Subj: Thinning again
Date: 7/5/2010
Hi, I’d been using 5% minoxidil twice a day for 9 months with good results, and after the 9 months I decided to stop using it for 2-3 months as I’d ran out. After 2-3 months I’d noticed my hair had started thinning again on top, so I’ve decided to start using it again. Will I have to go through the shredding phase again, or will it cancel it out having already used it twice daily in the first 9 months? I also take finasteride as well, and continued taking it during the time I’d stopped using the minoxidil.
James
AskDocWeb: Taking finasteride helps reduce the possibility of going through another shedding phase but there is no way to know if you will or not.
Subj: Urine drug test?
Date: 7/6/2010
Although I stopped using it couple of months ago, is there any chance finpecia (finasteride used for hair growth) give false positive in a urine drug test?
Nanda
AskDocWeb: Propecia has not been reported to cause any false positives on urine drug tests.
Subj: Sexual side effects
Date: 7/7/2010
I have been consistently taking propecia for 3 months and starting noticing sexual side effects one day away from completing my first 3 months of consumption of the drug. Obviously, that was the same day that I stopped taking drugs. It’s been four days since I have stopped taking the drug and I want to know if the “no erection” (erectile dysfunction) sexual side effect of propecia will go away, and how long does it take for propecia to get out of my body? Thanks in advance for your help.
Billy
AskDocWeb: The mean terminal half-life of Propecia is about 5-6 hours in men 18-60 and 8 hours in men over 70 years of age. As a general rule, a drug has no clinically significant effect after a period of time equal to 5 times its hair-life. In most cases the side effects go away within a few months after discontinuing the drug.
Subj: Losing more hair
Date: 7/12/2010
Hi, I am a young male in mid 20s. I still have full hair but started feeling that I may become bald looking at my family… To prevent early baldness, I have started using a generic name called prohair (same constituencies as propecia with 1 mg finasteride) one month ago… I don’t know if this is common, but for the past few days I noticed that I am losing more hair then I ever did before. Is this ok with propecia to have at the beginning more hair loss as part of the process? Please reply and thank you very much for your advice,
JK
AskDocWeb: We don’t give advice but can tell you about the side effects. Losing more hair soon after beginning treatment has been reported with all the products for hair loss. How long this lasts varies from a week to several weeks. For some people this shedding is so severe that they stop treatment.
Subj: Shedding has not subsided
Date: 7/13/2010
been taking generic Propecia (Finasteride 1mg) for about 2-3 months.. when will I notice inprovement as the shedding has not subsided. also, if chest enlargement does occur.. will excercise and healthy eating help reduce this side effect? thank you
Jerry
AskDocWeb: Most men notice an improvement the 6th month. If chest enlargement does occur, exercise and healthy eating are not likely to help so contact your doctor.
Subj: Miscarriages?
Date: 7/14/2010
My son is on Propecia for about two years. His wife was diagnosed with a chrom problem, I was wondering could Propecia cause miscarriages.
Patricia
AskDocWeb: Although Propecia and Proscar can be VERY dangerous even in minute amounts if accidentally ingested during pregnancy, the concern is about a specific kind of birth defect. There is no evidence that they might cause miscarriages.
Subj: I started peeing blood
Date: 7/17/2010
I am 50 years old now I started taking propecia at 44 years old for hair loss and noticed my hair regrowing and staying full even though my father was very balding, after 2.5 years I switched over to the grenic because of cost. 1 year ago I started peeing blood. I went to doctors and they checked my kidneys for stones, checked my prostrate for cancer, and told me it was normal and not to worry about it saying some men just pee blood, and all doctors telling me how great the propecia was for my prostrate. I ran out of my pills and decided to wait awhile to see if it would affect my hair loss and after 8 weeks no loss of hair, no more peeing blood, but a huge loss in erection strength. My recomendation to anyone is not to take this drug, if you are losing your hair so be it, but to know you could end up peeing blood daily and lose the hardness you have is not worth the risk. Now I am just praying you are reading this message early enough.

Subj: Penis shrunk
Date: 7/19/2010
Although I didn’t measure it, my penis has definitely shrunk-I would guestimate maybe 1/2 to 1 inch also as someone else posted. I took propecia for a period of approx 5-7 years. It grows hair and works great for that but after I discussed it with the doctor I stopped taking propecia BECAUSE it caused my penis to shrink. Unless your penis is unusually long I would NOT recommend this drug for this reason. Do you want hair but a short penis or balding? Also, my wife divorced me…could this be part of the reason??? If you want to take propecia and save money here’s what I did….buy 90 day supply of PROSCAR instead and cut them up to last a year. The insurance paid for all but the copay of $100 or so that was the cost for a year! They may have caught on to this but I got away with it for years. The doctor wrote the prescription as 90 day supply PROSCAR with 3 refills (so that would last like 4 years!) I wish it wasnt so cheap for me because I would have stopped taking it earlier.

Subj: Strange growth patterns
Date: 7/21/2010
I have been using Propecia for about 10 years and I feel that it has been effective. After the first few years, however, I noticed some strange growth patterns (thin spots, patches and lines). Have any of these been reported as side effects?
Larry
AskDocWeb: Not so far but maybe your post will encourage other men to speak up.
Subj: Pain in penis after ejaculation
Date: 7/28/2010
After 9 months of consumption of Propecia I started feeling pain in my penis after ejaculation. I have consulted an UROLOGIST, COLON & RECTAL SURGEON and a NEUROLOGIST but no one was able what is causing the pain. It became a mystery. I am not sure whether it is due to the in-take of Propecia. I have stopped taking Propecia after one more month (total consumption is 10 months) but still I my penis is facing after ejaculation. Is it due to the in-take of Propecia?

AskDocWeb: Other men taking Propecia have reported similar experiences. One man reported that the pain in his penis lasted for 6 months after discontinuing Propecia.
Subj: Propecia with Rogaine?
Date: 8/2/2010
I just stared taking Propecia about a week ago. I used Procerin for 6 months but didnt notice any results. Im 26, still have a good head of hair but noticed slight thinning on crown and temple regions, also a slight recession in the hairline so I thought I would do something about while still in the early stages of hair loss. I was wondering if its safe to use Propecia and the Rogaine topical solution together? I apply the rogaine to my crown twice a day and also take a Propecia tab once daily.

AskDocWeb: A lot of guys have been combining these two products for years and so far there are no reports of any problems.
Subj: Propecia success story
Date: 8/3/2010
I have been losing my hair for a few years now and like many men, was devistated to when I found out. My doc told me that MPB usually comes from my grandfather on my mothers side of the family. I had only seen a few pictures of him and never noticed that he was bald. A few years ago, I began to notice that there was hair all over my pillow and after combing my hair, there would be hair on it. Sure enough, my dermatologist said that I did have MPB. I went home, looked at a couple photos of my grandfather and noticed something I didnt notice before, he had a comb-over. I decided that I would do everything I could to avoid that. I did some research and found out something that I wish I would have discovered years ago, Propecia is very effective in stopping MPB. I still have a decent head of hair but I have lost a signifigant amount and it is somewhat noticeable. I decided to start using Propecia. I figured it was well worth trying it. It is about $80 for a month supply but I will definantly pay $80 a month to keep my hair.
I am amazed when I hear people who are losing their hair say that they dont want to use it because they would have to use it the rest of their lives. I have to do many things the rest of my life, like brushing my teeth, combing my hair, shaving, and several other forms of grooming so whats taking 10 seconds to open a pill bottle and swallowing a pill that has giving me no harmful side effects. Anyways, I noticed after 4 or 5 months, that less and less hair was on my pillow and my doc was very pleased to find that no hair was on his hands when would evaluate me. Afer about 7 months, my hair loss completley STOPPED. Besides getting back what I lost, what more could I ask for.
I recently decided to add Rogaine to my regimine. Its an extra $20 a month but if it helps even a little and helps me even regrow a little, its worth it. So I pay about $1,200 a year for everything, thats nothing compared to what people pay for their habit s and other uneccessary things like smoking, drinking, or their outragious cell phone bills. All of those things combined add up for an expensive lifestyle. So I recommend to anyone who is losing there hair, to try it. It has a good chance of working. Good luck!
Brian
