Subj: Discoloration and itching
Date: 5/29/2008
Ever since I’ve used this product (13 weeks), there has been a marked improvement in the acne. They have all gone, the old marks are reducing, and some fine lines and wrinkles seem to have diminished. But at the same time that I started using it, I’ve developed some discoloration on the skin of my neck. I do not apply renova on the neck. These spots are light, well demarcated and sometimes itch at night. Is it related to renova or is it just a co-incidence.

Vinita

AskDocWeb: Renova should not cause itching. If it continues you may want to see a dermatologist.

Subj: Renova is wonderful
Date: 6/2/2008
I have used Renova since 1992. It’s wonderful. I will be 50 years old in a couple of months and people don’t ever believe I’m over my mid-thirties. I tanned when I was a teen and in my early 20s, but have not done so in about 20 years. I have very fair skin, blue eyes, and blonde hair. I’ve never had cosmetic surgery. Last year I started using Obagi also. Love it!

Subj: Enlarged pores and uneven skin
Date: 7/1/2008
I have enlarged pores and uneven skin. Does renova help these issues?

Chris

AskDocWeb: We haven’t heard from anyone that Renova has helped with pores, Retin-A yes but not with Renova.

Subj: He couldn’t believe how young I still look
Date: 7/6/2008
I have used Renova since 1991. I don’t tan and always wear sunscreen. I had brown spots from tanning as a teen. My complexion is smooth and clear. I’m 50 years old and most people think I am in my early 30s. I saw an old school mate recently and he said that I look just like I did in high school. He told everyone in the room that he couldn’t believe how young I still look. I attribute this to staying out of the sun and using Renova daily for 17 years.

Subj: Enlarged pores and pitted scars
Date: 7/6/2008
Does Renova help with enlarged pores and pitted scars?

Chris

AskDocWeb: Yes, the manufacturer says it helps surface roughness which would include enlarged pores and pitted scars.

Subj: Renova + facial waxing = burns
Date: 7/18/2008
I have been using Renova for about 2 months. I have a facial waxing without thinking about the affect Renova might have. I now have facial burns all over my face. Will these disappear and how should I treat them?

Vallerie

AskDocWeb: Thanks for sharing about your burning issue and hopefully others will remember that waxing is not recommended while using Renova. In most cases such burns will disappear as the skin heals however, chemical burn should be evaluated for possible treatment by your doctor.

Subj: Difference between Avita and Renova
Date: 7/22/2008
I am wondering if Avita can be used the same way as Renova. I have a tube of Avita that was prescribed previously by a dermatologist for “acne” but have recently seen a cosmetic dermatologist for a consultation and he had given me a prescription for Renova which is very pricey. Before I fill, can you please let me know what the difference is if any? Thank you.

Kelly

AskDocWeb: The difference between Renova and Avita is mostly in the name. Both are creams forms of the generic tretinoin. The Avita cream strength is 0.025% where Renova comes in both 0.020% and 0.050% strength formulas.

Subj: Pigmentation on cheeks
Date: 8/15/2008
Hi, I have acne pigmentation on my cheeks, and I m using glycolic acid 12%. Can renova prove better than glycolic acid to remove acne pigmentation. And what is active ingredient of renova.

Amit

AskDocWeb: The 12% glycolic acid is a stronger product for treating pigmentation. Renova is just a brand name of the drug tretinoin, made from vitamin A.

Subj: A softer Retin-A?
Date: 8/25/2008
My skin turns red using renova, is there a softer ret-A I can use instead?

C

AskDocWeb: Yes, Retin-A comes in 0.01%, 0.025%, 0.05% and 0.1% strengths. The 0.01% would be the softest.

Subj: Laser treatment
Date: 9/6/2008
Can I have laser treatment for facial hair removal while using Renova?

Mary

AskDocWeb: Typically you would stop applying any med to your face while undergoing laser treatment and your doctor will advise you about how soon after the treatment you can start using it again.

Subj: Renova
Date: 9/15/2008
Does Renova still make a .05 version, or only a .025? I have a prescription from my Derm for .05, but several of pharmacies said Renova only comes in .025.

Digby

AskDocWeb: The availability may have something to do with where you live. When we wrote our report in 2003 Renova came in two strengths, a .02% cream and a .05% cream.

Subj: Renova 0.05%
Date: 9/19/2008
Could you let me know why renova 0.05 is no longer available?

Cristina

AskDocWeb: It looks like the .05% version of Renova has been discontinued in the US and possibly Canada but not in Mexico. There is no word from the company as to why that happened.

Subj: Renova
Date: 10/6/2008
I’ve been using Renova for 2 months. I don’t see any improvement. My doctor told me it would take 10 months to a year to see improvement.

Nancy

Subj: Results are amazing!
Date: 10/15/2008
I am 28 yrs old and am of African American decent. I started using Renova at the .02% level in August 2008. It was prescribed by my dermatologist as a result of dark scratch-like marks on both sides of my face. I was concerned because I always had flawless skin and the marks stood out and I wasn’t happy with using make-up to cover the discolored areas. Well, it is now October and the mark are almost completely gone and I’ve only experienced mild irritation, mainly after I wash my face (I recommend using Dove beauty bar, not soap). I also used Ambi fade cream in conjunction, which contains a lightening agent, Alpha Hydroxy, and vitamin E, I believe. The results are amazing!! my skin is glowing and incredibly smooth, no line, no blemish. Please contact your doctor and ask if using other products with Renova is recommended. My doctor was the one who recommend Ambi as it doesn’t contain strong ingredients like most fade creams do. Not sure if the Renova would have worked better without the Ambi, but I sure glad I tried both. Hope my experience helps.

Subj: Brown spots
Date: 10/16/2008
I a using Renova and after several weeks I find I have many brown spots I never had before. Will these go away?

Lois

AskDocWeb: Renova is used to treat brown spots so we wonder what might be causing yours. You might check with a dermatologist to find out.

Subj: Generic Renova
Date: 11/11/2008
I used renova for years (stopped for about 2 years and recently got another prescription. Because renova prices have risen considerably I took the generic. Boy am I sorry…this stuff is burning the heck out of my face. At first I thought maybe it was just the mix of moisterizers with the renova generic so I would stop the renova gen. for a few days. Tried again last night after waiting a full four days and now I am burned again on certain areas of my face. Has anyone else reported severe burning from the generic? manufactured by dpt labs in TX and distributed by spear dermatology (purchased at costco pharmacy) 0.05% still cost 98.00 for 40g. possibly I should go back to reg renova 0.02% which I think is the only strength they sell now.

Subj: Moisturizer?
Date: 11/14/2008
Can I put a moisturizer on at night AFTER I apply Renova?

Joyce

AskDocWeb: Yes, using a moisturizer is a good idea. It gets rid of that tight feeling on your face when trying to go to sleep. Just allow the Renova to completely dry, about 20 minutes.

Subj: Washing one’s face
Date: 1/7/2009
Re: Renova…Why must one wait for 20 or 30 minutes after washing one’s face,…before applying Renova? (I don’t have time to wait that long…after washing face before bed!) Will putting on the Renova 5 minutes after washing face make it less (or more?) effective?

Meg

AskDocWeb: It is less effective if the skin is still saturated with water because less Renova is absorbed.

Subj: Buy generic tretinoin
Date: 1/13/2009
I understand Renova is available as the generic tretinoin. Can you recommend where I can buy it from a reputable source? Thanks.

Suzanne

AskDocWeb: Currently the only place we recommend is your local drugstore.

Subj: Seriously dry skin
Date: 1/22/2009
My derm gave me some samples of Renova .02% along with a script-consequently, not enough clear directions on applications. My fault, clearly. Happy to have found this site, and all the EXCELLENT info & advice. She did recommend I try CeraVe moisturizer for my seriously dry skin, which I will do & report back on the results. Should the Renova only be used at night or does anyone use it in the morning/day? FYI: Any and all side effects should be reported to: www.fda.gov/medwatch/

Julie

Subj: Shelflife of Renova
Date: 1/30/2009
What is the shelf life of Renova .02%?

Ann

AskDocWeb: Since we were unable to locate data to show the typical shelf life of Renova you will need to check on the tube to find out when your product expires.

Subj: White spots, redness, and peeling
Date: 1/31/2009
I just started with renova and I have white spots and redness between my nose and lip and peeling besides. Will this go away?

jan

AskDocWeb: Side effects that may go away during treatment, include redness, dry skin, peeling, stinging, or a feeling of burning. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor.

Subj: Blood pressure?
Date: 2/5/2009
I was wondering if this product can raise blood pressure?

Sonya

AskDocWeb: No, Renova has not been reported to raise blood pressure.

Subj: Face turned bright red and burns
Date: 2/18/2009
I told my doctor I’d had a chemical face peel at age fifty-six. I’m not sixty-four, and my dermatologist recommended Renova. My face has turned bright red and burns terribly after six days use. I called and was told to take two nights off, then resume for every other night until the burning stops. Is this really a good idea? Thanks!

Elena

AskDocWeb: Taking a couple of nights off to give your skin a chance to recover makes sense, as does using it every other night until your skin gets used to it. According to the patient insert, the red skin and burning are possible side effects when first starting use.

Subj: Brown spots
Date: 3/14/2009
I have been using Renova for about two weeks, I have noticed that I got a some brown spots that seem to be getting darker even after my skin has peeled away. A friend told me that this medication can leave permanent dark spots if you get the minimal sun exposure, is this true?

lucy

AskDocWeb: Just the opposite, Renova typically removes age spots by reducing the amount of melanin that the skin cells produce.
