Subj: Dark brown blemishes
Date: 9/19/2008
I have some blemishes on my face due to acne. Should I use retin-a cream for fading them, say 0.025% retin-a? I have tried using it since the past 2-3 days, the skin peels, and the blemishes seem less darker, will this cream work for taking away the dark brown blemishes?

AskDocWeb: Retin-A does work for some blemishes but it depends on your skin type and normal skin color.

Subj: Face is peeling
Date: 9/20/2008
I have been using Retin-A .025% for 2 1/2 weeks now and I am noticing that my face is peeling, it’s dry and tight, but my concern is that I am starting to break out more around my chin. Is this normal since I haven’t been on Retin-A that long? I know that your skin will get worse before it gets better, but does it happen with everybody that is using this product for acne?

AskDocWeb: It happens enough to be common which is why a moisturizer is recommended.

Subj: The smell
Date: 9/21/2008
I have been using retin a with good results, but when I inhale the smell, it seems to affect me and it seems like my nose might get a bit hard and swollen.

Subj: Using Retin-A on the chest
Date: 9/23/2008
I am a 58 year old female who has used Retin-A on my face and neck off and on for over 20 years. Because I had such success in those locations, I decided to use it on my chest where I have sun damage, thin translucent patches, and some brown spots. I contracted a light macular rash which went away within several days after I discontinued using the cream. Recently, I tried it again on my chest. This time I did not get a rash on the upper parts of my chest, but in the triangle between my breasts I contracted a light macular itchy rash, which later started to burn, and then it became blister-like, burned all the more, and was extremely itchy. At one point I had a few pimple-like lesions (I do not have a propensity for acne). Since the rash has lasted over two weeks I am wondering if these lesions could be herpetic in nature. They almost have the appearance of small cold sores. Are there side effects of Retin-A which include herpes simplex?

AskDocWeb: No there isn’t but you might want to have a dermatologist check this out. It would also be an opportunity to discuss what you are doing and find out if Retin-A is the right product to help with that.

Subj: Why wait?
Date: 9/26/2008
Why do you have to wait 20-30 minutes after you wash your face to apply Retin-A?

AskDocWeb: If applied right after washing your face, less Retin-A would soak in because your skin would still be hydrated. You might compare your skin to a sponge, which would soak up more, a wet sponge or a dry one?

Subj: Under eyes
Date: 9/28/2008
Hi I have been using retin a, my therapist gave me 4 percent and told me to put it under my eyes, I have so many more lines now, I get botox, but everything has just changed over night.

Subj: Become more oily?
Date: 9/28/2008
I’ve used Retin-A for about a month now and ever since I’ve started using it (although it has really helped) my face has become much more oily? Is this a common side effect?

AskDocWeb: Although it is not listed as a side effect, several people have reported that their skin became more oily. A couple have noted that they obtained better results by switching to the gel because the cream made their skin very oily.

Subj: Used Retin a for over 25 years
Date: 9/30/2008
Hi, I have used Retin a for over 25 years and my skin looks great. I am almost 56 years old and no one can tell. I have no real wrinkles around my eyes or in places most people do…I use a strong sun screen but all people should use a strong block as sun is bad for skin anyway. I have flaking every so often but not too bad. It also keeps away brown spots which I am prone to. I would never stop using this great medicine.

Subj: Rascae and brown spot
Date: 10/1/2008
Retin-A 0.05% (tretinoin) is the one I am using I hope it helps clear up rascae and a brown spot on my face from the sun.

Subj: Allergy-Flu-like symptoms
Date: 10/7/2008
Retin-A has worked wonderfully on my skin, but I cannot use it, because the moment I do, I wake up with Allergy-Flu-like symptoms the next day…swollen throat, congestion, scratchy throat. When I hadn’t made the connection yet, I used it regularly for a couple of weeks, and completely lost my voice, was very ill, coughing, sneezing, and just really bad. I stopped using it for that time simply because to put anything on a face that is swollen, itchy, runny-nosed and sore isn’t fun, then I got better. When my health felt better, I started using it again, and oh, my GOSH, I got sick again. Well, just to make SURE, I let myself get all better, then, just last night, used a q-tip, and barely dabbed it on my spots, and Whammy…this morning, my eyes are swollen, my nose is congested, my throat is dry and scratchy. Amazing. Could it be that I am using it on my hands or around my eyes? Is it absorbed differently in these places? Can anyone recommend a great brown-spot treatment??

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may be giving yourself an overdose by using it on more than just your face. Remember that this is a medication intended to treat acne vulgaris on facial skin. Using it close to your eyes could also cause problems and is not recommended. For brown spots use a fade cream.

Subj: Result X
Date: 10/8/2008
I have been using Retin-A cream for 2years and I love it, I am 55years old. I have recently purchased products on net called Result X which contains AHA. Can you please tell me if I can use this product when using Retin A cream at the same time? Some where I had read that AHA zap the effect of Retin A cream. Is that true?

AskDocWeb: You’ll have to ask the customer service people at the company that makes Result X. Please consult with a dermatologist before using any other products with Retin-A. In general, that is not recommended.

Subj: More wrinkles than ever
Date: 10/10/2008
I have been using Retin A off and on for a few months. My skin looks aweful. I have more wrinkles than ever. Will this get better in time? My face is very tight and I moistorize morning and night. My face is shiny and looks like full of wrinkles. HELP!

AskDocWeb: Since you have been using it for months, something is not working right. It may be time to consult with a dermatologist for some expert instruction designed specifically for your skin.

Subj: Retin A micro usage
Date: 10/11/2008
Hi! I’ve been using retin a micro for 1 yr and 5 months but it has never really cleared my skin completely, I have mild to moderate acne and I’m 18. I even still peel, so I am thinking I may want to use it every other night. (like one day yes one day no) will that be a bad idea? I just want to know if I will break out from doing this?

AskDocWeb: We can’t compare previous usage to your suggested usage without knowing how often you were using it during the previous year. Was it daily, weekly or what?

Subj: Scaly lips
Date: 10/13/2008
I have been using retin-a, the topical pump treatment on my face in combination with solodyn(an oral supplement) and duac (another topical gel) for a few months now, and the combination has worked really well for relieving me of acne. However, for the last few weeks (almost a month) I have experienced scaly lips. They feel like they have a scab over them and they are pretty sensitive. They look normal, but it is a really bothersome feeling. I keep moisturizing them (constantly) but to no avail. I don’t understand what could be causing this because I don’t use the retin-a or the duac on my lips, just on my skin. Any feedback?

AskDocWeb: Have you considered the possibility that it may be caused by the moisturizer you are using? You might try a different one or leave off the moisturizer altogether for a week and find out if that makes a difference.

Subj: No more tan?
Date: 10/13/2008
I was prescibed Retin-A by my dermantologist but a friend of mine who had used this product before warned me that when I use Retin-A, my face will not tan anymore. (At least this is what happened to her when she used the product) Is this true? Also, I have some brown spots on my hands, can the Retin-A get rid of this?

AskDocWeb: The problem with tanning is that Retin-A increases the photosensitivity of the skin. Exposure to sunlight is more likely to burn your skin than it is to tan it. Retin A is used to reduce or eliminate liver spots, wrinkles, brown or gray growths and even precancerous lesions.

Subj: After discontinuing Retin A Micro
Date: 10/13/2008
Hi I’ve been using Retin a micro for 1yr and 6 months but I want to quit because my skin its so sensitive and I want to tan .. after I quit how much longer will it be so I can be able to tan and my skin can be thinker and all?

AskDocWeb: It may take four to six weeks before your skin can take the sun so go slowly in trying to get a tan.

Subj: Birth defect
Date: 10/13/2008
Retin-a should not be used by pregnant women. I used it for treatment of a wart which it did not remove (prescribed by my doctor) and my daughter was born with a heart defect.

AskDocWeb: If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, do not use Retin A.

Subj: Lines/deep wrinkles under eyes
Date: 10/14/2008
I have used Retin-A for 6 years now. I put it all over my face including under my eyes (pea-size amount on face at night). My face looks good, but I have many lines/deep wrinkles under my eyes. Is this due to the Retin-A? Can I repair it? I am only 38 years old. I look great with sunglasses.

AskDocWeb: There is very little data on what happens if Retin-A is applied under the eyes, just that using it there is not recommended. As for repair, it may be possible with plastic surgery but you might want to consult with a dermatologist first.

Subj: Applying Retin-A
Date: 10/14/2008
Can I use something emollient on dry skin areas AFTER I apply Retin-A? Something like rosehip oil? Or will this mess up the Retin-a? Can you layer anything after or before applying Retin-A? Why/why not?

AskDocWeb: The directions say to cleanse your skin 20 to 30 minutes before applying Retin-A. This prepares the skin and creates the best environment to allow the Retin-A to do its work. If there is a layer of something else on the skin when the you apply Retin-A, there is a possibility of a chemical reaction that may reduce the effectiveness of Retin-A and/or possibly even cause harm to your skin. Layering anything before applying Retin-A is not recommended. Not sure about how your skin would respond to the rosehip oil but there is no warning about applying makeup afterwards, as long as you allow 20 to 30 minutes for Retin-A to do its work.
