Subj: Skin peeling off
Date: 6/1/2006
I’ve had chest acne for about 2 years. My doctor put me on retin-A micro a month ago. My chest is really red where I apply the retin-A. It also has a “polished” look from the skin peeling off. It doesn’t hurt, but I’m wondering if this is normal.

AskDocWeb: Some redness and scaling are normal reactions as your skin becomes adjusted to this medication. If severe irritation develops, notify your doctor. Your dosage may need to be adjusted.

Subj: Age spots
Date: 6/1/2006
Is there any possibility that Retin-A could make age spots worse? I’ve been using it for a couple of months, and generally like, but have noticed that some smaller age spots I had appear to be getting bigger. I use an SPF 30 sunscreen and try to remember to wear a hat when I go out. I also use a glycolic acid product in the a.m.

AskDocWeb: No, it should not cause age spots on your skin.

Subj: Scars and dark spots
Date: 6/5/2006
I have dark spots and I think scars too on my face. I was wondering if this Retin-A Micro actually makes scars and dark spots fade away and if it does how long does it take for them to go away?

AskDocWeb: It may provide minor help with your dark spots or scars, more with wrinkles and acne. A glycolic acid product may also lighten the dark spots.

Subj: Retin-A is amazing
Date: 6/7/2006
I have been using Retin-A for almost a year now with minor irritation (light peeling and redness around nose and lips) during the first 6 weeks of treatment. And the light burning sensation stopped after the 3rd or 4th week of treatment. After 4 months of treatment I noticed a sizable decrease in the size and number of acne lesion appearing on my face. I had sever nodular acne and now my face is almost always clear. I do every once in a while get little red or white head acne usually around the time of my menstruation but considering the severity of my acne before I can definitely handle a little breakout here and there. This drug is amazing. I suggest trying it out but don’t give up in the first 4 months keep using it till you get improvements

Subj: Acne marks and pigmentation
Date: 6/7/2006
I am 49 years old please could you advise me if Retin-A is good for my acne marks and pigmentation.

AskDocWeb: A fade cream is good for pigmentation discoloration, like Palmer’s Skin Success. Retin-A will decrease the size of acne marks, but they may not go away completely.

Subj: Temperature affect on Avita cream?
Date: 6/9/2006
I left my Avita cream in the car on a hot day. The temperature was likely over 100 in the car. Is the cream still safe to use or might it have been damaged by the heat?

New Avita user

AskDocWeb: Yes, the heat destroys the effectiveness of Avita. Most health products should be kept below 77 degree F (25 degrees C).

Subj: Retin-A .01% gel
Date: 6/10/2006
I was given the lowest concentration Retin A .01% gel by my Dermatologist (I have very sensitive skin). Is it as effective as the higher concentrations or am I wasting my time?

AskDocWeb: No, you are not wasting your time, it may take a little longer but you can still get the benefits.

Subj: Retin-A in eye
Date: 6/10/2006
think I may have gotten retin A in my one eye – accidentally rubbed eye after applying – my eye is dry and RED – what can I do? It’s been thee days since the mishap.

AskDocWeb: At this point you should go to your doctor and have your eye checked out. If this happens to anyone else, rinse your eye with water ASAP for 20 minutes and consult a doctor.

Subj: Roaccutane
Date: 6/11/2006
Hi everyone, I am from Middle east which all knew its very hot in summer. I have some pimples in my face, it’s sometime become too many and sometimes less. Anyway I tried many products nothing solve my problem. I am using Obagy products for now. The Dr. is advising me to use roaccutane for 6 months although I am seeing that my case dose not need this kind of medicines plus I am going to marry after 1 year. Is there any advice to go with it or just apply obajy products on my skin rather than using roaccutane, plz help me? Also before I get pregnant how many months I should stop the usage of Roaccutane.

AskDocWeb: To be safe, we would wait three months after discontinuing the Roaccutane before attempting pregnancy.

Subj: Using other products with Retin-A
Date: 6/13/2006
I started using retin-a a couple of days ago, but my doctor was vague on how I can keep up exfoliation and moisturizing. I moisturized twice a day with a medicated facial lotion and exfoliated with the neutrogena microderm abrasion kit every other day. Before I started the retin-a I also had a medicated face wash and a toner. Should I discontinue usage of all or any of these products? I don’t know if mixing topical agents with the cream is good. What can I still use, and when should I use it?

AskDocWeb: You are not to use abrasion kits with Retin-A or medicated facial lotions. For best results just use a gentle facial cleanser to cleanse your face, allow 20 minutes to dry before applying Retin-A.

Subj: Dark spots
Date: 6/14/2006
I have Keratosis pilaris on my arms, I tried chemical peels and micro, which seemed to work fine, the aesthetician also put me on Retin-A Micro which irritated my skin at first but then it seemed to be fine; then she did another chemical peel, now I’m left with dark spots on my arms, I was wondering if Retin can help me on clearing those dark spots, specially now with summer approaching soon!

AskDocWeb: No it is not likely to help. You might try a fade cream. You can buy them over the counter or you can get a stronger one by prescription.

Subj: Hives
Date: 6/19/2006
My sister has been on Retin A for 15 years with no apparent problems. Two years ago she started breaking out intermittently with minor to major hives. Could the Retin A be causing this?

AskDocWeb: Yes, it could be anything, including Retin-a.

Subj: Sun block?
Date: 6/21/2006
I have been using retin a 0.025% for 5 weeks. I have no reaction at all, I have seen just a little improvement and my face breakout twice per week. Do I have to use a sun block. Please tell me which one and the type of soap to use to was my face.

AskDocWeb: We recommend using a mild soap but no more than two to three times a day. Medicated cosmetics, soaps, or other skin cleaners are not recommended. Avoid topical products containg alcohol, astringents, spices and lime because they may interfere with drug’s actions. Minimizing exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet rays during treatment unless you use a sun block. Your skin will sunburn very quickly.

Subj: Happy with Retin-A
Date: 6/24/2006
I have used retin-a for about 2 months. It is already smoothing my wrinkles and grainy texture. I am using .025 cream and I dilute it 50/50 with a moisturizer. This makes it spread more easily over the face. I even use it around my eyes in the diluted form. It causes a little bit of redness on my upper eyelids, but no big deal. I am happy with it so far.

Subj: Skin peeling off
Date: 6/30/2006
I was using retin a for 1 week. My pimples were gone but the red scars were there as it is and by the use of retin a the areas where I applied it became red and my skin started to peel off. I just want to know that should I continue to use it and is peeling normal.

AskDocWeb: The peeling is normal (along with some redness and scaling) when first starting. If severe local irritation develops, stop the drug temporarily and notify your doctor. The dosage may have to be adjusted before application is resumed.

Subj: Finally clearing acne
Date: 7/2/2006
I have been using Retin A as part of the Obagi System. I was not getting good results while using the system and began just using the Retin A .1% alone. The results are much better. I used the Obagi for 3 months and had no reaction. The Retin A is finally clearing my acne when using it alone. Do the results peak after a period of time or continue to get better?

AskDocWeb: The results do peak after awhile and stabilize but you will like the results. Your makeup will go on much smoother.

Subj: Retin-A Micro with benzoyl peroxide?
Date: 7/2/2006
A week ago I visited a dermatologist for the first time for acne. He prescribed me several products to treat acne including Retin-A Micro 0.04% and Benziq Wash (benzoyl peroxide). After doing some research when I came back home, I found that it’s not recommended that you use these two products together since it may cause irritation. However, I use the Benziq Wash in the mornings and Retin-A Micro after washing with a gentle cleanser only at night. Is this a good idea? I don’t want the two to neutralize each other or cause unwanted side effects. Your advice would be appreciated.

AskDocWeb: Congratulations on figuring out the best way to use these two products together. Your method should work just fine.

Subj: Tiny scars?
Date: 7/4/2006
I’m using retin a cream on my face for acne scars. But I read that some people that use retin a get tiny scars from the cream after it peels have there been any studies about this. Is retin a safe?

AskDocWeb: Retin-a is safe and will reduce scarring. Those who run into problems are usually the ones who apply too much. A little goes a long way.

Subj: Retin A and the Liver
Date: 7/7/2006
I never had acne. At about age 48 I started to use Retin A Micro to maintain healthy skin, applying it at night 4-7 nights per week. I used Vitamin C during the day and B12 over it, both from SkinCeuticals, strongest strength purchased through my dermatologist. My skin’s quality went from good to great, so I maintained that regimen for about 7 years. I then took a blood test as part of a physical and one of my liver tests was way out of whack. Neither my GP nor a gastroenterologist were able to come up with a diagnosis. However, a cosmetologist mentioned that there is a relationship between Retin A and the liver, so I ceased use of it. My liver tests are now, once again, perfect.
