Subj: What do you think?
Date: 12/1/2004
I saw that you said you were summing up your study of procerin and that you would post your results soon. I haven’t found them on your website and was wondering what you thought of the drug procerin. I have ordered it but have not yet taken it. I am an 18 year old male with a semi-receding hairline. It seems like shead hair daily but mostly in the receding hairline area and at the front of the scalp (don’t know if this is the vertex or what) so I’m kind of concerned since I’m only 18. Its probably safe to say that its in the family as my grandfather said he was pretty bald at a young age, and my father his very thin hair. I was just wondering if you would recommend anything and also to know what you thought of procerin. Thanks…
Anthony
AskDocWeb: Before answering your question, I want to make something very clear. Procerin is not a drug and any website that calls Procerin a drug is giving you false information. Read the ingredient list and you will see that it does not contain any drugs. Although it is sometimes referred to as an alternative to Propecia, it is an herbal alternative, a mixture of herbs and minerals. You can find the results of our study here.
Subj: Dividing Proscar
Date: 12/3/2004
I’ve been taking finasteride for 4 years and it definitely slowed hair loss. No side effects at all unless counting phobia of losing hair again. I have another question though. There’s a drug called Proscar which comes in pills with 5mg of finasteride each. Propecia pills have 1mg of finasteride and are much more expensive than Proscar. My question is: would buying Proscar pills and then preparing 5 pills out of each of them decrease the efficiency of finasteride? I’ve been doing that for some time now and I’m afraid finasteride is not as efficient as it should be. You know what I mean? Taking 1 Proscar pill and then making 5 Propecia pills out of it. Thx
Gerd
AskDocWeb: We have heard from men who divide the Proscar into four parts of 1.25mg each but you are the first to suggest dividing it into fifths. That would be pretty hard to do with the pill splitters we have seen. If you are getting the Proscar from a foreign country, it could be a counterfeit. That would have a lot to do with its effectiveness.
Subj: Concern about breast enlargement with Propecia
Date: 12/4/2004
Hello, I am 26 years old and I consider taking propecia and I wondered, if my breast get bigger and softer as a side effect of this medicine, then if I’ll stop taking it, will the breast return to it’s original size?
Uri
AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer, all side effects disappeared when Propecia was discontinued.
Subj: Concerned about having a healthy baby
Date: 12/7/2004
If I use propecia and have unprotected sex, will this have any affect on my girlfriend, we are not trying for a baby but I am concerned that it may some side affects for her or that one day it may affect her chances of having a health baby.
Dim
AskDocWeb: As long as she does not come into contact with the contents of the pills, according to the manufacturer, there is no cause for concern.
Subj: Trying to conceive
Date: 12/11/2004
I’m trying to conceive and not having been successful, wonder if the drug could be the culprit, even after propecia is out of system for 2 years?
Katrina
AskDocWeb: You didn’t say who was taking the Propecia, you or your man. In either case it sounds like it is time to visit your doctor. You can find out where the problem is by both of you getting tested.
Subj: Avoiding malfunction
Date: 12/21/2004
Hi, my name is John. I have been taking propecia for 2 years. Lately I have read about side effects and would like to know if the drug can affect the formation of the fetus in any way for people planning to have a baby, and what can be done to avoid any malfunction? Thank you,
John
AskDocWeb: Yes, Propecia can affect the formation of the fetus. Women should avoid coming into contact with the contents of the Propecia pill. If they do, the ingredients can be absorbed through the skin and can cause birth defects in the sex organs of male children born to those women.
Subj: Using Mintop – no growth
Date: 12/21/2004
I am using mintop for the past 5 months but I have not seen hair growth on my bald areas. Plz explain. I am 31 years.
Rubesh
AskDocWeb: As with all hair growth products, in our opinion, if you haven’t seen at least some results after six months, we would conclude that it does not work for you. Either accept your hair loss or try something else.
Subj: Comments on Propecia
Date: 12/21/2004
Hi. I took this drug faithfully for 2.5 years or more. I have now been off of it for over a year and am glad I quit. As far as hair growth is concerned, I realize that it was more paranoia than anything. As well, unless you have a significant lack thereof in one area, this is a hard thing to analyze or judge on any other level as far as other results. I personally was looking to slow the process of receding hair on my hairline. Whether it did or not I can’t say but my overall hair changes haven’t been so significant as to say anyhow. Being off of the drug hasn’t created any notable changes. This is the kind of drug that I feel should almost come with a doctor or that more doctors should be involved with things going on with the patients.
I found that this drug greatly decreased my sex drive, erection potential and made orgasms fizzly or lackluster. I also noted weight gain, probably from increased estrogen and a soreness at the bottom of my lungs in so far as breathing. The kind of pain that was dull, but might be compared to someone who has been smoking or something to that end. Not sure if that’s a goon comparison or not. I chose ultimately to drop the drug due to all of the above but on some level because my girlfriend(s) noted my lack of sexual interest, etc. This is/was highly unlike me. So I intermittently I would stop taking it for several days and would immediately notice a shift or upgrade in overall mood, sex drive, energy level, etc. I am today 34 and began taking this I suppose when I was 31. In any case, I feel that such risks are hardly worth the money and that either going advanced surgery or just taking good ol Saw Palmetto. I feel that this drug’s side effects are quite subtle in a way and only over time does one come to note them. Simply not worth it. I can only hope that my time in taking it hasn’t caused any long term potential danger for my health. Thanks for your time.
Shannon
P.S. I feel Propecia is also a drug that has not only not dropped it’s prices since it’s inception, they have actually raised them over the years.
Subj: Propecia dosage?
Date: 12/22/2004
I have been using propecia for 5 years without any ill effects and enjoy the benefits of reduced hair loss. However during my annual check-up, my doc mentioned that “recent research stated that taking 1mil tablet every other day” is just as effective as taking the product daily. I have searched the web but have been unable to find any such research backing up this claim. Are you aware of any information on the topic of this reduced dosage recommendation?
Jay
AskDocWeb: All the information I’ve read say 1 mg daily is the required dosage. You might ask your doctor to provide you with a copy of this study or have him ask his Merck representative to give you one. Drug company sales people are usually happy to provide patients with any information requested.
Subj: Concerned about sperm
Date: 12/24/2004
I have heard a lot of information relating to Propecia and its effect on sperm count. In addition, I have been told by several doctors and pharmacists that a man should stop taking propecia several years prior to starting a family to due potential birth defects. AS it is so harmful to women considering pregnancy, I am wondering how and why this is not a concern for a man’s sperm?
Heather
AskDocWeb: It is a concern for many men. With the known sexual side effects of Propecia, I would stop taking it one year before trying to conceive a child.
Subj: Hair-genesis oral gells
Date: 12/25/2004
what do you know about Hair-genesis oral gells. Also, can I use them together with propecia.
Mark
AskDocWeb: The last time we looked at Hair-Genesis their guarantee had so much double talk and special conditions, it convinced us they have very little faith in their products. That aside, we see nothing that would prevent you using them together.
Subj: 4 years on Propecia
Date: 12/29/2004
I have been taking Propecia for 4 years and have had great results. My hair had been receding but has since stopped and it is thicker than before. I have had absolutely no sexual side effects and my 8 and 10 year old daughters think their Dad is ‘cool’ because he can grow his hair out a bit longer without looking like a worn out hippie.
To those experiencing sexual side effects or mood swings, I would suggest exercise. I am a moderate runner (8-10 miles/week) and do some limited weight training. I am no gym rat! I run two companies and so I am extremely busy. Exercise relieves stress, improves self image and definitely helps the sex life. Maybe some reported side effects of Propecia could be the result of a sedentary lifestyle. I am not a doctor but have used Propecia for quite awhile and think it is great.

Subj: Finpecia
Date: 12/29/2004
I have a little pain like feeling on the bottom left side of stomach. I don’t know what kind of effect. Is it because of taking Finpecia.
A
AskDocWeb: The pain you are feeling in the left lower abd area may be a sexual transmitted disease symptom. You should see what your doctor says about it.
Subj: Generic Finasteride
Date: 12/31/2004
Hi, I want to know are generic Finasteride have the same affect and safty as the ones Merk make? I have been on the ones made by Merk for the past couple of years and notice the generic ones cost much cheaper.
Jason
AskDocWeb: There is no generic for Propecia. That so-called generic Finasteride is counterfeit Propecia and is not FDA approved. It is, however, available through many drug dealers in other countries.
Subj: Help
Date: 12/31/2004
Hi, I have been taking finpecia (Indian substitute of propecia) for 2 weeks now and have already started getting less or no ejaculate at times. I want to recover. With your advices given in the forum, I have discontinued the drug completely. I am not sure what else can I do to make things better.
Ashez
AskDocWeb: You will just have to be patient and wait for the drug to get out of your system. And it may take awhile but hang in there and you should return to normal.
Subj: How long does Proscar take to work?
Date: 1/1/2005
I wanted to make a post I was wondering how? If this is how you post, I would like to ask some questions about Proscar. I have been taking this drug Proscar for a little over 2 months. I haven’t seen enough change if there is any. Cutting the pill is tricky since its not a square or rectangle. I was wondering how long does it take. I only have hair problems on the top of my head. It looks like its leading to the front from the top. How long does it take to work!??
Partrick
AskDocWeb: Results differ from person to person and will take months to show up. Our personal opinion is that, if you haven’t seen results in six months, give it up. The manufacturer says to give it a year. In any case you will have to be patient. Read more feedback.
