Subj: Twenty years old and can’t hold an erection
Date: 8/11/2009
Hello I am twenty years old and I have been losing my hair since I was seventeen. I have been on Propecia for eight months and my hair has been rapidly becoming thinner. I have not seen any results to the contrary and I continue to be shedding hair with no results: not just in one spot either, but the entire top of my head. The side effects have also not done me any small justice. I can’t hold an erection, my semen is watery, and I am breaking out in acne all over my face. What are my options at this point?

Alex

AskDocWeb: Beyond the obvious one of discontinuing the drug, there are few other options available. Propecia is the strongest product on the market so everything else is likely to have less effect. Aside from drugs there are hair transplants, toupees, wigs or just learning to accept the situation. It may be worthwhile to explore the possibility that something in your environment or a medical condition might be causing the hair loss. For example you would probably kick yourself if you found out that your shampoo was causing your hair loss. Look up the ingredients in it and find out.

Subj: HORRIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
Date: 8/11/2009
My boyfriend tried propecia for only one or two months and almost immediately noticed extreme depression, and loss of sex drive, so he stopped taking the pills, its been at least 6 months since he stopped taking them and his symptoms of depression and loss of his sex drive not only continued but have gotten worse. He has completely changed to the point that he just isn’t himself at all anymore. He is not only depressed now but angry and suicidal and feels like he is losing his mind. The symptoms are extremely severe and actually have ended our relationship which is why I looked this up. We were together a very long time and rarely ever fought, we were perfect together, after he tried this drug he started pushing me away more and more, until he finally left.
I’ve been so confused about it b/c there was no reason for this to happen and I remembered that it all started after he tried propecia and decided to look it up just now. Now I am horrified to see this could actually be from the propecia, even when he only tried it maybe 1 or 2 months, but I’ve read other cases on here saying very similar things. Could this really be the propecia? If so Is there anything the people that are suffering from these horrible side effects that are seriously destroying peoples lives, is there anything they can do to reverse these side effects, has anyone considered a law suit even. Please let me know b/c especially now I am convinced that this is the cause of my now ex-boyfriends very serious situation. I am really worried now, he has even thought about suicide b/c of this, IS THERE ANY WAY TO REVERSE THESE HORRIBLE SIDE EFFECTS??? what are these men supposed to do? Someone please help.

Subj: Propecia price
Date: 8/16/2009
Has Propecia gone up in price lately? It now costs me $70/mth! What are other people paying? How can I find a cheaper alternative? Thanks.

Chris

AskDocWeb: There are pros and cons to pill-splitting but that is one possibility to consider. It would be interesting to know if people in different parts of the country are paying different prices – anyone?

Subj: Birth defects?
Date: 8/26/2009
I have been taking Proscar for past 2 years (cutting pill into quarters per day) for the sole purpose of treating hair loss – have to say that it literally has re-grown my hair. HOWEVER, I have become paranoid about the fact that I have unprotected sex with my girlfriend (not trying to get pregnant), but would / could this have any form on an impact on having a child or birth defects later on, if we then decide to try after I then stop taking the drug? Should we be concerned? Important to note that I do not allow for the crushed pill to come into contact with her in any way.

Michael

AskDocWeb: Information supplied by the manufacturer implies that the amount transferred during intercourse is so low as to not cause any problems. Over the pas six years that we have been collecting comments about Propecia there was only one report of a birth defect.

Subj: Quit cold turkey?
Date: 9/1/2009
I have been taking propecia for about 5 years. I am not experiencing sexual side effects including teste pain, watery semen, and decreased libido. Should I ween myself off or quit cold turkey?

Greg

AskDocWeb: Since there are no withdrawal effects you can just stop if you want to do that.

Subj: Tolerance?
Date: 9/4/2009
I took Propecia for a year and a half, then I stopped taking it for about 6 months. Now if I resume taking it, will it still be effective. Have I built a tolerance to it? I’m worried that it will not be helpful any longer. Thank you.

Johnny

AskDocWeb: If it was working for you before then it is likely to work for you again.

Subj: Reduce the chances of side effects?
Date: 9/6/2009
I have propecia and was really looking forward to taking it but after reading all the potential side effects I do not know if I wanna take the risk. My question is would taking the pill maybe two or three times a week reduce the chances of side effects while reducing hair loss somewhat?

Adam

AskDocWeb: That would reduce the chances of side effects but unfortunately there isn’t any data available on what might be a minimum effective dosage.

Subj: Massive pain in testicles
Date: 9/7/2009
I was on propecia 1mg per day for a week on the seventh day u had experienced massive pain in my testicles, my left T pulled itself up like a torsion position but wasn’t a torsion on top at the same time had mass body pains non stop hands legs feet knees this happen all the same time. The pain my T is on and off. Not to mention lost my libido and seems like ED also, how long will it take for these to go away? Or is there anything can do to correct or help the problem? Please advice.

Joey

AskDocWeb: Sorry to hear about your painful experience Joey. Of course you should contact your doctor as soon as possible. The length of time it takes for this adverse effect to go away varies from one individual to the next. It would be helpful if the manufacturer would publish enough data to make a guess.

Subj: How long will it take?
Date: 9/9/2009
Hi, I am 18 years old and have been taking propecia for the last 7 months but stopped a couple of months ago. I do get erections but they are not hard and not instant like before. Its been 2 months now, would the side effects disappear? How long will it take?

Ben

AskDocWeb: Men who quit taking Propecia because of sexual side effects report that it took from several weeks to several months for their side effects go away. A small number still have problems a year later.

Subj: Counteract side effects?
Date: 9/10/2009
I am considering taking propecia. I am worried about the potential side effects. Can things like Exercise and diet or herbal supplement help counteract the effects of propecia? Thanks,

Jimmy

AskDocWeb: The only thing that we know of that counteracts some of the sexual side effect of Propecia are drugs like Viagra and Cialis.

Subj: Is it forever?
Date: 9/11/2009
Would u tell me for how long do I need to take Propecia? Is it for ever or only for limited time? In France or those area Propecia user taking them for only 3 years. Please let me know, Thanks,

Alex

AskDocWeb: As with all the hair loss products currently on the market, it stops working if you stop using it. Why would any drug company want to cure something when they can make a lot more money treating it?

Subj: Propecia complaint
Date: 9/12/2009
I had heard to take propecia for minor hair loss, I had a really great head of hair just a little thinning in the crowns and the back, but just still very minute at the rate I was going it would probably take about 10-15 years before I was even looking remotely bald, but after taking PROPECIA for 3month I realized that this stuff is poison. My Doctor even said it before I got some, he was trying to warn me, but I was to stubborn! I was shedding like crazy, bad deppression, anxiety, and sexual side effects. I haven’t taken for about 9 months now and I have lost so much hair were I was never even having a problem ever! I’m still shedding alot of hair each day still! I’m tired of these doctors who make money off selling propecia, because we have to go visit them for the check ups and prescriptions fills. Telling us it’s just in our heads or it’s a minor problem, stop lying tell the truth!!! Too many pages on the internet of thousands if not millions of people with same side effects for it to be mere coincidence. MERC, FDA, DOCTORS its about time that you told the truth and take the giant lawsuit and possibly criminal charges that are going to happen. All you got to do is just a little research on Google and you will see just how many sufferers there are out there with permanent side effects. Go to you tube and there are a couple vids on there too about this poisen! Now your gonna here from a doctor blowing smoke about my nightmare come to life. Or some Merc rep posing as a client saying “I never had a problem”, blah, blah – you might not… but a larger percent than Merc is letting on is having a problem. Luckily not all my side effects are permanent but many out there are screwed for life. I will say a prayer for those people.

Date: 9/13/2009
I’m on Propecia for two years and it caused eyebrow and pubic hair shedding. I explored the internet and found many have the same problem.

Subj: Weight gain?
Date: 9/14/2009
I want to know if there would be weight gain? How does one know that he has been a victim of side effect? Is there a way to check, for example, for weight gain, could be due to life style abuses, such as no exercise and consumption of red meat in large quantities and sugar in various forms.

Arvind

AskDocWeb: Weight gain is not listed as a side effect of Propecia. Any sudden change in weight may be attributed to a drug that you recently started taking but pinning down the cause for sure is difficult. There is an increased chance that the drug was the cause of the weight change if your weight has been stable for some time, your activity level fairly constant, and your eating habits haven’t changed. Of course if you have recently stopped exercise and started eating a poor diet then that could also be the cause. Read more feedback.
