Subj: I’m pregnant
Date: 6/15/2008
I just found out I’m pregnant, and I’ve been using Retin-A Micro. I was told by my MD (before I was pregnant) that using Retin-A and being pregnant, you can have a deformed baby. I did stop using it, but I am so scared. Will the baby be ok??? Please help. I’m so scared.

Toni

AskDocWeb: Several studies of Retin-A on pregnancy have shown no increase in birth defects above the normal rate so there is a good chance that you and your baby will be just fine.

Subj: Face wash?
Date: 6/16/2008
Would using any type of face wash mess/wash away the Retin-A I have applied on previously?

Timothy.

AskDocWeb: If you wait about 20 minutes, the Retin-A will be absorbed into the skin and can’t be washed away.

Subj: Flaking skin around mouth
Date: 6/17/2008
I have been using Retin A for 16 years and am now in my 60s. I have very little wrinkling which I attribute to the use of Retin A. My question is that the last year or so I am experiencing flaking of my skin around my mouth. Is this from the Retin A and why would it start 14 years after I began using it.

Jan

AskDocWeb: It is not likely, any side effects would have shown up long before now. You would have to check with a dermatologist to be sure but it may have something to do with the natural changes in your skin as you age.

Subj: A huge difference
Date: 7/1/2008
My Dr. prescribed Retin-A Cream 1.percent to help me with my aging shin, although my Dr says I have the shin of a 50 year old (I am 66 years old). I only have a few forehead lines and limited crows feet, and mouth lines, and very little check below the chin line. I have been using this cream for two weeks and I can see and feel a hudge difference. I did experience redness, stinging and itching the first 4 days until my skin adjusted to this chemical. I did cut in half the amount of cream.

I use this cream every morning after showering. I clean my face with lard and rinse well then use a cool water rinse. I let my skin dry for about 5-6 mins. then I use this cream, followed with a Mary Kay mosturizer and then 45% sunblock then my Mary Kay Foundation. This is my daily rutine for this product and it is working VERY WELL for me. When I saw the red spots and the peeling I just kept going using less cream and a little more mosturizer. This has worked for me I hope it works for you. My Twin sister has had 3 fase lifts and already my skin looks better than hers does. This product does work you just need to adjust the % and or the amount to fit your skin. God Bless you all and your efforts!

Subj: This product works
Date: 7/6/2008
I am 52 and have been using Retin A since I was 26. This product works and there is no doubt about that. I am never taken to be any older than 45 and usually less. I put a small amount say, the size of a pea and add sorbolene cream to that, mixing it all in. The amount of sorbolene I use is about the size of a twenty cent coin. Never fail to use sunscreen, not even on a cloudy day. Your tube of Retin A should last about 4 to 6 months, if you are going through it sooner than that, then you are using too much. Stick with this cream because I guarantee that within two months you will see a huge difference. When you stop using this cream, your skin will gradually deteriorate.

I tried this out on my left hand using the cream only on that hand within a month, the wrinkly look went away. When I stopped, the aged and wrinkly look came back within two or three weeks. I hope this bit of info is useful to all of you. All the best…

Subj: Impressed with Retin A gel
Date: 7/8/2008
Hi, I am using Retin A from four days and it gives me very good effect. Because I have very oily and acne skin, it feels it is soothing me. I am so much impresses with Retin A gel and I started to use on my oily scalp(hair). And it also give me good result. IS it ok if I use it in my hair. And I am use retin A gel two time morning and night and I am using E45 cream as a moisturiser. Can I go with this routine? Thanks,

Saima

AskDocWeb: The directions we have say to apply it once a day but follow your doctor’s instructions.

Subj: Retin A cream
Date: 7/11/2008
I just started using Retin A .05% cream for both for recent acne flares (never had before) but also for brown/age spots and fine wrinkles (I had had experience with Renova years ago (no longer produced or distributed where I live). I am tolerating the Retin A, but barely (it’s been 3 weeks), and I’m wondering if I should switch to the micro gel formulation – is it equally effective or should I just stick this out. (I switched to cetaphil cleanser and an ROC moisturizer for skin being treated.

I am also wondering what strength I should use for the photoaging aspects (spots and wrinkles). If I can tolerate a higher dose, will that be better. And, if I am tolerating .05% of Retin A but switch to the micro formulation, which dose should I use if there’s a chance it’s ‘less effective’ (could you clarify this part too – thank you) Thanks for your help.

P.s. I also never had any redness, stinging, or burning with Renova – in fact, I used alpha hydroxy acids simultaneously with no adverse effect. Retin A is FAR STRONGER and I can honestly say that changing from a bar soap to cetaphil and using strong moisturizers and finally settling on the ROC and/or Cetaphil facila moisturizer (good too) helped a LOT.

Subj: Retin-A results
Date: 7/11/2008
Wow, I am reading this and just really amazed at all the different opinions from the people and experts. It was a guy who said it takes a few months to see results, maybe alot of people are using the knock-off brand. I seen results within 3 days, and now 2wks later my skin is completely clear. Which I have had bad skin all my life. I wore makeup, alot of it to hide the imperfections.

I started using retin-a 2 weeks ago because I had brown spots left from picking acne on my face. My pores also was becoming more visual. My skin didn’t look smooth. The first week my skin started to peel, not bad but it did peel. Certain areas after apply the cream it would burn, well just tingle a little bit. Then that went away. Within a few days(meaning around 3) I stared to see alot of the brown spots fade. After every face wash I noticed my skin looking brighter and clearer. I use the product everyday.
Here it is 2wks later, and I wake up this morning, and my husband swears I’m wearing makeup. The reason was because my skin is completely clear and smooth. The only problem I have is retin-a is a bleaching cream also, and I am a brownskin black American. So it has made me lighter. But that’s ok because I can use a bronzer on my face. But the results are unbelievable. Again, I do use it everyday. When my skin would pill, I would use coco butter lotion. But I continued to use it on a daily bases.
Also because it is a bleaching cream also, you have to use it on the whole face and not just problem areas, because if you do just use it ion problem areas then your face will be light and lighter, or dark and light. That’s what you don’t want. BTW, I am using the HIGHEST DOSAGE WHICH IS 2% I went to a plastic surgeon for microdermabrasion, but she suggested retin-a first.

Subj: 30 years of Retin A
Date: 7/12/2008
My Mom started using Retin A 30 years ago. She is now 60 and she looks fabulous! Her doctor advised her to mix the Retin A with vaseline and then apply. That REALLY helps with the flakiness and irritation. One thing that she did wrong was she applied too much ointment on her lip over 5 years ago. She got a burn that has never healed. Even so, she uses it religiously. I am 34 and EVERYWHERE WE GO PEOPLE THINK WE ARE SISTERS! Ugh. I don’t use it bc I never wanted to go through that 3 week peeling period…I was always dating or being social. Now I wish I would have started years ago.

Subj: Sensitive areas
Date: 7/13/2008
I understand that it’s good to keep retin A away from eyes and mouth because these areas are sensitive. But would it be less likely to cause problems to use Retin A on these areas periodically? For instance, maybe once a week and still gain some benefit to these sensitive areas of the face?

Tony

AskDocWeb: You have to weigh the risks and benefits when deciding something like that. Keep in mind that there are good reasons for the manufacturer to warn against using it in those areas.

Subj: Severe reaction
Date: 7/13/2008
I started using Retin A and Obagi Skin blender for 9 days and then I had a severe reaction to it. It has been two weeks since I stopped and redness is still there, will it go away? I also have darked spots

Sandy

AskDocWeb: Mixing Retin A with other products is not recommended unless you talk to your doctor about it first. You will have to see your doctor anyway to find out the extent of the skin damage and what to do about it.

Subj: My skin has never looked better
Date: 7/14/2008
I used accutane 2 years ago and when I was finished my dermatalogist put me on retin-a to maintain a healthy complexion and prevent heavy breakouts. I now use it 2-3 times a week (strongest one) and my skin has never looked better. I did peel and get flakey for a couple of months but I wear sunscreen the next morning after applying and washing it off and it is my natural exfoliator/ staying young secret 🙂

Subj: Used Retin A Micro around eyes
Date: 7/14/2008
I have used Retin A Micro around my eyes, very sparingly and I have not encountered any problems or adverse effects. No dryness, or crustiness of skin….works perfectly fine around the delicate eye area for me. I am 39 and I can tell you strangers have never guessed my age over 27! I will continue to use this product in the coming years…have been for awhile now!

Subj: Peeling and improvement
Date: 7/17/2008
I have been using Retin A as part of Obagi program for 4 weeks now. I had very minor tightness in first two weeks and very minor flaking (not peeling). Does this mean it is not working for me? Do you need major peeling to see improvement?

Kim

AskDocWeb: No, major peeling is not required for improvement. Some get away with just a minimal amount of redness.

Subj: Flaky dry skin
Date: 7/18/2008
I used the liquid for the first time last night and woke up this morning with flaky dry skin around my chin area. Is this normal after the first use?

Ellen

AskDocWeb: You can expect a lot more of the same as this is one of the first signs that it is working and your skin adjusting to the drug. Remember to use a moisturizer.

Subj: Under your eyes
Date: 7/18/2008
For those of you who have used Retin-A under your eyes and feel it is too irratating, try Renova in the cream form. It helps to smooth the lines and make the skin smoother. I have had great results using it underneath my eyes where the skin is thin and dry. The rest of my skin is very oily, so I don’t use Renova there. I use the Retin-A in gel form for the rest of my face.
