Subj: Face looks great
Date: 1/10/2008
At the age of 16 I started to have an acne. I’ve been using a lot of topical medication but it only suppress temporarily, a friend of mine recommended Retin-A. I don’t have any hesitation because it really have a great improvement on her face. I started to use Retin-A for the first 2 weeks I noticed that my face got worst lots of breakouts, peeling, and dryness but it’s indicated in the leaflets that it’s normal reaction of the skin. Now I’ve been using Retin-A for a year and my face look great, when they ask my age and I said I’m 31 they usually don’t believe because they said that I look at my 20’s its very flattering for me. Thanks for Retin-A.

Subj: Good moisturizer to use
Date: 1/12/2008
Hey….I have been using retin-a for 2 months and my face has kind of cleared up…..but its starting to look really dry, maybe because I don’t use a moisturizer the reason being that once I start using a moisturizer pimples start popping out. So what’s a good moisturizer to use that will not cause acne?
Yas
AskDocWeb: Which moisturizer you pick would depend on your skin type.
Subj: Blackheads on nose
Date: 1/12/2008
I used retin-a about a year ago for about a month and it just got worse so I stopped. I’m trying to use it again and I have a lot of blackheads on my nose, the skin is very flakly there so does this mean that the pores are opening up to get them out?
Ron
AskDocWeb: No, your skin is just peeling. Please read the pamphlet that came with the Retin-A. It will tell you all about the different stages your skin will go through over a period of time and what to do, and not do, to your skin.
Subj: Retin-A for wrinkles and scars?
Date: 1/13/2008
Will a dermatologist prescribe Retin-A for someone looking to reduce wrinkles and scars on the face? Please send reply. Thank you.
Doug
AskDocWeb: Some do and some don’t, using Retin-A to reduce wrinkles and scars is an off-label use that is not approved of by the FDA.
Subj: Good moisturizer?
Date: 1/13/2008
I am on retin-a micro .04 and have had good results it. My blackheads and my acne have started to go away with only 4 weeks of use. Can you recommend a good moisturizer? I have tried 7 different kinds and I can not seem to find one I like. Thanks,
Megan
AskDocWeb: Many pharmacists believe LifeCell is the best moisturizer in the world because it can penetrate through 20 skin cell layers. Have you tried that?
Subj: Moisturizer with self tan?
Date: 1/17/2008
I use 0.5% retin a cream, I protect with spf20 but I have also been using a moisturizer with a hint of self tan is that ok to use while using retin a thank you.
Debbie
AskDocWeb: If you have been using the Retin-A long enough for your skin to become adjusted to it then you should be okay.
Subj: Eyebrow waxed
Date: 1/18/2008
Hi! I’ve been using the lowest dose of Retin A to clear up some adult acne on my forehead and I had some freckles from birth control pills on my cheek bones. I’ve used the product for a couple of months and it’s perfect! The low dose doesn’t cause flaky skin nor any irritations and the results have been beautiful! Now for my question. I just had my eyebrow waxed (yes, just one) and my girl calmly said, “your skin came off” ~ I look like a boxer with no skin beneath my right brow. Is there something I can do to speed the healing process? It burns like a bad chemical burn. Thanks for your help!
Lauren
AskDocWeb: Cleansing it with a mild soap and water will help, as will using a triple antibiotic ointment on that area after cleansing.
Subj: 2 questions
Date: 1/18/2008
Hello, I absolutely love Retin-A micro 0.1%. I have been using it for many years and my skin is even and clear. I have 2 questions: 1) is it safe to use Retin-A long term? 2) If I use a moisturizer 2 hours after applying Retin-A micro (because my skin gets dry in the harsh winter months) will it make the Retin-A ineffective? Thanks.
Magalie
AskDocWeb: Yes many women use it long term. Using a moisturizer will not make the Retin-A ineffective.
Subj: Ant bite aggravated by the sun
Date: 1/19/2008
In the past, I have intermittently had long-lasting lesions on my nose and face that were impossible to get rid of, or which re-flared when I thought they were going away. I finally got rid of them for good with a formula I devised: after my shower, hit them with ordinary iodine, and then, about 2-3 hours later at bedtime, anoint them with a small amount of Retin-A (0.1%). It would get rid of them in about four days, no recurrence! I believe they were some kind of pre-cancerous lesion (such as the dermatologist has frozen off my face before.) Today, I have a keratoacanthoma on the top of my foot. It is hideous, about the size of a dime. It seems to have come from an ant bite aggravated by the sun (I live in FL and wear sandals daily.) Do you have any knowledge of the above formula working on this type of palpule? (I’m going to try it anyway! I want to try (to) reduce it before going for surgical removal.)

Subj: Worked wonders on clearing my skin
Date: 1/21/2008
I’ve been using Retin-A (generic 0.01% gel form… I purchased in Mexico for $15 due to no insurance, and due to the whopping $100 price tag for the generic in the states) for quite a few years now. I started using the product after developing moderate acne in my late teens (and early twenties). It has worked wonders on clearing my skin (my acne has cleared, my pores are tighter, and breakouts are rare). It has even helped to clear a rather deep scar I (once) had on my forehead. Retin-A is a great product (if used correctly… and its very hard to use this stuff incorrectly). It says to use at night. Well, I’ve often used it during the day (as well) with no problems. Upon initial use to the product my face was a little sensitive, it peeled at times, and it was a little red… But, having talked with my doctor (who explained that these side effects were all a part of the initial process) I was given some moisturizers (AVEENO non-pore clogging lotions… and sun-protection creams) that compliment the use/ and lessen the side effects of the of the retin-A.

Subj: Uneven complexion
Date: 1/21/2008
I am black and I was prescribed RetinA and what it gave my was awful blotchy skin. It turned some parts of my face darker, other parts lighter while my chin and forehead remained the same. It however helped my mild case of acne, but it was not worth the uneven complexion it caused.

Subj: Redness is unbearable
Date: 1/21/2008
I’ve used retin-a for about 3 months now for acne around my chin area. I hate the redness, it’s unbearable…is there anything at all I can do? I moisturize every day with cetaphil. Any type of mask that will work?
Jeff
AskDocWeb: Masks may be too harsh for your skin. Some people have found it helpful to reduce the amount of retin-a applied and/or cutting back to every other day usage to reduce redness.
Subj: Retin-A under eyes?
Date: 1/22/2008
I’ve been using retin-A for about 9 years, I love it. But I have avoided using it under eyes. I want to know what the research says about using in that area. It’s worked so well around the face, why not under eyes? Please advise
Shar
AskDocWeb: The skin beneath the eyes seems to be too sensitive and does not respond well to using Retin-A in that area.
Subj: Face is extremely flaky
Date: 1/23/2008
Hi, I just got this medicine and my face is extremely flakey and the acne marks that I originally have are getting darker!! And my skin is very sensitive since it’s so dry. I put on some moisturizer and let my face rest tonight is that good? And what bout the dark marks!
Cheryl
AskDocWeb: Giving your skin a chance to rest and recover is a good idea. The dark spots should fade with time.
Subj: Fibrous Dysplasis
Date: 1/30/2008
Does Retin A have ANY affect on the bones? My son has Fibrous Dysplasis and can not take any medication that will affect his bones.
Donna
AskDocWeb: There are drugs that can cause bone marrow depression but Retin-A is not one of them.
Subj: Strength of SPF sunscreen?
Date: 1/31/2008
Hi, I was wondering if I could use accutane while applying retin-a every night or every other night without me breaking out any worse. Also, could you tell me a good strength of spf sunscreen to use with these products since I will be in the sun pretty often. Thanks!
Sheena
AskDocWeb: Use the highest SPF that you can find, at least 15 but higher is better. Something with UVA and UVB protection would provide maximum protection.
Subj: Itching all over my scalp
Date: 1/31/2008
I have only been using Retin A about 10 days. About 3 days after the first use, I developed a moderate itching all over in my scalp. It is so weird!, I have NEVER had scalp problems in my life. Is there any way that the two could be connected? I am NOT putting it in my hair ;). Thanks,
Paula
AskDocWeb: It is possible, itching has been noted as one possible side effect but when that happens it is usually confined to the area where Retin-A is applied.
Subj: Started using retin a 0.05%
Date: 1/31/2008
I have started using retin a 0.05% under my eyes for wrinkles. The appearance of wrinkles has increase along with a stinging sensation is this temporary and is continued use going to be effective?
Jean
AskDocWeb: During the early weeks of use, a worsening of the condition may occur due to the action of Retin-A on deep, previously unseen areas of inflammation. This is temporary and should clear up by week 6 or 7.
Subj: How often to use Retin-A?
Date: 2/1/2008
Retina a who many times a week do u use retina a? My derm said a odd/even day but can I do it twice in a row anyways?
Daniel
AskDocWeb: If your dermatologist advises you to use it every other day then that is what you should do. Using it more often may cause some pretty unpleasant skin irritation.
Subj: Wrinkle prevention?
Date: 2/3/2008
Hello. I am a 35 year old male who has been using retin-a, to a certain extent, since my early 20s. In my 20s, it was primarily for acne use and it did wonders for me. Since, I still use it for the anti-acne benefits, but also for wrinkle prevention. It seems that the .05% strength has worked best for me. I’ve used the .1% and almost always seem to suffer skin reddening/irritation. I have a question about usage frequency. When I used it for acne, I applied it daily and that seemed to work well. Presently, I apply it 2-3 days/week. Would there be any drawback to going back to daily use (with the.05%) even though it would be more for wrinkle prevention?
Alex
AskDocWeb: The only drawback we can think of is the obvious one, the cost of the product.
