Subj: Feels like severe sunburn
Date: 5/17/2007
My skin feels like I have a severe sunburn and it is peeling alot. Should I wash my face with cetaphil like I have been doing or should I just use water, what kind of lotion can I use that won’t make it burn more. Can I uses a aloe plant leaf, oatmeal made into a paste, should I just leave it alone or should I keep using the rentin-a I am so confused on what to do with this tight sunburn feeling skin. If I continue to use this product will it benefit me or will it do me more harm then good. Thanks,
Jane
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you are going through the peeling phase which is normal with Retin-A. That should get better after the third week. Use a non-abrasive cleansing lotion with a moisturizer that has a sun screen in it. If you have been using Retin-A for more than three weeks and you still have the burning sensation, you may have to decrease it’s use by every other day or every third day to see if that alleviates the problem.
Subj: Acne is worse
Date: 5/17/2007
I have been using retin a for 5 weeks now and my acne is worse but I’m wondering if I should keep using it to see the results. I really need a feedback cause I don’t know what to do and what to try anymore. Thank you,
Lili
AskDocWeb: After five weeks your skin should have shown improvement by now. It may be time to revisit your dermatologist to find out what you need to do.
Subj: Great results
Date: 5/18/2007
Hi, I am 49 years old and a cosmetician the other day thought I was only 38 or 40 years, and that was on a bad day for me as I had a really bad sinus infection and looked like crap. It was the condition my skin was in that she thought I was under 40 or close to it. And I smoke too. I have Spanish and native blood as well as Irish, Norwegian Indian from Mexico. I live in a harsh dry cold environment and have never suntanned. I have been mistaken for my 25 year old daughter’s sister-she has no sisters! I have been using retin a off and on since I was around 25-26 for a hormonal breakout. I use a very tiny amount about one tenth the size of a pea. And I mix it with another of my favorite non-anti-aging cream and put it on with wet fingers, careful as to not stretch or pull on my skin. And that one tenth of pea size is also rubbed on my neck as well. I only do this about twice a week as my skin peels very lightly. And sometimes I do the above and then I wipe most of it off and just leave a residue on and cover it up with a good moisturizer. I will get milder peeling but not enough to drive me crazy. DO NOT MIX Retin A with any Alpha Hydroxy Acids, you will BURN your skin terribly. Best of Luck.

Subj: Plans to get pregnant
Date: 5/20/2007
I really like this product, but I am concerned about the high dosage of vitamin-A and pregnancy. I know it’s bad to use this during pregnancy, but is it as Accutane, where it could cause severe birth defects? If one plans to get pregnant, about how long would she have to wait to stop using Retin-A before she can get pregnant?
Grace
AskDocWeb: Retin-A is not as bad as Accutane with regard to causing birth defects but to error on the side of safety we would stop taking it before trying to become pregnant. A healthy baby is better than having good skin. It’s a pregnancy category C drug.
Subj: Long term use of Retin-a
Date: 5/20/2007
I was told by a facialist recently that long term use of Retin-a causes worse wrinkling in the end, makes the skin too thin, finally it breaks down entirely. Also the retinoids that get into circulation in your body are somehow damaging. Any truth to this? I’ve been using it for six months and love the effects.
Monica
AskDocWeb: It sounds like they were describing abuse rather than use. With Retin-A more is not better, a small amount is all you need. We’ve heard from women who have used it many years and still love it.
Subj: Peeling and burning
Date: 5/22/2007
I have just starting using Renova to combat aging, but am finding that some areas are now peeling. The moisturiser that I am using is also burning those areas now. Can you recommend a moisturiser that works well in conjunction with Renova?
Phillipa
AskDocWeb: The burning is probably caused by the perfume in your moisturizer. Either that or you aren’t waiting long enough before applying the moisturizer. Use a natural type moisturizer without perfumes but one that does have sunscreen.
Subj: Tiny little whiteheads
Date: 5/24/2007
I just started using Retin-A about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I know it’s supposed to get worse before it gets better, but my face is now covered with a TON of tiny little whiteheads – are these blisters/hives or just part of the “purge” process?
Elizabeth
AskDocWeb: It’s difficult to say without actually seeing. We suggest you see a dermatologist.
Subj: Retin-A around the eye area?
Date: 5/26/2007
Can Retin-A be safely used around the eye area as that is where the “crows” live.
Debbie
AskDocWeb: It cannot be used around the eyes, because if your eyes were to water and you rubbed your eye, the Retin-A could get into them.
Subj: Fade cream
Date: 5/26/2007
Hello guys, my name is Elias. My face gets really red because of Killgman’s cream. I have been using this cream for about four months. The reason why I use this cream is because I had brown spots on my cheeks. Although the brown spots go away the red thing’s getting worse. I don’t want to stop using the cream because if I stop the cream the brown thing will come back again. My face still gets red please help me out to get rid of the red things? Is there any medicine to remove it? Please let me know if you know any thing about the medicine?
Elias
AskDocWeb: There are other products out there that accomplish the same thing. If you do not stop using the cream the redness is likely to only become worse and it isn’t worth it. Try Skin Success fade cream, the brown spots will not come back.
Subj: Down syndrome
Date: 5/28/2007
I read there have been studies that show a link between high levels of Vitamin A and Down syndrome. Could using Retin A cream on my face do damage to my eggs and possibly increase my chances of having a child with Down syndrome? Thank you.
Elizabeth
AskDocWeb: There is no evidence to suggest that it could damage your eggs but, according to the National Down syndrome Congress, “Vitamin A in excess can cause neurologic and dermatologic abnormalities.” This refers to the use of Vitamin A supplements by the expectant mother. Your thyroid produces a hormone that binds the vitamin A you get from food in your blood until it is needed somewhere in your body. A problem occurs if you have a thyroid deficiency and take extra vitamin A in the form of supplements. Since your body can’t process the vitamin A you get a toxic overdose. The symptoms of overdosing on vitamin A are headache, skin rashes, irritability, and itchiness. This can be avoided with thyroid replacement therapy but you have to be aware of the problem first. Make sure your thyroid is in good health before taking vitamin A. Expectant mothers and people with kidney disorders should not take vitamin A or beta-carotene supplements unless directed by a medical doctor.
Subj: Severe burning, irritation, large red capillaries
Date: 5/28/2007
Don’t go near Retin A cream! Used retin a cream for two weeks in 2005, caused severe burning, irritation, large red capillaries all over face from hairline to jaw. Has also caused extreme sensitivity. If I use shampoo or hair conditioner, or moisturizer on my face causes what looks like chemical burns. Have just been to doctor again for treatment after skin peeled off my face after using new moisturizer. When temperature rises above 22 degrees centigrade my face burns all over again. Retin a cream is making my life a misery.
Molly
AskDocWeb: Not everyone can use Retin-A, but for some it’s a wonderful thing.
Subj: Retin-A on chest and back?
Date: 5/29/2007
I have a question about Retin A, can you use Retin A on your chest and back.
Raul
AskDocWeb: No, it’s not meant for those areas.
Subj: Speed up the process?
Date: 5/30/2007
I am on the Obagi Nu-Derm system. I have been using this product for 4 years. In 2004, I had the blue peel with wonderful results. Retin-A is part of the routine with Obagi. I was recently told by another Obagi user, that increasing the use of Retin-A to morning in addition to evening speeds up the process. When I asked the product-dispensing doctor about it, he said the effect may cause more peeling but not speed up the renewal process because Retin-A works best when the user is asleep. Please advise. Thanks… The reason I want to speed things up is that I was forced to take a 2.5 week break and I am hoping to catch up and not have to be on the product daily during the hot summer months.
Diana
AskDocWeb: It would be a mistake to look for fast results with this drug. Please use it only as directed. Doubling up would not only increase the peeling but also the chances of side effects.
Subj: Nasolabial lines
Date: 5/30/2007
I started using retin a 0.05 for some nasolabial lines around my mouth (and its working very well!) and as a preventative measure, put some just below my eyes, sort of on my cheekbones. And now, I have wrinkles under my eyes where I didn’t before! It’s been about 2 weeks and I’m persevering, will these go away with continued use? and will they go away if I stop using it (or are they there for good – help!).
Emma
AskDocWeb: Only a dermatologist would be able to tell you that, after they examined your skin for type and condition. (Nasolabial lines are the creases and or hollows that run from the nose to the corner of the mouth)
Subj: Retin-a
Date: 6/3/2007
How long should you use retin-a for.
Claire
AskDocWeb: As long as you want.
Subj: Retin-A on eyelids?
Date: 6/4/2007
I have been using retin-a gel 0.025 2-3 times a week for lines and wrinkles for two months, my skin seems to be always red when I remove my makeup and pores seem large, is this normal? Can retin-a be used on the eyelids and under the eye? Thanks
Tara
AskDocWeb: The directions say that it should be kept away from the eyes, the mouth, paranasal creases of the nose, and mucous membranes. It sounds like either you are applying too much with each application or your skin is not responding well and may have to discontinue use.
