Subj: Post-propecia syndrome
Date: 12/26/2010
Hey guys, I had the same problem as you guys (post-propecia syndrome) for over a year, and I FINALLY figured out a cure for it… Simply put, stop masturbating. COMPLETELY. Once I stopped masturbating, my libido gradually came back, and I found myself wanting sex again. I can’t explain scientifically how this happened, but I assure you it’s real.
Mike
AskDocWeb: For those suffering from this syndrome, it sounds like something easy enough to try.
Subj: Increased acne
Date: 12/30/2010
Hi I took propecia for about a month and noticed increased in my acne. Is acne a side affect of propecia? Will it go away or will the acne get worse as I continue propecia? By the way can the rise in testosterone from propecia cause more hairloss? Especially in the hairline?
John
AskDocWeb: Acne is not one of the recognized side effects of Propecia but there are several reports of it showing up shortly after the start of using this drug. Just because a side effect was not seen in the clinical trials with Propecia, that does not mean that it cannot cause this problem.
Subj: The trick is not to wait
Date: 1/2/2011
I have been taking the pill for 15 years now. My brother did not take the pill and he is completely bald. I have a full head of hair and I am now 40 years old. I also have very few grey hairs(not sure why). I was loosing my hair in my 20s but starting taking the Propecia as soon as I noticed the hair loss. I got back 90% of the hair loss and it has remained constant. I think the trick is not to wait. As soon as you think you are loosing you hair, get on it. I did not notice any side effects to this point. My doctor is monitoring my prostate and liver.

Subj: Back on Proscar
Date: 1/10/2011
Hi AskDocWeb, I had good progress taking 1mg proscar, I stopped and lost much hair, I am back on it, will I see hair growth again?? Thanks,
Spike
AskDocWeb: Just for the record, it is Propecia that comes in 1mg dosages. Proscar may be the same drug (finasteride) but it comes in 5mg dosages. And yes, you are likely to see hair growth again.
Subj: Freaking out
Date: 1/13/2011
I’ve been taking the 1mg daily for about 6 months and the first “side-effect” was a pronounced belly, my lifestyle has remained EXACTLY the same. My nipples are a bit puffier and I’m getting scared. I never had a high libido so it’s not like much has changed. Erection is ok. But tell you the truth, I want to STOP! But I’m also scared sh*tless to stop and f*ck with my endocrine system! I’m really freaking out and I need to know how to stop! I’m going to schedule an appointment with an endocrinologist TOMORROW, but I need any input I can get.

Subj: Impacts for women?
Date: 1/20/2011
What are the possible side effect when this is taken by a women? I have been prescribed this by my dermatologist. It says not to be taken by women, but other than the pregnancy impact, there is no other information. I am not and have no plans to conceive. Since this is intended for men, I’m not sure what the impacts are for women. Please help!
Jane
AskDocWeb: A study involving 137 postmenopausal women showed no benefit in hair growth and no adverse events from using Propecia. On the other hand, a couple of women have written that they are getting good results with it.
Subj: Propecia dosage and side effects
Date: 1/21/2011
I’m 21 year old..using propecia for 5 months..i was facing male pattern baldness in its first stage..i read thousands of articles abt propecia..at the end i decided i would give it a try…first 4-5 days i felt decrese in libido and slight testicular pain..but soon i got away with this problem..and my hair fall stopped..then after a month i suffered heavy hair loss..which eventually stopped in around 1 month..and now there is hardly any hair fall.. since i was afraid of its side-effects so 1day i searched a lot on net abt this drug..and got to know even 0.2 mg dose is precisely 0.8 times efficient in hair loss as 1 mg dose (as per merck study submitted to FDA and japanescholars) (im right now unable to find original document submitted by merck to FDA..u can search it ..its there) and in a clinical study on finasteride 5 mg has shown a significant effect on sperms parameter which tend to decrese with its use.but finasteride 1 mg has a less effect on sperm parameters compare to 5 mg dose. so i decided to take 0.2 mg dose..and still it is working very well.. im citing some journal.. so it would be wrong to say finasteride does not effect sperms parameter but this effect can be decreased by lower dose..if some1 is facing mild Mpb and has a fear it could effect fertility (particularly who r not married like me and dont want to risk potency like me)could opt 0.2 mg dose.. slight calculation using 0.2 mg dose would mean u have taken just 12 pills of proscar 5 mg in a year as im using propecia hoping it would not effect my potency..

Subj: Propecia affect the height?
Date: 1/22/2011
Hello, I am 43 and I have been on Propecia for about 16 years. I saved my hair. We have 4 children. 2 of them are preteen but shorter than their teamates and classmates. Could Propecia affect the height of the children?
Ari
AskDocWeb: We have seen nothing to indicate that Propecia might affect the height of children conceived by a man using it.
Subj: Depression
Date: 1/26/2011
On 12/5/2010 AskDocWeb stated: “Depression isn’t listed as an “official” side effect of propecia” Well, it is now. Merck has officially added it to prescribing info as a possible side effect from Propecia & Proscar use.
John
AskDocWeb: Thanks John, we have verified that and updated the Propecia page as well as several answers.
Subj: Class action lawsuit for persistent sexual dysfunction
Date: 1/26/2011
BREAKING NEWS: January 24, 2011 Klein Lyons has filed a class action lawsuit against Merck Frosst Canada and its affiliated companies on behalf of Canadian men who used Propecia or Proscar and suffered continuing sexual dysfunction.
CANADIANS: SIGN UP TO PARTICIPATE
Press Release:
VANCOUVER, Jan. 24 /CNW/- A class action was filed today in the Supreme Court of British Columbia by Vancouver resident, Michael Miller, against Merck Frosst Canada and its affiliated companies. The lawsuit has been brought on behalf of Canadian men who used Propecia or Proscar and suffered continuing sexual dysfunction. Propecia and Proscar are prescribed as a cosmetic treatment for male pattern hair loss also known as androgenic alopecia. The product monograph discloses that some men may experience sexual dysfunction but states that the symptoms disappear after cessation of the drug.
Mr. Miller, who is in his early 20s, was concerned when his hair started to thin in some areas. He was prescribed Proscar which he hoped would stop his hair from thinning. After about a month of use he noticed a drastic change in his behaviour, “I lost my interest in sex and I felt anxious in social situations for no particular reason,” he says.
While on the drug, his symptoms of sexual dysfunction increased as the months passed. When he could no longer bear the side effects, he stopped using Proscar but these symptoms didn’t go away: “My sexual functioning has not recovered, I have seen specialists and have tried treatments but nothing has worked,” says Mr. Miller.
According to Mr. Miller’s lawyer, David Klein, “The product labels have been changed in several European countries to include a warning of persistent erectile dysfunction after discontinuation of the drug but this change has not been made on the Canadian product labels.”
It is alleged that the drug manufacturers failed to adequately warn Canadians of the true risks. Klein also says, “So far, more than 80 Canadian men have expressed an interest in participating in the class action. We believe there are many other men who will come forward now that the case has been filed in court.” Mr. Miller is represented by Klein Lyons, one of Canada’s most experienced class action law firms.

Jimmy
AskDocWeb: The answer to that is not yet known. Although side effects are more likely to show up in the first weeks of treatment, it is possible for them to develop even after long-term use.

Subj: Rise in testosterone?
Date: 2/1/2011
can the rise in testosterone from propecia cause more hairloss? Especially in the hairline?
Tom
AskDocWeb: We have seen no evidence of that. There have been reports of increased shedding in the first 2 months of taking Propecia but this is thought to reflect an acceleration of the normal growth cycle of hair. That shedding is short term and after the 1-2 months there is typically a significant reduction in shedding. Read more feedback.
