it. I stopped the pill after 6 weeks, and its been about 2 weeks now and I think I detected my first morning erection today after what seems like a long time. The side effects are seeming to go away over the past week or so.. Now, my hair loss is the same, and I’m in a quandry if to go back on the pill again or not!

Subj: Hair loss may be worse
Date: 8/4/2009
I’m just coming to my 5th month of propecia. Hairloss seems to be the same if not worse than it use to be. Is there any hope for me?

Danny

AskDocWeb: It is a sad fact but Propecia doesn’t work for everyone. There is still hope though, according to the manufacturer it may take up to a year to see results.

Subj: Long term damage from Propecia
Date: 8/5/2009
Dear Owner, I am a representative of a support group which helps the thousands of men whom have been permanently damaged by Propecia (finasteride) side effects. Currently, medical professionals not certain of the cause of our debilitating condition, and our community seeks to elucidate the source of our Propecia-induced illness. We have come across a comment regarding these side effects, entitled “Long term damage from Propecia” (askdocweb.com/propecia17.html) in which a victim made startling remarks about the cause of his condition (DHT receptor complications). My question is, do you have the e-mail address of this individual so we can contact him regarding his situation? Any help would be appreciated and help many suffering men. Thank you,

Michael

AskDocWeb: We will pass along your email to that individual so that if they want to contact you they can do that directly.

Subj: No side effects
Date: 8/8/2009
Been taking procepia for 6 years now with no known side effects. I once stop taking it for 2 months and noticed my hair thinning again but when I started up again it thickened up. If anything my sex drive is better and my skin is clearer. It’s a shame it does not have the same effect on all men.

Subj: Anger management issues and irritability
Date: 8/11/2009
My son is 20 years old and has been prescribed Propecia for the last 2 years as he’s loosing his hair early. He is not eligible for transplant surgery until he’s at least 24 yrs of age according to our doctor, a leading national adolescent hair loss specialist and dermatologist at the University of Illinois. My son has expressed severe anger management issues and irritability that he’s been having trouble curtailing. Is there any link to this type of side effect?

Stephanie

AskDocWeb: Anger management issues and irritability have not been clinically attributed to Propecia but several people have reported problems with both while taking Propecia.

Subj: No results

Hi, I’ve been thinning and losing hair for about 2.5 years. Started in crown and just expanded throughout entire scalp. I only have hair on the sides that’s it! I started rogaine when I first noticed for a year and no results. Started propecia 9 months ago nothing yet. Have you ever heard of someone losing all their hair in 2.5 years? Any advice would be appreciated.

Jeff

AskDocWeb: Losing hair that fast raises the possibility of other health issues such as a thyroid problem. If you get a complete physical let us know what you find out. Read more feedback.
