Subj: Using Retin A under eyes
I am using Retin A cream under my eyes to help the wrinkles lessen — has anyone tried this, and if so, what are the results? Is it safe?
AskDocWeb: The directions say to keep it away from your eyes, mouth, nose, and mucous membranes.
Subj: Retin-A and yeast infections?
I read acne antibiotics can cause yeast infections. Could this be a side effect with Retin-A? I’m 65.
AskDocWeb: No, Retin-A does not cause yeast infections and is not used in that area.
Subj: Red on my cheeks
Well I’m 16 years old, I’ve been using Retin-A for about a year now. And I’ve seen some difference, but my face is really red on my cheeks all the time. Will it go away if I stop using it? And will Retin-A get rid of scars over time?
AskDocWeb: The redness will probably go away after a period of time once you stop. As far as scars go, it depends on how bad they are, if they are small it may take care of them.
Subj: Numb nose
I have been using the Retin-A cream for about a month now. About 3 days ago I noticed that I was having a funny sensation on either side of my nose. Now it feels numb and is very irritating. It seems to be getting worse. Could this be from the cream?
AskDocWeb: It might do that if you are using it on your nose. That’s why the directions say to keep it away from your nose.
Subj: Around mouth and eyes
Retin a Micro 0.1 % in the morning CMP SAL ACID/RA LOT LOT at night. Why do they say you can not use it around your mouth and eyes? How far from your eyes and mouth is a safe area to apply medicine? I have been using it on my lower face due to adult acne and I have also used it around my upper lip area. I also have frown lines in between my eyes, but don’t use it there either.
AskDocWeb: If you get it into or too close to the mucous membranes it may cause irritation and inflammation.
Subj: Using Retin_A for 20 years
I have been using Retin_A gel 1% (0.01%) for 20 years. Of course, I stay out of the sun since the gel removes the outer protective dead skin layers. Though I am nearly 54, most people place me in my 30’s. I wear no make-up as there are no brown spots or wrinkles to cover. Without the dead cells, my skin has a pinkish tone, which is unusual for an oriental especially of my age. My only difficulty was in the first few weeks when my skin was somewhat shocked by the gel’s drying effects but that was temporary. Also, I follow the application instructions above. However, I do have a couple of friends who have had serious reactions to the drug in the form of ballooning of the face and much greater eruption of the acne. No two people are alike.
Subj: Making my skin peel
I’m using Retin-A right now, it is making my skin peel. But I’m going to keep using it.
Subj: I stopped all treatment
I was prescribed Retin A for rhinophyma, a complication of Roscea. After ten days, I think this is the wrong thing to do. My condition is worse, and my nose is like leather. I stopped all treatment until I see my physician again. In the literature it specifically says, keep away from the “wings of the nose.” I’m really afraid now this aggravated condition might be permanent. It is bad enough as it is. After discontinuing Retin A for 5 days, I don’t see any clearing up yet.
Subj: A lot of improvement
I have been using retin-a for about 6 months and have seen a lot of improvement. I still break out a little around the time of my period each month, but not nearly as bad as it used to be. I have very oily skin so the dryness is actually a good thing for me. I do have to use a moisturizer daily now, and after reading everyone’s comments here I will definitely start using a moisturizer with sunscreen. Do you recommend a certain SPF level?
Lastly, I just started a laser hair removal treatment on my upper lip. I’ve gone through 2 treatments, with great results and no side effects. The owner of the salon assured me that it was safe to use retin-a and still receive the laser treatment, he just recommended I not use the retin-a the day before and after, as it would make my skin more sensitive. Has anyone else had an experience with this combination? Thanks for the feedback.
AskDocWeb: In the patient insert it says to use a sunscreen with SPF level of at least 15. If you are going to be out in the sun for extended periods of time then use the highest SPF level you can find.
Subj: Green Peel?
I have been using Retin -A for about 3 weeks and I know that I am supposed to wait for the skin to change etc but I have found my skin already going blotchy and the redness and irritation, peeling are all just too much discomfort. When I do my walking and I sweat the sweat on my face stings. I have been looking into IPL treatment for capillaries and pigmentation also the “Green Peel” treatment developed by Dr Schrammek. I am wondering if any one has looked into these alternative treatments and if so what are their comments. Thank you.
Subj: Going on a cruise
I’ve being using retin-A .1% since 2001 for cosmetics reasons. My 17 years old daughter is using it now for her acne. My question is that we are going on a cruise in two months and I wonder if we should stop using the retin-A before the trip and when. I already have sunscreen with Zinc and I’m going to buy sun hats, but I want to make sure that we are going to be fine. Thank you in advance for your help.
AskDocWeb: Discontinuing use while on vacation may be a good idea for you. Your daughter may want to continue use to avoid, as much as possible, any problems with acne. As long as you remember the sunscreen and hats you should be fine, enjoy yourself.
Subj: Prickly feeling
I have been using tretinion for two years now. I get compliments every day of my life. I was wondering if prolonged use could hurt my skin. My face sometimes gets really red and a prickly feeling. It only lasts about 5 minutes. Can tell if it is a hot flash or using the cream. I am a 42 female.
AskDocWeb: Since it only lasts about 5 minutes, that sounds like a hot flash.
Subj: Skin sensitivity
Hi just wondering if longterm use of Retin A cause skin sensitivity. I’ve been using Retin A for about 25 years and notice I now have allergic skin reactions to certain products like certain sunblocks and mineral makeup. Thanks!
AskDocWeb: We have seen no evidence that Retin-A has any influence on allergic reactions one way or the other.
Subj: Bloodshot eyes
Since I started using Tretinoin, I have noticed that I cannot wear my contacts without getting very bloodshot eyes, My eyes also have been very dry and itchy. Is there a connection? I use it almost every night, taking a one or two day break now and again. My skin has been wonderful with no complaints about its effectiveness, but I do have questions about its side effects.
AskDocWeb: Make sure you are not putting the Tretinoin anywhere near your eyes, nose or mouth. You might discontinue for a few days and see how your eyes are doing. Remember that the manufacturer recommends you discontinue use if you have any sensitivities to this medication.
Subj: Birth defects?
I was told that Retin-A-Icro is associated with birth defects if you become pregnant while taking it or if you use it while you are pregnant. Are there any such defects associated with this form of application? How high is the % to have a baby with birth defects in a case like this?
AskDocWeb: Several studies of Retin-A on pregnancy have shown no increase in birth defects above the normal rate.
Subj: Retin-A and Glycolic formulation
I use retin A 0.025% at night and glycolic formulation in the morning…but doesn’t seem much improvement on my acne skin…it has been about 2weeks.. is it a good combination? what is ur suggestion?
AskDocWeb: Retin-A offers improved skin pigmentation when used in a very specific physician supervised program with a glycolic formulation but more than 6 or 7 weeks of treatment may be needed before consistent beneficial effects appear.
Subj: Acne scars and wrinkles are much better
I use .1 concentration at night, and after my shower in the morning I rub my skin hard with a rough towel to exfoliate. Yes, I do occasionally get redness and peeling, but afterwards my acne scars and wrinkles are much better, and my skin has never looked more luminous. During the day I use foundation with moisturizers and sunblock.
Subj: Pus filled bumps
I was using retin-a for about a month and a half. I have never had anything wrong with my scalp in my life. I’ve done nothing different but start using retin-a my scalp has developed little pus filled bumps around my hair shafts. I’ve actually pulled some of them out and they have two hairs connected to one bulb. Is this normal? I don’t think it is, is it from retin-a? I have quit using it for now.
AskDocWeb: No, it is not normal, nor does not sound like something caused by Retin-A. Please have a dermatologist check this out and let us know how you come out.
I have been using Retin A for just about 5 weeks. I have seen no decrease in my fine lines (crows feet). How long does it take to start seeing results. I am using 0.1%. Would Retin A cause wrinkles? Funny, I only have fine lines (crows feet) on one side of my face the other is wrinkle free.
AskDocWeb: More than 6 or 7 weeks of treatment may be needed before consistent beneficial effects appear.
Subj: Cream and gel
I just started using Retin-A gel recently to help with wrinkles. I haven’t had any problems as of yet. I was wondering what is the difference between the cream and the gel? Is one better than the other? Also, what is Retin-A micro? Is this better than just the regular Retin-A?
AskDocWeb: The cream is a little softer than the gel and the gel is more concentrated. The difference appears to be a matter of your personal preference. Retin-A micro is a brand name of Retin-A.
Subj: Waxing and pigmentation problem
I have been trying to use Retin-A for longer than a month, but normally every 2-3 weeks, I get my eyebrows waxed. I do not put the gel on every night and I make sure not to put the gel too close to my eyes/eyebrows. However, every time parts of my skin peel off and is very painful and red. – Is there any thing I can do about this? Or will I have to give up one or the other?
Also, I have a loss of pigmentation from the corners of my nose to my chin that looks like a big white circle. When my cheeks get red, this usually stays much lighter and it looks so bad! I have had this all my life. Will Retin-A help this? Thanks so much for your help!
AskDocWeb: Every report from those who tried waxing while using Retin-A say that it is a painful mistake. You will have to decide which one is more important. to find out about the pigmentation problem, you will have to consult with a dermatologist.
