Subj: Stretch marks?
Date: 7/8/2009
My dermatologist perscibed me Retin-A micro about 5 days ago. I only have been using it for 5 days only. He perscribed it for my stretch marks on my stomach. If you say that retin-a micro isn’t good for stretch marks, why did my dermatologist perscribe it to me?

Kris

AskDocWeb: We didn’t say that retin-a micro wasn’t good for any particular use. We said that using it for stretch marks would be an off-label use, meaning a use for which the manufacturer does not approve. If it works well for your stretch marks, we are happy for you. Just be aware that if you use a product in a way that is not approved of by the manufacturer, the manufacturer is not responsible for any damages that might result.

Subj: Tanda light therapy
Date: 7/9/2009
Hi, I just recently started on the Obagi Nu derm line and Retin A..I was wondering if I could also use my Tanda light therapy Red/blue along with the treatments? Please let me know I couldn’t find any info otherwise.

Tawnya

AskDocWeb: Sorry Tawnya, we have no data on the Tanda light.

Subj: Freckles?
Date: 7/14/2009
I want to know if Retin A can help me to get rid of freckles on my face?

Sam

AskDocWeb: A few people have mentioned using Retin-A on their freckles but so far there are no success stories here. Let us know if it works for your freckles.

Subj: Retin a is a winner for me
Date: 7/14/2009
Hi I just started using retin a. 1% was too high to start with, Maybe because two weeks prior I had started photo facial and was on the mend from that. I backed off to .25 for one week and then will start with .5 hoping to get back to the 1%. I picked it up from out of the country so, I have not yet been instructed on how to use it, only researched online. So far, I am very impressed with it, my skin is clear and younger healthier looking. Probably the combination of photo facial and retin a is a winner for me.

Subj: Yellow substance
Date: 7/16/2009
Hi were I have used retin a the each idividual paw flakes out some yellow substance it isn’t puss but I would like to know how I can stop it.

Ben

AskDocWeb: In order to determine how to stop it, you have to know what is causing it and that is a job for your local doctor.

Subj: Melasma
Date: 7/16/2009
I started using retin a for melasma but after 5 months of flaking and soreness my dr. switched me to triluma which I understand shouldn’t be used for long periods of time. Can I switch back to Retin a for maintenance after the triluma treatment?

Nicole

AskDocWeb: After 5 months of flaking and soreness with Retin-A are you sure you want to switch back? You might ask your Dr if you would do better with a lower dosage Retin-A gel. Tri-Luma Cream may improve your melasma, but it is NOT a cure. If the underlying cause of melasma is not removed, the melasma will return after treatment.

Melasma is a non-cancerous or benign disorder that causes dark (hyperpigmented) patches, primarily on the face. The cause of melasma is unknown. These brown patches often worsen in response to increases of the hormone estrogen, such as during pregnancy, the use of birth control pills, anti-seizure medications, and increased exposure to sunlight.

Subj: Gel version of Retin A?
Date: 7/17/2009
I started using retin a on May 12, 09 to treat my mild acne. Its now July 17, 09. My dermatologist started me on the crean version, strength 0.05% it worked great but after two months I started to breakout mildly again I was recently switched to the gel version, strength 0.01% a couple days ago. My question is this. After two months should I still be breaking out? Was it a good choice to switch to the gel version of retin a?

Jacob

AskDocWeb: Typically the skin becomes accustomed to Retin-A by week 6 or 7 and breakouts are greatly reduced by then. Switching to the gel sounds like a good idea but only time will tell for sure.

Subj: Too close to my eyes
Date: 7/17/2009
I just started using Retin A 1%. I used the product too close to my eyes and now they are puffy, dry and very wrinkle. I would like to know if there is anything I can do to diminish the puffiness and wrinkles before tonight. I am too embarrassed to go anywhere and have a date. What should I do?

Karen

AskDocWeb: To improve the appearance of skin around the eyes you might try hypoallergenic makeup. It is not likely to just go away in a few hours.

Subj: In the sun frequently
Date: 7/17/2009
Can I use Retin A along with good sunblock and still be permitted to be in the sun for 2 hours every day? Are the benefits from Retin A diminished by using sunblock? I dislike hats, so that is not an option. In summary, if I regularly apply a good sunblock, can I be in the sun frequently and reap the wrinkle reducing benefits of Retin A?

Don

AskDocWeb: In general, no, you can’t reap the benefits of Retin-A and be in the sun frequently without burning. Using sunblock does not diminish the benefits of Retin-A. Of course the higher the UV protection number the longer you will be able to stay out in the sun without ill effects. The degree of photosensitivity that Retin-A produces in the skin varies from one person to the next so it may take some experimenting to find out how much sun your skin will take without burning.

Subj: Applied Retin A to my chest
Date: 7/18/2009
I started using Retin A about 3 weeks ago. At first I really started to notice a change in the reduction of acne on my face. I have a scar on my chest from a really bad zit a couple months ago and I hoped that the Retin A would clear it up. Unfortunately, it has not. then about 2 weeks ago I suddenly got 4 small acne bumps in my cleavage area. I usually breakout right before my period so I thought that’s what was causing them. I applied the Retin A to my chest once at night. I thought that it was beginning to clear up because the acne dried up and the cream caused it to start peeling as if it were producing new skin underneath. The next day, my skin would peel off in a very thin layer, but in the last few days, the 4 areas where the acne bumps were are now the size of a pencil eraser. They have been burning a little for the past couple of nights so I stopped applying the cream. The skin now looks horrible as if I have some disease. I purchased my Retin A online so I do not have a doctor to talk to about this. Will these spots clear up if I continue to use this cream?

Natalie

AskDocWeb: Retin-A is prescribed to treat acne on facial skin. We can not recommend it for use on any other area.

Subj: Best advise from a dermatologist
Date: 7/19/2009
The best advise I ever got from a dermatologist regarding redness, dryness, and irritation when using Retin-A: start with a lower % and build up to a higher % and only use it ever other night. Works like a charm! I’ve had great results on my hands and my face and no more redness, peeling, dryness, or irritation. Use it every other night!

Subj: Retin-A off and on for 40 years
Date: 7/19/2009
I have used Retin-A (.05%) from Mexico off and on for 40 years. I am 71. Most people believe I am around 50. I blend it with a moisturizer and put it on sparingly at night. I do put it around the outer part of my eye (crow’s feet) but not on the eye lid. I think you should be careful using near your eyes or they could become infected (this did happen to me once). Also guard against sunburn. I use the retin-A at night with moisturizer and wash my face every morning and then apply a sunblock and moisturizer. I always wear sunglasses and a hat in the summer. I have found that if you use too much your skin will become irritated, even get a rash, but if you are cautious and spare in your use on a regular basis, it helps. I have very few wrinkles. I also use it on the backs of my hands and sometimes on my arms. Also I do think you do not always have as much quality control from Mexico and be aware of it. Oh, also, I am red-haired with sensitive skin that sun burns very easily.

Subj: Face becoming rose in colour
Date: 7/22/2009
I am very black my doctor advice me to use penquine and retino A alternatively in the n8 time to become fair but my face becoming rose in colour what can I do?

Navin

AskDocWeb: The safest thing to do is to return to your doctor so that your treatment can be adjusted.

Subj: Facial hair?
Date: 7/22/2009
I have a question, not a comment. I just went to the doctors today for my annual woman check up. and I have been dealing with PCOS for a few years now. And from PCOS I have one of the effects of facial hair. My doctor gave me retin-a to help soften the hair. I just have been reading a lot on retin-a, and I have not found one thing that relates to facial hair treatment. So my question is, does retin-a help with reducing the appearance of facial hair?

Sarah

AskDocWeb: We have seen no indication that Retin-A has any affect on the appearance of facial hair.

Subj: Depression or anxiety?
Date: 7/22/2009
Is there ANY chance Retin-a can cause depression or anxiety? Every time I go on it, I notice an increase in iritable moods…any correlation?

Marci

AskDocWeb: Those are not listed as side effects by the manufacturer but there are a few reports from others who have the same problems.

Subj: 35 with oily skin, great results
Date: 7/25/2009
I’ve been using the generic .05% Retin-A for about 6 weeks now. It only cost me ten dollars for the prescription, and my results have been great…fewer blemishes, much smoother skin and a nice glow. I did have an initial weird flaky patch on one eyelid for about 2 weeks, and had initial scabby peeling on my chin and nose, but this is clearing up nicely. I am 35, with strong, oily skin, and the application techniques I’ve noted that really help are to use my acne face wash with salicylic acid ONLY in the morning, and at night I use a very gentle face wash (Fresh’s Soy Face wash is very good…or Cetaphil). I always wait 20 minutes after washing before using my Retin-A. While it is tempting to use a lot, remember you only need A PEA SIZED DROP for your whole face! I use it all over my face including under my eyes. I only use a moisturizer in the morning, with my sunscreen and makeup. I’m used to using scrubs to exfoliate my face, and on Retin-A I have to be SUPER gentle. Last week I scrubbed my face with a washcloth and I literally took a patch of skin off my forehead. Hope this entry will help some people. I love Retin-A!
