Subj: Side effects?
Date: 11/20/2009
My daughter uses retin-A. Today she was given a shot (steroid) for a very bad case of poison. Could she have side effects and if so, what type? Thank you, your feedback is much appreciated.

Patti

AskDocWeb: Side effects are always possible when using prescription medications. The side effects of Retin-A are listed here. There are a lot of side effects from steroid use. Here is a partial list of potential side effects.

  • acne
  • adrenal suppression and crisis
  • black and blue marks
  • cataracts
  • deposits of fat in chest, face, upper back, and stomach
  • diabetes
  • high blood pressure
  • increased appetite and weight gain
  • increased susceptibility to infection
  • increased sweating
  • mood swings
  • muscle weakness
  • osteoporosis
  • psychological problems such as depression
  • slowed healing of wounds
  • stomach ulcers
  • thinning of the skin
  • water and salt retention leading to swelling

Steroids are powerful drugs, which can improve symptoms and provide incredible results but there are potential consequences. The power of steroids should not be feared but it must be respected.

Subj: Under arms?
Date: 11/22/2009
I have been a Retin-A user for years and more than pleased with the results. However, I am now at the age that the unsightly crinkly skin is beginning to show up on the underarms. Whey is Retin-A not affective in this area?

Salli

AskDocWeb: Sorry Salli, Retin-A has not been approved for use on the underarms, only on the face.

Subj: Daughter has acne
Date: 11/21/2009
I’ve been reading your comments and really would like your advice. My daughter has been in the care of a nurse practitioner for her acne. So far, from all that I’ve read, this lady seems to be doing a good job, but progress has been minimal. She has her on a morning routine of cleanse, moisturize and .1% Retin-A; and an evening routine of cleanse, moisturize and Aczone. I just ordered a cleansing program with a cleanser, toner w? 2% salicylic acid in it, and Benzoyl Peroxide. I know she can’t use the BP with the Retin-A or Aczone, but I thought she could do cleanse, toner with salicylic a, and then the Retin-A and same routine in the evening with the Aczone. Is this too wrong? Also, I’m not sure my daughter is waiting 30 minutes to apply either the Retin-A or Aczone. Maybe this is one reason she isn’t seeing results. I appreciate any advice. Oh, also she’s on Solodyn. Doesn’t seem to be helping much.

Subj: My acne is WAY worse
Date: 11/22/2009
Hi! I have been on this product (retin a Gel .025) for almost a month now (I am in the fourth week) and my acne is WAY worse than ever. My entire face looks swollen and sick and I have a million inflamed pustules on my face. Does this mean I should stop using it or will it improve?

Kat

AskDocWeb: It seems that the most common mistake in using Retin-A is applying too much. You may want to read the instructions again to make sure you avoid that. A return visit to the dermatologist may also be in order to evaluate your progress, or lack of progress.

Subj: Aloe vera gel helps with dryness
Date: 11/24/2009
I have been using retin A for just a couple days now. I put the slightest dab on the bad areas of my face, b/c of how strong it is, and I’ve noticed my face is a little dry and peeling in certain areas. My skin is so sensitive that I only use it every other day and apply 100% aloe vera gel on top of it as a moisturizer. This helps w/the dryness. I feel after a few more weeks of this process, it will peel away my hyperpigmentation spots and dry out my acne completely. I am hopeful.

Kris

AskDocWeb: If readers are considering using Aloe Vera, be sure to check the side effects and cautions.

Subj: Jan Marini with Retin-A?
Date: 11/26/2009
I’ve been using Jan Marini products (C-Esta, Bioglycolic Acid, and Age intervention) religiously every day for several years. I recently went to Mexico and purchased some .1% Retin-A. I don’t have acne but was thinking about using it to see if I can yield any further improvement in reducing the appearance of fine lines. My question is whether I can continue to use my Jan Marini routine during the day if I’m using the Retin-A at night or if anyone sees any potential issues.

Debbie

Subj: I really like the results
Date: 11/29/2009
I’m been using .1% cream since July. At first I diluted it alot with moisturizer and now I am doing that less because I am tolerant. I notice regular peeling on my face, a little burning but not much of a bother. I really like the results. I feel like I have to wear a lot less makeup because my skin tone is more even. My skin is very exfoliated with very few black heads etc. It has helped a little with fine lines but I still have a few deeper lines above my lip and crows feet. I’m 43 so they are not too bad but I would like them gone. Over time, will this help with them or if there nothing I can do about it. Luckily, I have few lines under my eyes and the retin a has helped with the crows feet a little. I don’t put it past my orbital bone. Thanks,

Kristie in northern California

AskDocWeb: It may help some but deeper lines may require something more invasive like plastic surgery.

Subj: Red burning peeling
Date: 11/29/2009
I have been using tretinoin cream for acne on my bottom for awhile now but have a red burning peeling place now in the crack of my bottom what can I do to heal this?

Julie

AskDocWeb: The red burning peeling area is likely caused by irritation from the Retin-A. Retin-A is only approved for use on the face.

Subj: Cosmedix Refine4% cream
Date: 12/3/2009
Hi there I am using cosmedix Refine4% cream, how long can I use it. Have been using it for about 10 months and my skin is much finer and clearer. I am over 70 but skin is better than it was 10 years ago, however is it a safe cream to use? Thanks,

Liz

AskDocWeb: Since you are asking about the safety issue after 10 months of use we can only assume that you are wondering about long-term effects. It appears that Cosmedix LLC (the manufacturer) has been doing business for about seven now and so far there are no reports of any long-term effects.

Subj: Pleased with Retin A gel
Date: 12/8/2009
I have been using Retin A gel for a few years on my face (I’m 59) and my skin is very smooth and am pleased with this product. I also use Atralin and it works good. Can I apply the Atralin to the “crows feet” area on sides of eyes?

Donna

AskDocWeb: Sorry Donna, that is a question for Atralin customer service. We aren’t familiar with that product.

Subj: Home peels?
Date: 12/14/2009
Can I use at home peels (glycolic & Lactic) while using Retin-A? My skin is normal and the retin-A makes it extremely dry and flaky. I thought I would benefit from lactic peels since it pulls moisture to the skins surface. Also it would help desolve the dry skin cased by the Retin-a.

Ebony

AskDocWeb: Retin-A also exfoliates your skin and many have found that the combination is too much, although some get away with doing a light peel every 2-3 months. Over exfoliating can cause some serious irritation. Remember that the use of a moisturizer is recommended while using Retin-A. One of those fuzzy shower scrubbers can also help.

Subj: Buy Retin A cream
Date: 12/15/2009
Where can I buy Retin A cream for? I do not have health insurance.

Alexandra

AskDocWeb: Retin-A is a prescription drug and is only available from a pharmacy.

Subj: Brown mark
Date: 12/15/2009
I am using retin a 0.025 is that strong enough for my fine lines and wrincles? And I have a brown mark above my mouth, hope it isn’t precanccer if it is will retin a help, and how long till I see results? I’ve been using it for about three weeks.

Sheila

AskDocWeb: The strength of product you use should be decided by your dermatologist after evaluating your skin type and sensitivity. They will also be able to tell you if your brown mark is pre-cancerous or not. According to the patient information, more than 6 or 7 weeks of treatment may be needed before consistent beneficial effects appear.

Subj: Discoloration on lip
Date: 12/16/2009
I have a pretty depressing discoloration on my upper lip right on the vermilion border! And I’ve seen 3 dermatologists all wit similar but different creams. I have retin a micro .04 and stievemycin .025. and the last doc gave me a compounded bleaching cream that has hydroquinone and also .025 tretion! I wanna know if I can use the .04 retin night then apply the bleach in the day?…ive read quite reports wit combining the two wit no harm! I really dont mind the redness cause it actually HIDES the discoloration on my lip! if it wasnt on the border makeup would be my bes friend, but man this is killing my confidence big time so I’m really looking for speed more than anything.

Ray

AskDocWeb: Since you are on your third dermatologist, it sounds like your condition may not be responding to the usual treatments. In order to be safe, you should check with the doctor before trying to use both medications.

Subj: It’s been 4 months
Date: 12/17/2009
I was put on retin-a cream about 4 months ago to clear up my acne (small amount). It got worse immediately, which I suspected because my dr. warned me of it, but it’s been 4 months and it’s only gotten worse than it’s ever been before. Should I consider trying something else now? I feel like I’ve waited long enough to see if it works. Help.

Silja

AskDocWeb: Most people see improvement within a month or two so consider checking back with your doctor. When applying creams, it is easy to use too much so you may also want to review the instructions.

Subj: Dark spots
Date: 12/18/2009
I am 19yr old using retinol 0.05% fr 3months but I seemed acne is worst n once acne fedsaway it leaves behind darkspots…

Ashish

Subj: Not seeing any results
Date: 12/21/2009
I’ve been using Retin-A Micro 0.1% for about 3 weeks. I wash my face twice a day with Neutrogena’s Deep Clean cream cleanser, I use the Neutrogena Alcohol-Free toner and SPF 15 oil-free moisturizer. My doctor said this regimen was fine but I’m not seeing any results. She told me once my skin regulates, to use Retin-A twice a day. But in the meantime, shouldn’t I see some kind of result besides my skin peeling like crazy and stinging? I just see the blocked comedones all over.

Anna

AskDocWeb: The peeling and stinging are signs that it is working. When these symptoms subside, that will be a sign that your skin has become adjusted to the dosage that you are using.
