Subj: Retin-a side effects
Date: 11/23/2005
I have used retin-a for6 months. I have blotchy skin, rosacea, and sun damage. The first 2 weeks where terrible, with peeling and more blotchy spots. Dr said the more damage I had the more I would peel. On a return visit, the nurse told me to use t-sal shampoo to wash my face, that clears the peeling skin off. I also use aquaphor moisturizer and sun screen regularly. I thought of going off the retin a but I do get complements on looking 12 years younger all the time, so I guess will put up with the peeling. Can’t wear any foundation or powder though, because of the flakiness.

Subj: Adult acne treatment
Date: 11/23/2005
I’m a 23 year old married for a year now. I’ve never had acne even during my teenage, but now I suddenly developed acne only on my forehead. It started off with some tiny boils and itchiness. My doctor prescribed minocin, and retin a. It’s been a month now and no change. Can you please suggest what I can do? Moreover I have my own inhibitions about retin a. I’m scared it’ll make my skin worse. Please help me.

ssburra

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may need the help of a dermatologist. Your physician can give you a referral.

Subj: Retin A
Date: 12/8/2005
I have been using Retin A for almost 2 years. I just wanted to reduce fine lines and smooth out my skin tone. Now, I guess I am using it to maintain. I use it every night after cleansing my face with Cetaphil. How long do you recommend using Retin A? I haven’t had any negative side effects. Thank you.

Sheila

AskDocWeb: There doesn’t seem to be an upper limit. Women have used retin-A for many years.

Subj: Retin-A and depression
Date: 12/11/2005
My daughter just started using retin-a, I was wondering if there is any depression associated with the use of this medication.
Thank you,

Jayne

AskDocWeb: No, there is no connection.

Subj: Retin-A cancer?
Date: 12/15/2005
I heard through friends that Retin-A used in laboratory mice caused cancer? Is this correct? If so, have there been any cases of cancer in humans when using this drug for acne?

Nayomi

AskDocWeb: There are no reports that Retin-A caused any cancer in people.

Subj: Scaring
Date: 12/30/2005
I have been using Retin-A for about 2 months now. My acne is so much better now, but I still have scaring. I would like to get a sunbed to help the scaring but am unsure how long after using the gel I should wait.

Sara

AskDocWeb: The sun bed will not help with scaring and is not recommended as long as you use Retin-A.

Subj: Retin-A under eyelids
Date: 1/10/2006
I have used retin a for a few weeks now, and did get some under my eyelids. One eye has flaking and I have noticeable wrinkles under my eye now. Will this go away? Is there any type of topical ointment or such that I can put on it at this point. Will the wrinkles under my one eye stay there permanently?

Raquel

AskDocWeb: It is not likely to be permanent. This should go away but be sure to use a good night cream around your eyes.

Subj: Caution
Date: 1/16/2006
After using Retin A cream for just two weeks my face resembled a baboon’s bottom. Very red and unsightly. Retin A seems to have made my skin ultra sensitive to sunlight and increased temperature. I’ve been suffering these effects for a couple of months now without improvement even after consulting a dermatologist. I would strongly advise caution to those considering using this preparation.

Mollu

Subj: Red watery eyes
Date: 1/31/2006
Can Retin-A cause red and watery eyes? I have been using Retin-A (.1%) for 16 years to help prevent wrinkles. The past several years my eyes are cloudy and red, and often bloodshot. My diet is very controlled. I do take Vilantae’s (10)B-5 capsules and Juice Plus+ each day. However, my eyes were red prior to taking B-5 and I have been taking JP for 12 years. Please advise.

Cheryl

AskDocWeb: We haven’t heard of this one, but it could indicate another problem. We suggest you make an appointment with your doctor and have him examine your eyes.

Subj: Two years of bad results
Date: 2/2/2006
I used retina A for a long time. It reddened my skin and swelled it…doctor says it is temporary but it has stayed there for 2 years now. I am depressed. Kindly help.

Anjum

AskDocWeb: How kind was it for your doctor not to tell to get off of that immediately! Some doctors need to be yelled at. Make an appointment with a dermatologist to find out if there is a fix for this problem.

Subj: Retin-A from Mexico
Date: 2/2/2006
I have purchased Retin-A in Mexico and wondering how long the medication is good…there was no expire date on the boxes. I bought them March 2005. How long are the tubes good?

Shawn

AskDocWeb: Without having a date on the container there is no way to tell. They could be expired right now. That’s the risk you take when buying meds in Mexico.

Subj: Facial hair
Date: 2/3/2006
I used to have facial hair but had it removed one year ago with laser treatments. Now I’m starting on retin-a and I’m afraid that it will encorage my facial hair to come back. Is this likely?

Sara

AskDocWeb: Use Retin-A sparingly on your face. It should not cause your hair to grow back.

Subj: Adverse effects
Date: 2/6/2006
I used Retin A cream for just two weeks and am experiencing adverse effects. My face becomes very red with large red capillaries in response to sunlight and a rise in temperature. Even covering my face with a white cotton mask (two layers of cotton) and wearing a wide brimmed hat (especially when driving my car long distances) has failed to stop symptoms which are not only disfiguring but painful. I have consulted a dermatologist but face has shown no improvement. Do you have any feedback from people adversely effected by Retin A which might be helpful to me.

Molly

AskDocWeb: Yes, other people have experienced the same thing. When you discontinue use of the retin-a cream, continue to use a moisturizer and if your face doesn’t return to normal or if you don’t start to see improvement, see another dermatologist for alternative treatments.

Subj: Tretinoin use on neck
Date: 2/20/2006
I am 45 and just started using Tretinoin for wrinkles and am using it on my neck as well as my face. Is this ok? Will it improve the skin on my neck. Also I have a mole, is it ok if the product covers the mole? Thank you for your help,

Juju

AskDocWeb: We haven’t heard of anyone using this on their neck but yes, you can use it over a mole unless this mole is irregular and very dark. In that case we would have it removed first.

Subj: Scared of scabs and scarring
Date: 2/21/2006
Hi, I am using retin-a (dermatologist prescribed) and I wasn’t aware of not using facial wax to remove facial hair while on this medication. Little patches of my skin peeled off (not a huge portion, just 4 patches of an average pinky nail size on my cheek and above my lip). I am very scared that this will cause scabs and severe scarring. Any advice on how to prevent this would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Montse

AskDocWeb: Your skin is very sensitive to the facial wax after using retin-a. If you insist on using both, we would do the wax an hour before applying the Retin-a or not at all.

Subj: Cysts
Date: 2/21/2006
I have been using retin a micro for about 2 weeks now at night and benzaclin in the morning. Is this a good combination? I went through the peeling stage but now I seem to be getting cysts under my skin. Is this normal?

Kdw

AskDocWeb: No this isn’t normal. To be on the safe side, have these cysts checked out by a dermatologist before continuing.

Subj: Wrinkles look worse
Date: 2/22/2006
I have acne scars and asked my doctor if I could apply a topical cream to improve the texture and wrinkles. He said retin A. A small dab at night. He carries the cream called Tretinoin 0.05% in his office. There are no directions on the tube. I used it twice. The first time was fine. After the second application I have terrible red blotches and my skin is so dry and flaky. The wrinkles look worse and the skin texture looks horrible.

I have tried moisturizers and nothing is working. It is noted by one review suggesting that a moisturizer containing humectants be used. What is that ingredient and what products have that ingredient?

Judith

AskDocWeb: We don’t know what products have that ingredient but you might ask your local pharmacist. It sounds like you may be going through the normal adjustment period with this drug, it will get better. Many women have used this with good results.

Subj: Mixing things with Retin-A?
Date: 2/26/2006
I use glyco 6-12% in day & retino at night. Tell me how to use sunscreen and can I mix glyco and retino together and use at night?

Ria

AskDocWeb: It is a bad idea to mix anything with Retin-A or within a half hour of using Retin-A (before or after). For sunscreen follow the directions on the container. We suggest using a product with Zinc oxide (10%) and Titanium Dioxide (5%a) but avoid relying on Avobenzone. It doesn’t last long enough to be worthwhile.

Subj: Peels and Retin A
Date: 2/28/2006
Hi, I’ve just starting using Retin A 0.05% nothing seems to be happening. No reaction, not even dryness. Is this normal. I have been using Glycolic Peels at home would that slow up the process for the Retin A doing its job?

Tracey

AskDocWeb: Using peels while using Retin A is not recommended.

Subj: Exfoliation?
Date: 2/28/2006
Is it good to exfoliate the skin with exfoliator products while using Retin-A or does Retin-A exfoliate?

Susan

AskDocWeb: Using other products to exfoliate the skin is not recommended, just use Retin-A.

Subj: Help with scars?
Date: 3/1/2006
Does retin-a help lesson scars?

Curious

AskDocWeb: Since it decreases wrinkles, it may help with scarring. There is a special cream out that helps with scarring, consult your physician or your druggist about this.

Subj: Swollen face
Date: 3/2/2006
I have been using retin a .1% for about 2 weeks for cosmetic reasons. It had been working well, until 2 days ago. I woke with a very swollen face and from the nose down, feels like scales, burns and now looks like it is starting to flake. Is this normal? When will the swelling and burning go away. I got this when I lived in Florida, as we just moved here. Thanks

Kimberly

AskDocWeb: The scales and flaking are a normal stage you pass through when starting Retin-A. But we are concerned about the facial swelling and the burning sensation you are feeling, this should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: Decent results
Date: 3/2/2006
I’ve been using Retin A .25% almost a month with decent results. I had some mild flaking in certain areas, but nothing like I was prepared for. I wash my face with a gentle cleanser, then dry with a towel and apply the cream immediately afterward. So far this has caused no adverse affects. My question is MUST I wait 30 minutes after washing to apply for better results? I thought the reason for waiting was to keep irritation to a low.

Marie

AskDocWeb: If you apply it while the skin is wet then too much is absorbed into your blood stream and side effects become a real possibility.
