Subj: Rash on my neck
Date: 5/10/2009
I started using retin a about 2 weeks ago – on my face and neck. I noticed results in a week. I think my skin is smoother and pores smaller. In the last 2 days I have noticed a rash on my neck area, it’s red and hot and itches. I don’t know whether to continue just on my face and skip the neck or just keep going? What can I do to make the redness appear less red? How long will it take to fade if I stop using it in the neck area? My face has had no side effects apart from a little dry patches. Can I use a natural tea tree oil to help with the redness?
GB
AskDocWeb: The instructions clearly state that Retin-A is for the treatment of acne on the face. Using it anywhere else may cause problems. If you discontinue use on your neck most of the redness should be gone in a week or so.
Subj: Folds and crows feet
Date: 5/13/2009
I have folds and crows feet by my eyes. Will Retin-A help reduce (or remove) the folds, as well? I am 65 and just started using Tretinoin Cream 0.025% (Retin-A) for only 2 weeks now and will continue using until the recommended 6-8 weeks before I notice if this is effective or not. Your thoughts, please? Thank you.
C
AskDocWeb: Of the three women who reported using Retin-A on their crows feet, two said it had no affect and one said it made a huge difference. That is just not enough data to form an opinion.
Subj: Is that normal?
Date: 5/14/2009
I just started using Retin-A for sun-damaged, milia and fine lines, all under my eyes. I also use the oild of olay moisturizer both day and night concurrently. I’ve been doing this regimen for 3 weeks already and now the skin under where I put retin-A has become so dry and it singe. I stopped using retin-A for 4 days now and everytime I put on moisturizer it still burns. Is that normal?
Gerri
AskDocWeb: That does sound typical for those just starting use. What you describe is covered in the instructions where it says that your skin condition may get worse before it gets better. It does take some time for your skin to get used to the Retin-A and it does make your skin more sensitive, both to other chemicals and to sunlight.
Subj: Under eye wrinkles?
Date: 5/15/2009
I have been using retino A for 5 days…it’s little stingy but I am satisfied…my question is…can I use it on under eye wrinkles?
Swati
AskDocWeb: The directions say to keep it away from your eyes, mouth, nose, and mucous membranes. The skin beneath the eyes seems to be too sensitive and does not respond well to using Retin-A in that area.
Subj: My acne is getting worse
Date: 5/15/2009
I have been using retin A for the past two weeks and my acne is getting worse plus am getting black heads. How can you help, is the product not working for me?
Louisa
AskDocWeb: It is common for the acne to get worse before it gets better as previously unseen blemishes are brought to the surface. Fortunately this typically starts improving after week two so you should start noticing improvement from this point on.
Subj: Not sure where I should be putting what
Date: 5/16/2009
Hi my doctor prescribed for me Duac gel, tri luma cream for melasma and retin a micro. My issues where some dark spots left from acne. And a minor acne problem. Since two of the three are for acne I wasn’t sure where I should be putting what. I know I should be calling the doc for this but she is so busy she told me to come in and that’s almost impossible for me this time of year. Any suggestions?
Theresa
AskDocWeb: Sorry Theresa, there is just no substitute for an in-person, hands-on demonstration of how much to use and where to put each one.
Subj: I’m glad I stuck with it
Date: 5/18/2009
I’ve been using Retin-A for 1.5 years now. I was 44 when I started, and began using it for moderate acne. I’m glad I stuck with it, because it took 7 months for my skin to get used to the product. After that, I began to experience more severe acne with at least 2 new lesions appearing every day! I used it in combination with 4% hydroquinone, a skin lightern, because the lesions would cause dark scars. I finally returned to my dermatologist, who prescribed aczone dapsone, and told me to use benzoil peroxide 5% in the morning, aczone 2x a day. In the past two months since getting the dapsone, I have hardly gotten any pimples. My skin looks amazing, with hardly any wrinkles, and nearly no pimples. I wash in the morning and evening with Aveeno Clear Complexion foaming wash with salycylic acid, just a dab on a washcloth, then a clear water rinse. Mornings I then apply the hydroquinone to any dark spots, then the benzoil peroxide 5%, then Aveeno 30 sunblock moisurizer. Then Revlon Color Stay for oily combo complexions. At night after the Aveeno wash, I apply the hydro again, then the aczone dapsone, then Retin-a Micro gel. This routine keeps my face looking great, and no peeling or dryness, even with the Benzoil Peroxide!

Subj: I highly recommend using this product
Date: 5/19/2009
I have only been using this product for a couple of days and I have already seen improvements. Although I have gotten a few of the side effects. It did cause me to get very red, well, more of a pink. My skin is very tender and burns often. But after I read the above section, I feel more reassured. Due to the severity of my side effects, I am going to start applying less. I also have been using it with other products. I use with it clinique mild face cleanser and Avon acne spot treatment. This doesn’t seem to interfere with the retin a at all. I highly recommend using this product.

Subj: Scarred for life?
Date: 5/20/2009
I used retin-A-micro in late February every night for about 3 weeks while using aczone in the morning as prescribed by my doctor. As a result my face was drying out…itching and turning darker in my forehead and cheek area. So my doctor told me to discontinue the use of retin-a-micro because now I’m suffering from uneven pigmentation where my face is darker in some spots. I don’t even take any pictures anymore because I hate the way my face looks. Please keep in mind that I am a brown skin african-american. Is there anything I can put on it to make it go away or am I scarred for life?
Disaya
AskDocWeb: Uneven pigmentation does not have to be permanent. If it bothers you that much then it might be worth your while to consult with a dermatologist about getting a chemical peel. Of course you would want to give your face a few weeks to recover first. At the most there would be a couple of weeks of recovery time but it could be worth it.
Subj: Burning sensation?
Date: 5/22/2009
I’ve been using Retin-A for about half a month now and I’m getting increasingly worried about the side effects, I apply as directed and when I wake up in the morning my acne isn’t looking that bad, then after I have a shower suddenly my face begins to go dry again but doesn’t peel. Also when applying is it common to get a burning sensation? I had a rather nasty allergic reaction when I took Differin, is this likely to have happened again?
The Operator
AskDocWeb: If you have been using Retin-A for more than three weeks and you still have the burning sensation, you may have to decrease it’s use by every other day or every third day for awhile to allow your skin more time to get adjusted to it.
Subj: Dark spots in face
Date: 5/24/2009
Hi, I started using Retin a 10 days ago, I use it every 2 days. Now I look older, my skin is very dry, my eyes look like an old lady and I haven’t peeled yet. I am using it because I have dark spots in all my face, I have a wedding in 3 weeks, I want to know if I am going to be better by then or should I stop using it now so I am not worse that day. What can I expect the next 3 weeks? Thank you very much!
Erika
AskDocWeb: If you want a prediction of your future results, you will have to consult with a dermatologist who can evaluate your skin type, health, and condition. The focus of this website is on side effects.
Subj: I could help
Date: 5/28/2009
I stumbled across this website, and read alot of the posts. If I could show you products that will give you the same results, yet give you healthy skin, would you be interested? Retin A will give you visible results, but it does nothing for the longevity of healthy skin. As far as rosacea, dark spots or discoloration, I could help there too.
Gary
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you want to sell something. If that is true, you are in the wrong place.
Subj: Acne and psoriasis
Date: 5/31/2009
I have mild/moderate psoriasis and mild acne usually occasional breakouts due to stress and medium size pores with black heads…my dermatologist recommended me to use retin a micro to help with my acne (which I think isn’t that bad) but she says it would help with my psoriasis too…is this true? or could it make my psoriasis worsen?
Bella
AskDocWeb: Although psoriasis us not mentioned in the patient information for Retin-A, clearing up your acne could still benefit overall situation. We would start out very slowly with minimal amounts to find out how the skin is going to react and to give the skin plenty of time to get used to the Retin-A.
Subj: Retin-A 0.01%
Date: 6/2/2009
Hello all, I’m 17 and I’m using “Retin-A 0.01%” now is that the weakest? I got it from the dermatologist.
Shadow
AskDocWeb: Yes, the 0.01% is the lowest strength available.
Subj: Not much improvement
Date: 6/4/2009
I have been using Retin-A for 12 weeks,(maybe more). I haven’t seen much improvement. If I saw any over the past few months, it was only for a short period and then new blemishes would appear. Now my forehead, which was initially the biggest problem has a new batch of blemishes, and I am getting blemishes on my jaw bone as well, which I hadn’t previously had. I’m wondering why the product is not working after 12 weeks and where I should go from here with it. Should I continue usage and expect improvement still?
Jamie
AskDocWeb: It is not clear what strength of Retin-A you are using but you may want to ask your dermatologist if using a higher strength dosage would be appropriate.
Subj: Black spots
Date: 6/4/2009
I used a lotion that contains hydroquinone while pregnant and I developed black spots (raised) on my face and neck kinda like those on Morgan Freeman’s face but smaller. I have since stopped and the spots have not reduced, but I’ve grown at least 2 shades darker on my face and body. What can I do? I’m African.
Stella
AskDocWeb: Your best choice may be with a dermatologist. They can come up with a customized treatment specifically designed for your skin.
Subj: No side effects
Date: 6/5/2009
I have been on Retin A for a week, but have seen no side effects. Does this mean it isn’t working?
Elizabeth
AskDocWeb: While that is possible it is not necessarily so, you may just be one of the lucky ones.
