Subj: Alternative to Propecia
Date: 9/15/2004
I’ve been using Propecia for over 4 years now and have experienced the same sexual side effects too (mainly libido loss). Lately (less than a year now) I’ve experienced severe head aches, head pressure and dizziness and find that once I stop taking Propecia that these symptoms disappear within a few days so even though Propecia has worked for me I am not happy with these side effects…can you suggest an alternative?
Rui
AskDocWeb: We can suggest other things to try but right now we don’t have any good alternatives. Procerin is something we are taking a close look at (see ourProcerin Study). Procerin is suppose to work by blocking DHT (like Propecia does) so there is the possibility of headaches with it also. A shampoo for hair loss may help. There is even a vitamin complex just for hair loss. We are still collecting information, products and feedback about hair loss. Let us know if you find something that works for you.
Subj: Other alternatives to Propecia
Date: 9/15/2004
Hello, I have been taking Propecia for about a year now. I love the results as I have not been losing anymore hair. Here is the problem. I find it difficult for me to keep and erection and to stay in the mood. Are there any new drugs out there besides Rogaine that will help me and do not have the side effects that I am experiencing? Please email me the answer. Thank you for your time,
Shawn
AskDocWeb: Sorry Shawn, we don’t usually give personal email answers. We just don’t have the time. As for new drugs to help fight hair loss, we are still looking.
Subj: Happy I stuck with it
Date: 9/16/2004
Propecia does not suck but is also does not kick butt. I am 25 and had a full head of hair (mostly still do) but it all started falling 8 months ago. I started on Propecia right away and my hair loss has significantly decreased (but not stopped) – and unfortunately it is not helping with my frontal area (my main concern now). I had major sexual problems on my 2nd and 3rd month of Propecia. I came VERY close to giving it up – but it all resolved on the 3rd month. I am very happy I stuck with it and am back to my (very good) normal young men sex drive I missed so much during that period. I have pictures if wanted 🙂

Subj: Long term use of propecia
Date: 9/21/2004
Is there any fixed period of taking finpecia 1mg. Does prolonged use create any issues?
Chris
AskDocWeb: There is no fixed time limit on how long you can take Propecia. We recommend you read all of the feedback from Propecia users here. Some side effects don’t show up for a year or more. We would appreciate it if you would come back and share your experience with others.
Subj: It’s great
Date: 9/24/2004
I started to use it for 2 months and I think its great I don’t have any sexual side affects and my spots are going, it is amazing. I am recently single and the confidence is great I am 29. I don’t want to lose what I have. As for that 1.8%, I think it’s in your head and not the propecia, just use some creativity!

Subj: Birth defects from Propecia in semen?
Date: 9/26/2004
Sexual intercourse – Women of childbearing age, or women who are pregnant, should not be exposed to the semen of a male partner who uses Propecia. This medication can cause genital deformities in male infants.
This is not something that I have read any were but this web site, I have just started taking the drug and my wife and I are going to be starting a family in the next year or 2, it does not seem to be a good idea to continue to take the drug while my wife is trying to get pregnant.
Clayton
AskDocWeb: It seems you have mixed up two items from our report to form something new. We did not say that women who are pregnant should not be exposed to the semen of a male partner who uses Propecia. What we did say is that women who are pregnant should not be exposed to the contents of the pill. Propecia is not to be taken by women who are trying to conceive or who are pregnant. If taken by women who are pregnant, it can cause birth defects. Women should not handle crushed or broken Propecia tablets because it can be absorbed through the skin. The whole tablets are coated to prevent this.
The other item you seem to have confused with this is a women’s exposure to the semen of a male partner who uses Propecia. According to Merck Pharmaceuticals, tests were performed for semen levels in 35 men taking Propecia daily for 6 months. Propecia levels were undetectable in 60% of the samples. The highest level measured was 1.52 ng/mL. Using this semen level, a woman’s exposure through vaginal absorption would be 750 times lower than the exposure from the no-effect dose in Rhesus monkeys tests. We interpret this to mean that while the chance of a birth defect from Propecia in semen is not zero, it is highly unlikely.
On the other hand, we agree with your conclusion but for other reasons. The possibility of reduced libido, reduced sperm count and erection problems would seem to be worth avoiding if you are trying to father a child.
Subj: Androgel and propecia
Date: 9/26/2004
I am a 60 year old male that has been taking Rogaine for 10 years with good results. I have been using Androgel for 2 years due to low testosterone. Unfortunately, this has resulted in greater hair loss. Will propecia help? Or will it negate the Androgel effect?
Bruce
AskDocWeb: As it turns out, using Propecia with Androgel would seem to be a good idea. Propecia doesn’t prevent or neutralize the testosterone. It prevents the conversion of testosterone into DHT. It’s the DHT that causes hair loss so there is a good chance that Propecia will help.
Subj: Weaning off minoxidil
Date: 9/30/2004
I’ve been using topical minoxidil for about 6 years now and want to start using Propecia due to progressive thinning. I’m aware that once you stop using minoxidil the positive effects will cease. What is the best way to “wean” myself off of the minoxidil once I begin the Propecia?
Mitch
AskDocWeb: As far as I know, there is no reason to “wean” yourself off the Minoxidil. You can just stop using it. You may want to read the other posts here as many men are getting good results when they use the two together.
Subj: Still have side effects
Date: 10/1/2004
I had propecia for 5 months in a year 2000, but until now I still have side effects, no hard erection as b4, no Libido, low sperm volume, not homogenous sperm liquid….every where I go: (The medicine should go out of the body after stopping it, so no side effects any more).
In my opinion, I feel something not right, Propecia has made damage inside my body and it still there until now…So I am just looking for some urologist who knows and had experience about Propecia.
Mr J.
Subj: Finpecia
Date: 10/4/2004
I’ve been using Propecia for 2 years now and the hair stopped falling out and some grew back BUT 4 months ago I decided to use Finpecia, made by Cipla which is much cheaper, problem is my hair has began to shed and has fallen out very quickly so will going back to propecia put me back to how I was 4 months ago?
Lee
AskDocWeb: We have no way of knowing how you personally, will respond to the Propecia. If it does restore you to how you were before, it will likely take several months.
Subj: Concerned about birth defects
Date: 10/5/2004
I just started to take propecia AFTER my wife got pregnant. I am aware of the possible amount in Semen so I take care of it. I wonder if there’s any amount of Finasteride in man’s saliva and in body sweat which can be absorbed by a pregnant woman’s body whenever touched?
Adel
AskDocWeb: We were also concerned about that possibility and looked for any accounts of it happening. We found none.
Subj: Nose bleeds
Date: 10/5/2004
I’ve been taking the propecia for about 10 days. I’ve noticed no sexual side affects so far but just within the last few days I’ve noticed a slight swelling and soreness in back my tongue on one side and last night someone lightly pinched my nose and it bled. This morning it will still smear easily. I’ve never had a problem with nosebleeds. Is it possible this too is part of the side affects?
Tommy
AskDocWeb: Yes, it is possible. Please review the symptoms of an allergic reaction as this may be related.
Subj: Hair loss at 19
Date: 10/17/2004
I am 19 years old and I have been on Propecia for almost 4 months now. I started propecia because my father went bald at 19 and I wanted to make sure that I wouldn’t. Even though I had thick hair and no noticeable signs of baldness, I wanted to be safe. Well ever since I started propecia my hair has gotten progressively worse, and now my hair is thin and fuzzy, nothing like it used to be. I want to know if the propecia caused this to happen, and also if I stop the propecia if my hair will grow back, or if it will just get even worse. Please help me,
Dane
AskDocWeb: You say your father went bald at 19 and you are now the same age as when he lost his hair. We know that heredity plays a strong role in hair loss. In your case, it would seem more likely that heredity has a stronger influence than the Propecia. The drug is more likely to have slowed down what would have happened anyway.
Subj: Propecia and liver disease
Date: 10/20/2004
Hi,I took propecia for 3 years and everything was fine. I stopped using it because I heard it could cause lever problems over the years. Is it true?
Eric
AskDocWeb: We haven’t heard of Propecia “causing” liver problems. Just that if you already have or have had liver disease, you may need a lower dose or special monitoring during therapy.
Subj: Sexual side effects of Propecia
Date: 10/21/2004
I’m 40 years old and been taking propecia for the past three years. I’m very satisfied with the results. It has improved my hairline and actually grew a lot of hair. My friends noticed this and they were very impressed. Unfortunately I noticed that my libido has decreased and my erections were not that hard compared before. My ejaculation volume decreased as well. Is there a medicine or natural vitamins that I can take to counteract these side effects without degrading the purpose of propecia? I read in the web that if I stop taking propecia, this side effects will eventually disappear. Is this true? how long will it take to reverse the side effects. Thank you and hoping to here from you soon.
Gerry
AskDocWeb: The two main drugs that help with erections are Viagra and Cialis. A volume enhancer may help increase the amount of fluid released in ejaculation. The manufacturer does not say how long it takes for the sexual side effects of Propecia to disappear and we are still waiting to hear first hand reports from x-users. Read more feedback.
