Renova around the eyes?
Date: 5/5/2011
Can you use renova on your eyelide, crows feet and under eye area?

Bernie

AskDocWeb: Many women report using Renova around their eyes for years without any problems. The patient information says to “Avoid getting Renova Emollient Cream in your eyes, on the inside or angles of your nose, or in your mouth. If you get Renova Emollient Cream in your eyes, rinse thoroughly with water.” The main thing is to keep the Renova from getting in the eyeball or near the corners of the eyes where it may leach onto the globe.

Sometimes when you first start to use Renova under and around your eyes you will get a temporary worsening of the lines but that only lasts a few weeks until your skin gets used to the product. This can usually be avoided if you go real slow and work your way up to every night use. Renova isn’t as drying to the skin as Retin-A but if dryness does become a problem using a moisturizer on the area about 20 minutes to half an hour after applying Renova usually takes care of that. Note that it may take up to 6 months to see the maximum changes to your skin.

One of the first users of Renova
Date: 6/2/2011
I was one of the first users of renova. Before that I had Retin-A for acne but used the cream on my one sleep wrinkle at 21. My mom shared her Renova Rx with me when I was 33. It worked amazingly for 3 months BUT THEN my skin got so thin that the slightest movement would make it break and scar.

10 years later I still have 4 scratches from that first usage of Renova. Also – it made my facial hair slightly increase and I believe my head hair become dryer and thinner. This could possibly be due to Vitamin A sensitivity on my part. I used it on and off for years, always wondering, but never googling to see if there was a connection- but I do see now that others have had this effect.

Additionally, on another site, not one but TWO doctors said it was okay to use around eyes. NO, IT IS NOT. This I definitely know. I only tried it around eyes twice. I got a red blood spot in my eye within a week or two. It either got into the bloodstream through the skin or perhaps sweated into the corner of eye during sleep. I discontinued and it went away. I had never had that before.

2 years later I tried again to test it and the same thing. Never had a problem otherwise. I am part Irish and perhaps have skin on the more sensitive side. Point is – doctors don’t know everything about side effects on individuals. I actually LOVED Renova, but perhaps it wasn’t worth the sensitive scalp and hair issue? I used it for so long. My hair/scalp might not ever return to normal.

20 years of Renova
Date: 6/13/2011
I have been using renova for 20 years and the results have been amazing. I am now in my seventies and wonder if I should use a stronger cream than 05. As renova is very pricey will tretinion work as well?

Kay

AskDocWeb: Hi Kay. Those are different names for the same medication. Renova is a brand name and Tretinoin is the generic name of the same drug.

Eye brow threading
Date: 7/24/2011
Is eye brow threading & other facial hair threading safe with renova?

Barbara

AskDocWeb: Many beauty salons offer threading as a safe alternative to waxing for those using Renova, Retin-A and other products that sensitize the skin.

My dark spots were getting darker
Date: 9/2/2011
In regard to the comment made on 3/14/09, I also started using Renova 2% for the brown spots on the side of my cheeks and within less than 2 weeks noticed my dark spots were getting darker and I also notice blotchiness that I never seemed to notice before. I did all that I was supposed to do in regard to the proper use of the product. Needless to say I was highly disappointed and decided to discontinue use fearing the darkening might become permanent. Does this mean this product is not for me?

Debra

AskDocWeb: Renova typically fades dark spots by reducing the amount of melanin produced in skin cells. However, that “typically” does not mean that it works for everyone. Remember that exposure to ultra violet light and sunlight is known to stimulate the production of melanin, which can make dark spots worse.

keratosi pilaris
Date: 10/21/2011
Seven years ago, I broke out from head to toe with a very bad case of keratosi pilaris. I was given kenalog shots, clobetasol 0.05, and other steriods. In recent months, I have noticed what is called skin atrophy under my breasts, under arms and groin region. My friend told me about renova but my doctor told me it was to irritating for my skin type. I no you can not get rid of it but I read over time it will become scarring and turn white and that vitamin a capsules could help reduce the scarring even more. Could you comment on this?

Eva

AskDocWeb: The topical application of Renova is an effective treatment for some people but not for everyone. On some skin types it can cause painful skin irritations, severe dryness, redness and peeling. Your doctor should be able advise you on the best option for your skin. Most options focus on softening the keratin deposits in the skin but there is no single treatment that works for everyone.

Although you may not like the sandpaper-like appearance of your skin, keratosis pilaris typically does not have long-term health implications. In fact, in some cases it disappears by age 30.

Epiquin micro 4%
Date: 11/21/2011
I’m using renova 0.05% for about 3 weeks and know I have broke out, is this normal? If so how long will I keep brakeing out? Also wana use epiquin micro 4% hydroquinone 4 sun spots, does this product have steroid? I wana use one w/out a steroid.

Alex

AskDocWeb: Hello Alex and welcome. The use of retinoid products often comes with a period of adjustment where your skin gets used to the product. For the first 2 to 3 weeks of treatment with Renova, your skin condition may appear to worsen. This is expected and your skin should improve from this point on. According to the EpiQuin Micro website, it has a steroid-free formula.
