Subj: Experiencing eye floaters

Like Charles, I am also experiencing eye floaters. I have been on propecia for a very long time (decade-ish), but just recently started to notice them within the last year or so.

Subj: Drinking alcohol?
Date: 3/27/2011
My boyfriend started taking propecia 4 days ago, band usually on the weekend we like to go out dance an drink alcohol. Is there any bad side effect if he drinks alcohol while doing this treatment? Please advise and thanks in advance.

Toni

AskDocWeb: There are no cautions about the use of alcohol with propecia. As long as the drinking is not excessive it should not be a problem. Alcohol has not been reported to have any effect on the effectiveness of Propecia.

Subj: Lost my sex drive a bit
Date: 4/7/2011
Started taking generic 1 mg Finasteride in Nov of ’09 after hearing about good results from a friend. I’m nowhere near bald, but I noticed more and more hair falling out in the shower. Read about some of the side effects before taking it. Wasn’t too worried. It helped maintain my hair for the first year. I feel like I may have lost my sex drive a bit now though, and have a harder time maintaining an erection. I’m going to stop to see if I notice a difference in these apparent side effects. If I do, I’m done taking the drug.

Subj: Long standing sadness
Date: 4/7/2011
I’ve been taking Propecia for roughly 12 years. I started taking it when I noticed thinning around the crown and a bit of a receding hairline. My younger brother was already bald. I don’t know what role the Propecia played, but I have thick head of hair at 50 years old. I’ve never been diagnosed with depression, but am now wondering if some long standing sadness I’ve endured could have been prompted by the Propecia. I am considering stopping the drug to assess my mood.

Subj: Finesteride tablets?
Date: 4/8/2011
m from india… and I have finesteride tablets. …but brandname is not propecia…is it safe to take this? m scaring about the side effects of finesteride….my age is only 20.

Gavy

AskDocWeb: Sorry Gavy, it is beyond our ability to keep up on the drug safety laws of every country around the world. It’s just too time consuming. India does have a Food & Drugs Administration. You might check with them about drugs sold in your country.

Subj: Recovering from Propecia sexual side effects
Date: 4/11/2011
I took propecia for 4 months and quit after the sexual side effects. I think I got back most of my sexual drive in a month or so. After that i took propecia for couple of days and stopped it. I then have been taking procerin every day. Its been a month and my libido has not recovered. Is procerin causing the problem. do you have any statistics for how long does it take for people to recover from propecia side effect. I know it depends on the individual. Can you give us some distribution.

Gary

AskDocWeb: We haven’t seen any statistic for those recovering from Propecia side effects. However, there are a couple of class action lawsuits, one in Canada and one in the USA, that involve men who have not recovered sexual function after discontinuing Propecia, in some cases years after discontinuing. One of the reasons why men choose Procerin is that it doesn’t have these kinds of problems.

Subj: Lower dose of Propecia less often?
Date: 5/11/2011
I was wondering if there is any negative effect for taking 0.15mg (1/8 split) propecia once every week. I am okay if there is no hair growth but I dont want any sides. Any insights regarding lower dosage and lower frequency?

Gary

AskDocWeb: There are some rumors going around that taking a 0.5 mg daily dose of Propecia is 80% as effective as one a day and that 0.05 mg may be almost as effective however, there is no official research on that. Likewise there is no research on the side effects of taking lower dosages. Since the mean terminal half-life of Propecia is 5-6 hours (according to Merck) the body clears it out within 30 hours. If the rumor that the effect of Propecia on DHT can linger on for a week or two after discontinuing it are true then you may have something there. So far we have been unable to find any verification of that rumor.

Subj: 21 year old with very thin hairs
Date: 5/12/2011
i consult some hair transplant doctors online ..they all prefer finasteride (finpecia) +rogaine. I am 21 years old and very thin hairs and temples … what should I do … I am confused b/w provillus and finasteride … I will moving to Dubai within few months from India … and I know I have to choose another brand of finasteride in Dubai so???

Ricky

AskDocWeb: We suggest that when you get to Dubai, you consult with a dermatologist there. Getting an “in person” evaluation by a dermatologist is much more likely to produce results then any hair transplant doctors online.

Subj: Low energy level and pain in ankles
Date: 6/10/2011
I have noticed that my energy level is very low and that I get pain in my ankles when I’m on this drug. I have stopped for a few weeks and then decided to go back on it as I wasn’t sure that these side effects were in effect from it. After taking it for a week, the same side effects were noticed. Very low energy level, sleepy, pain in ankles, not very focused. Any one else experience the same side effects?

Subj: Serious sexual side effects
Date: 6/16/2011
Hi all, I have taken Propecia and its generic equivalent, Finasteride. I have been experiencing some serious sexual side effects. Low sex drive, brain fog, soft erections, less volume in ejaculate, less intense orgasm, irritable more often depressed, etc. I have read some other forums … and see many guys who are suffering like me. I see my shrink tomorrow and want to stop taking this crap, it’s poison for some men. I hope the side effects go away, however, in some men they are permanent from what I have read. This is scary.

Subj: My hair loss accelerated
Date: 6/18/2011
My GP gave me 5mg tablets of Finasteride, told me to take half a pill a day, amounting to 2.5mg/day. Is that too much? I keep reading that 1mg/day is the normal does. Been on it for about two weeks now and wow has my hair loss accelerated. No other side effects. Thanks,

Tom

AskDocWeb: The 5mg tablets of Finasteride (Proscar) are used alone or in combination with Cardura (doxazosin) to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), which is enlargement of the prostate gland. Many men take the 5mg tablets with no side effects at all. Here are the symptoms that may indicate a problem:

  • changes in the breasts such as increased size, lumps, pain, or nipple discharge
  • decreased sexual desire, loss of libido
  • decreased volume of ejaculate (amount of semen)
  • hives
  • inability to have or maintain an erection
  • itching
  • pain in the testicles
  • rash
  • swelling of the lips and face

If you experience any of these symptoms, call your doctor immediately.

An initial period of increased hair loss or shedding has been reported in a small percentage of men with all the products for hair loss. For some of those men the hair loss is so alarming that they quit using the product. Others wait it out, usually a few weeks, and then new growth kicks in and they recover what they lost. Let us know what you decide, and good luck Tom.

Subj: Immense hairloss
Date: 6/20/2011
I’ve been using finpecia for years~3. I recently switched to propecia and I’m seeing immense hairloss (last 3 months). Will this stop? Should I just go back to finpecia? Thanks.

Jim

AskDocWeb: Hum, that makes us wonder, did you buy Propecia online or did it come from a pharmacy? There are rumors floating around about counterfeit drugs being sold on the Internet. We recommend using a local pharmacy that can be held accountable rather than taking a chance on a website that may be in a foreign country. Your health is too important to trust online sources for medication.

Subj: Teratogenic effect?
Date: 6/26/2011
Hi! I’m a woman and has been prescribed proscar for hair loss for nearly 9months. I stopped 6 months ago when I noticed no major improvement. Now I am planing to get pregnant, can it still causes teratogenic effect now that I’ve stopped it.

Dimples

AskDocWeb: No, the teratogenic effect exists only if the drug is in a woman’s body while she is pregnant. After 6 months the drug is long gone from your system.

Subj: Tired of trading thicker hair for side-effects
Date: 6/29/2011
I’m 43, and I’ve been using Rogaine for 20 years (seems odd to think of that, actually) and Propecia for 8 years up until a few months ago. I discontinued the Propecia use because I got tired of trading thicker hair for the side-effects. Truth be told, though, that I should have been a poster-boy for these products– I responded very well to both. My pattern baldness is mild, maybe that is part of the reason.

After about 2 years on the Propecia I was having trouble maintaining erections, and when I had them they were noticeably less hard. The drug seems to gradually numb the connection between the brain and the penis, as well as desensitizing things. There have been times when it felt like my penis was completely numb. In addition, my overall desire for sex decreased dramatically (I’m normally a horndog.) It has also made me a somewhat irritable person (this may have more to do with the lack of sex drive).

I don’t necessarily believe what the drug manufacturer says about how safe it is. The numbers of men experiencing drastic side effects seems much higher than they admit. Propecia worked well for me– no doubt, but my doctor told me “any side effects will be mild and go away in about 8 weeks” — this was just not the case, and the stories I’ve read online are scary.

Two months ago my wife and I discussed the possibility that we may try to have a baby; this combined with side-effects and the horror-stories I’ve read about it (some guys NEVER got their sex drive back even after stopping usage) made me decide to stop using Propecia. So I have been off the drug for two months, am noticing a bit more shedding than usual, but I am still using the Rogaine 5% and hoping that it allows me to keep some of what the Propecia did for me. My sex drive is coming back quickly as is increased sensitivity, less irritability, and less frequency of absent-mindedness. Even if my hair falls out now, I’m still OK with having made this choice, I feel like I’m living a normal life again.

Subj: Lawsuits?
Date: 6/29/2011
I have been reading some disturbing news about the use of Propecia or Finasteride drugs that they can cause prostate or male breast cancer and that they could also cause erectile dysfunction in men. I wonder if anyone has heard about any lawsuits against the manufacturers of these drugs. (website plug removed)

Robert

AskDocWeb: There are two class action lawsuits going on right now because a number of men are suffering from continuing sexual dysfunction. One is in the USA and one in Canada, see page 80 for details. Read more feedback.
